HC receives death
reference in Kunio
murder case

The death reference and documents
in Japanese citizen Hoshi
Kunio murder case has been sent
to the High Court.
The documents were received
at the section concerned of the
High Court around 10am Tuesday,
Aminur Rahman, reader to the
Rangpur Special Judge’s Court,
confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune.
On February 28, Rangpur Special
Judge Naresh Chandra Sarker
sentenced to death five members
of a new faction of Jama’atul Mujahideen
Bangladesh (JMB), within
60 working days of the trial proceedings.
The convicts are New JMB’s regional
commander Masud Rana,
military commander Eshak Ali,
Liton Mia, Ahsan Ullah Ansari Biplob
and Shakhawat Hossain. Biplob is on
the run while another accused Abu
Sayeed was found not guilty. The trial
began on November 15, 2016.
Special public prosecutor Rathish
Chandra Bhowmik, who
stood for the state in the trial, said
that they had urged the authorities
for speedy arrangement of the
death reference hearing.
Rangpur court sources added
that the four arrested convicts had
collected their copies of the trial
court verdict.
Defence lawyer Abul Hossain
said that his clients would file petitions
with the High Court against
the death penalty.
Kunio was gunned down in
Rangpur on October 3, 2015, barely
a week after the identical killing of
an Italian man in the capital’s Gulshan
area. •

Muggers
snatch Tk1.60
crore in Savar

Unidentified muggers snatched
Tk1.60 crore from the employees
of a garment factory in Savar while
the latter were transporting the
money yesterday.
Confirming the incident, RAB 4
Company Commander Maj Abdul
Hakim said that the employees of
Oboni Group were transporting
Tk1.60 crore in a microbus to another
factory of the group in the
afternoon.
As the microbus reached near
Nazim Nagar area, some miscreants
swooped on the vehicle, fired
blank shots and snatched away the
money.
Later, RAB and police officials
visited the spot. The money could
not be recovered until last night.
When contacted, the factory
authorities refused to comment on
the matter. •
JMB member gets
life in arms case

A member of banned militant outfit
JMB in Chapainawabganj was
given life-term rigorous imprisonment
yesterday in a case filed in
2009 for possessing illegal arms.
Convict Md Selim alias Harun
Mistri, 33, is the son of Md Durul
Huda from Johorpur Bokripara under
Narayanpur in Chapainawabganj.
Judge Md Ziaur Rahman of the
Special Tribunal 2, also an additional
district and sessions judge,
delivered the verdict in presence of
the convict.
Thirteen prosecution witnesses
gave statements in the case.
An active member of old JMB,
Selim was arrested during a drive
by a team of RAB 5 from Johurpur
Belpara village of Narayanpur on
July 7, 2009.
Based on his information, a pistol
and nine rounds of bullets were
recovered from the house of his
father-in-law Kamruzzaman of Johorpur
Bokripara. Later RAB filed
a case against him under section 19
(Ka) of the Arms Act with Chapainawabganj
sadar police.
Nababganj police Sub-Inspector
Md Shahin Akanda pressed charges
against him on August 6 the same
year. •
