The referendum, set for the April 4 ballot, requests $36.3 million from taxpayers to aid the Maple construction. For each homeowner, this translates to approximately $47.55 per $1,000 of property taxes paid for up to 20 years. Offers Expire April 15, 2017 Benjamin Schlechter, M.D., F.A.C.S. North Shore Aesthetics The remaining $5.2 million needed for construction will be sourced from the D30 fund balance. If the ballot does not pass, the District will likely address Maple’s needs through $15 million in health and life safety maintenance to the current structure, with funding obtained from $5.2 million from the D30 fund balance, $10.7 million in debt service bonds and $20 per every $1,000 of property taxes paid per household. D30 officials have stressed that the latter option would be more costly to the community because the building will need approximately $10 million in maintenance over the next 30 years. A new middle school, on the other hand, would reduce the need for major capital outlay for an estimated 30 years. D30 parent and referendum campaign committee member Pat Dunbar echoed the inefficiency of repairing the current Maple School. “I am very proud that you made the decision to move forward on the referendum because that’s something that this district truly needs to address and needs to address now,” Dunbar said. “Kicking the can down the road, waiting to make the decision later, is going to make it more difficult, more costly, and it’s going to cheat the kids in our district that deserve the quality of education that our community expects and they should have. ... I think it’s an incredible investment in our community and our kids, and what better way to cast a vote and pay tax dollars for something that’s right in our backyard.” “I feel like as a community we’re really on the cusp of something special and I’m excited to be a part of it,” D30 parent Joanna Kaplan added. “I just hope the community listens to the board’s recommendation: that they go out in support of this on April 4.” No one spoke against the referendum during the meeting. Although the focus has been on Maple, Wescott and Willowbrook schools haven’t been forgotten by the board. Board members recently approved two projects for Wescott and Willowbrook: $66,300 in exterior tuck-pointing at Wescott and $229,785 in door replacements at both schools. Furthermore, $878,080 worth of health and life safety updates to Wescott and Willowbrook will be executed in the coming years as part of the District’s Master Facility Plan. Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley — amid the proposed mass spending throughout D30 — assured board and community members that there are not any other large-scale projects within the district planned in the short or long term.
