From the Vicarage
February 2017
For complicated reasons I write this, long after Twelfth Night, with
the Christmas Tree still standing in the corner of the sitting room. The
enthusiasm with which decorations go up is rarely matched by the
enthusiasm for taking them down – unless you’re with Ebenezer
Scrooge – but it is not mere idleness that has kept it up longer than
tradition dictates. It is in fact another tradition, no less ancient, which
decrees that the greenery from Christmas stays up until Candlemas,
which falls on the 2nd February. You may know Herrick’s poem,
Candlemas Eve, which begins:
Down with the rosemary and bays,
Down with the misletoe ;
Instead of holly, now up-raise
The greener box (for show).
It’s a nice thought that in the seventeenth century churchmen like him
were hanging around hopefully under the mistletoe until practically the
beginning of Lent. I’m not sure why the tradition died out; perhaps
fatigue with Christmas now overtakes us on December 27th, which is not
so surprising considering it begins in September. In those days Christmas
was seen much more as a festival which began on Christmas Eve and
continued through Epiphany right up to Candlemas which
commemorates the prophet Simeon finally seeing the Holy Child, for
whom he has been waiting all his long life, brought to the temple. Light,
at last, in a dark world.
Thus times do shift ; each thing his turn does hold ;
New things succeed, as former things grow old.
Yours in Christ,
Fr Richard.

What goings on in the Belfry. Glad it
was not St Mary’s.
Victoria the Tower captain was having
assignations with the Grave digger in
the potting shed, the church warden
was trying to drug the Tower
Captain’s tea, another ringer was
helping herself to Belfry funds and
another selling the lead from the
church roof.
All completely fictitious.
Well done PEWS ( People
Entertaining with Style) , St Mary’s
actors, a thoroughly enjoyable
evening with £480.00 made for
church funds.

Bell Ringers Outing to
York
On Saturday 29th April the St Mary’s
Church Bell Ringers have arranged an
outing to the historic city of York.
They hope that with enough
passengers, they can keep the coach
fare to £12.00 (the same as last year).
This is an amazing bargain for a visit
to such a lovely city.
York was founded by the ancient
romans. Its huge 13th century Gothic
cathedral York Minister, has medieval
stained glass and 2 functioning bell
towers. The city walls form a walkway
on both sides of the River Ouse. The
Monk Bar gate houses an exhibition
tracing the life of 15th century
Plantagenet King Richard III.
There are so many things to see and
do in York, you will be spoilt for
choice.
From the number of museums:
The Railway Museum, York Castle
Museum, the Yorkshire Museum and
the JORVIK Viking Centre which will
re-open on Saturday 8th April 2017.
To shopping:
York will satisfy even the most
demanding shopper. Wander the web
of cobbled shopping streets to browse
the amazing array of independent
boutiques, vintage stores and popular
high street names. And of course you
cannot visit York without experiencing
its top visitor attraction - York Minister.
The minster is not only an
architecturally stunning building but is
a place to discover the history of York
over the centuries, its artefacts and
treasures.
The coach will leave Finedon at
9.00 am and will be returning from
York at 6.30 pm so there is time to
attend Evensong at the Cathedral.
If you would like to book a seat on the
coach, please put your name and
contact details on the list at the back
of the church or contact Pat Parker on
01933 680841.
Smartie Sunday
On Sunday 26th February we will give
everyone a tube of Smarties again and
ask them to fill it with 20p pieces. This
year we will be giving a small donation
to the Church Urban Fund from the
monies collected. The Church Urban
Fund was established as a response
to unmet needs of the community,
helping our neighbours. During
Advent the Church Urban Fund
challenged churches to a sponsored
‘Sleepout’ to help the homeless which
was very successful.
All across the country there are
families going without food, children
going to school hungry and parents
missing meals so their children can
eat.
Churches are being invited to host ‘Big
Pancake Parties’ in Lent to raise
money for those who would appreciate
your support this year. As the
Thursday Club raise money for the
Children’s Society with Pancake
Races we would like to give a
donation from our Lent Smartie tubes
to the Church Urban Fund.

Shrove Tuesday
28th February
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is
the traditional feast day before the
start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Lent - the 40 days leading up to
Easter - was traditionally a time of
fasting and on Shrove Tuesday,
Anglo-Saxon Christians went to
confession and were
‘shriven’ (absolved from their sins).
A bell would be rung to call people to
confession. This came to be called
the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung
today.
Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days
before Easter Sunday, so the date
varies from year to year and falls
between 3rd February and 9th
March. In 2017 Shrove Tuesday will
fall on the 28th February.
Shrove Tuesday was the last
opportunity to use up eggs and fats
before embarking on the Lenten fast
and pancakes are the perfect way of
using up these ingredients.
The pancake has a very long history
and featured in cookery books as far
back as 1439.
The tradition of tossing or flipping
them is almost as old: "And every
man and maide doe take their turne,
And tosse their Pancakes up for
feare they burne." (Pasquil's Palin,
1619).

In My day
the ramblings of Hubert James
In my day it was about this time of
year that you’d start to spot new cars
on the road. Rich folk used to like to
parade a car with the latest number
plate. Course, we never had such
things as cars in our house. If we
wanted to go anywhere we had a
choice; a bicycle, the bus or
Shanksies Pony.
Mind you we did have some history
with cars. My great grandfather used
to work for a car company down in
Oxford. He was the one with the brain
cell in our family. Ronald James, he
was a bit of a scientist. Physics was
his hobby. He could tell you all about
‘M’s’, squared ‘V’s’, ‘R’s’ and ‘F’s’.
Now the ‘F’ was about the only one I
could remember. It was Force.
Grampy Ron knew how to work out
the force something was likely to hit
you.
Although, I had a more basic method
of working out force, I could instantly
calculate the force his great big fist
was going to hit my head by the
speed it was coming at. And with
practise I could make sure I ducked.
I know he was a relative but he could
be a nasty piece of work. He didn’t
like people and I soon found out that
people in the village called him Bad
Ron James. Folk gave him a wide
berth.
But his skill with Physics meant that
he was perfect when it came to
designing cars. When the first cars
were built he would test them by
driving them up to Finedon. Folk were
fascinated by these strange
machines, chugging along the streets.
They’d gather to watch him drive by
and one or two would get in his way.
Unfortunately, people assumed he
would put the brakes on if they were
in his way. He didn’t and more than
once a poor pedestrian would be
bounced out of the way by his
radiator. Pedestrians made his blood
boil, especially when they dented his
car.
He went back to Oxford and designed
the first car bumper, to protect the
car. Well I say he designed it, but
some folk reckoned it was invented by
a bloke called Higgs who was a
Bosun on the Titanic. Grandad
insisted he was there first. He said his
bumpers could ‘rearrange particles’.
To save any argument he stopped
calling his a bumper and went with
the Bad Ron Collider instead.
Don't Swear At Other
Drivers!
Eddie was driving down the road and
a met a car coming the other way.
Although there was room to pass
easily, Eddie forced the oncoming car
to slow down and wound down his
window and shouted 'Pig'.
The other driver looked in his rear
view mirror and swore at Eddie.
Then his car hit the pig.

Peterborough giving generously
P
eterborough Diocese is
bucking the current trend for
other Dioceses across the
country. While many are losing
numbers of clergy, with Bishop
Donald’s plan we are growing in
clergy numbers.
Also, where the national average
numbers for givers are down, in
Peterborough Diocese those
numbers are up.
Nationally, the number of
individuals who give to their church
is down by 2.1%, but in
Peterborough numbers went up by
4%.
Parish finance statistics for 2014
were release last September and
show lots of positive indicators.
Nationally, the average giving per
person is up 4.1% - and giving as
an average of a person’s income, is
the highest it has been at 3.5%.
(This takes into account the
average national income, including
salaries, wages pensions benefits).
In Peterborough Diocese average
giving went up by 6%.
For the Diocese, the total income
that churches receive went up 9% -
almost three times the national
number of 3.8%.
What does this all mean?
Paul Adams, Peterborough
Diocese Stewardship Officer, said:
“I think nationally we’re doing a
better job of educating people,
teaching people about giving and
living generously. We have more
stewardship officers nationally, than
ever before.”
He said that there is an overall
theme for 2017.
“The message this year is about
living generous lives. The Old
Testament principle of tithing is still
a good and important measure, but
when Jesus came, he changed
everything. He gave himself
completely, and he calls us to do the
same.”
Paul said that living generous lives
is not just about the cash.
“Our response needs to be
generous in giving our time, talents
and finances completely to God.”
He said that there isn’t an exact
figure for generosity.
“Generosity for some may be 2% or
10% or maybe even 20 – 25%. In
Matthew 12 we have the story of the
Widows mite: she gave all she had!
The Archbishop of York is well known
for saying he gives 20% of his gross
income. We need to sort it out with
God, from the first of what we have,
not what is left over.
It's about being generous with our
whole lives and everything we have.”
Paul talked about other ways in
which we can give.
“One of my colleagues this week
sent me a great blog that reminded
me that we have the greatest gift to
share – our faith – and the gift of
Jesus.
If we would only talk about it and
share that with others a little more.
That would grow all of our churches!”
