News A L U M N I German alums reunite at major company Daniel Weller who earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus in management in 2003 from Francis Marion University began as an intern in the Audit Financial Services division of Klynveld, Peat, Marwick, Goerdeler (KPMG International) in December 2005. Although he never imagined working for an audit company, he was pleasantly surprised to learn that this job entailed more than mere number crunching in some cramped, back office. At the same time, Sascha Knoedgen who earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2003 from FMU with a focus on marketing and management landed an interview with Deloitte & Touche, another heavyweight in the audit segment. At Weller’s urging, Knoedgen accepted an offer from the firm and began work. During his job training, Knoedgen met Ronny Hofmann, an FMU alum (’04) who also earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus in management. Hofmann was just beginning his training as well. In February 2007, Weller asked Knoedgen to interview for a job Deutsche Bank with his company, KPMG. Soon after, Knoedgen asked Hofmann to interview with the company. Hofmann was hired in September. The three German alums are now working for the same firm. KPMG is a global network of professional firms providing audit, tax and advisory services. It operates in 148 countries and has more than 113,000 professionals working in member firms around the world. After graduating from FMU, the three students attended graduate schools. Knoedgen earned an M.B.A. in 2005 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Hofmann received his M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina while Weller completed his M.B.A. at the University of Trier, the partner university of FMU. He received his degree in 2007. The three German FMU alums plan to organize an alumni meeting with other German alums this year.
News D E V E L O P M E N T Progress Energy contributes $50,000 to FMU library Francis Marion University recently announced that Progress Energy has made a $50,000 gift to replace computers in the Progress Energy Technology Center located in Rogers Library. Established by the Progress Energy Foundation in 2003 through an $80,000 gift to the library, the Progress Energy Technology Center provides computer access for FMU’s more than 4,100 students 88 hours per week, the same hours the library is open. “We are again deeply indebted to Progress Energy for their continued support of the library program,” said Paul Dove, dean of Rogers Library. “This will replace 17 computers and allow us to begin to circulate laptops among the students.” The gift affords FMU the opportunity to serve the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning by providing students, faculty, staff and regional citizens with access to scholarly information and other resources, Dove added. “Progress Energy is honored to partner with Francis Marion University on the Progress Energy Technology Center,” said Emerson Gower, vice president of Progress Energy Carolinas southern region. “This partnership allows us yet another opportunity to advance our ‘Save the Watts’ campaign through the use of state-of-the-art equipment.” Progress Energy’s “Save the Watts” campaign provides Gause Scholarship established at FMU A scholarship has been established at Francis Marion University by Walter Timothy Gause in memory of his parents, Charlie and Arquila Gause. Gause said the Charlie and Arquila Gause Memorial Scholarship was created to pay tribute to his parent’s commitment to the American dream: “With education, tenacity and faith in God and self, nothing is impossible.” The Britton’s Neck native who was raised in New York said he was looking for a way to give back to the Pee Dee region. “From all I’ve heard and read about the Pee Dee, I can see it is economically challenged,” Gause said. “I am in a position to help and can’t think of a better way to do that than through granting students an opportunity for a wonderful education at Francis Marion.” Gause said he hopes the scholarship will afford Pee Dee area students who demonstrate a financial need and whose major is math, science or sociology, especially as it pertains to addressing social inequality, an opportunity to obtain a degree from FMU. The recipient must also maintain a grade point average of 3.0 and have at least junior status. “There are people you meet during your lifetime that you know immediately want to make a difference in the lives of others. The campaign also promotes and encourages home energy checks, and offers additional ways customers can save money through participation in any of the company’s more than 100 energy-efficiency programs and measures. Progress Energy has been a long-standing supporter of Francis Marion University. As part of FMU’s Campaign for Excellence in 2002, Progress Energy helped to establish an endowed chair in public service named for state Senator Hugh K.
