Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Malia Burden
The Loyola poms squad member helped
LA qualify for the national tournament.
Do you have any superstitions
before a competition?
It’s more of a team one but before we go
out to perform, the captains go around and
pump everyone up. This year our motto
was “five, six, seven, eight, 14 strong all
day long” so we’d always say that.
Is there something that people
don’t know about you?
I really like both math and science.
What’s the best coaching advice
you’ve ever received?
To be confident. I’d always be nervous
before dance, so our choreographer
told me to be confident and not worry
as much. It worked and I’ve lost those
nerves before dance now.
If you could travel to one place,
where would it be?
Paris. I’ve been studying French for all
four years at Loyola, so it’s something
that really interests me. I’d love to experience
the culture.
If you could have dinner with three
people, who would they be and
why?
They would be all ancestors. I’d love
to have dinner with my great-grandparents
because it would be fascinating to
learn about my family and our history.
What’s been your favorite moment
at Loyola?
I have two, one poms-related and one
not. For the poms-related moment, it’s a
pep rally where the seniors choreograph
a dance that’s performed in front of the
entire school. It’s really awesome to be
able to show your hard work off to the
school. My other favorite moment is going
on Kairos this year because it helps
PHOTO SUBMITTED
people learn to find yourself and the
people around you.
What’s the best part about being a
Loyola Ramblerette?
My teammates. We spend the entire
year together, whether it be at practice, in
school or competitions. They’ve become
my best friends and we are all like sisters
to each other.
If you were to go to a deserted
island, what are you bringing?
My mom to keep me company and my
phone so I can communicate with my
friends and family and keep in contact.
What’s your favorite place to eat
on the north shore?
Yardhouse in The Glen. It was one of
the first my family went when we moved
to Golf from the city and I’ve loved it
since then.
Favorite athlete?
Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant. My
family and I love the Cubs.
