Cuprosolvency
Cuprosolvency is typified by general
corrosion of copper pipe releasing slightly
elevated levels of colourless soluble
copper into the drinking water.
There is no noticeable change in the
colour or clarity of the water and whilst the
integrity of the copper pipe is unaffected,
staining of sanitary ware (Figure 6.3) and
clothing can occur.
It is typically associated with dripping water
taps or a particular soap that reacts with
the low levels of copper and can readily be
removed using ammonia-based cleaning
agent.
It’s Occurrence
Information gathered about this
phenomenon indicate that it has been
associated with untreated cold water
typically in rain water tanks systems and is
associated with:
• Water, which have no residual chlorine or
disinfection system.
• Soft waters with low pH
