DT
State Minister of Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam addressing at the Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on the situation of the Rohingya Muslim Minority in Myanmar yesterdsay
PID
• Tribune Desk
Bangladesh has demanded urgent
measures from Myanmar to
take back the Rohingyas who took
shelter in the country fleeing their
homes in Rakhine state following
military crackdown.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs
Shahriar Alam placed the demand
yesterday in a meeting of
the council of foreign ministers
under the Organisation of Islamic
Cooperation (OIC) on the situation
of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar,
which was held in Malaysia.
Shahriar urged Myanmar to take
urgent measure for a sustainable
repatriation of the Rohingyas,
both documented and undocumented,
who are temporarily sheltered
in Bangladesh and beyond,
said a press release of the foreign
ministry.
He also urged the Myanmar authorities
to ensure safety, security
and livelihood among other basic
rights to the minority group, it
said, adding, Shahriar insisted on
a durable solution to the ongoing
unrest in Rakhine state.
Expressing his concern over the
ongoing crisis in Rakhine state, the
junior minister alleged that the
Rohingya Muslims are being displaced
and uprooted from their ancestral
homeland and compelled to
take shelter in Bangladesh.
Referring to recent influx of
the minority Rohingyas into
Bangladesh, he demanded that
Myanmar restore normalcy into
the Rakhine state immediately and
take steps for reconstruction of the
homes belonging to the Rohingya
refugees.
He also emphasised on restoring
citizenship of the Rohingya people
Probe report about assault on
N’ganj school teacher submitted
• Ashif Islam Shaon
The Judicial probe report on the
public assault and humiliation
of Narayanganj school teacher
Shyamal Kanti Bhakta has been
submitted to the High Court on
Thursday.
The probe report will be placed
before the High Court bench of
Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury
and Justice JBM Hassan for
hearing on Sunday, Deputy Attorney
General Motahar Hossain
Saju said while talking to the reporters.
He said that Dhaka Chief Metropolitan
Magistrate Sheikh Hafizur
Rahman brought the report to
the High Court to place it before
the court. But as the Supreme
Court’s proceedings were halted
from 11am remembering the
death of ex-Chief Justice MM Ruhul
Amin, he submitted it to the
High Court’s office concern.
The 65-page report was submitted
as an affidavit. It was prepared
after analyzing the statements
of witnesses, victims and
the available video and audio recordings.
The report also included
some recommendations to make
sure that such an incident never
reoccurs, Saju added.
Shyamal, headmaster of Piyar
Sattar Latif High School in
Narayanganj, was beaten up by
a mob on May 13 that year in
the school premises for allegedly
making derogatory remarks
against Islam.
He was also forced to do squats
holding his ears, as punishment
for his“crime”in the presence of
local Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM
Salim Osman, a video footage of
which went viral on social media
triggering countrywide outrage.
Salim, however, claimed that
what he did was to save the headmaster
from the mob.
The High Court had dismissed
a report on the incident submitted
by police on August last year,
terming it as “incomplete” and
“inconclusive”. •
through necessary review of the
existing exclusionary citizenship
law in Myanmar, the press note
added.
He further urged the OIC to continue
working for a durable solution
to the problem, according to
the press release.
Earlier, Malaysian Prime Minister
Najib Razak inaugurated the extraordinary
session, as it is called,
of the OIC council.
He said the international community
cannot remain silent at the
continued suffering of the Rohingyas,
forcefully demanding an end
to the denial of basic rights of the
minority people, and atrocities and
violence inflicted on them.
A report on the plight of the Rohingya
Muslims due to state-sponsored
violence was placed in the
session when the OIC member
countries too expressed concern
over the situation with most of
those calling for strong actions
through the intervention of UN and
Human Rights Council.
However, the member states
appreciated Bangladesh’s role in
hosting hundreds of thousands Rohingyas
for decades. •
Annisul: Burnt shops to be
shifted temporarily
• Arifur Rahman Rabbi
Dhaka North City Corporation
(DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq yesterday
said the shops that were
damaged in the DNCC Market fire
would temporarily be relocated
within the market premises, during
the completion of the cleanup
work of the rubbles.
The mayor said a decision
would be taken after talks with
stakeholders.
A massive fire ravaged the
DNCC Market in Gulshan on
January 3, causing parts of the
structure to collapse and massive
damage to goods in the market.
Out of the 291 shops, 88 of
them have already been opened.
The cause of the fire is still unclear,
although traders suspected
the blaze to be an act of sabotage.
It took 13 days for the army
and DNCC to clear the debris.
A BUET team had examined
the DNCC Pucca Market, parts of
which were damaged in the January
3 fire, they fitted steel props
on the damage parts on the east
side of the Pucca market.
The mayor said they were
waiting for the BUET report before
making further moves.
The Mayor also said two
probe committees have been
formed to investigate the fire
adding: “Once we get the final report
we can begin to work on the
recommendations.” •
