About Trey Whitfield
Trey Whitfield was born and raised in Brooklyn,
New York. He was a recipient of a full scholarship to
Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire
in 1986. At Brewster he was very active in the theatre and
was a member of the baseball and basketball teams. In his
junior year at Brewster, Trey led his basketball team to the
New England State Championship.
Trey was a 6’8” 240 pound power forward and was rated
one of the top players in the country. He was highly
recruited by schools such as Pepperdine, Boston College,
University of Massachusetts, University of Richmond
and Purdue. He finally chose the University of Richmond
because of its strong academic philosophy, solid coaching
and the encouragement of one of its distinguished alumni,
Johnny Newman.
Trey spent many hours giving back to his community. He
always considered himself fortunate so he encouraged
youngsters to take advantage of any opportunity to
further their education. He worked in summer camps
counseling young boys and girls. He also played in Summer Leagues in the New York area and
participated in the Metro Basketball Camp in Pennsylvania each summer.
A boating accident, just a few days prior to graduation, took his young life. However, family,
hundreds of dear friends, fans and classmates still embrace him in memory because of his total
commitment to scholarship, friendship and competition.
Many of Trey’s colleagues continue their quest for higher education as a salute to him. Trey
touched many lives in his short 18 years and he still lives in the hearts of the many adults and
youngsters who knew and loved him.
In his memory, the Trey Whitfield Foundation will pursue his dream that everyone regardless
of ethnic background gets a fair chance at being educated. That every child will have a helping
hand and every youngster will get support from someone who cares.
Trey, your dream continues...
