Social Work Students in Action<br />

With a focus on mass incarceration and the War on Drugs, Salisbury<br />

University Department of Social Work BASW and MSW students<br />

and faculty visited Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA, the<br />

first prison built in the U.S. The adventures continued with an engaging<br />

poverty tour of the Kensington neighborhood by the Poor People’s<br />

Economic Human Rights Campaign, where students learned firsthand<br />

about the devastating effect of the War on Drugs and the loss of<br />

University of Portland Social Work Students stand up for racial,<br />

economic, and gender justice at the Oregon Health Equity Alliance<br />

(OHEA)/Fair Shot for All Coalition launch of their 2017 legislative<br />

agenda, which includes bills to fund health insurance for all<br />

Oregon’s children, end racial profiling by Oregon law enforcement,<br />

and address issues for renters that will increase housing stability<br />

and prevent homelessness. <strong>In</strong> addition to supporting the broader<br />

goals of these coalitions, UP students are involved in policy research<br />

and advocacy to secure paid family and medical leave as part of the<br />

CSWE/Policy Practice in Field Education <strong>In</strong>itiative sponsored by<br />

Tianca Crocker, a doctoral student at the University of Texas at Austin<br />

whose research focuses on digital inclusion for economic opportunity, is<br />

serving as a NTEN/Google Fiber Digital <strong>In</strong>clusion Fellow to supplement<br />

her research with practice. <strong>In</strong> this photo, she is shown teaching a<br />

group of AARP clients at her host organization, Austin Free-Net, about<br />

computers and the <strong>In</strong>ternet to help them use these newly-acquired skills<br />

to transition in the workforce.<br />

Ramapo College students staffed a table for World<br />

AIDS Day, December 1, 2016. They sold t-shirts and<br />

contributed to the NJ AIDS Services. The students<br />

were raising awareness of AIDS/HIV on the Ramapo<br />

campus in Mahwah, NJ.<br />
