I got up at seven, made coffee, added nuts and berries to my yogurt and checked the computer. There is something comforting about a routine in the morning that helps start the day. I have had the same ordinary routine for so long, I could navigate mornings with my eyes closed. But life didn’t allow our ordinary day to continue after the phone rang. The surgeon’s office called with news how the next few days would be most unordinary. “It Occurs to Me” sometimes life throws a curve. The long-awaited surgery was scheduled for nine o’clock the next morning. At that moment, everything ordinary, changed. Even though both of us had been in a hospital before, anxiety still crept in leaving us exceptionally quiet on the ride into the city. We had booked a hotel room close to the hospital but neither of us slept well. We were lost in thoughts filled with fear, panic and a lack of control. The only things we were sure of was the next few days would feel like stepping into uncharted territory. It is normal to be nervous before surgery but it is often difficult to calm down. So many questions popped in my head about how I would be able to help my partner get through this. And I imagine he was thinking how he would get through this too. But after a short ride from the hotel we pulled up to the gate, pushed the button and pulled the parking pass out of the slot. The hospital sat up on a hill like an threatening fortress built long ago. We fell into step up the ramp and stood together at the automatic doors. Once inside we rolled the suitcase toward the elevator while keeping an eye on the new environment we would become familiar with for the next few days. There would be nurses giving instructions, doctors doing surgery, intravenous IVs, vital signs and medications. And of course, plenty of time to wait. The surgery went well and within four to five hours my partner was safely tucked in his bed in his room. He looked a little pale and spoke with a groggy drugged voice but it was clear by the medical attention given, he was in good hands. I stayed with him for a few more hours before heading home to tend to Sadie, the Border collie, and warm up the house by stoking the woodstove. For the next few days I traveled back and forth to the city to visit and watch the excellent medical staff work their magic. Once my partner was released we made a stop at the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions and then headed home. Things at home were ready for the next phase after surgery. The hospital bed, walker, pillows and blankets were a welcome sight and my partner carefully climbed into bed and closed his eyes. I think the lead up to surgery created a lot of apprehension and anxiety. But neither of us were really prepared for the weeks of recovery at home that we faced.
