Bayer Thaiûs outstanding energy-saving performance at its Map Ta Phut site received a Thailand Energy
Award in 2007 from the Ministry of Energyûs Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency.
Beginning in 2002, the site initiated various energy-saving projects, reaching a total of 66 innovative
projects by end 2009. The completion of 60 of these projects enabled the site to save 6.0 MW of electricity
and 19 tons of steam per hour.
Such achievements have strengthened our role as a responsible and socially-committed company with an
energy- and resource-management system capable of achieving peak efficiency and maximum benefits.
Energy conservation and the reduction of Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) emissions is an essential element for
sustainable business operation. The Board of Management of Bayer AG has therefore initiated the çBayer
Climate Checké. By mid-2010, around 140 production facilities and buildings will have been
put under the microscope incl. our Map Ta Phut site. Based on calculations for 126 plants, Bayer believes
there is realistic potential for reducing both energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by
approximately 10 percent through 2013.
Energy efficiency is also at the center of the new measurement and management method STRUCTese ˙
(Structured Efficiency System for Energy), which has been developed by Bayer MaterialScience in
collaboration with Bayer Technology Services and Bayer Business Services.
At the Map Ta Phut site, in 2006 we switched from burning heavy fuel oil to natural gas to generate
steam. This resulted in a reduction of fuel-oil consumption amounting to about 3,000 tons per year and
reduction of associated emissions of Sulphur Oxides (SO X) and NO X. Overall CO 2 emissions tumbled
by approximately 60,000 tons per year up to year 2009 and this figure is expected to be 70,000 tons
per year by end of 2010, a 25% reduction since 2002.
