Winning is a mysterious thing. What
makes a winner is even more mysterious.
Its not all equipment and ability
although these are definitely prime
factors.
Maybe it's just a screaming desire to be
out there in front. A desire so strong
you can almost taste it.
Whatever it is, Grant Maben's got lots
of it. This has been clearly showed in
the way he swept the last season as was
again displayed in the Syringa Club
meet. on the 11 th March.
Maben made a clean sweep of both the
125, 250 MX classes riding his fiery
Red Sportsman Lager Castrol Hondas.
The 1 st 1 2 5 moto Grant led from
start to finish his only opposition
coming from Roy Gardner on a Texas
Watches Suzuki. Deon du Plessis
(Sportsman Lager Castrol Honda) who
seems to be following in Grants footsteps
was unfortunately involved in a
pile up at the start but still managed to
fight his way back to 3 rd place behind
Gardner. Gary Keyser also put in a
good ride on his Wolf Honda, challenged
du Plessis for his third place.
Maben again walked the 2 nd moto but
this time Deon remained unhindered,
managed second ahead of Gardner who
had to settle for third. Further back in
the field Brian Becker (Mazista Slate
Suzuki), Tommy Maben and Nicky
Milosevich had tremendous battles
which kept the spectators more than entertained.
Grant again won both motos of the
250 class aboard .one of the potent new
Red Rocket Hondas. Quite a few of the
big names did not put in an appearance
with Horace Bergstrom and Chris
Brand still nursing their leg injuries,
Charlie Tissen with his smashed wrist
and Tyrone Stevenson still awaiting his
new works Kawasaki.
In the first heat it was Davies (Draper
Plant Hire CR2 5 0 R) in 2 nd Place
behind Maben which was quite an
achievement as his hand injury was not
100% healed and still gave a few problems.
He held onto second until the last lap
when he was surpassed by Jones (Shell
Suzuki).
The second saw Jones and P. Hill
(Kolbenschmidt Husky) have a tremen-
.dous tussle for 2 nd place - behind
Grant of course. The place eventually
went to Hill with Martin Jones 3 rd.
Toby Venter and Henri Steyn also put
up some excellent rides.
The 500 class combined with the
250 's was dominated by Butch
Hirschon a Bultaco. He was followed in
by Hallsworth, also Bultaco and W.
Henning on a Shimwells Honda.
Wayne Jones led the 1 st moto of the
1 25 Highschool wire to wire on his
Wolf Honda. He was hotly pursued by
