Awards, Bursaries and Scholarships
Throughout the academic year, River East Collegiate assists students with information regarding awards,
bursaries and scholarships that have been donated by corporations, community organizations and
individuals. These awards cover the specific request of the donors and are intended to assist students who
have shown outstanding abilities in academic or vocational areas and/or in need of financial assistance.
As scholarship opportunities become available throughout the year you will need to regularly check the
student announcement folder on your desktop or drop by the guidance office and browse the scholarship

Definition of Terms
An Award usually involves multiple criteria such as academic achievement, demonstrated
financial need, and school or community involvement
A Bursary is usually given to a recipient based on demonstrated financial need and
satisfactory academic progress
A Scholarship is given to a recipient primarily based on academic achievement
Entrance Awards may require an application and may be awarded to recipients prior to their
starting a program

Alpha Omega Women’s Alumnae
Bursaries valued at $500 each are available to women of Ukrainian heritage who are entering full-time
first year studies at a Manitoba university. Visit their website at

Alpha Phi International Women’s Fraternity Alumnae
Scholarships valued at $300 are available to young women that have demonstrated a high level of
academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school and community and plan on
attending University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg. Deadline for applications is May 30th.
Business Council of Manitoba Aboriginal Education Awards
Awards of up to $3,000 for university and up to $1,500 for college are available to persons of Aboriginal
ancestry who are Canadian citizens and Manitoban residents who are presently enrolled or planning to
enroll in a Manitoba public post-secondary institution in any program. You must maintain full-time
status (60% or more course load) and be in need of financial assistance. Visit their website at

Carpathia Credit Union Scholarship
Awards of $1,000-$1,500 to graduating students with a high academic standing, have participated in
extracurricular activities at school, within the Ukrainian community, and the community-at-large. Any
students that will be graduating in June, are members of the Carpathia Credit Union and are planning on
attending an approved post-secondary institution in the 2009 fall are invited to apply. Applications are

CBC Radio-Canada
The CBC Diversity Manitoba scholarships valued at $500 each are available to students interested in
entering the field of journalism and/or the production of radio, television and websites. Applicants must
be in their final year of high school, present a minimum of 70%, live in Manitoba at the time of
application and hold a Canadian citizenship or residency. All applicants must come from an ethnic or
ancestral background that is a visible minor or Aboriginal. Deadline for applications is May 30 th .

Elijah Harper Scholarship and Elizabeth Hill Memorial Award
The board of directors of Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Foundations Inc. /Children’s Legacy Fund presents the
above scholarship and award. All applications must include a written report as to why the student should
receive this scholarship/award, along with a transcript of marks. Deadline for applications is June 13 th .
Geoff and Regan Archambault Scholarship
Geoff and Regan from Century 21 Advanced Realty have created a scholarship in the amount of $500 to
be awarded to a student from each of the following schools; Miles Mac, Kildonan East and River East.
The purpose of these scholarships would be to reward students who “give back” to their community or
aboard in a charitable way. Deadline for applications are May 22 nd .
Gilroy/Acheson/Cooper Scholarship
Voices: Manitoba’s Youth in Care Network and Winnipeg’s Child and Family Services is offering the
Gilroy/Acheson/Cooper scholarship. To be eligible, students must be currently or formerly in the care of
Child and Family Services. Deadline for the scholarship application is May 9 th .
Ken Dryden Scholarships
Scholarships valued at $3,000 and administered by National Youth in Care Network are awarded to
young people, currently and formerly in the care of the Canadian child welfare system and who

Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited Entrance Awards
Awards valued at $5,000 per year (renewable up to three years) are available to students registered for
full-time study in University 1 at the University of Manitoba and have a demonstrated financial need.
Deadline for applications is July 15 th .
Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship for Colleges
These entrance awards were established to recognize and award outstanding college-bound students who
are passionate about his or her field of study, caring about his or her family, neighborhood and
community and be truly interested in becoming involved and making a difference in society. Visit their

Kin Canada Bursaries
Hal Rogers Endowment Fund’s bursaries valued at $ 1,000 was established to promote, encourage and
sponsor educational programs and activities, by providing assistance to applicants in their quest for higher
learning at a recognized post-secondary institution. To be eligible, students must be a Canadian citizen or
landed immigrant, plan to register as a full-time student at a recognized post-secondary institute and
demonstrate high ideals and qualities of citizenship. Applications are available in the guidance office or

Deadline for applications is February 1 st .
Jean Murray-Moray Sinclair Scholarships and the Naomi Levin Theatre Scholarship
Scholarships are available to young Manitobans aspiring to a career in professional theatre. Visit the
Manitoba Theatre Centre’s website at www.mtc.mb.ca for more information about these two scholarships.
Deadline for applications is May 10 th .
Jimmy King Memorial Scholarship Trust
Scholarships are available to young musicians who seek to develop their musical talents in the jazz field
through education. Students must be Canadian citizens and have lived in Manitoba for a minimum of 12
months and not be less than 15 years of age. Deadline for applications is February 28 th .

Job Yellowhead Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships are available to Aboriginal, Métis and Inuit youth who are planning on attending university.
The scholarship will provide financial support for up to five years of continuous study in the following
areas: liberal arts, journalism, law, medicine, native studies, philosophy, science, religious studies and
business administration. Applicants should either be completing or have recently completed high school.

Jon Sigurdsson Chapter Iode
Scholarships are available to students pursuing a post-secondary education in various areas such as music,
nursing, medicine, agriculture and more. Deadline for applications is October 1 st .
Leaders of Tomorrow
Scholarships valued at $5,000 each are available to students attending University of Manitoba who
combine outstanding leadership potential with academic giftedness. Visit their website at

The Loran Awards
These awards are available to well-rounded students who demonstrate character, promise of leadership
and strong commitment to service in the community. Students must be in their graduating year of
uninterrupted full-time studies in high school, present a minimum average of 85% and hold Canadian

MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving) Canada Bursaries
Bursaries are valued at $2,000 are available to Canadian students who have had a parent or guardian
killed in an impaired-driving related crash. The student should be planning on attending a post-secondary

Mark & Dorothy Danzker Scholarships of Excellence
Scholarships are valued at $1,000 each and are presented by The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and the
Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg for the preservation of cultural heritage. To be eligible, students must be
accepted or be currently enrolled in a university, college or other recognized post-secondary institution
within Canada, must be between the ages of 17 and 25 and must be a resident of Manitoba for at least

Manitoba Blue Cross
Manitoba Blue Cross established its scholarship/bursary program to provide financial aid and assistance
to qualifying senior level high school students. Awards are in the amount of $750 and are available to
students in the following categories: Special Needs, Entrance Awards, Traveller’s Bursary, Dental
Scholarship and Medical Rehabilitation Scholarship. Deadlines and process for applications vary from
one institution to another, so students should contact the Awards Office or Registrar’s Office of the

Manitoba Cattle Producers
Bursaries valued at $500 are available to children of Manitoba Cattle Producers Association members that
plan on attending a post-secondary institute. Deadline for applications is June 1 st .
Manitoba Community Newspapers Association
Scholarships valued at $750 are available to Grade 12 students who are interested in pursuing a career in
journalism. Deadline for applications is April 18 th .

Manitoba Forage Seed Association (MFSA) Scholarship
Awards valued at $500 are available to students who are members or have parents that are members of
MFSA or have a special interest in forage seed production and are enrolled or planning to enroll in
Faculty of Agricultural and Food Services at the University of Manitoba. Deadline for applications is
October 1 st .
The Manitoba Foundation for Sports
This scholarship program administered by Sport Manitoba was established to support young athletes of
Sport Manitoba partners, who wish to continue to participate in amateur sport while pursuing a postsecondary
education on a full-time basis. Preference will be given to athletes attending university or
college in Manitoba and enrolled in a sport related field. Visit their website at

Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Command of The Royal Canadian Legion
These bursaries are offered to students who can demonstrate need of assistance and plan on attending a
post secondary institution. To qualify for a bursary, a student must be a son, daughter, or grandchild of an
ex-service member or a deceased ex-service member. Applications are available in the guidance office or

Manitoba Youth Leadership Scholarship
Scholarships are valid at $500 and recognizes Grade 12 students who have engaged in meaningful
leadership and citizenship volunteer activities over the previous year that were targeted at promoting

Millennium Excellence Award Program Entrance Awards
These awards valued from $4,000-$20,000 recognizes students who make positive and significant
contributions to the betterment of their communities, demonstrate a capacity for creative leadership and
commit themselves to the pursuit of innovation and academic excellence. Visit their website at

Monsanto Canada Opportunity Scholarship
Scholarships valued at $1,500 provide deserving high school students across the country who are entering
their first year of post-secondary education in agriculture or forestry. Students must be from an
agricultural or forestry family farming operation and must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership

National Youth in Care Network
Each year Ken Dryden Scholarships are awarded to young people, currently or formerly in the care of the
Canadian child welfare system, who demonstrate great achievement and promise. Each scholarship
covers up to $3,000 or 80% of the cost of tuition and fees, whichever is less, and is renewable annually.
Applications are available in the guidance office or on-line at www.youthincare.ca. Deadline for
applications is the first Friday in March.
North Winnipeg Credit Union Scholarship
Scholarships valued at $1,000 are available to students who are members of the North Winnipeg Credit
Union on the day the selection committee reviews and selects the successful applicants. Criteria for the
scholarship are the student’s academic achievements, participation in extra curricular activities as well as
involvement in the Ukrainian community. Applications are available online at www.nwcu.mb.ca .

Order of Sons of Italy
Lupa Di Rom Lodge and Garibaldi Lodge of Manitoba is offering the scholarships valued at $500 to
students of Italian background, entering a post-secondary institution and involved in the community,
especially in the Italian community of Manitoba. Deadline for applications is August 8 th .
Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship for Prospective Teachers
Phi Delta Kappa, Keystone Province – Winnipeg Chapter is offering this scholarship valued at $300 and
available to graduating students interested in pursuing a career in education. Deadline for applications is
May 15 th .
Peter Chrypko Memorial Award
Awards valued at $100 is available to students (or former students) of the English Ukrainian Bilingual
Program. Selection is based on successful completion of the highest level of the English Ukrainian
Bilingual Program offered in their school division, as well as the completion of a grade 12 credit in
Ukrainian language obtained through a special language credit examination, a correspondence course or
summer program. The above criteria is also combined with the candidates overall academic achievement,
Ukrainian community involvement and future education pursuits. Deadline for applications is June 6 th .
Pursue Your Calling Scholarship
MTS Allstream Inc. presents this scholarship valued at $1,000 and is designed to encourage students to
study in areas of high demand for the telecommunications industry. They are available to grade 12
graduates and/or mature students entering their first year of full-time study in one of the eligible

“Quest for Excellence” School Bursary Program
Re/Max is offering this bursary valued at $500 to graduating high school students. Students are required
to enter an essay (not to exceed 1250 words) based on their interest and passion for a selected subject.
The six subjects students can choose from are: Leadership, Sports, Technology & Trades, Performing

Scholarship is valued at $500 and is available to students who are planning on continuing their education

Red River Exhibition Foundation
Red River Exhibition Foundation has created nine scholarships to assist individuals pursuing careers in
the tourism, agriculture and agri-food, automotive and business industry. The Tourism scholarship is

TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership
Scholarships valued at $10,000 per tuition year, $5,000 a year toward living expenses and the offer of

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship

United Way Youth Leaders in Action Scholarship
United Way of Winnipeg’s Youth Relations Council introduced the Youth Leaders in Action Scholarship

the following criteria: academic potential, demonstrated leadership, community involvement and a

University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences is offering the Agricultural and
Food Sciences Centennial Entrance Scholarship valued at $2,000 each. Scholarships will be awarded to

University of Santo Tomas Alumni Association of Manitoba Inc. is offering USTAAM Scholarship

Variety Leadership in the Community Scholarship
This scholarship valued at $2,000 is available to a young Manitoban who plans on pursuing a post
secondary education at a Canadian university or college. Preference will be given to applicants who have

Variety Pat Riordan Fine Arts Scholarship
This scholarship valued at $1,000 will be awarded to a deserving high school student who is pursuing an
education in either music or fine arts at a college or university in Manitoba. Information regarding the

Wendy’s Classic Achiever Scholarship
Scholarships valued at $5,000 each is focused on rewarding and acknowledging students who have
demonstrated excellence in academics, as well as a commitment to extra-curricular activities and

Scholarships valued at $750 is available to students who plan on attending a post secondary institution,

Royal Bank of Canada is offering this scholarship valued at $2,000 to graduating high school students
who are new to Canada. They want to hear how you think immigration has helped shaped the country we
live in today. They would also like you to share your personal story and offer suggestions to help future
