THE RECEIVING
END
Harry Everts : The Man.
Before Harry Everts v/on his world champf.onahf.p title in 197~ he was relatively
unknovm outside Belgium. When his trip to South Africa was announced, amongst
the lesser-informed or newer groups to become interested in Motocross it wa3 a
case of "Harry Everts, who's he?" Even in the United States, (seemingly the
most informed of the mota-cross countries outside of Europe), there raged a
conflict to whether he was Everts or Everst, all due to tailors mistake on
Harry's leathers. Could such a conflict happen to Gaston Rahier or Roger De
Coster? It's unlikely. They are too well known.
Even after his wins at Syringa and Killarny little was known about him. Here
are some facts:-
Harry is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has a wife, Francine,
and both come from the Flemish section of Belgium, as do Roger De Coster,
Sylvain Geboers, Jaak van Velthoven and Gilbert De Roover. Harry also has a
son who is now six and had learnt to ride a mini-bike from the age of three.
Motorcycle racing seems to be very much a part of the family. Harry's uncle,
Gef. Teuwissen was in the 60's European 500 cc Champion.
Harry was all ready an up and coming rider when in 1972 at the age of 18 he
travelled to America to ride a 125 cc for Puch. Although he did extremely well
(seven wins out of eight entries) it was not enjoyable as Harry could not speak
English; he had difficulty in ordering food and other necessities.
At the age of twenty-one, in 1975, Harry won his first World Championship,
again aboand a Puch, (pronounced Pook).
Puch had taken their racing not very seriously, and it was as Harry recalls,
"a hobby for Herr Puch ", As the team ran on a low budget Harry was told to
nurse the bike and thus they had a relatively trouble-free season.
Harry's Puch was a remarkable bike; a twin, carburetor wonder then put out an
incredible 53 horsepower.
Dear Editor
As this is the second time 1m writing to
you, I just like to say thanks for the
great mag. At last I have something to
look forward to each month. I think it's
time S.A.B.C. spent a little time and
attention to Motocross and find place
for Motocross on their programmes.
Lastly my Edition of Volume 1 No. 2
has disappeared, if you could let me
know where I'll get another one I'll
gladly pay for it and it will be very much
appreciated.
Keep up the good work, and oh yes! I've
converted about 20 of my friends to
your mag and, Motocross!
John Pirzenthal Meredale
Johannesburg
What a great letter John. We have sent
you a copy of Vol. 1 No. 2 with our
compliments.
Ed.
Harry looked forward to a repeat victory in '76 but it was not to be. The
Puch became unreliable in the '76 season and the best Harry could manage was a
fifth spot.
At the beginning of 1977 Harry switched to Bultaco when Jim Pomeroy left for
Honda.
Although Harry put in some stirring rides, his Bultaco was not up to the highly
works KTM's and Montessa's. He will be lucky if he can repeat his 1976 position
of 5th.
Harry however is only 24 this year and therefore he still has time to repeat
his '75 World Place.
In between the 1977 and 1978 seasons Harry visited South Africa. He found South
African tracks too flat and small. But despite that and the fact that he rode ~
stock Bultaco Harry trounced the opposition.
Harry at the moment is second to Roger De Coster in the Belgium National title
and ahead of Gaston Rahier so 1978 could well be an incredible year for him.
Dear Sirs
I am a very great Moto-X fan and go to
every meeting at Briekor as it is the
nearest track to my house. I get your
Mag every month and think it is great. I
would like to know if you could send me
as many posters as possible (mainly of
Tyrone Stevenson) as I have read and
heard that you give away posters. I have
looked high and low but can't find any
more posters. I have only two posters of
Tyrone Stevenson and I am looking for
many more as I have got big walls to fill.
Keep up the good work.
Yours sincerely
April Fools Day 1 9 78 saw Syringa
Motorcycle Park host the opening
round of the Transvaal Champs.
The weather was perfect for motocrossing
with 1 or 2 light rains
dampening the surface of the circuit
and the spectators got more than their
money's worth in the form of 18 exciting
races, a total of which 1 5 were
championship events.
Man ofthe day predictably 1 9 year old
hot-shoe Grant Maben who totally
dominated the 2 5 0 and 1 2 5 MX
events on his Castrol Hondas. In both
2 5 0 Motos he was out in front right at
the start and then it was just wheelie
time, all the way to the chequered flag.
He was hotly pursued throughout the
day by Geoff Gray, Grant's team mate
on an identical red rocket Honda and
Toby Venter on his Shell Suzuki. In the
second 2 5 0 moto Grant had to step up
his pace in fear of a superfast Tyrone
Stevenson on a works Kawasaki.
Tyrone chased Maben furiously and
their pace soon took them way ahead of
the following riders. What was proving
to be a gut tingIer was ruined when
Tyrone threw it away screaming up
towards the Widow Maker and was
Roy Gardner Riding Well. (Photo: Seymour Smith)
Speak to Tom Maben about your MX problems
in the NEWBiketique and Motocross section
which has just opened at, 197 Hendrik Verwoerd drive,
Randburg. 48·5131,48-1937
It's great to deal with the People
who Care
GWADS
sidelined much to the disappointment
of the anticipating spectators.
In the 1 25 event Maben's only competition
came in the form of Deon du
Plessis, also on a Castrol Honda, Greg
Wilson on his Shell Suzuki and Roy
Gardner on a Texas Suzuki. The first
heat was rather lackluster as the leaders
were well spaced out and they remained
in their original position for the duration
.of the race. Under a gathering sky
Maben took the win followed by a seemingly
effortlessly riding Deon du Plessis.
Greg Wilson and Roy Gardner took
3 rd and 4 th respectively.
Tony Riddell {Yamaha} who has proved
himself the man to beat in the Highschool
class had his lead toppled by
Kenny van der Merwe on a Honda. The
first was Riddell characteristicaly hold
first place until the end when he was
followed closely by van der Merwe and
then a more respectable distance,
Geoffrey Nelon his Texas Suzuki.
In the second moto Riddell was riding
strongly in 3 rd place when he came adrift.
This allówed Kenny van der Merwe
and Wayne Jones {Wolf Castrol Honda}
to take first and second unchallenged.
Wayne was unfortunately forced to the
back of the pack in the first moto therefore
excluding him from the results.
Rob Larney on his Draper Plant Hire
Suzuki put together a strong 4 th and
3 rd to give him 3 rd overall.
Top man in the lO 0 cc class was
Norman Miller. In the first moto he got
out ahead of Riddell (Yamaha) to eventually
take the win.
The second moto saw him end up
second behind a beautifully riding
Andy Carr {BPYamaha}.
Matthews another man to watch in this
class eventually took 3 rd ahead of N.
Riddell.
The big boy's race i.e. SO 0 cc class, was
deservedly won by Chris Brand on the
KS Husky. He held it together throughout
the day to supercede Butch Hirsch
(Bultaco) and Ray Patterson (Draper
yz D). These two were always in
Brands shadow but were unable to get
the edge on him.
SOO Enduro event winner was Chris
Davies (Yamaha). He was challenged
throughout the day by Alan Smith also
Yamaha and Dave Hill (Husky), but
managed to keep it together plenty
enough to secure his 1 st place.
The 2 SO Enduro event produced the
winner in the form of Strugnell who secured
a first time win. This put him in
line for the R2S award. Behind Strugnell
John Dowling (Honda Special), and
Darryl Phillips battled it out behind
with Dowling eventually taking second.
The Minicross class was taken by an
elated Donavan Kotze. He has tried to
the best of his ability for months and
has eventually been rewarded for his
concerted efforts. Charlie Bezuidenhout
was 2 nd and J. Dingle, a man (?) to
watch was third.
That wraps up the first round of the
Tv1.champs and judging by the quality
of the racing we can look forward to
what promises to be an exciting series.
A warm, breezy day saw the Leeukuil
circuit come back to life with the first
club meeting of the season. On the
banks of the Vaal river, where the sandy
conditions. remind one of tracks like
Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, the top
Transvaal riders turned up for final
race practice before going on to Killarney
for the second round of the
Nationals the following Saturday.
Apart from the Minicross and Junior
riders, competitors were split up into
categories rather than classes, so we saw
Novices, Intermediates and Experts
racing on machines of varying power,
with some very interesting results. Star
of the 12Scc Class. Grant Maben, was
mounted on a 2S0cc Honda. competing
against the likes of Tyrone Stevenson on
the 2S0cc Kawasaki, Peter Hill (2S0cc
Husqvarna), Toby Venter (2S0cc
Suzuki), Marthinus Briers (2S0cc
Yamaha), Chris Brand (SOOcc
Husqvarna) and Butch Hirsch (SOOcc
Bultaco) as well as a host of top riders
on 12Scc machines.
Maben hole-shotted the first heat ahead
of Stevenson, Venter and Hill, but as
the riders came around to complete the
first lap, it was apparent that Maben
must have taken a tumble somewhere
Once he got going, he rode like a demon
to take second place with Toby Venter
riding well into third. The final heat
was a great dice between Stevenson,
Maben and Hill with the 12Scc riders
du Plessis, Gary Keyser (Honda) and
Nicky Milosovich (Suzuki) all putting
up a good show against the bigger
machines.
Feature of the intermediate class was
the battle between Robert Isherwood
(2S0cc Yamaha) and Brian Attwell
(12Scc Kawasaki), who during the
course of the three heats swopped
positions constantly. Victor Kulikowski
(SOOcc KTM) lead the first heat for
most of the race, but came off on the
last lap to aIJow Isherwood and Attwell
through. Brian Bekker (Suzuki) rode
well in two of the intermediate heats.
but was excluded from the final results
as he had entered the Experts class and
had in fact, competed in the first
Experts heat.
Stars of the 1 25 cc High School class
were Wayne Jones (Honda), Kenny van
der Merwe (Honda) and Russell
Campbell (Suzuki) with Gary Goosen
and Dean Muter showing up well on
occasions. Kenny van der Merwe did
particularly well in coming second
overall after coming off in both the first
and third heats. The 1 00 cc Junior
event was won by Andrew Carr
(Yamaha) with Gary Beuthin (Suzuki)
second, followed by Grant McCleery
(Suzuki).
Novice class went to AIJan Phillips, who
certainly looked a lot better than a
"novice" on the track, while Dave
Hoffman and Kevin Rodgers fiIJed the
minor placings. In the Minicross John
Hardiman came to prominence and
rode very well to take first place from
Bezuidenhout and Campbell.
The 1 9 7 8 Motocross season moved
into top gear at Briekor on Sat. 25th
March with the opening round of the
Sportsman Lager sponsored S.A. Motocross
championships. The organising
club TMX, have quite obviously put a
tremendous amount of work and money
into improvements both on and off the
track, but unfortunately a lot of the
spectator facilities were still incomplete
on raceday, and proved inadequate with
the very large crowd that turned up, one
of the biggest seen at Brickor.
The racing itself was a very high
standard indeed with machines even
quicker than last year, and' the riders
more determined than ever to make the
grade. So many of the competitors have
changed machines, sponsors, numbers,
and even classes, that it is going to take
quite a few meetings before one will be
able to recognise most of the field without
the help of a program.
The first championship heat of the
meeting was the 500 MX class, and
what a treat it was to see a good sized
field with Chris Brand on the Team
Kolbenschmidt Husqvarna taking an
immediate lead in the first heat, closely
attended by Butch Hirsch (Off Road
Moto X SA VoI.2 No.5 Page 12

BuItaco), Ivor Keppler and 10b Painter
(Maico). As the race progressed Brand
held his lead with Painter in second
place, Hirsch third and Ray Patterson
(Draper Plant Hire yz D) moving into
fourth.
Cape Town's Bunny Shandler took a
heavy tumble coming over Jacks and
this put paid to his chances in the first
heat, and apparently for the rest of the
meeting, as he did not feature in the remaining
two heats. After his win in the
first heat, Chris Brand came in second
behind Barry Falconer (Team Terra-
Move Shimwells Yamaha) in the next
heat with Graham Green filling third
place. Obviously encouraged by his ride
in the second heat, Falconer took the
lead in the third heat with Tommy
Trefz (Ride High with Yamaha) immediately
behind him, but Trefz disappeared
temporarily from the scene, to
emerge later well down the field. Brand
Painter and Hirsch were prominent in
this heat with Graham Green closing
the gap all the time as leader Falconer
appeared to be tiring.
Green eventually overtook Falconer to
win, with Brand third, Painter fourth
and Hirsch fifth.
First heat of the 100 cc Juniors
provided an exciting dice between Neil
Riddell (Yamaha) and Gary Beuthin,
who has moved up this season from If you were leading the 125 Class by that far you'd also be laughing. Grant Maben.
Riddell managed to be in front when
they passed the chequered flag, followed
by Beuthin, Norman Miller, Patrick
O'Keeffe (B.P. with R.B.S. Yamaha)
and Geoffrey Larney (Draper Plant
Neil Riddell took the second heat comfortably
from Andy Carr (BP Yamaha)
with Miller again filling third position
and Beuthin fourth.
A feature of the start of the 1 2 5 cc
Juniors was the fact that the first four
riders came off the start-line in numerical
order, 1 ,2,3.4. Number 1 being
Wayne Jones (Wolf Honda Castro!), 2
being Kenny van der Merwe (Payless
Honda), 3 being Symm Grobler, and 4
being Tony Riddell (BP Yamaha).
Riddell changed the sequence when he
overtook Symm, who dropped his
machine in front of the control tower.
He then proceeded to challenge Wayne
Jones and moved into the lead by the Riddell (226) and Beuthin in close combat. (Photo: Seymour Smith)
fourth lap. At this stage of the moto
Wayne Angilley was showing up very
well.
Riddell eventually went through to win
from Wayne Jones and Kenny van der
Merwe.
Riddell was once again out in front in
the second moto, which he won by a
wide margin. Gary Goosen (Yamaha)
and Dean Muter (Super Steel
Kawasaki) rode well to fill second and
third places respectively, ahead of
Grobler, Jones and van der Merwe. A
multiple pile-up just before the entrance
into Triple Jump spoiled the
chances of a number of competitors
including Nils Forssman, Randolph
was always prominent last season in the
125 class. In the first moto, Robbie
creating incredibly dusty conditions for
those behind them along the straight in
front of the new grandstand, forcing
them all to slow down appreciably.
Gray moved into a comfortable lead
from Davies and Mike O'Connor
(Bultaco) while a little way back a
mighty battle was being fought out
between Tyrone Stevenson (Castrol
Kawasaki), Peter Hill (Kolbenschmidt
Husqvarna), Garth Gwillam (Durity
KTM) and Rod Bergstrom (BP
Yamaha).
Stevenson was cutting through the field
as he moved up to third place behind
Gray and Davies, while Martin Jones
and Rod Bergstrom finished fourth and
fifth. While Jones had a tremendous
start in the second moto, Gray soon
took the lead from Martin with
Bergstrom and Peter Smith pushing
hard. Robbie Wicks became a crowds
hero by working through from fourth
place to second on the last lap, with
brilliant sustained riding.
The most spectacular pile-up at thë
meeting occured at the start of the third
250 heat, leaving a rather battered
and bewildered Horace Bergstrom
(Texas Suzuki) almost a lap behind the
leader, Tyrone Stevenson. Stevenson
was obviously determined to show his
class, and this he did by winning with
his old dash from Robbie Wicks and
Rod Bergstrom.
The start of the 1 25 cc Senior class was
delayed while attempts were made to
dampen down the dust, and the delay
became even more prolonged when the
watercart sank to it's axles in mud.
After several unsuccessful attempts to
extricate it, it was decided to modify the
'track, cutting out the section in which
the watercart was stuck. The 125 competitors
then set out on one lap to have
a look at the new track, and when the
first heat was eventually started,
champion Grant Maben on his incre-
'dibly fast Honda Super TT went into an
immediate lead followed by Gary
Bergstrom, Greg Wilson, Deon du
Plessis (Castro! Sportsman Lager
Honda) and Roy Gardner. Deon du
Plessis wasted no time in pulling up to
third position with Gardner lying
fourth. After five laps Maben had already
started lapping the slower riders,
and established an unbeatable lead.
Bergstron filled second place with du
Plessis, Gardner and Darryl Werner
(BP Racing with Yamaha) finishing in
'that order. The second moto was virtually
a repeat of the first, except that
Bergstrom was suffering with mechanical
trouble, so du Plessis and Gardner
each moved up one place. Gary Draper
(Draper Plant Hire YZ E), who must be
the most improved 1 2 5 cc rider this
year, showed up extremely well as did
Robert Campbell, and Shahn Rowe
(Wolf Super TT Honda), both having
their initiation into Senior championship
racing.
The surprise of the third moto was provided
by another ex-junior Gary Keyser
(Payless Movers Castrol Honda) who
got the holeshot with Roy Gardner hot
on his tail followed by Maben, Greg
Wilson, Deon du Plessis and Gary
Draper. In spite of a game battle,
Keyser was unable to hold onto his lead
and was overtaken by Grant Maben
and Gardner, with Deon also taking
him by the third lap. With Maben once
again in a commanding lead, real interest
wás in the tussle for second place
between Gardner and du Plessis, with
Deon eventually gaining the upper
hand.
The non-championship Minicross
events saw Gary Campbell take top
Yamaha international and South
African motor cycle sales roaring into
top gear.
According to figures recently made
available in Japan, Yamaha was the
only motor cycle manufacturer to
show a gain in itsshafeof the Japanese
export market in 1977 while, in South
Africa, the company was up 45.8 per
cent on sales by the end of October.
"The figures for January - December,
1977, are not yet availabl~ but, by the
end of October last year, the total
motor cycle market in this country had
increased by 18.4 per cent in comparison
with the same period in 1976,"
said Yamaha's Bruce Johnstone. "At
the same time our sales were up 45,8
per cent!"
In Japan Yamaha exported 1 280 953
motor cycles in 1977, compared with
795 34 1 in 1976 and its share of the
Japanese export market rose from
27.2 per cent to 32,7 per cent. In 1978
the company has set its sights on total
export sales of more than two million.
In the same period Honda's share of
the Japanese export motor cycle
market was 39,8 per cent compared
with 42,1 per cent in 1976, Suzuki went
to 19,6 per cent in 1977 from 21,7 per
cent the year before and Kawasaki to
7,9 per cent from 9,0 per cent in 1976.
Yamaha figures did not include 'exports'
to Taiwan and Korea as the
company maintains a manufacturing
facility in Taiwan to which eKO
(completely knocked down) motor
cycles are sent. If these production
figures are added to the Yamaha export
total, the company believes it is
now 'neck and neck' with Honda in the
international sales race.
"We have high hopes of being No. 1
internationally in 1978," said Mr. Johnstone.
"In South Africa we are pushing
ahead with our sales drive and believe
that our 1977 growth can be attributed
to our recently expanded and now exceptionally
good model range, the
incredible co-operation and support
we have received from Yamaha,
Japan, who are vitally interested in our
market, and our solid dealer network.
"The expansion of our dealer network
with key new dealers in important
areas and the knowledge that we place
so much importance on our customer
technical service and parts availability,
has played a major role.
"On thlsthema we are running, during
1978, a continual series of dealer orientated
service seminars. We will also be
showing new bikes during the year and
Yamaha's new XS Eleven, the fastest
motor cycle made in Japan, has been
given rave reviews in the international
motor cycle press.
The XS Eleven - so called because of
its 1 100cc capacity and its standing
quarter-mile time of 11 seconds - is
due for general release in South Africa
in April.
Typical of the pr.inted comments made
about the new Yamaha superbike is
this extract from the authoritative
American magazine, 'Cycle Guide'.
"Yamaha's new XS Eleven is not only
the King of Superbikes but also the
Prince of Touring. Start up this four
cylinder, re-arrange the roads if you so
wish, venture into the valley and fear
not (any other bike) . . . this is the
meanest motor cycle in the valley."
Added 'Cycle' - another famous
American publication:
"It has now become clear that in
Yamaha's fight for a larger share of the
highway market, the XS750 triple was
only a left hook. Now they've delivered
a genuine knock-out: their new
XS1100 four and in this mode we have
the new King of Super bikes .... with
the Yamaha Eleven's arrival we have
an expanded standard by which such
machines henceforth must be judged."
The all-new XS1100 is now undergoing
road tests in Britain and early reports
are exceptionally favourable.
"It seems obvious that our new top
bike has taken the overseas motorcycle
critics by storm," said Yamaha's
Bruce Johnstone. "Since our announcement
that we intended irnporting
the machine into South Africa
we have been innundated by queries
and even firm orders
YAMAHA
•
With the arrival of the new Yamaha XS
Eleven, the SS750 and the SR500 - all
due in South Africa early this year -
Yamaha will have completed an important
phase in their switch to a
completely new superbike range.
"For years Yamaha has been an acknowledged
leader in two-stroke motor
cycle technology," said Yamaha's
Bruce Johnstone. "But the company
foresaw the immense changes that
would be necessary to meet the varying
demands of the international
motor cycle market.
"To meet the challenge head on we
had to create what boiled down to a
complete new range of super bikes -
something virtually unprecedented in
the history of the Japanese motor
cycle industry.
"And, unlike many large industrial
giants, Yamaha was firmly committed
to the precept that our new bikes
would be designed and engineered to
suit the users' exact requirements
rather than dictating what we thought
he wanted. This involved an immense
amount of research before even the
initial development work could be
started.
"This necessitated a change to fourstroke
technology for many of our new
road bikes. Many people believe that
this is a new field for Yamaha but what
is not generally known is our company's
long history of advanced fourstroke
know-how which includes the
manufacture of special sports engines
built for Toyota over the past decade."
The phased introduction of the totally
new range of four-stroke Yamaha road
bikes in South Africa was planned to
complement the expanded and improved
Yamaha range in a field in
which the company has long been preeminent
... the two-stroke commuter/
off road bikes and the 50cc schoolboy
market.
The programme kicked into high gear
in 1976 with the lntroductlon of
Yamaha's XS500 and XS750, followed
in rapid succession, in 1977, by improved
versions "of the already well
The Pheiffer family of CapeTown must
be one of the fastest around. Not
content with having former racing
driver Henry Pheiffer in the family, his
son, Adrian Pheiffer, former Western
Province RacingChampion, has got his
three sons into the act too.
The bays, Dale, Roy and Earl, are the
only three brothers to simultaneously
participate as a team in a single sport
in South Africa. They have don exceptionally
well in almost every motocross
race they have entered. BP Southern
Africa, in conjunction with Yamaha
will sponsor them as part of the BPI
Yamahateam for 1978.
Although Dale, 10. is prepared to take
tips from his older brothers, he is no
novice when it comes to motocross
racing. He won ten races on his 80cc
Yamaha in 1977 even though he has
beenracing for only two years.
Dale occasionally demonstrates his
riding skill at minicross - motocross
for under-twelves - at Goodwood,
Cape.Although not as experienced as
his brothers, his performance in the
past two years makes him a strong
contender for the South African
Championships.
Roy, 15 and Earl, 17. have been riding
for six years. Roy, the 1977 Western
Province 100cc Junior Champion, won
every race he finished last year.'He will
be riding a 125cc Yamaha this year to
qualify him for the senior races.
The brothers are determined to make
it to the top. It was only a broken wrist
that put Earl out of motocross action
for eight months last year. He too, will
be riding a 125ccin 1978.
For weeks the behind-the-scenes activity
had become more and more
intense as the stage was prepared for
the big day. Well the big day arrived-
April 15th, and so had all those who
were to perform on the stage, which
took the form of Killarney off-road
raceway in Cape Town. The occassion
was the second round of the Sportsman
Larger S.A. Motocross championships.
The list of entrants read like the
"Who's Who" in motocross, and they
were all here to contest the points for
the championship.
The usual time/distance regulations of
20 minutes plus one lap applied to the
senior classes and 15 minutes plus one
lap for the juniors.
Walking around the track it was
evident the organisers were intent on
making this not only a day of races but
a test of skill and endurance of both
men and their machines. The track was
ideally damp after a few days of rain
which had been blown away by the good
old south-easter in time for the race
day. This was good because there was
little chance of the track becoming a
dust-bowl, yet it was at the same time
not going to be a mud-bath for the
riders.
Practice showed us nothing we didn't
already know. The only real drama was
with Deon du Plessis' bike which had
Deon's father doing a major modification
to the chain tensioner which had Bunny Shandler in complete control (Photo: Viv Zimmerman)
broken.
As the time' drew near for the first race
of the day - the SOOccMX for seniors
- so the tension grew greater and it
was all released in an explosion of
sound and a blur of colour as the riders
left the start line after the elastic
tension had been released for the start
of the race.
MOTO ONE - Coming into ,the first
bend the pack was led by Ian Mac-
Millan, Bunny Shandler and Mike Hermanson.
The crowd immediately came
alive with the two local riders up front
with the leaders. Chris Brand wasn't
particularly keen on this arrangement
and set about catching and passing
Hermanson. Shandler, who was riding
with a sore knee, was in the meanwhile
making an erstwhile, yet unsuccessful
attempt, to get close to MacMillan.
With Brand now in third Shandler
came under pressure from him. Lap
after lap positions changed and the
local riders seemed unable to hold on to
their positions.
After 10 minutes tommy Trefz had
worked his way up to third position,
with no change up front where Mac-
Millan was circulating ahead of Chris
Brand. After 15 minutes Graham
Green made a run for high points. This
added to the general excitement as he
passed rider after rider, never slowing
for even the slower riders who could
Moto X SA Vol.2 No.5 Page 26
have baulked him.
Barry Falconer had also nosed in front
of Hermanson and Shandler by this
time. Thus, at the chequered flag the
first five riders across the line were
MacMillan, Brand, Green, Trefz and
Falconer.
MOTO TWO - First off the line were
Tommy Trefz, Ian MacMinan, Chris
Brand, Mike Hermanson, M. White
and B. Shandler.
Graham Green and Barry Falconer
pulled out of the bunch and began to
pressurize Shandler. The three leading
the race were beginning to pull away
from the rest as they each challenged
for a better position.
Just as eight minutes went up Green
passed Shandler and continued his
chase after the leaders. Hermanson now
came under pressure from Green. Chris
Brand forced himself passed Trefz.
Three laps later Green had got in front
of Hermanson and Shandler had
slipped back a place as Falconer got in
front of him.
Green was having a fantastic race.
Nothing seemed able to go fast enough
.to keep. him at bay for he hauled in
third man, Tommy Trefz.
The pressure from Brand caused
MacMillan to make one of his rare mistakes
and as he went wide Brand went
through to first spot. This was not for
long as Mac recovered\ quickly and
rode well to once more recover first
place. Green kept going and now had
Brand in his sights. Riding superbly he
got himself into second place and then
made MacMillan his target. With no
more than three minutes 'Ieft he shot
passed MacMillan and even managed
to increase his lead.
Hermanson, after riding well, parted
company with his bike in the esses
which put him out of contention for
high points. The race closed with Green
across the line first followed by Mac-
I MilIan, Brand, Trefz, Falconer and
Shandler.
MOTO THREE - Forty odd minutes
of hard riding had begun to tell on the
riders of the big bikes, for as they came
out for the last 20 minutes they all
looked slightly weary, yet none could
afford to let up and allow the other an
easy win - points were vital to all.
MacMillan, Green and Beattie were
first away. As they entered the first
bend Beattie had come up into second
and the way he was riding had no intention
of giving it tip. No doubt the
body-weariness MacMillan had confessed
to just before the start of the race
was a contributing factor to his falling
heavily on the back section of the
circuit. One immediately noted a
slowing down and as the laps reeled by
he dropped lower and lower down the
field.
Hermanson was another to take a
tumble after a jump - only his race
was over. The muscles in his shoulder
and arm had been torn. M. White was
another participant in this event to take
a spectacular tumble.
While all this was going on Graham
Green and Chris Brand were fighting it
out for first place and 15 points which
eventually went to Brand as Green
began to slow up. At the chequered flag
we saw Brand, Falconer, Beattie, Trefz
and Green come in for the lion's share
ofthe points.
Overall placings for the three heats: C.
Brand. G. Green. I. MacMillan. B
Falconer. T. Trefz.
SENIOR 250cc MX - MOTO ONE-
As the time came around for the start of
this series of races, the question being
asked was "How will Mike Hopkins
fare on his home-track after his poor
showing at Brickor? We were pleasantly
surprised.
A bunch of riders got away from the
line in this race and as they went into
the first bend and toward BP jump
there just did not seem to be enough
room for all of them. What transpired
Tyrone Stevenson (206) passes Mark Davies (203) on his way to taking the
chequered flag. (Photo: Bm Rosenberg)'
Moto X SA Vol.2 No.5 Page 27

must surely be rated as the most spectacular
prang seen at Killarney. In the
rush over the jump Geoff Gray and Pete
Smith collided in mid-air, crashing to
earth in front of the crowd in the clubhouse
stand. The nett result of this was
Smith's left leg had both bones broken
and Gray's elbow was dislocated. A
spectacular prang, but it put out two
riders bound to have made things
tougher for the others to score points.
Robbie Wicks had a poor start but with
his immaculate riding it wasn't long
before he was in third place and challenging
Hopkins. After 10 minutes he
passed Hopkins only to have second
snatched back by Hopkins. Once more
Wicks worked his way passed Hopkins
only to be held up by a slow bike on a
bend for Hopkins to go past never to be
headed again. What a dice!
What happened to Tyrone Stevenson?
He had won by some 15 seconds riding
out front from the start.
MOTO TWO - Robbie Wicks and
Mike Hopkins continued their exciting
duel in this race, thrilling the crowd
with some fine riding.
Where was Stevenson? He was lying
eighth after a bad start. Slowly -
actually not so slowly - but surely he
worked his way up to third.
Robbie Wicks was trying everything he
knew to get passed Mike Hopkins. He
finally made it by keeping his throttle
wide open on the Texan take-off and
outjumped Hopkins. This was really
spectacular stuff! So we saw Stevenson
now trying to catch Hopkins. He failed
Arnold Burton making ready.
- so the race ended with Wicks home
first, Hopkins second, Stevenson third.
Rob Bergstrom doing a lonely stint in
fourth.
MOTO THREE - Stevenson didn't
like coming in third in the last race, so
he did the hole-shot and that was where
he stayed - out front.
Hopkins was the one to get away badly
in this race. After five minutes he had
got up to third place putting Rob
Bergstrom and Jones behind him in the
process.
Halfway through Rob Bergstrom got
the better of Hopkins and moved back
into third, where he stayed, leaving
Hopkins to worry about Jones and
Gwillam who were pressing for higher
positions.
Stevenson picked up the 15 POINTS,
Wicks 12, Bergstrom the lO, Hopkins
the eight and Jones the six.
SENIOR 12Scc MX - MOTO ONE-
44 riders and one other -t-r- Grant
Maben. This man is no rider - he is a
phenomenon. I don't think anyone has
ever' told him he is allowed to throttle
off now and then.
Anyway Maben didn't get away first,
but it wasn't long before he was in
front. Going very well he suddenly
became one of those who parted
company from his bike as his chain
came off. With bike coming to a sudden
halt, Maben became a projectile. That
ended his race.
Gary Bergstrom was now in first place
and Deon du Plessis in second. There
wasn't much change thereafter and
Bergstrom came home first followed by
S. Rowe. N. Milosevich.
MOTO TWO - Arnold Burton along
with Mark Connelly were the local
hopes in this class and in the previous
Killarney. (Photo: Viv Zimmerman)
heat Connelly had filled eighth position,
Burton ninth and Peter Claxton,
another local, tenth. However, in this
heat Burton's big end seized, Connely
seemed unable to get all the power he
needed and Claxton was well down the
field.
Maben was doing his usual thing and
going very fast. Only this time
Bergstrom and du Plessis seemed to
have found a few more "horses",
because they kept a lot closer to Maben.
Fast, spectacular racing was being witnessed.
Fast spectacular stops were also
seen as Maben's chain parted company
with his bike again. Consequently
Bergstrom took over the front position,
again followed by du Plessis, Darryl
Werner and G. Keyser.
MOTO THREE - Third time lucky
for Maben? He was certainly circulating
very fast seemingly intent on getting
as far in the front as possible. After 10
minutes he had already put 15 seconds
between himself and Gary Bergstrom
who was having his work cut out to hold
off Deon du Plessis.
The spectators watched Maben increase
his lead and saw him come off "the wall
of death" to stop right in front of them
at this vantage point. His chain had
come off for the third time.
Deon du Plessis had in the meantime
been passed by Keyser who had improved
with each ride. Result:
Bergstrom, Keyser, du Plessis, D.
Werner and G. Wilson.
Overall results of the day: G.
Bergstrom; D. du Plessis; D. Werner;
G. Keyser; G. Wilson.
JUNIOR l00cc MX - MOTO ONE ~
Neil Riddell had won pretty comfor-
.tably in the first round of the Nationals
at Briekor and showed us why as he
rode away from the rest of the field. It
was left to Gary Beuthin and Norman
Miller to make a race of it for second
place, which Beuthin filled. Solomon
was fourth and A. Carr fifth.
MOTO TWO - Riddell was out front
again this time but was under constant
pressure from Gary Beuthin.
These yound riders were now having to
contend with a far rougher track than
in the first moto and the field became
strung out. Riddell and Beuthin rode
well to finish ahead of A. Carr, P.
O'Keefe and D. Solomon.
JUNIOR 12Sec MX - MOTO ONE -
Here was a demonstration of some fine
riding from these young men. The
competition was between all the Transvaal
riders with none of the local entrants
showing up very well.
Kenny van der Merwe, Tony Riddell
and 'Wayne Jones were up front with
positions alternating constantly. Lower
down the field there were many good
dices going on as well, which added to
the general excitement.
Wayne Jones was the one to cross the
finish line first, followed by Tony
Riddell, v.d. Merwe, de Jager and
Goosen.
MOTO TWO - Again it was the first
three in the first moto who were contesting
the lead, this time joined by van
Straaten. His bid didn't last long as the
other three pulled away with their
superior riding.
While lying in fourth spot van der
Merwe did something silly and lost two
places. Stung by this set-back he set off
after the front six. One by one he reeled
them in. Riding an outstanding race he
got up with the leaders and eventually
put hir-self in front to be followed home
by W. Jones, Tony Riddell, Grobler and
de Jager.
MINICROSS - Eleven riders came
under starters orders but there was
really only one rider in it. Gary Butcher
rode away from the others in both heats
of this event.
Coming in second on both occassions
was D. McClaughlin, while Gary Campbell
took third place overall for the day
by riding into a fourth and a third
position in the two heats, which consisted
of three laps of the circuit in each
heat.
Syringa 11 th March, '7 8
Winning is a mysterious thing. What
makes a winner is even more mysterious.
Its not all equipment and ability
although these are definitely prime
factors.
Maybe it's just a screaming desire to be
out there in front. A desire so strong
you can almost taste it.
Whatever it is, Grant Maben's got lots
of it. This has been clearly showed in
the way he swept the last season as was
again displayed in the Syringa Club
meet. on the 11 th March.
Maben made a clean sweep of both the
125, 250 MX classes riding his fiery
Red Sportsman Lager Castrol Hondas.
The 1 st 1 2 5 moto Grant led from
start to finish his only opposition
coming from Roy Gardner on a Texas
Watches Suzuki. Deon du Plessis
(Sportsman Lager Castrol Honda) who
seems to be following in Grants footsteps
was unfortunately involved in a
pile up at the start but still managed to
fight his way back to 3 rd place behind
Gardner. Gary Keyser also put in a
good ride on his Wolf Honda, challenged
du Plessis for his third place.
Maben again walked the 2 nd moto but
this time Deon remained unhindered,
managed second ahead of Gardner who
had to settle for third. Further back in
the field Brian Becker (Mazista Slate
Suzuki), Tommy Maben and Nicky
Milosevich had tremendous battles
which kept the spectators more than entertained.
Grant again won both motos of the
250 class aboard .one of the potent new
Red Rocket Hondas. Quite a few of the
big names did not put in an appearance
with Horace Bergstrom and Chris
Brand still nursing their leg injuries,
Charlie Tissen with his smashed wrist
and Tyrone Stevenson still awaiting his
new works Kawasaki.
In the first heat it was Davies (Draper
Plant Hire CR2 5 0 R) in 2 nd Place
behind Maben which was quite an
achievement as his hand injury was not
100% healed and still gave a few problems.
He held onto second until the last lap
when he was surpassed by Jones (Shell
Suzuki).
The second saw Jones and P. Hill
(Kolbenschmidt Husky) have a tremen-
.dous tussle for 2 nd place - behind
Grant of course. The place eventually
went to Hill with Martin Jones 3 rd.
Toby Venter and Henri Steyn also put
up some excellent rides.
The 500 class combined with the
250 's was dominated by Butch
Hirschon a Bultaco. He was followed in
by Hallsworth, also Bultaco and W.
Henning on a Shimwells Honda.
Wayne Jones led the 1 st moto of the
1 25 Highschool wire to wire on his
Wolf Honda. He was hotly pursued by
the boy wonder Tony Riddell (Yamaha)
but managed to grimly hold on to his
leading position. Rob Larney was unfortunately
sidelined by a pile-up at the
start and 3 rd eventually went to Symm
Grobler.
In the second heat Riddell made no
mistake and soon passed Kenny van der
Merwe for the win. Geoff Nel and Gary
Goosen had a great battle for third with
Goosen proving the victor.
The 100 Juniors was totally dominated
by Neil Riddell (Yamaha). Second place
went to Andy Carr ahead of Beuthin,
Leon Matthews rode well to eventually
take jth on 'his Suzuki. Riddell had to
fight for his 2 nd moto win as he was
challenged strongly by Beuthin.
Matthews again went all out to clinch
third spot.
The Enduro class was taken by Dennis
Casey (Can Am), Anthony Phillips was
2 nd and Dowling 3 rd. Strugnell who
missed the 1 st heat, won the second on
a PE2 5 O. This time Dowling was
second. Dowlings consistent placings
gave him first overall.
Gary Butcher easily took the win in the
1 st Minicross heat on his kitted Suzuki.
Charlie Bezuidenhout was 2 nd and
John Hardiman 3 rd. The second heat
was won by Bezuidenhout after Butcher
came down. Hardiman was again third.
The first moto of the Highschool
support was won by Alan Taylor on his
Mugen kitted Honda. Peter Hills on the
draper Yamaha was second after falling
off with Hayward third.
Hills is definately going to be a kid to
watch. Remember the name.
3 rd round of the Star Inter-school
challenge was taken by Deon du Plessis
riding for Linden High. Gary Keyser
sneaked past Wayne Jones after he fell
to take 2 nd for Sandown High. Charlie
Cramer was third for Damelin, all were
mounted on Hondas.
EDITORIAL
Tbis edition of Moto X SA brings
you the 9th newsletter of our club
with only one edition being missed,
that of last month, due to a change
in the publishing date whilst I was
on holiday. People are beginning to
show more interest in the newsletter
and its contents (and hence its influence)
due to the regularity of the
release of the magazine, as weU as
its high quality. Its national distribution,
too, is causing our club to
become better known throughout
the country, a big plus as far as
membership is concemed.
The Four Wheel Drive Club of
South Africa section of this
magazine is now only just being
sponsored by the advertisers appearing
in tbis section of the
magazine. I would like to thank
them, on behalf of the club, for their
support. We need these advertisers
to keep appearing in this space so
please support them.
I would Uke to thank Gary and Viv
Whyte for having supported us for
aD the past editions. We reaDy
appreciate it and we wish you
strength and success with the future
of Moto X SA.
Having spent a pleasant month's
holiday, in February, down in the
Cape, I had the opportunity of
meeting the members and committee
of the newly formed Westem
Cape branch of our club. Jenny, our
chUdren and I were warmly received
by aUin the club and I would like to
thank Roy van Schoor, in particular
for his hospitality. Whilst
down there I attended a social outing,
an evening noggin and a special
committee meeting. The noggin as
weU as the special committee
meeting were extremely interesting
and the soclal eutlng is reported in a
seperate article in tbis edition.
Tbis month's edition also sees the
start of a new series of personality
sketches, a report from Vic Herron
on the 1978 Merkat and Wildgoose
500, a report on the Motorbike
Grand Prix at Bapsfontein (an event
on which our club assisted), some
cartoons from Martin Potgieter in
Pietermaritzburg and a report on
the social outing on Sunday, 23rd
May, organised by Ivor Karran.
PERSONAL SERVICE
OF
JOHN DOUBELL
Your specialised vehicle needs specialist
attention. John Doubell will
personally do your work in
our fully equipped "Vorkshops
which carry a full
range of factory spares.
The formation of the Western Cape
branch of the 4 x 4 club took 2 years to
materialise, starting at first early 1976
with outings with buggies (see photographs)
and later four wheel drive
vehicles. In August 1977 Roy, Chris,
Tony and others decided to form a club
and at this stage Tony mentioned the 4
x 4 club in Johannesburg. It was realised
that the formation of a club (constitution
etc.) was quite a task and so
they considered becoming a branch of
the Four Wheel Drive Club of South
Arica. I am pleased that they did
because, after having met them and
having gone on an outing with them
they are decidedly a credit to our club.
Their inaugural meeting was at the
Holiday Inn (Bellville) in December
1977.
SOCIAL OUTING - TRANSPORT
MUSEUM - HEIDELBURG
An extremely good turnout for this
outing with 28 four wheel drive vehicles
and 5 cars being in attendance.
After meeting on the main Durban
Road at 9,30 we set off for the museum.
Extremely interesting, with many old
vehicles but great disappointment for
Jeep owners as there were no Jeeps in
the museum.
After this to Ivor's farm for a braai and
after lunch an hilarious obstacle course
through the trees with the driver being
blindfolded and the navigator having to
place bottles over pegs planted il) the
ground (without leaving the vehicle).
Poor John Friend had his radio mike
held "on" by an elastic band, and
everyone was treated to running
commentary over Austin's P.A. of the
instructions (?) being bandied about
Curfin leyland.
171 Eloff Street Ext.•
between John and Leslie as they tried to
traverse the obstacle course. Liz Herron
was the first person through the course
whilst Oigen Nick, with his wife driving,
ended up IO'miles off course.
After this river crossings were attempted
with Peter M. Wilson's winch
working overtime as conditions were
extremely muddy.
Thanks to Ivor for a well organised
event.
PERSONALITY SKETCH
Over the next few months I will be presenting
a series of personality sketches
of people who are of interest to us as
members ofthe SCc.
Who better to start with than the chairman
of our Western Cape Branch, Roy
van Schoor. He was born in Cape Town
in June, 1950 and grew up in the apple
area, Elgin. He attended schools in
Grabouw, Rondebosch, Hottentots
Holland High School and Cape Tutorial
College. From the age of 17 he yearned
for a 4 X 4 vehicle and 1970 found him
in the Army in the Transport section
(playing with Bedfords and Land
Rovers). He also served in the Signals
section and after a spell of border duty
he was discharged from the Army and
he joined Burroughs Machines,
working on mechanical as well as electronic
machines, and is at present involved
in computer engineering.
He was a member of the Hottentots
Holland Dramatic Society and served
on that committee for 3 years. At
present he is a member of the Mountain
Club of South Africa and is in the
rescue _squad for the Hottentots
Holland Section. His hobbies include
MEERKAT AND WILDGOOSE 500
Those wild farmers at Barberspan don't
give you much time to recover. Just a
few months after their last bush bashing
session up it comes again and
Austin's "Major Domo" or to be more
accurate "Enforcer", Brian Elridge
calls out the names of the volunteers
from amongst the ranks of the faithfull,
promptly informs us in the nicest way
that we should' be at the Elgro Hotel at
not later than llh30 on Friday 24th
Feb.
At llh15 after an expidition from the
wilds on the Free State with my assis-
.tants Frikkie, Ian and Tony, one of
whom was seriously ill (hangover) we
arrived at the meeting place. Trembling
in my boots, I looked around, nobody
there. Half past eleven and up rolls
Gordon and Pierre, so we all sit down
and discuss the remarkable similarity
between the Four Wheel Drive Club
and the Army, you know "hurry up and
wait". Anyway to cut a long story short,
at 12 o'clock on the dot up rolls Austin
and Brian, Keith and Kevin, Franscois ,
Chris (it's always good to see Chris, at
least we know he has not skipped the
Exactly 12h30 Brian has persuaded us
to get organised and follow him to the
golf club, which we promptly do,
arriving there from three different
directions. We are then parked about
10 metres from the start/finish line of
the round the golf course circuit which
gives us a good view of the action as well
as a few minor heart attacks when some
of the competitors, under or over estimate,
and drive rather close to us. We
were then called together and given our
instructions, and introduced to our
guides who were to take us into the
wilds of Boputhaswana and abandon
us. We were the last to leave as our
guide was also running a refuel stop for
the motorbikes, and had to round up all
the precious liquid before we could
leave.
Arriving al our marshalling point about
150 km from the start we had just
enough daylight left to set up camp, unfortunately
we could not have a campfire
as there was a difficulty in finding
dead thorn trees amongst the live ones,
so we had to be civilised and cook by
gas. We also had to guard the fuel
dump as our guide had a much more
comfortable place to spênd the night.
On Saturday morning when the jackals
went to bed, we got up and struck
camp, and moved across the road to
where our marshal's point was to be.
There we would provide a double function
of being marshal's and also
stopping the competitors immediately
before they crossed the public road. At
about five past ten the first vehicle
arrived. It was Bobby Olthoff in the
Nomad, and from then on we were kept
quite busy. Thanks to the organisers the
competitors were pretty well spread out,
very few of them were less than one
minute apart. The first motorbikes
came past just after 12 o'clock, most of
them heaving sighs of relief when they
heard that they could get fuel a hundred
metres down the track. When the
competitors reached us the general
opinion was that this year the route was
quite difficult and this was borne out by
the number of people who did not
finish.
Wehn four o'clock in the afternoon
came around we closed our marshalling
point, and the gate to the main
road, then started to sweep back along
the route, where we collected half of
someone's exhaust system and inspected
a dead Toyota Landcruiser to make
sure no none needed assistance. On
reaching the position of the marshal up
route from us, we headed back to
DelaryviIle at high speed, where we
found Peter, Gorden and Pierre who
looked as if they had just stepped out of
a lovely hot bath, also my wife Liz who I
was doubly glad to see as she had
brought the money for the beer.
After a quick run down to the golf
course, where I gave all the reIevent
documents to John Salters (who was
cooking the books), we returned to the
hotel and straight to the showers where
we added our quota of sand to the
sewerage system. When we were nice
and clean we went outside where we met
Brian and Austin who looked as if they
could do with a bath, even though it was
dark.
Later we all went down to the prizegiving/dance
and braai which was up to
the usual Baberspan standard, Le. the
food was delicious and the refreshments
flowed like water. At various intervals
all the other marshals rolled up, and we
met all our old friends and made some
new ones, listened to all the hard luck
stories, and at a disgraceful hour on
Sunday morning collapsed into bed.
The Barberspan was over for another
year and thanks to the hard work put in
by Chris Mattie and Ian. it turned out
to be an enjoyable event. most probably
the fun event ofthe year.
OUTING: FISH HOEK TO KOMME-
TJIE, OVER THE DUNES.
At the social outing which I attended on
Sunday, 12th February, the aim was to
cross from Fish Hoek to Kommetjie
(False Bay to the Atlantic Ocean coast)
over towering dunes. It was overcast
and cold and throughout the day we
were to have showers. At the gathering
point at Fish Hoek there were 32
vehicles ranging from buggies, nomads,
2 wheel drive VW 181 (NATO staff car
with removable body panels) Land
Rovers, Jeeps, Landcruisers, Range
Rover, Fords and Chevs. Most of the
vehicles were very slick indeed with
wide rims and tyres, V6 and V8 motors
etc.
The large 4 x 4 badges on most of the
vehicles looked very smart. The event
was run with the 2 wheel drive vehicles
going first as they are the faster, followed
by the 4 wheel drive vehicles. The
terrain that we passed through before
getting to the big vegetation - free
dunes is very similar to that of Botswana.
The tyre pressures on most
vehicles was reduced to O,S - 0,7 kPa (7 -
10Ib/sq.in.).
The first major obstruction was a steep
descent and at the bottom through
slush and reeds in which first a Jeep and
then a Land Rover got stuck but dozens
of willing hands soon had them extricated
and on their way again. The
comradie between the club members
was fascinating to watch and it was to
continue throughout the day with
people on the scene as soon as anyone
got stuck.
The person who had the toughest time
of all on this outing was a chap driving
a Nomad which insisted on spinning its
rims inside its tyres, causing them to
blow-out. Through a process of elimin- .
ation four good tyres were eventually on
the vehicle (tyres having been borrowed
from another Nomad owner) and we
were soon trying to get on our way
again. I say "trying" because no matter
what, everytime the clutch was let out
the vehicle would bury it's back wheels
to the axle. Once again radio communication
proved its worth and soon
we had another crew back and after
much towing, grunting, cursing and
pushing the Nomad was on its way but
for the rest of the outing it got continually
stuck.
We dropped off the dunes and went
into a wilderness of 3 metre high dried
reeds. After much chaos here we arrived
at the midday braai spot. 38 vehicles
surrounded a single large fire and after
a pleasant braai, chin wag and display
of driving technique by Chris we lined
up and set off for the coast. As we left
the rain came down again, reducing visability
to approximately 100m. The rain
caused the upper surface of the sand to
Moto X S.A. Vol.2 NO.5 Page3S

This is worse than a b...... y rollercoaster. Dune bug gliding.
firm up and good cross-dune speeds
were established.
After reaching the coast we set off
towards Kommetjie stopping off at the
romantic wreck of the KAKAPO. This
ship was wrecked in the year 1900 when
the captain, seeing the lights of
Kommetjie, mistook them for the lights
of Cape Town, turned to starboard and
beached his ship.
Once at Kommetjie, pumping tyres was
the order of the day and every conceivable
type of pump came out. After this
we set off home on an extremely enjoyable
days outing.
BAPSFONTEIN GRAND PRIX
15-THAPRIL 1978
On the 15th April the Transvaal
Marshalls Association held this Elsinor
type event on the farm of Ralph
Velcich. The idea was for motorcycles
to do 8 laps of a 30 kilometre circuit on
this farm, and 4 x 4 club members were
asked to assist with marshalling and
radio communications. 11 members
attended and despite maps which
marked tar, roads arrived at the farm
with the assistance of radio directions!
They were given maps of the farm
which indicated various marhsalling
points (and radio control) with Shannon
Dunn operating main control.
On the way to showing one member
where he was going to marshall, the
road went around the edge of slightly
greasy pan and this member found the
only hole in the.road.
Because of the slippery surface, he
could not get himself out but luckily
there were 2 other members close by
who were able to winch him out. Other
than this there were no problems except
for the pulling out of an ambulance
which had decided to go and have a
look around the farm and promptly got
stuck.
The race itself started at 2p.m. with a
"one-line" mass start the bikes being
kick started at the drop' of a flag. It was
a fantastic sight to see 100 bikes plus
streaking across the field and left turning
onto theroad. At the road the dust
came up, but apart from a minor
coming together after the 3rd corner,
one bike began breaking up in half on
the outside of the pan. No problems 1st
lap, until the riders came around the
inside of the pan where bikes were engulfed.
One the next lap more got
bogged down in the same place, the 3rd
lap even more, the organisers decided to
alter the route cutting out this section.
In organising this ORRA radios proved
invaluable, and without them would
have made the job almost impossible. It
was at this stage that Francois
Rosseoux offerd his services to drag the
bikes out of the goo! I think he thought
this was going to be easy, but he took on
more than he bargained for and had
himself a ball wallowing in the mud.
With changing the course, bunting was
put across the old route and indicator
arrows put up, but some competitors
ignored this and rode over the bunting
with the result that Malcolm Pickard at
the T junction had bikes coming at him
from 2 directions at once. Then some
competitors realized that they had
missed out a section of the course, pas
the lap scorers and so came back. This
meant that Malcolm had bikes coming
at him from all 3 directions. Anyway it
all sorted itself out in the end (and the
mud).
The race was stopped after 7 laps,
mainly due to bad mud conditions. The
4 x 4 guys were then a tremendous help
to the organisers by collecting up the
bunting, arrows and markers as well as
reporting stranded bikes so that trailers
could pick them up. In some cases
the guys towed bikes in for competitors.
The finding of bikes which had gone
into the mealies sometimes proved interesting
as riders thought they had left
their bikes "somewhere in there". This
meant searching the com with a line of
helpers to help find the bikes. Everyone
and their bikes were brought in but
not until well after dark. Only then did
the 4 x 4 members lager and have themselves
a very enjoyable braai.
On behalf of TMA I would like to thank
all those who came out and helped us so
much. I hope you also enjoyed the
outing.
