Bogra teacher honoured among
top global educationists

Shahanaj Parvin, a teacher at the
Upazila Sadar Model Government
Primary School in Sherpur in
Bogra, was honoured among the
top 50 nominees for the Varkey
Foundation Global Teacher Prize
2017 on Sunday.
Shahanaj and her fellow teachers
received their accolades at the
Fifth Global Education and Skills
Forum at The Palm Atlantis Hotel
in Dubai. Education Minister Nurul
Islam Nahid was in attendance.
Meanwhile, Canadian teacher
Maggie MacDonnell collected
the $1 million top award for the
Global Teacher Prize at the event.

Shahanaj was born in a remote
Bangladeshi village to two primary
school teachers. While many
children in Bangladesh drop out
of school in order to support their
families through earning, the dropout
rate was vastly reduced by
Shahanaj’s teaching methods that
emphasised technology and multimedia
applications.
Shahanaj’s inclusion in the 50
person shortlist for the Global
Teacher Prize was reported earlier
on December 16. •
Jubo League leader, 3
others rape schoolgirl

Police are looking for four people
including a Jubo League leader
of Madaripur’s Kalkini who gangraped
an eighth grader on March 11
after abducting her.
The accused are Elahi Kotpal, 35,
Lalon Shikdar, 34, Khoka Shikdar,
30, Shawkat Shikdar, 32, all from
Jajira village. Khoka is the general
secretary of Ramjanpur Union unit
Jubo League.
The case was filed on March 16
after the accused threatened the
victim’s family.
According to the case statement,
the accused had been making propositions
to the victim for quite a
long time. Angered by her refusal,
they abducted her on the night of
March 11 when she stepped out of
her house to go to the toilet.
They took the girl to a nearby
shed and raped her. The girl was
rescued by locals the following day.
The victim’s brother, seeking
anonymity, said the rapists had
threatened them with further violence
if the girl was taken to a hospital
or if any case was filed. Her
family then took her to Dhaka Medical
College Hospital for treatment.
When contacted, Madaripur Additional
Police Superintendent Sumon
Deb stated the accused will be
arrested soon. •
