Letters to the Editor
Brickman endorses trustees
for Glenview Village Board
As the daughter of a life
member of the Glenview
Fire Department, I am second
to none in my admiration
and respect for firefighters.
However, I have
concerns about the upcoming
Village of Glenview
elections.
One candidate for trustee
is an active firefighter
for the Village. By all accounts,
he is a fine person
and I am grateful for his
service to our community,
but I question his ability to
perform the duties of the
job he seeks because of the
conflicts of interest he will
face. Although the state
legislature carved out a
special exception to the law
allowing firefighters but no
other municipal employees
to run for elected office in
the towns in which they
serve, those candidates face
serious problems fulfilling
the duties of the offices
they seek.
When trustees vote on financial
issues, they are dealing
with finite resources. If
those dollars are spent in
one area, they’re not available
for another use. Therefore,
any votes involving
general funds necessarily
impact what will be available
for other things, such
as employee compensation.
While an active employee
could recuse himself from
such votes, I prefer to have
trustees who can legally and
ethically vote on the vast
majority of issues facing
the Village Board. For that
reason, I support Hinkamp,
Karton and Khoja as Glenview
trustees.
Trustees fail to uphold
Comprehensive Plan
In the new Glenview
Comprehensive Plan, there
are four components intended
to address the current
deficit of 410 affordable
residences necessary
for the Village to comply
with AHPAA, the state law
intended to promote affordable
housing. The first
component is assessment.
They determined Glenview
is not in compliance.
The second component is
identifying areas appropriate
for affordable housing.
Multifamily developments
near transportation, groceries
and pedestrian friendly
were designated. The third
component was incentives.
Among these were zoning
bonuses, direct Village
involvement, property tax
abatement, financing assistance,
outright grants, reduced
fees and cooperation
with affordable housing developers
requesting private/
public funding. The fourth
section was the goal. Increasing
affordable housing
to the requisite 10-percent
level was the only goal.
Currently, the Village
has two properties that
it is marketing itself which
clearly meet the multifamily,
close to transportation,
groceries, pedestrian friendly
and other characteristics.
Are any of the 26 residences
approved for the former
city hall site affordable? Is
the Village demonstrating
its will to meet the goal of
10-percent affordability by
extending the incentives
outlined in section three?
Instead, trustees are waiting
for a developer to “ask”
for these incentives. If they
don’t ask, they are not in-
