In My day the ramblings of Hubert James In my day it was about this time of year that you’d start to spot new cars on the road. Rich folk used to like to parade a car with the latest number plate. Course, we never had such things as cars in our house. If we wanted to go anywhere we had a choice; a bicycle, the bus or Shanksies Pony. Mind you we did have some history with cars. My great grandfather used to work for a car company down in Oxford. He was the one with the brain cell in our family. Ronald James, he was a bit of a scientist. Physics was his hobby. He could tell you all about ‘M’s’, squared ‘V’s’, ‘R’s’ and ‘F’s’. Now the ‘F’ was about the only one I could remember. It was Force. Grampy Ron knew how to work out the force something was likely to hit you. Although, I had a more basic method of working out force, I could instantly calculate the force his great big fist was going to hit my head by the speed it was coming at. And with practise I could make sure I ducked. I know he was a relative but he could be a nasty piece of work. He didn’t like people and I soon found out that people in the village called him Bad Ron James. Folk gave him a wide berth. But his skill with Physics meant that he was perfect when it came to designing cars. When the first cars were built he would test them by driving them up to Finedon. Folk were fascinated by these strange machines, chugging along the streets. They’d gather to watch him drive by and one or two would get in his way. Unfortunately, people assumed he would put the brakes on if they were in his way. He didn’t and more than once a poor pedestrian would be bounced out of the way by his radiator. Pedestrians made his blood boil, especially when they dented his car. He went back to Oxford and designed the first car bumper, to protect the car. Well I say he designed it, but some folk reckoned it was invented by a bloke called Higgs who was a Bosun on the Titanic. Grandad insisted he was there first. He said his bumpers could ‘rearrange particles’. To save any argument he stopped calling his a bumper and went with the Bad Ron Collider instead. Don't Swear At Other Drivers! Eddie was driving down the road and a met a car coming the other way. Although there was room to pass easily, Eddie forced the oncoming car to slow down and wound down his window and shouted 'Pig'. The other driver looked in his rear view mirror and swore at Eddie. Then his car hit the pig.
