News C A M P U S Francis Marion Trail Commission has mission to promote path of General In 2005, the South Carolina Legislature created the Francis Marion Trail Commission (Act 159) to incorporate the broadest range of elements possible to tell the story of Gen. Francis Marion. This legislation charges FMTC with planning and implementing a heritage tourism trail centering on campaigns of Gen. Francis Marion. Its mission is to reveal, preserve, develop and promote in a sustainable way, the authentic sites where Francis Marion lived and fought during the Revolutionary War. At the helm of these efforts is Robert C. Barrett, executive director of the FMTC, and its seven members. The members of the commission are: Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University; George Estes of Columbia, representing Parks, Recreation and Tourism; Kitty Mescher of Pinopolis, appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate; Mark Buyck III of Florence, appointed by the Speaker of the House; Ben Zeigler of Florence, appointed by the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee; Duane Shuler of Kingstree, appointed by the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee; and Col. George Summers of Manning, appointed by the governor. Commissioners serve four-year terms. The first of its kind for the Pee Dee, the commission raises funds for the trail from public and private sources, and in coordination with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, designates the location and route of the trail to be included in the department’s State Trail System. Objectives of the commission are to: • Better understand and celebrate the critical part of the Pee Dee’s history that is of national significance. • Preserve the traditional character, culture and heritage of the Pee Dee, Northern Lowcountry, Northern Coastal and Eastern Midlands regions in South Carolina. • Promote tourism in these regions. In the past year, the commission hired archaeologist Steven Smith to construct the trail of Marion, which most recently turned up at least 15 significant sites.
