The 1 9 7 8 Motocross season moved
into top gear at Briekor on Sat. 25th
March with the opening round of the
Sportsman Lager sponsored S.A. Motocross
championships. The organising
club TMX, have quite obviously put a
tremendous amount of work and money
into improvements both on and off the
track, but unfortunately a lot of the
spectator facilities were still incomplete
on raceday, and proved inadequate with
the very large crowd that turned up, one
of the biggest seen at Brickor.
The racing itself was a very high
standard indeed with machines even
quicker than last year, and' the riders
more determined than ever to make the
grade. So many of the competitors have
changed machines, sponsors, numbers,
and even classes, that it is going to take
quite a few meetings before one will be
able to recognise most of the field without
the help of a program.
The first championship heat of the
meeting was the 500 MX class, and
what a treat it was to see a good sized
field with Chris Brand on the Team
Kolbenschmidt Husqvarna taking an
immediate lead in the first heat, closely
attended by Butch Hirsch (Off Road
