Throughout the academic year, <strong>River</strong> <strong>East</strong> Collegiate assists students with information regarding awards,<br />

bursaries <strong>and</strong> scholarships that have been donated by corporations, community organizations <strong>and</strong><br />

individuals. These awards cover the specific request of the donors <strong>and</strong> are intended to assist students who<br />

have shown outst<strong>and</strong>ing abilities in academic or vocational areas <strong>and</strong>/or in need of financial assistance.<br />

As scholarship opportunities become available throughout the year you will need to regularly check the<br />

student announcement folder on your desktop or drop by the guidance office <strong>and</strong> browse the scholarship<br />

Definition of Terms<br />

An Award usually involves multiple criteria such as academic achievement, demonstrated<br />

financial need, <strong>and</strong> school or community involvement<br />

A Bursary is usually given to a recipient based on demonstrated financial need <strong>and</strong><br />

satisfactory academic progress<br />

A Scholarship is given to a recipient primarily based on academic achievement<br />

Entrance <strong>Awards</strong> may require an application <strong>and</strong> may be awarded to recipients prior to their<br />

Alpha Omega Women’s Alumnae<br />

<strong>Bursaries</strong> valued at $500 each are available to women of Ukrainian heritage who are entering full-time<br />

first year studies at a Manitoba university. Visit their website at<br />

Alpha Phi International Women’s Fraternity Alumnae<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $300 are available to young women that have demonstrated a high level of<br />

academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school <strong>and</strong> community <strong>and</strong> plan on<br />

attending University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg. Deadline for applications is May 30th.<br />

Business Council of Manitoba Aboriginal Education <strong>Awards</strong><br />

<strong>Awards</strong> of up to $3,000 for university <strong>and</strong> up to $1,500 for college are available to persons of Aboriginal<br />

ancestry who are Canadian citizens <strong>and</strong> Manitoban residents who are presently enrolled or planning to<br />

enroll in a Manitoba public post-secondary institution in any program. You must maintain full-time<br />

status (60% or more course load) <strong>and</strong> be in need of financial assistance. Visit their website at<br />

Carpathia Credit Union Scholarship<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> of $1,000-$1,500 to graduating students with a high academic st<strong>and</strong>ing, have participated in<br />

extracurricular activities at school, within the Ukrainian community, <strong>and</strong> the community-at-large. Any<br />

students that will be graduating in June, are members of the Carpathia Credit Union <strong>and</strong> are planning on<br />

attending an approved post-secondary institution in the 2009 fall are invited to apply. Applications are<br />

CBC Radio-Canada<br />

The CBC Diversity Manitoba scholarships valued at $500 each are available to students interested in<br />

entering the field of journalism <strong>and</strong>/or the production of radio, television <strong>and</strong> websites. Applicants must<br />

be in their final year of high school, present a minimum of 70%, live in Manitoba at the time of<br />

application <strong>and</strong> hold a Canadian citizenship or residency. All applicants must come from an ethnic or<br />

ancestral background that is a visible minor or Aboriginal. Deadline for applications is May 30 th .


Elijah Harper Scholarship <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Hill Memorial Award<br />

The board of directors of Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Foundations Inc. /Children’s Legacy Fund presents the<br />

above scholarship <strong>and</strong> award. All applications must include a written report as to why the student should<br />

receive this scholarship/award, along with a transcript of marks. Deadline for applications is June 13 th .<br />

Geoff <strong>and</strong> Regan Archambault Scholarship<br />

Geoff <strong>and</strong> Regan from Century 21 Advanced Realty have created a scholarship in the amount of $500 to<br />

be awarded to a student from each of the following schools; Miles Mac, Kildonan <strong>East</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>East</strong>.<br />

The purpose of these scholarships would be to reward students who “give back” to their community or<br />

aboard in a charitable way. Deadline for applications are May 22 nd .<br />

Gilroy/Acheson/Cooper Scholarship<br />

Voices: Manitoba’s Youth in Care Network <strong>and</strong> Winnipeg’s Child <strong>and</strong> Family Services is offering the<br />

Gilroy/Acheson/Cooper scholarship. To be eligible, students must be currently or formerly in the care of<br />

Child <strong>and</strong> Family Services. Deadline for the scholarship application is May 9 th .<br />

Ken Dryden <strong>Scholarships</strong><br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $3,000 <strong>and</strong> administered by National Youth in Care Network are awarded to<br />

young people, currently <strong>and</strong> formerly in the care of the Canadian child welfare system <strong>and</strong> who<br />

Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited Entrance <strong>Awards</strong><br />

<strong>Awards</strong> valued at $5,000 per year (renewable up to three years) are available to students registered for<br />

full-time study in University 1 at the University of Manitoba <strong>and</strong> have a demonstrated financial need.<br />

Deadline for applications is July 15 th .<br />

Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship for Colleges<br />

These entrance awards were established to recognize <strong>and</strong> award outst<strong>and</strong>ing college-bound students who<br />

are passionate about his or her field of study, caring about his or her family, neighborhood <strong>and</strong><br />

community <strong>and</strong> be truly interested in becoming involved <strong>and</strong> making a difference in society. Visit their<br />

Kin Canada <strong>Bursaries</strong><br />

Hal Rogers Endowment Fund’s bursaries valued at $ 1,000 was established to promote, encourage <strong>and</strong><br />

sponsor educational programs <strong>and</strong> activities, by providing assistance to applicants in their quest for higher<br />

learning at a recognized post-secondary institution. To be eligible, students must be a Canadian citizen or<br />

l<strong>and</strong>ed immigrant, plan to register as a full-time student at a recognized post-secondary institute <strong>and</strong><br />

demonstrate high ideals <strong>and</strong> qualities of citizenship. Applications are available in the guidance office or<br />

Jean Murray-Moray Sinclair <strong>Scholarships</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Naomi Levin Theatre Scholarship<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> are available to young Manitobans aspiring to a career in professional theatre. Visit the<br />

Jimmy King Memorial Scholarship Trust<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> are available to young musicians who seek to develop their musical talents in the jazz field<br />

through education. Students must be Canadian citizens <strong>and</strong> have lived in Manitoba for a minimum of 12<br />

months <strong>and</strong> not be less than 15 years of age. Deadline for applications is February 28 th .


Job Yellowhead Memorial Scholarship<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> are available to Aboriginal, Métis <strong>and</strong> Inuit youth who are planning on attending university.<br />

The scholarship will provide financial support for up to five years of continuous study in the following<br />

areas: liberal arts, journalism, law, medicine, native studies, philosophy, science, religious studies <strong>and</strong><br />

business administration. Applicants should either be completing or have recently completed high school.<br />

Leaders of Tomorrow<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $5,000 each are available to students attending University of Manitoba who<br />

The Loran <strong>Awards</strong><br />

These awards are available to well-rounded students who demonstrate character, promise of leadership<br />

<strong>and</strong> strong commitment to service in the community. Students must be in their graduating year of<br />

uninterrupted full-time studies in high school, present a minimum average of 85% <strong>and</strong> hold Canadian<br />

MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving) Canada <strong>Bursaries</strong><br />

<strong>Bursaries</strong> are valued at $2,000 are available to Canadian students who have had a parent or guardian<br />

killed in an impaired-driving related crash. The student should be planning on attending a post-secondary<br />

Mark & Dorothy Danzker <strong>Scholarships</strong> of Excellence<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> are valued at $1,000 each <strong>and</strong> are presented by The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg for the preservation of cultural heritage. To be eligible, students must be<br />

accepted or be currently enrolled in a university, college or other recognized post-secondary institution<br />

within Canada, must be between the ages of 17 <strong>and</strong> 25 <strong>and</strong> must be a resident of Manitoba for at least<br />

Manitoba Blue Cross<br />

Manitoba Blue Cross established its scholarship/bursary program to provide financial aid <strong>and</strong> assistance<br />

to qualifying senior level high school students. <strong>Awards</strong> are in the amount of $750 <strong>and</strong> are available to<br />

students in the following categories: Special Needs, Entrance <strong>Awards</strong>, Traveller’s Bursary, Dental<br />

Scholarship <strong>and</strong> Medical Rehabilitation Scholarship. Deadlines <strong>and</strong> process for applications vary from<br />

Manitoba Cattle Producers<br />

<strong>Bursaries</strong> valued at $500 are available to children of Manitoba Cattle Producers Association members that<br />

Manitoba Community Newspapers Association<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $750 are available to Grade 12 students who are interested in pursuing a career in<br />

journalism. Deadline for applications is April 18 th .


Manitoba Forage Seed Association (MFSA) Scholarship<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> valued at $500 are available to students who are members or have parents that are members of<br />

MFSA or have a special interest in forage seed production <strong>and</strong> are enrolled or planning to enroll in<br />

Faculty of Agricultural <strong>and</strong> Food Services at the University of Manitoba. Deadline for applications is<br />

October 1 st .<br />

The Manitoba Foundation for Sports<br />

This scholarship program administered by Sport Manitoba was established to support young athletes of<br />

Sport Manitoba partners, who wish to continue to participate in amateur sport while pursuing a postsecondary<br />

education on a full-time basis. Preference will be given to athletes attending university or<br />

college in Manitoba <strong>and</strong> enrolled in a sport related field. Visit their website at<br />

Manitoba <strong>and</strong> Northwestern Ontario Comm<strong>and</strong> of The Royal Canadian Legion<br />

These bursaries are offered to students who can demonstrate need of assistance <strong>and</strong> plan on attending a<br />

post secondary institution. To qualify for a bursary, a student must be a son, daughter, or gr<strong>and</strong>child of an<br />

ex-service member or a deceased ex-service member. Applications are available in the guidance office or<br />

Manitoba Youth Leadership Scholarship<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> are valid at $500 <strong>and</strong> recognizes Grade 12 students who have engaged in meaningful<br />

leadership <strong>and</strong> citizenship volunteer activities over the previous year that were targeted at promoting<br />

Millennium Excellence Award Program Entrance <strong>Awards</strong><br />

Monsanto Canada Opportunity Scholarship<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $1,500 provide deserving high school students across the country who are entering<br />

agricultural or forestry family farming operation <strong>and</strong> must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership<br />

National Youth in Care Network<br />

Each year Ken Dryden <strong>Scholarships</strong> are awarded to young people, currently or formerly in the care of the<br />

Canadian child welfare system, who demonstrate great achievement <strong>and</strong> promise. Each scholarship<br />

covers up to $3,000 or 80% of the cost of tuition <strong>and</strong> fees, whichever is less, <strong>and</strong> is renewable annually.<br />

applications is the first Friday in March.<br />

North Winnipeg Credit Union Scholarship<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $1,000 are available to students who are members of the North Winnipeg Credit<br />

Union on the day the selection committee reviews <strong>and</strong> selects the successful applicants. Criteria for the<br />

scholarship are the student’s academic achievements, participation in extra curricular activities as well as<br />

Order of Sons of Italy<br />

Lupa Di Rom Lodge <strong>and</strong> Garibaldi Lodge of Manitoba is offering the scholarships valued at $500 to<br />

students of Italian background, entering a post-secondary institution <strong>and</strong> involved in the community,<br />

especially in the Italian community of Manitoba. Deadline for applications is August 8 th .<br />

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship for Prospective Teachers<br />

Phi Delta Kappa, Keystone Province – Winnipeg Chapter is offering this scholarship valued at $300 <strong>and</strong><br />

Peter Chrypko Memorial Award<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> valued at $100 is available to students (or former students) of the English Ukrainian Bilingual<br />

Program. Selection is based on successful completion of the highest level of the English Ukrainian<br />

Bilingual Program offered in their school division, as well as the completion of a grade 12 credit in<br />

Ukrainian language obtained through a special language credit examination, a correspondence course or<br />

summer program. The above criteria is also combined with the c<strong>and</strong>idates overall academic achievement,<br />

Pursue Your Calling Scholarship<br />

MTS Allstream Inc. presents this scholarship valued at $1,000 <strong>and</strong> is designed to encourage students to<br />

“Quest for Excellence” <strong>School</strong> Bursary Program<br />

Re/Max is offering this bursary valued at $500 to graduating high school students. Students are required<br />

The six subjects students can choose from are: Leadership, Sports, Technology & Trades, Performing<br />

TD Canada Trust <strong>Scholarships</strong> for Community Leadership<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $10,000 per tuition year, $5,000 a year toward living expenses <strong>and</strong> the offer of<br />

summer employment at TD Canada Trust is available to graduating high school students who have made<br />

a difference in their communities. The key criterion is outst<strong>and</strong>ing community leadership, in balance with<br />

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship<br />

Toyota Canada Inc. <strong>and</strong> Earth Day Canada are proud to recognize <strong>and</strong> celebrate the outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

environmental contributions that youth in Canada are making in their communities. Graduating high<br />

school students have the opportunity to earn a $5,000 entrance scholarship towards their post-secondary<br />

Training for Tomorrow Education <strong>Awards</strong> Program<br />

These entry-level education educational awards valued at $1,250 are designed to encourage women to<br />

United Way of Winnipeg’s Youth Relations Council introduced the Youth Leaders in Action Scholarship<br />

Variety Leadership in the Community Scholarship<br />

This scholarship valued at $2,000 is available to a young Manitoban who plans on pursuing a post<br />

secondary education at a Canadian university or college. Preference will be given to applicants who have<br />

demonstrated a sincere leadership in caring for others. Deadline for applications is April 23 rd .<br />

Variety Pat Riordan Fine Arts Scholarship<br />

This scholarship valued at $1,000 will be awarded to a deserving high school student who is pursuing an<br />

education in either music or fine arts at a college or university in Manitoba. Information regarding the<br />

Wendy’s Classic Achiever Scholarship<br />

<strong>Scholarships</strong> valued at $5,000 each is focused on rewarding <strong>and</strong> acknowledging students who have<br />

Royal Bank of Canada is offering this scholarship valued at $2,000 to graduating high school students<br />

who are new to Canada. They want to hear how you think immigration has helped shaped the country we<br />
