Message from our
Executive Director
2016 was an action-packed year for The Brokerage,
as we celebrated our 20th anniversary as a charity.
Alongside the celebrations and reflections, we also took a
long, hard look at what we want to achieve in the future.
Our new vision is:
A world where a young person’s ability and aspiration alone determine their
career path.
It would be good to think that in 2036 The Brokerage no longer needs to work to
achieve this vision.
Meanwhile, I am pleased to report that we have made significant progress with our
2016-19 strategic aims. We continue to strengthen our programmes and are
focusing on measuring the difference we make to the lives of young Londoners on
the one hand and to the diversity and inclusiveness of the corporate workplace on
the other.
I hope you enjoy reading about our achievements over the past 12 months. A key
highlight of 2016 for me was this comment from a Year 6 student attending St.
Agnes Primary School in Tower Hamlets at a City Careers Open House workshop at
CFC Underwriting:
“It was the best day ever!”
Bridget Gardiner
Executive Director
This young girl’s eyes were opened to a world she did not know existed. We’ve seen
so many of these lightbulb moments in our young people this year and it’s a
privilege to help them build their aspirations, skills and knowledge.
Thank you to all our partners - corporates, schools, volunteers and not-for-profit
organisations - for your support. We look forward to working with you all in 2017!
Setting the scene
Why we exist
• Despite being one of the world’s largest financial
centres, London’s financial districts are surrounded
by areas of severe deprivation, disadvantage and
income inequality.
• The world of work is changing rapidly and young
people need all the help they can get to ensure they
reach their full potential.
• Though London is currently leading the way in
terms of education standards, it is also ranked
highest in terms of youth unemployment.
• Young people from London have some of the
best and most exciting careers available on their
doorstep, but relatively few of them have the
information, guidance and support to help them
access these roles.
We are helping to bridge the gap, working towards
a world where a young person’s ability and
aspiration alone determine their career path.
37%
of employees in
the financial
services sector are
educated at
Our work
The Brokerage is a charity based in the City of London working in partnership with
businesses and institutions in London’s financial districts.
Our mission is to work with young people to raise aspirations, create access and
provide opportunities within financial and professional services to achieve diversity
in the workplace.
We’re committed to working with those students who are least likely to find roles in
these sectors. All the young people who take part in our programmes are or were
educated at state schools or colleges in Greater London.
We help them to compete on a level playing field with their more affluent peers by
providing experiences of work, opportunities to develop key employability skills
and, ultimately, paid jobs.
RAISING ASPIRATIONS
Our Education Team run a wide range of workshops for students from Year 6
through to Year 13 to raise the aspirations of students, equip them with an
understanding of the careers available to them and develop the skills and qualities
they will need to achieve their goals.
Through our education programmes, students are able to:
• Experience the world of work through visiting companies in London’s financial
districts
• Develop their confidence in key work-related skills through engaging with
business volunteers
• Develop their knowledge of the jobs that can be found across professional and
financial services
Many of the students from
Heathcote School and Science
College, in Waltham Forest, grow
up in families where university
and high-end jobs in the City of
London are out of reach. Through
Brokerage opportunities,
Heathcote students have started
to believe that they, too, are just
as capable and able to work in the
professional sectors of London.
The extraordinary work that
The Brokerage Citylink does is so
vital for the futures of our
students as they tirelessly seek to
give our students opportunities to
work within the City of London.”
Sixth form opportunities
We are increasingly finding that schools and students are calling out for
opportunities which allow teachers to put classroom learnings into the context of
the wider business world. Our sixth form opportunities really focus on how skills
and knowledge can translate from the classroom to the boardroom.
Specialised City-based workshops
In 2016, with support from Rabobank, we delivered 13 specialised workshops
taking an in-depth look at communications, IT, law and engineering.
The strength of these sessions lies in the fact that we design each workshop in
collaboration with businesses, using volunteers who are experts in their field to
create case studies that truly showcase the individual sectors.
Recruitment processes have changed a lot in recent years and more students than
The Barnett Waddingham-funded mock assessment centre programme began in
Through the programme, sixth form students learn about recruitment and
assessment practices, such as psychometric testing, group assessment tasks and
job interviews and have the opportunity to practise each area, receiving feedback
CREATING ACCESS
Through mentoring programmes, networking events and employability guidance,
we create unprecedented access to financial and professional services
opportunities for young non-advantaged Londoners.
Our mentoring programmes connect young people with employees at leading
London companies, providing an invaluable opportunity for mutual learning.
We offer mentoring programmes for students in Year 12 right through to
undergraduate level. Mentoring offers the opportunity for personal development,
helping ambitious and motivated young people to achieve their professional goals
through a series of structured meetings.
I really benefited from
communicating with my mentor
during the programme. She was
there to support me at any point
if I needed advice and
encouraged me to develop my
City of London Business Traineeship
(CBT) Programme
The Brokerage has managed the City of London Business Traineeship (CBT)
Programme on behalf of the City of London Corporation for 16 years. The
award-winning programme gives state educated, ambitious and talented young
residents from City-fringe boroughs the chance to undertake paid internships with
City employers.
Internships last between 6 and 13 weeks and are paid at a minimum of London
Living Wage to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have enough
financial stability to support themselves while working.
The programme opens many doors for talented young people who may not
Apprenticeships, school leaver
and internship opportunities
In addition to the City Business Traineeship Programme, we help leading
companies to meet their diversity and recruitment needs by introducing them to a
We prepare our candidates for the world of work so they are able to compete with
Some of the companies we’ve worked with in 2016 include Axis, Aspen and TMF
Group.
Commerzbank has worked with The Brokerage since 2003 to help
source candidates. We use The Brokerage for our vocational training
recruitment to ensure we have a diverse range of educational backgrounds
within the Bank. Opportunities are available to join as a school leaver and
study towards a degree whilst working at the Bank. Since 2003, 70 trainees
have been hired and 34 (49%) of them are still at Commerzbank.”
In 2016 we have been delighted to have our
alumni and ambassador members support us by
speaking at school assemblies, delivering inspiring
masterclasses and providing valuable insights at
conferences and events. They have also been
fantastic fundraisers for us by jumping out of
planes and running for miles to raise money for
the organisation that helped them.
Going full circle
Our Alumni Board act as a steering group for the organisation, to ensure that we
stay in touch with the needs and interests of our alumni and ambassador members
as well as to inform our programmes.
I was invited to join The Brokerage’s alumni board just in time for
their 20th anniversary! It’s fantastic to grow in my career with the charity that
enabled my first opportunity. It’s a great feeling to go from being a CBT
intern, to an employer of CBT interns to joining the alumni board over the
space of several years.”
Our work with businesses
Our work with employers underpins everything we do.
Our programmes wouldn’t have as much of a profound impact
on our young people without volunteers providing that direct
access to the world of work. Volunteers work with the young
people through our workshops, masterclasses, mentoring
programmes and networking events to help them develop their
communication, self-awareness and teamwork skills.
Through sharing their own knowledge and experiences, our
young people are able to break down their perceptions of ‘City
workers’ and understand that the people who work within the
glass towers of London are just like them.
The impact on the business
As well as making a difference to the lives of the young people we serve, our work
also has a positive impact on the businesses and institutions with which we partner.
From rewarding, one-off volunteering opportunities to bespoke talent pipeline
initiatives, all of The Brokerage’s programmes enable companies to support and
develop their teams.
Having to
Corporate case study:
International law firm, Reed Smith have partnered with The Brokerage for the last
four years, providing workshop volunteers for all age groups and mentors for their
bespoke Year 12 mentoring programme. Working with The Brokerage helps them
to achieve their responsible business aims.
Reed Smith are delighted to continue their partnership with The Brokerage
Citylink, assisting primary and secondary school students in their discovery
of all the different career roles within a law firm.
Our volunteers have thoroughly enjoyed the shared experience this year,
which has led to us having to increase the number of workshops across the
year and mentors involved in the mentoring programme as these are such
rewarding programmes.”
Key achievements of 2016
Challenge fundraising
Total raised
£5,509
2016 has seen Brokerage alumni members, friends and supporters dedicating
their time to raising funds for The Brokerage through a series of fundraising
activities and events. These challenges allow Brokerage supporters to achieve
their personal goals, but also give back to a charity which strongly resonates with
them or, for alumni members in particular, supported them into their chosen careers.
The Big Give Christmas Challenge
Total raised
£22,007
The Big Give Christmas Challenge helped us raise funds for our Employability Skills
Advice Service, which helps disadvantaged young Londoners who are seeking advice
or support regarding career opportunities in professional and financial services.
We’re grateful to: Barnett Waddingham, Berwin Leighton Paisner, Clifford
Chance, CFC Underwriting, CMS, Cooley, Fidelis, Markel, Liberty Specialty
Markets, TheCityUK, The EQ Foundation, Tindall Riley, Tokio Marine Kiln and
Sapphire Systems, along with many of our individual supporters who helped us to
successfully unlock all match funds, more than doubling the value of each donation!
Worshipful Company of Insurers
We’ve been delighted to receive support from the Worshipful Company of Insurers
(WCI) which, as well as making a significant and welcome contribution to our core
costs, ensures we can provide a range of additional opportunities for our students.
Thanks to this funding, over 1,300 young people have received additional support
from The Brokeragethis year through:
• The career options programme targeting Year 12s at class assemblies in
predominantly outer London boroughs.
• School-leaver registration and individual career guidance sessions held.
• The annual student summer networking event, held at Insurance Hall, supported
by over 60 representatives from the insurance profession.
