Quigley for an illustrated presentation and book signing of his recently published book Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union. The program will be held in the Benjamin Lecture Hall at the Cushing House, 98 High Street, Newburyport. A reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. with the presentation beginning at 7:00. The program is free and open to the public and is funded, in part, by the Institution for Savings. PURE HEART is the story of a father and son lauded in their day as exceptional American heroes. Their patriotism and principled civility amid fiery partisanship, racial bigotry, and civil war are lessons for our own time. In the summer of 1862, William White Dorr enlisted as a lieutenant in the 121st Pennsylvania Volunteers, a new Union regiment organizing in Philadelphia. Dorr’s regiment took a pivotal stand at Gettysburg and ten months later, as captain, Dorr led his company into the Wilderness, one of the most brutal and bloody campaigns of the war. On the home front, his father, the Reverend Benjamin Dorr, rector of Christ Church, Philadelphia, strived to prevent divisions in his congregation from sundering that Episcopal church historically tied to the nation’s founding. The emotional heart of the story lies in Reverend Dorr’s relationship with his soldier son, poignantly revealed in a recently discovered collection of his son’s letters. Although born in Philadelphia, Captain William White Dorr had strong ancestral ties to Massachusetts, and he and his parents are buried in Salisbury Point Burying Ground in Amesbury. William F. Quigley teaches history at the Governor’s Academy in Byfield, the nation’s oldest non-sectarian independent boarding school. During his 25 years at the Academy, he has served as head of the history department, dean of academics, and dean of faculty / assistant head of school. Bill currently coaches two varsity teams and is founding director of the Academy’s Writing Center. PianoArc is also a Massachusetts North Shore success story. The keyboard, which now weighs less than 200 pounds and can be assembled in an hour by one person, is built in Essex by Atlantic International Models with the help of Lightspeed Manufacturing in Haverhill and Merrimack Tool Co. in Amesbury. Johnson is shy about discussing the price tag for one of his circular keyboards, which he describes as the “Ferrari of keyboards.” The Brock360 looks like something out of science fiction. A wide red stripe encircles the 288 black-and-white wood keys, surrounded by green, yellow, red and blue LED lights. For the Super Bowl, the team used only white lights to make the keyboard stand out in the dark. Traditional keyboards have fewer keys, a maximum of 88. Humans can hear 120 different notes, Johnson said. So musicians use several keyboards to produce different sounds at the same time. PianoArc’s instrument is like having three keyboards in one. And Johnson believes the evolution of the Brockett360 is only beginning. “We have not explored fully its potential,” he said. Johnson has been building, as well as playing, keyboards since he was 13, but he credits Parsons with the idea of a circular keyboard. Friends since he played trumpet in Johnson’s band at Bucknell, Parsons was playing keyboard for Lady Gaga, when he approached Johnson about creating a keyboard that would give him greater stage presence. Guitarists, vocalists and drummers exude presence on stage, Johnson said, but keyboardists “look like data entry professionals.” The team decided to try to build a keyboard that gave greater presence and new capabilities for a showman like Parsons. It took four months, but the team built it just in time to load the mammoth instrument onto a truck headed for Korea. At that time, Johnson, who had a strong background in retail, wholesale and software, was not thinking about building exotic keyboards as a business. After receiving great reactions to the keyboard from crowds in 30 countries during Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” tour in 2012 and “ArtPop” tour a year later, Johnson knew he had a winning product. But it needed work. So during breaks in the tours, Parsons, chief technical officer Starkey and Johnson began improving the instrument. PianoArc debuted its latest model at the National Association of Music Merchants conference. “Wow! Four days at the NAMM show in Anaheim has given us a sense of the possibilities for this concept,” Johnson wrote at the time. “Thank you to everyone who stopped by, played, discussed, and shared with us their visions for this new generation of keyboard products. We’re already back at work planning the next phase of production.” As the keyboard evolved, the accolades showered down on it. Superstar musicians, including David Rosenthal, Billy Joel’s music director and renowned keyboard programmer, stopped by the NAMM convention to give the PianoArc a whirl. They also wanted to jettison the name Chestnut, for the street the buildings were on, because it carried no meaning. “Chestnut is not a well known street even in Amesbury,” Friery said. They also wanted to drop the word, center, from the name because “it sounds too academic,” he said. They replaced it with the word, Works, to emphasize their mission of creating jobs, particularly manufacturing jobs. The success CI Works is enjoying in Amesbury has caught the attention of the state Executive Office for the Department of Housing and Economic Development. The agency has asked O’Brien and Friery and provided a $25,000 grant to expand its operations to other Massachusetts towns and cities. CI Works plans to open a second facility in the large, now vacant Cape Cod Times newspaper building in Barnstable. In the future, it hopes to expand to Lawrence. Both Barnstable, the Cape’s largest community, and Lawrence are designated Patterns by the & Accessories state as Gateway Cities, which qualifies them for additional state grants and financial aid. In Barnstable, CI Works plans to focus on the blue economy, industries and businesses that thrive on bring close to the ocean. Like other vacation locales, including Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, Barnstable is losing year-round residents because many of its jobs are seasonal. One of CI Works’ first tenants at the Barnstable facility will be Cape Built, a vacation home developer, which is designing cottages that exceed the standards set by the Federal Emergency Management Administration for hurricanes and rising tides by 20 years. Friery said he expects the new facility will attract companies initially that are suppliers to Cape Built.
