‘‘they got game!”
The amount of junior tennis players who ‘got game‘
is staggering across the board. No one can deny
the impact they are having on the sport of tennis.
This is driving the game forward and demanding
that the sport of tennis make room at the table for
them... cause they are the next generation of tennis
superstars we’ll be talking about.
It’s totally amazing the caliber of shots that some
junior tennis players in the 12’s and the 14’s now
possess. By the time these players move into the
16’s, their overall strokes and movement, are pro
level. The only thing that’s missing at that time is
their maturity.
Junior tennis players, have blown the old adage
about kids being seen and not heard, completely
out of the water. They are now here to stay, and
we are not only seeing them, we are also hearing in
a very loud way, what their rackets are saying.
Some players are out there trying to hit spectacular
strokes, to look good for the crowd, but otherwise
playing foolish tennis. In the end it’s not about how
many fancy shots you hit and how hard you hit them.
Did you win is the question. Did all those fancy shots
you hit clear the net and stay in the court, or were
they all errors. It’s not about the fancy or spectacular,
it’s about being effective on the court that matters.
If you got game, bring it. This game is not for the faint of
heart. The sport of competitive junior tennis, is going to
build character in you. You are going to have to get tough,
because players are coming out there, ready for battle. So
if you think you got game, bring it, and take your bumps
and bruises until you become the one, everyone fears.
Cover Story
I
took an interest in tennis
at the age of 6, I was quite
a stubborn kid my dad
always said, and I didn’t
always want to listen to my dad
sometimes when it came to tennis.
I’m Aaron I started at age
11 competing in local USTA
tournaments, I would lose the first
round sometimes, but win at least
one round in the consolation.
At the age of 12, I got to my first
Boys’ 12 main draw finals after
beating the No.2 seed in a 10
point tie breaker, I lost to the
No.1 seed in the finals 6-2, 6-1. At
age 13, I decided to focus all my
talent on tennis, which I felt I had
excelled at more inherently.
I started copying my favorite
tennis player Roger Federer from
forehand to backhand to serve;
and from then on I have never
stopped copying him. The next
stage in my development was to
watch his court positioning, court
play and how he reacts to each
ball when he is about to hit it.
My plan is to define my game
style by developing inside-out
forehand and drop shot like my
favorite player Roger Federer.
By 14, I was fully immersed in the
game of tennis, playing two or
three tournaments per month and
practicing five to twelve hours
a week, along with two hours of
conditioning. For me, tennis is
tough and isn’t just a sport you
play and just forget about. It is a
part of my lifestyle.
Roger Federer is a hard act to
follow but I intend to do just that.
mental
why some junior players
Never Make it
The number one reason a player who has all
the physical attributes never make it, is attitude.
I mean having the wrong attitude. Most junior
tennis players go through a phase, where they
fall in love with themselves and their game.
When this happens, they walk around with a
huge ego as if they are some famous celebrity
that everyone should recognize. Also they have
this belief that certain players are beneath them,
so they even refuse to hit with those players.
24
Serveitup Tennis Magazine April 2017
This attitude is also manifested on the court, by
the way these players respond to their coaches.
Where there used to be a deep respect, and
doing everything instantly ‘to please the coach‘
there is now questioning, disagreements and
even refusal to do exactly what the coach asks
them to do. They eventually do it but, their way.
This disrespect is very evident by their little
smirks and snickers, their lack of effort, anger,
and even outburst at other players, which is
sometimes meant for the coach.
This reaches beyond the court and into simple
tasks like preparation for practice, interacting
with people, taking personal responsibility for
their actions, and even self motivation.
Having the wrong attitude can truly affect and
destroy your entire career and future. That’s
why it’s so important to surround yourself with
a strong team, who won’t let you get away with
adolescence behaviors, that can ruin everything
you worked for so long, so hard.
Today’s athletes are bigger, faster, stronger
than ever before. When you compete against
them, you’re going to have to do at least everything
they do, just to be able to keep up
with them. There is absolutely no room for
cutting corners. Staying on the court and just
hitting tennis balls, won’t get it done. You’re
going to have to get out there, and work, like
you never did before, or you’ll be left behind.
