A Guide to rural England.

The fourth area of the exploration project will seek to focus on the rural inhabitant, this area will gain insights into daily lives of rural inhabitants using one form or another of transport from 3 different age group perspectives. This will consist of hard data, surveys and interviews, shadowing to observe rituals and habits and also 3x user journeys from which insights can be generated and potential opportunities.

Wherever possible, the Rural-Urban Classification is used <strong>to</strong> distinguish <strong>rural</strong><br />

and urban areas. The Classification defines areas as <strong>rural</strong> if they fall outside<br />

of settlements with more than 10,000 resident population. Census Output<br />

Areas - the smallest areas for which data are available from the 2001 and 2011<br />

Censuses - are assigned <strong>to</strong> one of four urban or six <strong>rural</strong> categories. Those<br />

described as “in a sparse setting” reflect where the wider area is remotely<br />

populated.
