The term spin ayarn –tell astory –isnautical<br />
in origin with allusion to ropeand its constituent,<br />
yarn, which was traditionally hand twisted ona<br />
single spindle prior to an invention by an English<br />
weaver named James Hargreaves. Dubbed the<br />
‘Spinning Jenny’, his novel device, using eight<br />
upright spindles in contrast to the horizontal reel,<br />
was conceived (c.1764) shortly after he noticed<br />
aspinning wheel that had been inadvertently<br />
toppled by his young daughter named Jenny.<br />
