1 | DEFINING MOMENTS | 25 JANUARY TO 25 MARCH 2017
This story begins with a chance meeting at a gallery opening
in Sydney in 1998. It’s a story of creativity, skill-building,
love, family and survival… and a few dogs.
As with all partnerships – be it for love or in business – there are times of happiness and times of struggle. And because Harriet Schwarzrock
and Matthew Curtis were so bold to have combined love and business, their defining moments have become an important story to tell. This
exhibition hopes to acknowledge those moments of success – and of disaster – to demonstrate the pivotal role they have played in the journey
of two artists and their individual and combined impact on the Australian studio glass world.
Matthew Curtis has always been drawn to the complexity and beauty of microscopic organisms, finding parallels within minimalist
architecture. Using large scale blown and cast glass work, his work examines depth and complexity of life at it’s cellular, and with the addition
of steel, Curtis explores the contrast of engineered structures framing the organic.
Similarly, Harriet Schwarzrock’s work is also inspired by biology, and works with blown glass elements and metal fixtures, but instead focusses
on the exploration of balance and interconnectivity, rather than structure. Her sculptural work unfurls, evolves, floats and shifts, capturing a
sense of poise, rhythm and balance.
For almost 20 years these two artists have worked together as inspiration, assistant and sounding board for each other but they rarely
collaborate and have only exhibited together once before now. Defining Moments provides them with not only an opportunity to work
together, but it allows them to freely explore new pieces, new ways of working and to show their process without the pressure of showing only
completed, fully resolved works.
The pieces in this exhibition speak for themselves as beautiful crafted sculptural forms. However, by combining the artists’ story along
with finished pieces, drawings and prototypes, I hope to add a level of awareness around the significant role craft practitioners have in our
community.
