RAJAH LADIES’ GROUP 2016 Potentate Larry Bortz and Lady Barbara The Rajah Ladies is the widows group that meets at Chef Alan's Restaurant, Penn Ave. West Reading at 11:30 on the first Monday of the month, starting in March, going through December of each year. When a Noble passes and his lady receives a message of condolence from the Rajah Shrine office, they are given information about this group. This is a very stressful time, so in the past the Rajah Ladies would follow up that information with notes and personal contact with the widows. Having lost their long-time president, Kitty Young, in January of 2016, that process was interrupted. Rajah Ladies have continued to meet this last year, and are trying to revitalize their group. With the help of Potentate Larry Bortz, his Lady Barbara, and the Chief Aide’s Lady, Judithanne Snyder, the listing of widows was confirmed and widows from the past year were invited guests at the November Ladies Luncheon, as we continue to encourage their interest in Rajah Shrine. Lady Barbara did a short glass program for the group in mid-year called “What Have I Got” and Lady Deb Bowers arranged for The Hat Lady, Lisa High, to give a program on the history of headwear as part of their December holiday celebration. Members of the group also brought examples of hats that they owned and everyone enjoyed admiring and trying on hats. The Potentate served as the male hat model much to the delight of the ladies. It was a fun way to end their season and share some holiday cheer. The Ladies also had their yearly opportunity to donate to the Shriners Hospital for Children, and collected $125.00 which the Potentate presented at the Testimonial. If you are the widow of a Shriner and have missed the opportunity to visit with or belong to this group, please contact Judy Yorty, treasurer, at (717) 269-0199, to receive the mailing which she sends to pre-order lunch before the March meeting. Follow up on Ladies Jewelry & Fashion Show and the Ladies Luncheon The December issue of the Rajah News had great pictures of both the Jewelry and Fashion Event and the November Ladies Luncheon. Attendees had a wonderful time at both events. Here is some follow-up about the equally important results for the Shriners Hospital for Children. The proceeds of both events were combined and these Rajah Ladies events were able to donate $5000.00 to the Hospital’s 2016 Precision Guidance System Fundraiser. In addition, because of both the 2016 Potentate’s and the First Lady’s musical interests, $1,100.00 was designated to the musical program at the hospital to purchase items from the Arts Program’s wish list. 2016 Illustrious Potentate Larry Bortz and his Lady Barbara presented the checks after the November Hospital board meeting. They were able to see one of the 24 new items from the wish list, a table harp, that is used in the musical program to help provide musical therapy to comfort recovering patients. We are very proud and honored that the combined $6,100.00 is the largest donation that the Ladies events have given to date.
