Nice price, pay twice
The issue of price vs quality raised its head
again recently with a new report from the
BSIA outlining how buyers need to be more
aware of the importance of ROI over the initial
upfront costs of technology and installation
It was interesting to hear this month that the BSIA has
commissioned a white paper to establish the importance of
making purchase decisions based on quality – rather than
initial purchase price alone (see News p8). The idea is to make
buyers aware that there is more to buying security systems than
just the bottom line. This is something that we’ve heard for many
years, especially as security is still seen as a grudge purchase by
many purse string holders. Despite the often used phrase “buy
cheap, pay twice” doing the rounds for some time the Association
still feels that there is a lack of awareness with some financial
controllers as to the return on investment and suitability for
pupose they will get from cheaper security systems.
But these days is it such a black and white case that cheap is
unsuitable and quality costs more? Certainly not in every
discipline within the sector. if you look at the way in which the
CCTV market has gone over recent years you can see that there
are quite a few manufacturers offering good quality products at
very reasonable prices (you know who I’m talking about) and the
success of these cameras and peripherals has made the
companies involved the most successful manufacturers of the
current market. Such was the rapid rise of these companies that
it led to the demise of some of the once leading lights of the
sector including Dedicated Micros, coincidentally the company
that Pauline Norstrom, the person listed as driving the BSIA
report, used to head-up before it went belly up. So perhaps when
it comes to surveillance there is a grey area for value for money,
but then that only refers to the initial cost of the technology - not
the prices you will charge for installation and service.
When it comes to security we all know that maintenance and
warranties are not options that should be skimped on just to save
a few pounds. As an installer you will offer support for systems
that your customers should put more thought into other than just
the recurring costs and the BSIA report does recommend that
providers could better demonstrate the value of their offerings
rather than just trying to compete on price.
Essentially it’s a two-way street, your customers need to look
beyond the initial outlay cost and you need to do more to make
sure that clients understand return on investment over the
lifetime of the system so that you don’t have to shrink margins
just to get the contracts in the first place.
But then we’ve all been saying that for years...
Outsourcing fire and security
systems white paper published
Euralarm has published a white paper on
outsourcing the maintenance of fire safety
security systems, specifically intended for
building owners and
managers.
The purpose of the
white paper is to bring
awareness of the risks of
outsourcing maintenance
and to give guidelines on
how to avoid or minimise
these risks.
More and more
building owners and
managers are outsourcing
the maintenance of their
buildings and systems to
specialised facility
management companies.
By doing so, the fire safety
and security systems are often bundled
together with other types of systems into one
maintenance service contract. This approach
not only lowers the costs but also reduces the
customer base and product offerings grow, the
need for a resource such as this situated close to
our customers has increased too. Our M-Tech
demonstration areas in London and Birmingham
are extremely popular, enabling customers to
see first-hand the solutions we offer, we expect
this 3rd M-Tech to be just as useful.”
The M-Tech will be kitted out with products
from the range of Excel copper, fibre optic, rack
and power management solutions, together with
selected products from IP security, wired and
wireless vendor partners including Axis,
Avigilon, Dahua, Mobotix, Paxton and HPE.
Regular theory and practical training courses
will be held to enable customers to keep up-tospeed
with industry standards, new products,
and gain the necessary accreditation to join
vendor partner programmes.
The demonstration and meeting areas will be
made available to Mayflex customers where this
resource can add value when presenting,
demonstrating or discussing project specific
points.
number of service suppliers. However, the
maintaining of fire safety and security system
services by generalist service suppliers also
brings the risk of non-specialists becoming
responsible for the maintenance of fire safety
and security services.
Meanwhile the building
owner or operator is
responsible for ensuring that
service providers are
qualified and certified to
carry out the work according
to European and local
standards, regulations and
laws. In the event that a fire
safety or security system fails
to work properly, proof of
verification from subcontractors
is crucial, stating
they not only have the
necessary qualifications and
competent staff, but also are
proficient in the appropriate standards,
regulations and laws.
Perimeters must be made more secure in
order to enhance protection
The Justice Secretary, Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP, unveiled the
new Prison and Courts Bill in February 2017 which promises to
dramatically overhaul the justice system. UK jails are
struggling to cope following a 92% increase in prison
population since 1993, creating an alarmingly dire situation .
Most worryingly for the public perhaps, are prison escapes.
There have been 17 successful prison escapes in the ten years
to 2014/15, a number that could rise with the current
instability . The recent high profile escapes at HMP Pentonville
in November 2016 are a timely example of the worsening
situation. One of the key aims of the Prison and Courts Bill is
to improve the security of prisons in an attempt to tackle the
current crisis.
Cris Francis, Head of Commercial Sales at Jacksons Fencing
comments: “In light of the recent break outs at HMP
Pentonville, adequately securing prison perimeters must be of
utmost importance, in conjunction with the other measures to
tackle issues afflicting UK prisons. High security perimeter
solutions such as fences and gates must provide enhanced
protection in order to give security personnel the time to
mount an appropriate response.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Dave McKay,
Managing Director of AFA
Fire and Security Ltd. AFA
is a leading independent service provider
for Security and Fire Systems providing
services across the whole of Scotland.
Today many Insurers are putting the responsibility of Risk
Assessment onto the Installer. What is your approach to
this to ensure you are covered?
Put simply, we always fit a system that we know is exceptional
and safeguards our customers’ needs and requirements. We
listen to the customer and then fit the best equipment we can.
We never cut corners and never fit inferior equipment. Use the
best and you will be the best!
90% of your signalling estate consists of Dual Path
systems. What has driven this?
We ensure that we always install the correct system and one
which is right for our customer. We know we can then develop
and upgrade this system to a higher standard when and where
this is needed. It’s imperative that an installation is fit for the risk
profile. If the wrong grade is installed and something goes wrong,
the Alarm Company may be liable as the Risk Assessor. Making
our customers aware of how easy it is for the grade of signalling
to increase due to a change in circumstances ensures they have
the opportunity to upgrade their system and only pay for the
service they require. This ultimately reassures their experience
with AFA.
You recently reached the milestone of 1,000 signalling
connections. How was this success realised?
Growth has been our focus and in order to achieve this we
needed supply partners who could meet our needs every time. In
this instance we needed a signalling solution that could alleviate
some of the issues we were experiencing at the time. Since we
started working with CSL our DualCom platform has increased
rapidly whilst allowing us to reduce the running costs of our
signalling estate at the same time. This has been vital to our
growth. 1,000 DualCom connections is an accomplishment that
we are very proud of and we hope to continue to build on this
partnership in years to come.
How important are the recurring revenues associated with a
signalling estate to AFA and your success?
This has become increasingly vital for our business. We have to
ensure we have good recurring revenue alongside our focus to
reduce our running and maintenance costs. To develop the
amount of growth we have achieved over the short period we
have had to ensure we are cost effective in our development
plans. Our goals and aspirations are to be the best and hopefully
with the on-going support from our supply partners we will
continue to succeed and develop.
NOTE: This PSI Product Test
was carried out by an
independent third party, not
editorial staff. The manufacturer
had no input in the review
or the final result
The camera is quite heavy for a dome at just
over 2kg but is well packaged and has a very
good level of construction. The solid base is
designed with fixing holes isolated from the
environmentally separated inner section. A side
conduit fixing is provided at the rear of the base
and two grommets are provided for the PoE
network connection and additional Alarm/Audio
and power cables. All necessary parts are
provided and the 3 cable Alarm/Audio lead has a
grommet pre-fitted.
Features
The dome is based on 4 camera modules fitted
with 3.6mm F2.0 lenses giving a field of view of
180° x 84° with a maximum resolution of 4096 x
1800 pixels. The camera assembly when mounted
allows for the device to be rotated through 355°
and tilted from 0 to 60°.
Getting started
Three captive Torx screws hold the clear dome in
place; there is no tether linking it to the base.
Plugging in a PoE enabled network cable begins
the domes start-up routine.
After about 50 seconds from start-up the
internal fan started running, even with an ambient
temperature of 24°C. With the cover removed this
was relatively noisy but is unlikely to be
noticeable in the majority of environments when
fully installed. The vibration did penetrate
however, so this may be something to watch out
for if installing in quiet locations such as cashoffices.
By default, the camera is set to DHCP so was
allocated an address within the subnet of the test
network.
Software
The supplied disc has four folders named as
Install Program, Network Setup Guide, Quick
Guide and User Manual. The Install Program
folder has two files, IP_Installer_V2.0.1.2.exe and
Silverlight.dmg. The IP Installer program is a basic
device discovery tool and has the advantage of
being capable of running from the disk without
installation onto the PC and immediately found
the camera when run. The other file appeared to
be a Microsoft Silverlight disk image, possibly for
Apple MAC devices but no reference to it is given
in any of the supplied manuals or website. The
naming conventions are not helpful in this regard.
The other folders hold a well-produced 74
page User Manual, a 49 page Network Set-up
Guide and an 18 page Quick Guide. These are
presented in 14 language variants.
As there is no conventional SD analogue
composite output from this camera you must
ensure you have a suitable TVI test monitor for
image position setting otherwise communicating
with the control position will be necessary.
Operation
When first connected with a browser the camera
requires a strong password to be set. Once this is
entered the camera is presented in its basic
viewing mode. It was very encouraging to see that
the display entered a default video profile as a
suitable plug-in was not detected. This ensures an
image is immediately available rather than having
to load firmware or drivers to gain an image.
While the user manual recommends IE, Firefox
and Safari browsers as they fully support the
Hanwha plug-in, the plug-in free viewer allows
alternative browsers such as Edge and Chrome to
be used albeit in default profile.
The test camera was tried with Edge, Chrome
and Firefox on Windows 10, with all giving good
image quality and set-up features but only the
Firefox browser having the option to load the
plug-in for full features to be available. Browser
variants on Windows 8 and 7 also produced
immediate images.
Both the Hanwha Plug-in free and the
WebViewer displays give access to the full range
of set-up features but only the WebViewer
provides additional live display features and
playback from the optional Micro SD on-board
memory. A panorama view gives a quad split
screen where the top left quadrant shows the
whole view with the other three quadrants
available for selected digital zoom views from the
overall scene. The zoom range and position can
be controlled within the quadrant or by selecting
the relevant outlined box in the overview. This
quad display can then be set to full screen mode
for display purposes.
With the clear bowl removed there is ready
access to the connectors and Micro SD card slot.
A single central slider moves all four sensors
vertically to suit the camera angle of view
required. The four sensors are mounted onto a
solid casting that should ensure there is
consistent image segment positioning geometry
over time. The whole assembly runs relatively
cool so this should extend product life.
TEST
This camera performs
well and is capable of
covering a very wide
area with a good level
of image detail
9.0 out of 10
(continued from p12)
A reset button is provided between the power
and alarm/audio connectors. This restores factory
settings and returns the DHCP setting to ‘On’ if
held down for more than 5 seconds.
Menu options
There are just six top level menu options arranged
down the left-hand side of the Setup window,
these are:
Basic – Video profiles, User management, Date &
Time, IP & Port settings and Event setup.
Audio & Video – Orientation, Privacy, ROI,
WiseStream and Image Alignment.
Network – DDNS, IP Filtering, Connection security
settings, SNMP and IP Auto-configuration.
Event – FTP/E-mail, Storage, Alarms, Scheduling
and Event types.
Heatmap – Statistics and Setup.
System – Information, Upgrade/Reboot, Logs,
Status and Open SDK.
WiseStream is Hanwha’s compression process
that they say improves on both H.264 and H.265
streams by dynamically managing the GOP or
GOV (Group of Pictures / Video) rate.
Image Alignment allows major and minor
horizontal and vertical adjustments to be made to
each of the four sensor images to alleviate some
of the inevitable stitching effects that can occur
when viewing some scenes. This may appear as a
blurring of subjects or edges as they pass across
the image join.
The Event menu provides setup commands for
Tampering and Defocus detection, Motion
Detection / Video Analysis, Audio level detection
and Network disconnection actions.
The Heatmap gives a colour overlay of areas of
regular movement within the scene with
maximum movement shown in red. There are
facilities for searching by date and time, resultant
images can be saved as .png files.
Performance
The camera performs well and is relatively easy to
install and operate. The engineer-friendly browser
access reduces the time often spent trying to get
drivers or Plug-ins loaded.
The full picture is made up of 4096 x 1800
pixels with 4 x 3.6mm lenses giving a viewing
angle of 180° H x 84° V (45° H x 84° V per sensor).
Sensitivity is stated as 0.3 lux at F 2.0. A range of
settings allow the sensitivity to be optimised with
exposure settings from 2 seconds to 1/12,000
with a default of 1/5 second maximum.
Seven image presets are available to provide
emphasis on such things as Motion, Noise
reduction and Definition or custom user values
can be entered to suit the local conditions.
There is no built-in infrared lighting due to the
wide-angle nature of the sensor arrangement but
the camera is true day/night with filter switching
that can be manually controlled, scheduled,
automated or triggered via the alarm input.
External IR illuminators can be used and in testing
no ‘hunting’ was observed.
While the alarm input can be triggered via a
simple closing contact, the alarm output is of the
‘Open Collector’ variety so must feed a
transistorised relay or similar circuit. Diagrams
are provided in the user manual.
The motion detection, tamper and defocus
detection features all worked well and as
expected, but the video analytic features proved
more problematic. The manual provides basic
details on setting the camera for analytic features
such as directional line crossing, area entering /
exiting and objects appearing / disappearing
which would not initially generate an alert, record
images or activate the alarm output signal in spite
of multiple attempts.
Eventually it was found that the Size, Area and
crossing line had to be very carefully coordinated
in order to get it running. A more detailed or
diagrammatic section in the manual would be
helpful coupled with a triggering indicator as at
present it is necessary to return to the live view to
confirm the activations. However, once correctly
set the system worked very well.
Activation clips can be recorded to the Micro
SD card in either AVI or STW video formats. The
STW being a proprietary Hanwha format and
therefore providing a level of evidential
traceability.
Privacy zones are set within the Video Setup
sub menu. These are entered as four points on the
screen to enclose the privacy area with 6
obscuring colour options to choose from and freetext
names can be given. The enclosed area does
not have to be rectangular so there is good
flexibility for zone positioning. Though not stated
in the manual, it was found that up to 16 zones
could be allocated; this should be more than
enough for the majority of applications.
Conclusion
This camera performs well and is capable of
covering a very wide area with a good level of
image detail. The high pixel rate means that
digital zooming can be used with reasonable
effect. The hardware is robust and provides easy
access to internal connections and the memory
card slot. Being IP66 rated with an IK10 impact
rating means that this dome will be suitable for
harsh environments.
The Safety Letterbox Company -
Flaplock
fencing are secure.”
The company developed the Flaplock following
demand from Arson Task Force teams across the
UK. It essentially seals the letterbox and prevents
access, providing a practical security solution to
protect homes and businesses from criminal
intrusion and arson attacks.
This device is highly
recommended
especially for
premises that are
left unoccupied for
some time
What’s in the box?
Flaplock unit
Instructions
Four fixing screws (optional)
9 out of 10
Every year in the UK, there are estimated to
be over 3,000 attacks on businesses due to
arson attempts, which contribute to over
45% of fires that occur on commercial properties.
The majority of these are down to vandals who
target the property at the right time. However, as
we have seen recently with arson attacks on
commercial properties in England, it is extremely
hard for businesses to recover from an arson
attack.
Not only can companies suffer from financial
hardship following such an attack, owners and
employees must recover emotionally.
An arson attack is far more common than we
might think, and last year the average cost of
arson per business was over £80,000, a
staggering sum for smaller companies.
Although arson is not completely preventable,
more business owners are taking proactive
measures against such crimes. A solution to the
problem of letterbox arson is a lockable letter
flap, such as the Flaplock.
According to Alison Orrells, managing director
of The Safety Letterbox Company who
manufacture the system: “Flaplock is an
inexpensive and extremely effective solution that
can be installed in minutes to any door, providing
peace of mind and additional security while
helping to prevent possible loss of lives and
costly destruction to property.
“Half of all fires in the UK are arson-related,
with a number of these started via the letterbox. I
feel many businesses could and should benefit
from the instant reassurance supplied by this type
of product as well as implementing other safety
measures such as locking all windows and doors,
and making sure any access points in walls or
Installation
The unit comes with instructions and four fixing
screws for optional use. For the simplest fitting
method simply remove the protective film from
the adhesive pads and press the Flaplock to the
inside face of the door ensuring that the aperture
in the door aligns with the aperture in the unit.
With this installation method the company claims
that the lock will protect up to a shear strength of
30.6 kilos.
For additional strength the four screws can be
used to fix the lock into place. This is also an easy
fix as it only involves the removal of two retaining
screws at the top of the lock allowing the
detachment of the base template, which is then
attached using the four supplied screws. The lock
is then reassembled and the two retaining screws.
Performance
Once fitted using the simple adhesive pad method
the lock appeared firmly held in place on a uPVC
door and when locked it withstood very heavy
pushing attempts to gain access. This would
easily cope with quick opportunistic cases of
criminal damage. The use of the four screws for
maximum strength protection presented a
completely inaccessible letterbox.
The lock is a fairly simple solution to what can
be a devastating attack yet it also has some
additional features that make it appeal to users.
The flap on the unit is locked into place using two
swivelling retainers both of which move smoothly
and have an aperture allowing the use of a
padlock to further secure the unit if required.
Conclusion
Arson can have a devastating, as well as deadly,
impact on a building and its occupants so this
device is highly recommended especially for
premises that are left unoccupied for some time.
Other benefits of fitting this locking system are
the complete halt to junk mail, litter and
attempted break-ins using the gap.
The unit is priced at £29.99 (March 2017).
BakkerElkhuizen S-board 840
Finding somewhere to
put a keyboard can
be a problem;
balancing a unit on
your leg or on top of
a panel is tricky!
What’s in the box?
Keyboard
Instructions
Carry pouch
8.5 out of 10
Ever since the introduction of the PC in the
early 1980s , the keyboard has been an
integral part of the computer system. It
wasn’t until 1984 that the ‘mouse’ came along to
work alongside the keyboard. Since then the
keyboards we use haven’t changed much at all,
but in the years between there has been quite a
lot of research carried out into the relationship
between the continued use of a mouse and
keyboard on the likelihood and causes of
repetitive strain injury (RSI).
It was this research that drove the
development of the BakkerElkhuizen S-board 840
Design USB compact keyboard - a compact
keyboard that does not have a numeric pad. For
this reason, the mouse can be placed closer to the
keyboard. Research has shown that 90% of
keyboard users seldom if ever use the numeric
pad. Working with a compact keyboard results in
greater comfort because it reduces the reaching
distance to the mouse (Cook, C., et al., 1998)
which can be positioned right in front of the right
shoulder, which facilitates a better posture of the
right arm and shoulder when using the mouse.
This puts less strain on the shoulder and forearm
as it reduces the reaching distance required. Dark
letters on a light background make them easier to
read (ISO 9241), and contribute to increased
productivity (Snyder, 1990).
The keyboard also has two USB ports for the
connection of devices (not more than 500mA in
total) and a row of ten multimedia keys giving
shortcuts to various actions such as Save, Copy,
Paste, Email etc.
In action
In the security installation sector there are two
types keyboard operatives, the installer and the
office admin/support personnel.
For the installer, a USB keyboard is sometimes
used for the more complex programming of alarm
panels, so it is likely that you would have one in
the van. But are there any benefits to having an
ergonomically designed unit priced at £51.99 (ex
VAT) over a standard keyboard that costs less
than £10? There are a couple.
Firstly the S-board 840 is smaller than a
standard keyboard as it measures 30cm x 16cm
compared to around 43cm x14cm for a regular
design. This is obviously due to the compact
nature and lack of a number pad in the 840 which
makes the unit more portable. This coupled with a
carry pouch included in the box helps with the
day-to-day handling of the keyboard. And while
the unit is certainly not ‘ruggedised’ it does feel
more solid than cheaper options.
Over in the office where keyboards are a major
component of the working day there are a few
points of note with the unit not just its size –
which was the initial topic of discussion. The
scissor mechanism (instead of membranes) inside
the S-board 840 gave a light keystroke that
proved popular with experienced keyboard users.
It is recommended that the keyboard legs are
retracted to give a slope of 0-12° to prevent
excessive wrist extension so our reviewers used
this position for testing. There did appear to be
less ‘stretching’ involved with the compact nature
of the unit allowing closer proximity of the mouse.
The lack of a number pad did take some getting
used to.
Conclusion
While the anti-RSI design of the S-board 840
doesn’t really apply to installers while out on a
job, if you’ve ever needed to plug in a USB
keyboard to run some diagnostics or input some
more complex programming into an alarm panel
you might have found finding somewhere to put
the keyboard a bit of problem; balancing a unit on
your leg or on top of the panel is tricky! This small
footprint keyboard could therefore be of benefit in
tight spots.
Of course it is in the office that the benefits of
this keyboard are really apparent. The amount of
research that goes into RSI prevention in the
workplace outlines the very real problems that
can result of a desk, terminal and seating position
that does not provide the neutral position as
described in EU and ISO guidelines.
As an installer you might not want to splash
out on one these for yourself especially as the use
of touchscreens on panels is certainly on the rise,
but your office team might well appreciate the
benefits of the S-board 840.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss
new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day
activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our
attention so here we take a look at some of the products we
think you won’t want to miss this month.
Remote surveillance system
status monitoring update
Surveon has announced the updated version for
SurveOne web-based management tool which
provides an easy way to manage surveillance
system in real time.
The web-based SurveOne allows users to check
the overall system status in a browser using HTTP.
As long as there is network connectivity, users can
monitor the system status locally or remotely and
ensure the consistency stability. To quickly grasp
the system at a glance, SurveOne provides users
graphical information, including NVR status,
network connectivity, storage capacity, and
camera status so the status can be figured out
more efficiently. Moreover, with three groups of
event logs: critical error, error, and warning, users
can identify the priority of the events and take
action accordingly. Designed for easy
configuration, deployment and maintenance,
SurveOne allows users to do one-time setup for
NVR or camera configurations that can
be saved as backup to help simplify
future set-up processes.
Solar powered security for
remote locations
Sunstone IP Systems has designed a patent
pending Solar IP CCTV System (SICS), which
delivers HD surveillance in remote locations.
SICS was designed in response to the
challenge of delivering wireless surveillance in
remote and corrosive environments combined
with extreme weather conditions to enable
seamless HD monitoring for high security
operations across a wide geographic area, such as
oilfields. Typically, such environments lack fixed
buildings, power and connectivity, so it was
integral that SICS was designed to be completely
standalone, easily transportable and rapidly
deployed.
Completely self-sustaining, SICS uses a 500w
combination of ruggedised solar panels, which
were custom engineered for optimum solar angles
in a range of global locations. The energy from the
sun is harvested from the panels and stored in a
proprietary harsh environment battery system,
which is designed to withstand deep cycling along
with high and low temperatures.
In addition, SICS is fitted with a system
controller, which enables real-time monitoring of
all aspects of the system, including solar and
battery performance, alongside a GPS location
alert on system threats.
NOW FEATURING
Enhanced Password Control
Pa55w0rd!
ADMIN
1234
Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available
on the market today.
Installers will have the option of Enhanced Password Control (EPC). This will prohibit the use of ‘1234’ and other
easily infiltrated passwords and only allow the use of passwords upon selection, the EPC will remove any
backdoor user capability and will disable P2P and DDNS options by default.
Videcon understand that certain installations will not require such a high level of security; therefore, EPC is purely
optional. Compatibility to organisations requiring a stringent level of password protection is essential and it is this
compatibility that undoubtedly makes the Concept Pro recording devices the most secure in the market
suitable for use in government, public space and banks to name but a few.
Enhanced Password Control, easy interoperability and the potential for use in a varying array of situations
ensure that Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available on the market today.
Secure Eurpean Servers & P2P
P2P networking makes it simple for installers to configure mobile viewing of the Concept Pro
Recorders on smartphones and tablets. Installers simply activate mobile viewing by
INTRUDER
Enhancing functionality
How is the introduction of smart
technology changing the intruder
alarm system and how it is
approached by installers?
While times and technologies change
(especially since the first systems were
developed in the mid-1800s) the basic
premise of the intruder alarm system has not;
essentially sensors placed around a site are
connected to a panel which manages the alarms
and response.
Over the years developments such as wireless,
remote monitoring and connectivity
breakthroughs have all enhanced the process and
each of these innovations have themselves
improved from technology evolutions since
inception.
The benefits of these improvements to the
alarm system have certainly benefitted the
customer and the emergency services with false
alarm reductions and more efficient performance,
but what have been the benefits for installers?
Well, for starters, wireless systems have allowed
alarms to be fitted in listed buildings, remote
monitoring of the panels has brought
maintenance costs down and the time spent on
installing the equipment has been cut.
There was some talk last year of the intruder
alarm panel having a shelf life that might be
running out due to modern innovations, so here’s
a look at the technologies that are trending in the
market at moment.
Smart developments
One of the latest developments in the sector is
the introduction of Cloud technology which gives
your customers and yourself access to remote
services which enhance the operation and
ownership of the alarm system. But the big thing
at the moment is smart technology and it is
having a double-edged impact on the professional
security sector; firstly it is bringing in new
business for alarm installers as people want to
have smartphone control/access to their home
technology, however it is also having an impact
because many smart CCTV systems are DIY fitted.
In terms of alarm systems though, the new
developments and use of smartphones is having a
positive impact and is improving the functionality
of an installation as Guy Dodd of Pyronix said
when asked about the smart effect.
“The development of apps and remote access
solutions are not threatening the intruder alarm
market, but rather they are enhancing it,” he says.
“The intruder alarm panel is boosted by the
added function and usability that these
applications and remote access solutions provide.
“End users are now able to remotely protect
their home or business, while checking on their
pets, monitoring an elderly relative, checking on
their children from work, closing or opening their
gates and garages or turning their lights on and
off for example. These added benefits provide
opportunities to move away from the longestablished
‘grudge purchase’ shadow and into
the ‘lifestyle purchase’ light.”
In this case there is more value in steering
towards the new functions from a marketing and
sales perspective, but the core element of the
system should and will always remain security. A
professional, certified alarm system that the end
user can have day-to-day interaction with, which
enhances their lifestyle while fulfilling the primary
function: keeping them, their property and their
family safe from intrusion.
“In terms of commercial applications and
domestic security then, rather than a gradual
phasing out of the panel domestically, what we
will see is a gradual merging between the trusted
professional security and the added functionality
of applications and remote access solutions,”
Improvements to the alarm system have certainly
benefitted the customer and the emergency services with
false alarm reductions and more efficient performance
INTRUDER
(from previous page)
says Guy. “This could even be the case for
commercial applications, with benefits like alarm
notifications and remote monitoring enhancing
the security panel when it comes to the end user
having added peace of mind that their business is
protected.
“The core element of any alarm system is the
intrusion aspect and the peace of mind the
security provides. What applications and remote
access solutions do is provide us with the
opportunity to add greater function and life
enhancing elements to our systems and develop
new ways to market and improve.”
Daniel Wan of Honeywell Security and Fire
agrees: “The connected “smart” home trend has
had a huge impact on the professional security
sector,” he says. “As the price point for connected
technology falls, consumer expectation has
skyrocketed. Homeowners today increasingly
demand integrated home devices, such as smart
meters, connected media systems, and even
connected kitchen appliances, all controlled by
their smartphone. They want and indeed expect
more functionality from the devices they buy and
already own.”
The smart home trend presents a great
opportunity for security manufacturers and
installers to drive revenue. The security system is
an excellent common platform for home
automation, and integrating with other connected
home technologies can expand its functionality
into every day home applications. As a result,
manufacturers and installers are bringing more
solutions to market that rely on the same kind of
technology – such as controlling security systems
via smartphone.
“Although smartphone control is unlikely to
The smart home trend presents a
great opportunity for security
installers to drive revenue. The
security system is an excellent
common platform for home
automation, and integrating with
other connected home
technologies can expand its
functionality
replace dedicated devices such as keyfobs or
keypads, it does provide more functionality,”
explains Daniel. “Using cloud technology,
smartphone access can allow homeowners to
access video feeds or recordings remotely, stored
entirely on the cloud. This function provides
peace of mind to homeowners that their home is
safe and secure, wherever they are in the world.”
A trusted manufacturer and installer are still
essential for any homeowner looking to install a
connected home system. Buying from a trusted
manufacturer ensures the product has been
developed with experience of security
professionals in mind, protecting homeowners in
all situations. If mains power or internet
connections should fail, for example, a product
from a trusted manufacturer will ensure the home
is still protected.
But choosing a good product is not enough –
an installation by a professional installer ensures
quality, reliability, and provides peace of mind to
homeowners. If any issues arise, the homeowner
knows they can rely on the installers’ support,
which is a real advantage compared to buying
“DIY” products from a vendor online.
“In 2017 and beyond, the security system will
be an increasingly popular choice for building a
holistic connected home system,” predicts Daniel.
“Installers and manufacturers who do not
embrace the potential that these technologies can
provide risk missing out on a booming market.”
Complimentary technology
Traditionally, intrusion detection systems are
used as a deterrent and to create an alarm if there
is unauthorised access. This could be just an
audible signal, a connection to a central
monitoring station, or even a device that calls or
messages a phone. There is nothing wrong with
this and it has worked for years.
So do remote apps, networking and the cloud
threaten this? Is it the end of the alarm system or
panel as we know it - and will we move completely
to edge devices? Alistair Enser of Vanderbilt
believes that apps, the cloud and Internet
protocol based technologies should be
24
www.psimagazine.co.uk

considered complementary rather than a threat, or
replacement.
“The cloud offers the potential to create more
value, greater flexibility and added services,” he
says. “These might include remote service,
maintenance and support, an enhanced end user
experience, or easier integration with other
disciplines such as video verification. On the other
hand there are considerations like cyber security,
network integrity, changes to existing revenue and
business models, changes in installation habits,
changes in control room and central monitoring
hardware, for example, to deal with.
“Fully ‘standalone’ edge devices would require
power, decision making and connectivity which
today may not present an economic alternative to
a central panel. Alternatively, decisions could be
cloud based, but this may be tough for approval
bodies to accept, particularly if the system goes
‘offline’,” reveals Alistair. “If, however, it did
become viable to have field devices connected
directly to the cloud without a panel, how would
an installer or manufacturer extract value from
fewer hardware sales? The answer is simple – by
selling services, not products. Apps could be
licensed by user, by site or by number of
connections, while services that create value for
an end user could be chargeable on an annual
basis.”
Ultimately the landscape is changing and those
installers that look to the future as an opportunity
will do well especially if they can offer customers
more functionality and smart features that appeal
to the modern consumer. Enhancing the panel is
the next step for intruder sector, not replacing it or
the installer.
The PSI Premier Awards Dinner
This year’s Awards Dinner will follow the annual
PSI Golf Day being held at the Luton Hoo Hotel,
Golf & Spa in Bedfordshire. Guest speaker for
the event will be former footballer Ray Parlour.
Ray Parlour spent 14
years at Highbury.
He made 468
appearances in all,
winning two FA Cups, the
League Cup, three league
titles and two FA Cups
(scoring against Chelsea
PANEL
The appeal of apprentices
How important are apprentices in
tackling the skills shortage in the
UK security/fire installation sector?
The PSI Panel reveals what can be
done to make the industry more
appealing to the next generation of
engineers...
Last monthsaw the official launch of the Fire,
Emergency and Security Systems Trailblazer
scheme which gives a dedicated structure to
the training of the next generation of installers.
Therefore this was the perfect time to discuss
the importance of getting people into the
industry and how employers can help ensure
the future of the the security/fire sector.
Simon Banks - CSL
Apprentices are vital to
tackling the skills shortage in
the Fire and Security
installation sector. Employers
should now feel encouraged to
home-grow their own robust
talent pipeline to drive their
businesses forward in line with new technology.
With the official launch of the Fire,
Emergency and Security Systems Trailblazer
standard the sector has never looked more
appealing to apprentices wanting to follow an
electrotechnical vocation. The Trailblazer has
been developed by the sector, for the sector
providing structured training for the next
generation of Installers. This positions our
industry in the very forefront of innovation,
making it the de facto choice for advancement
into the Internet of Things (IoT), home
automation and AV.
Employers should start recruiting to avoid
getting left behind. New technology brings with
it new challenges, notably the demand for new
skills to understand and implement. Each day
the price of skills is increasing. The rarer it is,
the more expensive it becomes. The new
Trailblazer means that the sector will be in a
stronger position to attract the thousands of
energetic, innovative young people leaving
schools and colleges each year.
For more information on recruitment and
funding, a new Apprentices for Fire and Security
pocket guide developed by the Trailblazer
stakeholders will be available via the A4FS.org
website.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Guy Dodd - Pyronix
In our industry, apprenticeship
programmes have a vital role
to play in tackling the skills
shortage. By offering direct
learning opportunities
alongside professional
engineers, the next generation
literally learn by doing it. This is the perfect
insight and learning experience any young
apprentice needs to join the industry and be
successful.
By utilising apprenticeships, the next
generation of engineer will already know what
to do when unforeseen circumstances appear
during installations, or maintenance calls and
how to best overcome such issues. It is certain
that apprenticeship programmes are very
important going forward, but installation
companies could also fit more wireless systems
in their commercial installs in the interim.
When we look at apprenticeships, they are a
long-term investment that will bear fruit in the
future, but commercial wireless is available now
and could make up for the skills shortage and
the lack of engineers immediately. If fitting a
wired system, the engineer is sent to site to
subsequently run cables, lift floorboards and
move furniture. Instead of this, installation
companies can work smarter by utilising
products that can drive their efficiencies going
forward.
While apprenticeships help in training the
next generation of installers, wireless
technology can help this generation of
(continued over)
“By utilising
apprenticeships, the
next generation of
engineer will already
know what to do when
unforeseen
circumstances appear
during installations,
or maintenance calls
and how to best
overcome such
issues”
PANEL
“As an industry
shouldn’t we want to
look for tomorrow’s
future technicians
today? Take the
electrical sector as a
good model. They
seem to have the
correct approach for
us to adopt”
(from previous page)
installers. Rather than having to wait until the
apprentices are trained to professional
standards, companies can prosper from faster
and easier installations now, while training the
next generation at the same time. By increasing
efficiency and working smarter with wireless
technology, installation companies can increase
their profitability by minimising the time they
have to spend on site and subsequently become
more appealing to young engineers.
Broadband, smart devices, automation, IP,
cloud and applications are the norm and
security needs to feed into this through wireless
technology. Moving to commercial wireless
installations is more in keeping with the
evolution of technology in other sectors and
makes security relevant in a digital age. Not only
that, but by embracing this change it would also
show apprentices how to fit the faster and
future technology.
Wired systems are often very messy, invasive
and time consuming to fit, while wireless
systems are quick, clean, simple and feed into
cloud technologies, which also opens the
system to remote maintenance and diagnostics.
Having a security system where the installation
company can ascertain the issue, before
sending the engineer to site, or even being able
to rectify it remotely, surely has positive
implications?
So, utilising wireless technology, alongside
apprenticeship programmes, will drive
efficiency, provide more functionality, be more
appealing for young engineers and tackle the
skills shortage in the interim and long term.
David Davies - DVS
Apprentices are the key to the
future success of the industry
and its growth and
development. For me going
back 20 years ago when I
embarked on my journey into
this industry I was privileged
to be part of a new apprentice initiative with a
major national company, enabling me to develop
a broad spectrum of skills and experience in the
classroom as well as in the field in a real life
working environment where you sometimes
need to be creative with solutions. Whilst there
are still some active apprenticeship schemes
running, they no longer seem to be widespread
across the industry.
As an industry shouldn’t we want to look for
tomorrow’s future technicians today? Take the
electrical sector as a good model. They seem to
have the correct approach for us to adopt ,
where young enthusiastic individuals are taken
into the system and given a mixture of
classroom based tuition and field based
experience, where they are monitored and
assessed to ensure that what they are being
taught is not only being applied by them but
also that the work is undertaken in a safe,
correct and consistent manner, and only after
they have qualified would they be certified to
work on electrical systems without supervision.
This is surely the right approach for the security
industry as it continues to professionalise.
Promoting apprentice schemes should
hopefully generate an influx of hard working
individuals who would then form the
foundations for skilled individuals to continue to
lead our industry into tomorrow’s technology
whilst also assuring that standards are
maintained and technical knowledge is also
applied. We would all surely see the benefit
from improved ability, fresh ideas and
knowledge that such schemes would promote.
Stephen D Green -
Security Institute
Contemplating this question
plays to my professional
schizophrenia. I am both an
electronics engineer and a
security professional; two
disciplines that often compete
for influence over my world view. This is yet
another such occasion.
From a technological perspective, there is
little we touch daily that is unique to the
security industry. We design, install and
maintain a plethora of mechanical, electrical,
30
www.psimagazine.co.uk

electronic and telecommunications systems,
some of which are very specialised, but none
that is truly bespoke unto this industry. This
allows us to poach (or in modern parlance, to
leverage) talent from complementary
disciplines. Indeed, an experienced engineer
who is time-served within the security industry
is a relatively rare beast when compared to the
multitudes that have transferred in later in life.
Add to this those engineers and technicians
working for multi-disciplinary companies, where
security is but part of a wider service portfolio,
and the argument for the industry fostering its
own cadre of apprentices appears weak.
However, before you lynch me, the security
professional in me would raise a counterargument.
For modern security practitioners are
not simply engineers or technicians; above all
they are professional risk managers. We design
and install systems for the sole purpose of
mitigating identified, quantified security risks.
Without an understanding of perpetrator
psychology and how crime can be deterred by
adapting the environment within which it
occurs, or how the reassurance of a visible
presence can reduce the fear of crime by
empowering potential victims, or what standard
of surveillance data is required to achieve a
conviction, the design is unlikely to succeed.
Such understanding can only be gained
through experience within suitably challenging
security environments. It is this variety and
interest that will attract apprentices looking for
careers beyond the ordinary, whilst offering
most opportunity to the companies that nurture
them.
Mike Croker -
Grosvenor Technology
Apprentices are key to
addressing the skills shortage
in the UK security and fire
installation sector. They offer
an immediate, effective
solution for employers to
‘grow their own’ and are producing amazing
results for their businesses. These are exciting
times for the UK security installation sector with
the economy picking up and more opportunities
available. The investment in apprenticeship
schemes offers a great solution to these
challenges. There is however uncertainty over
the changing needs of the security industry; the
evolving use of technology; and clarity over
where the future work will be.
Millennials are the generation now entering
the workplace. Millennials’ use of technology
clearly sets them apart. One of the defining
characteristics of the millennial generation is
www.psimagazine.co.uk
their affinity with the digital world. They have
grown up with broadband, smartphones,
laptops and social media being the norm and
expect instant access to information. This is the
first generation to enter the workplace with a
better grasp of a key business tool than more
senior workers.
Which is why companies need to adapt and
change quickly if there are to attract and more
importantly retain the millennial generation.
Training is a key element in this. At Grosvenor
Technology we are re-thinking how young
engineers are trained with a move to creating a
learning environment. The classes offered focus
on real practical examples, with a hands-on
approach to learning new skills. Powerpoint
training is no longer used. Young engineers are
provided with resources, access to a microlearning
environment, and clear signposts to
key resources - making the whole experience
more relevant and memorable
Time will tell which is the best approach, but
we all need to adapt to the changing workforce
of the future.
Steve Martin - FSA
There's no question that
apprentices are crucial to the
industry's future. They won't
just help us solve the skills
shortage, they'll help the
industry evolve and grow. The
younger generation of
engineers has a fresh perspective and often a
different way of assessing and tackling
problems, which will be important as the
industry evolves and firms seek out new
commercial opportunities.
But an apprenticeship requires substantial
commitment from an employer, and as
apprentice recruitment is relatively new to our
industry, many firms will be unsure about what
the process involves.
I'd advise anyone thinking about hiring an
apprentice to download a copy of the guide to
apprenticeships that our industry's trailblazer
group has been producing. It should help those
who want to know more about recruiting
apprentices, and assist apprentices understand
what’s involved.
The other point I would make is that if we
want to hire more apprentices, we need to have
more demand for apprenticeships. This can only
happen if young people (and their parents)
understand the opportunities a career in this
industry can offer. Ultimately, it’s those who are
working in the industry who are best placed to
help them, and the FSA will be working with
partner organisations to help achieve this.
(continued over)
“There's no question
that apprentices are
crucial to the
industry's future. They
won't just help us
solve the skills
shortage, they'll help
the industry evolve
and grow”
PANEL
“The future of the life
safety sector relies on
employers passing on
their skills and
knowledge to the next
generation and
supportive companies
are likely to be
rewarded with strong
loyalty and a positive
work ethic”
(from previous page)
Brett Ennals - Cento
Group
This seems to be a perpetual
question and the answer is, as
always, it is extremely
important for the UK security
and fire sector to employ
apprentices to tackle the longterm
skills shortage. If this problem isn’t
addressed the industry will continue to see a
surge in wage demands and engineers
migrating to sub-contracting, as the war for
talent intensifies. There are some excellent
initiatives out there promoting apprentices in
the industry, however, it is everyone’s
responsibility to market the industry to young
people as a career of choice and not just
industry bodies and apprenticeship
campaigners. The biggest problem I can see in
attracting apprentices is the lack of awareness
of the industry in schools and colleges and to
overcome this needs a collective effort.
Dina Mistry - Gent by
Honeywell
The skills shortage within the
life safety industry continues
to cause serious concern and
apprenticeships are certainly
the best way to stem the tide
and encourage high calibre
people to build a career in it.
According to the government, in 2015-16
there were 509,400 apprenticeship starts in
England. This might sound impressive but 54
per cent of all apprenticeship starts were in two
sectors – business, administration and law; and
health, public service and care. This means that
a lot of sectors – life safety included – are not
providing as many apprenticeship opportunities
as are needed to ensure a steady stream of ‘new
blood’.
At the same time as making the industry
more appealing by highlighting the vital role
that life safety technology plays in keeping
people, property and assets safe, employers
must also be encouraged to offer more
apprenticeship opportunities. Employers are
often unwilling to engage apprentices due to a
combination of time, cost and administrative
implications, and this must be addressed if
progress is to be made.
Furthermore, amongst apprentices there is a
significant drop out rate. Some employers
simply don't put enough checks and balances in
place to select the most appropriate person,
and even those that do can later face issues
with getting someone with a desire to learn.
However, often it’s the fault of the employer
who is inept at mentoring the young person in a
motivational way – in which case they may need
to upskill their own workforce in order to
maximise the benefits for both parties.
The future of the life safety sector relies on
employers passing on their skills and
knowledge to the next generation and
supportive companies are likely to be rewarded
with strong loyalty and a positive work ethic.
According to the National Apprenticeship
Service (NAS) after finishing their
apprenticeships the majority of apprentices (85
per cent) will stay in employment, with twothirds
(64 per cent) staying with the same
employer.
Kim Loy - Vanderbilt
I think apprenticeships are
extremely valuable to the
security industry. There are
only a couple of educational
organisations that provide the
training required and,
unfortunately, are not overly
engaging in attempts to attract young
engineers.
I believe that employers need to actively
promote programs that attract young talent and
also follow up with appropriate compensation
schemes that should ensure these engineers
feel comfortable making this their long-term
career.
Security is constantly changing with
technology and therefore provides options for
continued learning and career advancement.
It’s a great industry to be in – and these young
apprentices will be the future mentors for
others joining our industry!
Raising resolutions
Upgrading a camera installation to a
higher resolution has a number of
benefits – not all of them security
related, but we’re still some way off
from 4K being the norm
Over the past few years one of the major
drivers behind the sales of surveillance
cameras has been the rise in potential
resolutions for the end user. This was seen as the
next reason to upgrade once the move from
analogue to IP had taken place at a site. Initially
there was some concern over the cost of
switching to higher resolutions as in some cases a
step to 4K (UHD) meant that new monitors were
required in addition to making sure that the
network infrastructure could cope with the
demands of handling much more data.
Today we have two distinct market areas for
surveillance; the professional market and the DIY.
With the rise in the development of cute little
cameras (many of which are HD) for the home
automation market, users are now more
surrounded by high quality imaging than ever
before – and if you factor in the capabilities of the
camera function on their mobile phones it’s no
surprise that poor quality CCTV footage from a
professionally installed system is not something
that customers expect to see.
However despite the fact that just about all of
the major camera manufacturers now offer 4K
units the average resolution of CCTV cameras in
the UK these days is still below this level. The
installers I speak to generally inform me that the
most common resolution level they are working
on is HD - for either first install or upgrades. The
4K units are great for zooming in, facial
recognition and wide area coverage etc but for the
average customer it is a case of having more HD
cameras to cover a view rather than fewer
cameras at higher res that appears to be the
current norm.
I predicted back in the January edition (in my
thoughts for the coming year feature) that there
will be no need to move beyond 4K for camera
developers in2017, instead they will focus on
better day/night capabilities, H.265 compression,
lag reduction, easier installation features and
analytics innovations including software features
like accurate smoke detection etc rather than
racing on to higher resolutions. The higher the
resolution of the camera the more information can
be gleaned from it, so in applications where
security is not the only function of the cameras,
say in a large shopping area where customer
behaviour, heat mapping and other business tools
can help designers and sales teams, a high
resolution camera is essential. Of course the
same stores would also benefit from the higher
resolutions for recognition, evidence etc –
remember the grainy old images that Crimewatch
used to show us? All in the past, or they could be
at least.
Whilst current demand for 4K from the video
surveillance market remains fairly low as HD is
still marching forward, the benefits for the
security industry are evident. With a resolution of
3840 x 2160, 4K network cameras can deliver
approximately 8 megapixel resolution images.
This upgrade in image quality and resolution will
mean clearer images on a live stream, better
clarity of zoom images and a wider field of vision,
which can drastically improve identification of a
an individual or car number plates, for example.
In addition, 4K used in a 360º panoramic dome
camera can be vital in reducing the number of
CCTV cameras an organisation requires,
significantly impacting overall security costs.
The benefits of 4K for the security industry are
undoubted; however, a number of barriers to
adoption remain, limiting the demand for 4K
network camera capabilities in the security
industry at present. The primary concern most
Key drivers for 4K adoption are
broadcast, consumer TV and media.
4K CCTV is still very much a
growing format
The installers I speak to generally inform me that the most
common resolution level they are working on is HD - for
either first install or upgrades
www.psimagazine.co.uk
CCTV
(from previous page)
often mentioned being the cost of the additional
components required for a business to take full
advantage of a 4K security camera system. To
have a fully-effective 4K surveillance solution in
place, network bandwidth and video storage must
be factored into the buying decision.
Security installers must take into account the
effect multiple 4K cameras will have on the
customer’s enterprise network. Bandwidth and
storage remain significant barriers to adoption as
installers and their customers consider how
enterprise network will be affected by the
addition of bandwidth intensive 4K network
cameras. If not handled correctly, this could
adversely affect the corporate network, slowing
business critical applications. For example, some
manufacturers recommend that organisations
view the live stream in HD, and take advantage of
4K for more granular analysis in order to avoid
bandwidth issues.
4K (UHD) undoubtedly sets a higher standard in video
surveillance but, for now, the buying decision will continue
to centre on cost, image quality and frame rate
4K adoption in the security industry will be
based on market demand, which will increase the
number of 4K products available and inevitably,
lower associated costs. As the costs for 4K
equipment – from monitors and cameras to
storage – are reduced, security professionals and
installers will see a spike in demand for the
technology from end-users.
4K or UHD undoubtedly sets a higher standard
in video surveillance but, for now, the buying
decision will continue to centre on cost, image
quality and frame rate. The security industry is
certainly on the path to adopting 4K as the
industry standard for video surveillance as we will
no doubt see at the trade shows this year.
NEWS EXTRA
Sun, sea and surveillance
Those who attended the Hanwha
Techwin Wisenet conference in
Barcelona recently heard about the
introduction of enhanced warranty
support, a new chipset and much
more. PSI was on the guest list....
he W hotel on the Barcelona seafront was
Tthe grand location for the 2017 Hanwha
Techwin Wisenet conference where over
200 European partners, guests and company
representatives got the manufacturer’s latest
camera and business news during a packed day
in March. The day schedule showed that there
would be a brief company background with
plenty of new surveillance system
announcements and demos thrown in. So how
did it go?
When Hanwha bought up the Techwin part of
Samsung a few years ago we were all a little
perplexed as to who this new company was.
Everyone knew Samsung, but who was Hanwha?
It turned out they were one of those massive
companies that you’ve never heard of (sitting
between Mitsubishi Electric and
GlaxoSmithKline in the Global 500 listing) so
were actually quite a successful outfit despite
the security industry being mostly unaware of
them. At the previous conference the company
announced that they were pushing the brand of
Wisenet while the 2017 conference was all
about the next step. “We Move” is the slogan.
It’s not often that announcements at press
conferences draw gasps and spontaneous
applause but at the conference there was a
point during the presentation by European
Marketing Manager Justin Hollis that raised
considerable audible approval. While discussing
the benefits of the STEP membership program,
which provides partners using Hanwha Techwin
products with advantages and benefits, Justin
announced that with immediate effect, Silver,
Gold and Diamond level STEP partners will
benefit from a five-year warranty program that
covers parts and labour on all of the company’s
IP cameras and NVRs, with the exception of
zoom/focus functionality, pan/tilt motor
assemblies, slip-rings and HDDs, which will
remain at three years. That, said Justin, is a real
benefit that he’d not heard the like of from any
other manufacturer and the audience seemed to
agree.
Explaining the thinking behind the
warranties, MD Bob Hwang said: “We have
decided to reward the loyalty of our STEP
partners by providing them with an additional
competitive edge in the form of improved
warranty terms, which they can offer their enduser
clients.”
The afternoon presentations focused on the
new product ranges from Hanwha plus the
announcement of the new Wisenet 5 chipset.
This job fell to the company’s Head of Product
Management, Tim Biddulph, who took the
audience through the various developments
such as the new Wisenet X series of 26 new
cameras in 2 and 5 megapixel, with H.265
transmission. Tim and the team demonstrated
how the all-new architecture chipset built into
Wisenet X cameras delivers results in a demo
room where delegates were shown how they
and their clients could utilise features including
WDR without blurring, low light performance,
reduced bandwidth requirements by up to 99%
with Wisestream II and gyro sensors for more
accurate stabilisation to combat wind and
vibrations. One of the technologies that drew a
crowd was audio analysis which recognises
critical sounds such as gunshots, explosions,
screams and broken glass.
So what did we take away from the
conference? In the security surveillance market
at the moment there is a perception of a rush to
the bottom, however the level of investment and
development of the Wisenet product ranges and
chipsets show that
Hanwha are far from
taking that route.
Focusing on partner
benefits and support
alongside continual
product enhancement is
the road they are
taking.
And the subject of
branding? It was
mentioned once, briefly.
They are moving on.
The W hotel in Barcelona, the
venue for this year’s Hanwha
Techwin Wisenet conference
“We have decided to
reward the loyalty of
our STEP partners by
providing them with
an additional
competitive edge in
the form of improved
warranty terms”
Net2 now integrates with
GEMOS PSIM platform
Paxton has announced the
integration of its
networked access control
system, Net2, with
GEMOS, a PSIM platform
from ela-soft. The integration
allows access control events
via Net2 to be viewed alongside
other security applications on
one user interface.
Combining more than 750 existing
applications, GEMOS layers the physical
position of each alert and all system devices
onto a site plan. It is able to receive alerts
from more than 500,000 data points in one
installation, and can identify the exact
location of each alarm. Operators can then
instantly activate illumination in the exact
area of concern to aid CCTV image capture.
The integration with Net2 will simplify the
security management of a site,
providing an audit trail of access
control events within the PSIM.
Self-service lock reduces need for on-site staff
Codelocks has announced the expansion of its smart
lock range with the addition of the CL4510. The new
lock utilises NetCode technology which allows
operators to generate and send time sensitive
codes to end users using the K3 Connect App or
NetCode portal. Codelocks also offers an
Application Programming Interface (API) allowing
businesses to integrate the NetCode technology
into their existing systems. By automating code
generation, the need for onsite staff is reduced. In
addition to remote code generation via
smartphone, the CL4510 can also be accessed
using smart cards, as well as allowing permanent
access using the push-button keypad.
Self-service entry offers accessibility outside
normal working hours, helping businesses operate
more efficiently around the clock. The lock can also
be set in Code Free mode at fixed times of the day,
allowing access for cleaning, maintenance or
deliveries. Administrators are able to monitor
access records and usage with audit trail tools.
Meet the installer – myths Q&A
Every month we talk to an NSI Gold accredited installer about life in the business. This month we take
a look back at a selection of answers from previous editions concerning the industry’s biggest myth..
Anthony King – Kings Security Systems
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
I think the biggest myth is that we
think we are qualified because we are
accredited and that we are prepared
for the future, I learnt so much when I
did my CSMP course and putting my
business through ISO27001 and
ISO22301 have been huge challenges
for all the right reasons.
Chrissy Powell – Castle Alarm Securities
What is the industry’s biggest
myth?
I find myself constantly assuring
my customers that not all security
companies are going to sell you an
expensive alarm and tie you into a
long and expensive contract. The
small independent companies, like
myself, are there to help, reassure
and protect their customers for the
best price possible.
Paul Rosenthal – Amthal Fire & Security
What is the industry’s biggest
myth?
Understanding where we are now
to where we are going to be in
‘tomorrow’s world’. In terms of
technology, the world as a whole is
rapidly changing, but also in fire
and security, where we have come
from and where we are going to
be, is literally world’s apart.
I have been in the industry 25
years, which is a long time and
hence seen many changes. It’s exciting to think about what the
next 25 years will bring; we are already seeing significant
advances in home automation and intelligent buildings and this
is a trend that will only continue to become more mainstream.
Security will become integrated with air conditioning, heating,
lighting systems and all controlled by one device. You only have
to look at the advancement of CCTV as one example, from a one
recording device to purely analytical ability to keep track of
communities to show how security is advancing rapidly with the
time and technology available.
On a practical level as well, we have seen that criminals are
becoming more sophisticated in their approach, finding more
digital tools to increase their chance of success. This is why it’s
critical to keep innovating in our industry so that new smart
methods of prevention are launched, and we continue to work
closely with Police forces to keep our customers safe and secure.
Nicky Stokes – ISD Tech
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
That cloud based security solutions are
not secure and inaccessible to most
businesses due to cost. In fact, most
cloud-based infrastructure is ultra-secure
with data encrypted and stored within
highly resilient and fault-tolerant data
centres. As for cost, many IP-based
access control solutions are far more
affordable than traditional access
control. Firstly, remote deployment
reduces install costs and they’re incredibly easy to manage and
maintain, while offering the future-proof flexibility to grow and
adapt. The same is true for cloud-based surveillance,
particularly for a multi-site organisation.
Robert Truesdale – Securi-Guard Fire & Security
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
Even in our fast paced, computer and
smart phone dominated world, people are
still convinced that when an alarm is
activated, it immediately rings in a police
station. I bet even some people reading
this are saying to themselves: 'you mean,
that isn't what happens?' It is true though,
many people have no concept of the key
role an Alarm Receiving Centre plays in the
process as 'middle man'. Having said that, they may all have the
last laugh though. As technology develops we could easily go
back to that kind of direct link again as processes are constantly
being further streamlined.
Robert Moore – Boston
Networks
What is the industry’s biggest
myth?
It would probably be that no
specialist expertise is required to
install and manage devices on an
IP network. The security markets
move to IP adoption and migration
is a result of the advancements in
technology and the realisation of
the multiple associated benefits.
Security cannot solely be managed by Facilities or IT teams as
expertise in both fields is essential when selecting modern
solutions that use the network for connectivity and operation.
Specialist experience of both is imperative and should be
enlisted when designing and deploying these types of systems to
achieve maximum benefits and return on investment.
APPLICATION
Teddington development residents and
visitors protected
Access control technology from Intratone is at the heart of a
security solution implemented by Added Security Technology (AST)
London to protect residents and visitors to the premises in Elton
Close, Teddington.
Elton Close is a five-block development, with a total of 68 flats,
car access, parking and garages. The management required a
complete solution that would encompass controlling the access of
people to the residential buildings and preventing vehicles from
parking illegally in the Close.
People are managed through the use of a fob-based, GSM
Intercom door entry system from Intratone installed alongside five
new and secure aluminium doors – also specified by AST.
Residents are issued with the fobs that are presented to a
proximity reader to grant access, with data from the fob being
recognised (and recorded) by a central management system.
Visitors can enter a flat number into the keypad on the doors entry system at the main entrance door that automatically dials the
appropriate resident’s landline telephone. Should there be no answer, the system will revert to dialling a mobile phone, or other
designated number, where residents can remotely grant or deny access. Using Intratone’s management system, the fobs can be
monitored and cancelled/re-assigned online if a resident moves on. This solution is administered, for Elton Close, by AST.
To prevent the unauthorised parking of vehicles within the
Close, AST also specified a new barrier system using Intratone’s
Intrabox RF Receiver. Residents are issued with transmitters whose
RF signals are received by the management system to open the
barrier. Every time the barrier is raised, the information is reported
to operators to record an overview of the barrier’s activity. The
technology is again remotely programmable through Intratone’s
management system to accommodate changes in vehicles or
residents.
Philip Hornsby, Managing Director of AST London, says:
“Residents feel safer, and we have all-but eradicated the issue of
problem parking.”
Detection and evacuation
system at The Capitol
Following a refurbishment, art deco building The
Capitol is now one of Aberdeen’s most sought after
commercial spaces and life safety products from
Gent by Honeywell have been installed to protect its
occupants.
When it first opened in 1933 The Capitol was a
cinema, before going on to become a theatre, a bar
and nightclub. Located at 431 Union Street in
Aberdeen, the building was among the first of the
British cinemas to be designed in the art deco style.
The venue showed its final film in 1995 and in the
early 2000s was converted into a nightclub, when
the rear section of the building was largely
remodelled.
The nightclub closed in 2009 and the building
was left derelict for over four years until Knight
Property Group and M&G Real Estate initiated a
£30m transformation. Galashiels based SPG Fire &
Security was awarded the fire detection contract by
the building services consulting engineering firm on
the project, TÜV SÜD Wallace Whittle.
SPG Fire & Security specified a fire detection
system based around two Gent Vigilon six loop
control panels that use software to deliver a flexible
system. To maintain the strong identity of the
building, the panel in the reception area was
supplied in a stainless steel finish.
Over 850 devices from Gent’s S-Quad and S-
Cubed ranges have been installed. The combination
of Gent control panels and devices is particularly
suitable due to the complex cause and effect
strategy in place, as the building has a phased
evacuation requirement. The power and length of
loops were also a major factor, as well as ease of
programming for the engineers, particularly since
the cause and effect requirements of the job
changed over the course of the project and became
more intricate.
In addition to the VADs, a Gent Network 8
emergency voice communication system (EVCS) was
installed in the disabled refuge areas. The EVCS
system is connected directly to the WC assistance
alarms and in the event that a cord is pulled, an
alert is immediately activated and help will be on its
way. The Network 8 system comprises of master
handsets located in reception, rear entrance and the
management suite, and there are 23 EVCS
outstation call panels and eleven disabled WC alarm
systems integrated into it.
Enhancing security at
Southgate Shopping Centre
SouthGate Shopping Centre is an outdoor
destination/retail park area located in central
Bath. Opened in 2009 it boasts 96 shops,
restaurants and large underground carparks. As
an extensive space, it is essential that the CCTV
equipment is up to date and effective to reassure
staff and shoppers of their safety.
The Centre was struggling with seven year-old,
out-dated CCTV equipment; 30 cameras were
faulty and had recording issues on DVR, others
were obsolete and the maintenance of the old
system became a major expense. The analogue
cameras underperformed and the solution was
neither upgradeable nor scalable. There was an
New fire systems protect
London restaurants
Two of London’s most exclusive restaurants are
now protected by fire panels from Advanced.
Both The Ivy and Sexy Fish in Berkeley Square,
which are both owned by Caprice Holdings, have
been fitted with MxPro 4 fire panels.
The Ivy has recently been subject to a full
refurbishment, overseen by the Martin Brudnizki
Design Studio. The work included an overhaul of
the building’s fire system by ROC Solutions, who
also installed the system at Sexy Fish, as well as
the existing fire panels in The Club at The Ivy.
Dean O’Brien, Director at ROC Solutions,
urgent need for new and high quality equipment.
Hikvision IP cameras were installed by BWS
Standfast Fire and Security. The company planned
every aspect so that the shoppers were not
disturbed during the implementation process,
which took place during opening hours. It took
one month to install 150 cameras and systems.
The project included the installation of dome
cameras to help the security team to see HD
images from various angles, which is essential for
busy open spaces. The infrared LED night vision
means the camera can reportedly see up to 30
metres in total darkness for clarity of recorded
images.
The PTZ cameras fitted enable the security
team to see everything from all angles and an NVR
stores data and makes information available to
view easily by security staff, which was previously
an issue with the old equipment. The video
management software provides real-time live
view, video recording, remote search and playback
and file backup to meet the needs of the
monitoring team. The convenience and usability of
this software helps SouthGate keep the centre
secure at all times.
When asked what is the biggest difference the
new system has made to the centre Peter
Parkinson, SouthGate’s deputy general manager
says: “Knowing that all of the cameras are fully
working, reliable and provide high quality images
and video is a huge reassurance. Security is of the
utmost importance, so I am pleased I do not have
to worry about the new system.”
commented: “The Ivy project was not only highprofile,
but also logistically challenging, working
around the quick refit schedule and interfacing
with the neighbouring The Ivy Club, which
remained open. In comparison, installation of
the new system at Sexy Fish was not quite so
complex, but still just as vital.
“Careful planning was needed to ensure that
the fire system components did not encroach on
the finishes in each establishment, while the
Sexy Fish system needed to be integrated with
the existing network in Berkeley Square House.”
The Ivy system which is integrated with the
existing EMS radio system in Ivy Club, covers
both the public and private areas of the West
End restaurant, including the dining rooms,
kitchens and other back of house areas, while
the new fire system at Sexy Fish covers all areas
of the Mayfair restaurant.
Partnership provides modern security
solution to match apartment
requirements
Windsor House is a new collection of luxurious apartments for
students in Cardiff. The high-spec apartments are surrounded
by carefully thought out social spaces including an on-site
cinema, games room and VIP bar. To provide a safe and secure
student residence, and complement the design of the
apartments, a modern access control system with integrated
CCTV was required.
Working in partnership with Protectorcomms, Oprema
supplied over 70 HD IP CCTV cameras and a fully networked
Salto access control system with intercom. This provided an
easy to manage platform which allows the use of electronic
keys to access both the external doors to the building as well
as each individual apartment, rather than conventional manual
keys.
This system provides flexibility and easyforward planning
for the client, as cards can be configured to go ‘live’ from a
future specified date, allowing cards to be sent out to tenants
prior to their university start date. Any lost or stolen cards can
also be easily removed from the system via the Salto Space
software, providing security at all times, and negating the
need to have manual locks replaced every time a key goes
missing.
The new security system ensures that Windsor House
benefits from visibility of who is in the building at all times,
with all communal areas covered by CCTV, which reassures the
residents of their safety.
“Oprema assisted us with the design of the IP CCTV system,
taking into consideration the many variables, for example the
bandwidth calculation, storage and the number of remote
viewing connections required,” said Damian O’Brien,
Managing Director, Protectorcomms.
Gareth Williams, Sales Director, Oprema commented: “Our
technical team loves a new challenge, and this project is an
excellent example of our team working closely with an
installer to design and deliver a robust, fit for purpose
solution, resulting in a safe and secure student residence and
a happy end user.”
Lighting and fire systems
installed at trampoline arena
Eaton was selected by the design and building
company behind a trampoline arena to provide
a bespoke mains lighting, emergency lighting
and fire alarm solution. Black Circle Design,
principal contractor and designer for the Go
Air Trampoline Park in Cardiff, opted for an
Eaton mains lighting solution that would
enhance the aesthetic appeal and comfort of
the interior while maximising energy
efficiency. The company also delivered an
emergency lighting scheme and fire alarm
system to help the site owners protect the
safety of staff and visitors, as well as guard
the fabric of the building and its assets.
The 7,315m2 venue, formerly a warehouse,
was extensively renovated and now houses 120 trampolines, six supersize foam pits and a dodge
ball court.
Eaton specialists visited the warehouse at the outset to develop a mains lighting scheme in
conjunction with the client’s design team. Eaton then produced and delivered 45 of its Linergy LEDs
and recommended a separate emergency lighting scheme for the trampoline park.
Working in partnership with Black Circle Design, Eaton designed the fire alarm solution and
supplied its two-wire fire system, BiWire Ultra which allows detectors, sounders and EN54-23
approved visual alarm devices (VADs) to all share the same zone wiring, which can reduce cabling
and labour costs.
Lisa Entwistle-Evans, marketing director at Go Air, said: “The Go Air group is expanding rapidly
across the UK and the plan is to open another five by November. Getting the trampoline parks up and
running requires a multi-partnership approach, working against tight deadlines. The health and
safety of our staff, customers and the premises is our main priority and Eaton’s fire alarm system and
lighting solutions have been important in ensuring Wales’ biggest trampoline park has the
protection it needs.”
Boise Airport upgrades its
security infrastructure
Genetec has announced that Boise Airport (BOI)
has overhauled its security infrastructure with
Genetec Security Center, a unified security
platform that combines access control, video
surveillance, automatic license plate recognition
(ALPR), and other third-party applications. With
the help of CompuNet, an Idaho-based valueadded
reseller (VAR), Boise Airport has now
installed Genetec Security Center to manage
hundreds of cameras, access control points, and
video analytics software from within a single
unified interface.
Boise Airport is an important air transportation
hub for Idaho and the Pacific Northwest. Served
by six airlines that offer daily service to 20
nonstop destinations, the airport welcomes three
million passengers and handles a significant
amount of cargo traffic.
After several years of using a multi-vendor
security infrastructure for access control and
video surveillance, Boise Airport Deputy Director,
Operations and Security, Sarah Demory and her
team started to look into replacing the video
surveillance portion of their security system.
Following an in-depth cost analysis, it soon
became evident that installing an open platform
unified solution for both video surveillance and
access control would be more cost effective than
just replacing the VMS.
"As we analysed our needs and evaluated
various technologies, it quickly became clear that
a unified/condensed security system was the
direction we wanted to go,” said Sarah Demory.
Security Center, which has now been up and
running for a nearly a year, has enabled Boise
Airport to merge the efforts of its access control
and video security teams, allowing them to work
together.
FOCUS: DAY/NIGHT
IP67 cameras for low light condition
monitoring applications
Starlight network series cameras from Dahua are aimed at
low light condition monitoring applications with 0.005Lux/
F1.65 (colour) of light- illumination. The camera features 2-
megapixel, 1/1.9”progressivescan CMOS image sensor for
capturing full colour images, as well as supporting up to a
maximum 50/60fps@1080P encoding. Wide Dynamic Range
(WDR) features 120dB for performance in extremely bright,
dark areas or in backlight.
Dahua in-house Smart Scene Adaptive (SSA) supports
automatic switchover between different scenes, enabling
users to experience the cameras’ low light performance. The
IR distance of DH-SD6AL230F-HNI is up to 500 meters and its
IP67 provides a more high-level of water- and dust-proof
capabilities. www.dahuasecurity.com
360° wide dynamic IP day/night camera
Vanderbilt International’s CVMD4010-IR 360° wide dynamic IP
camera features a detailed 4-Megapixel resolution and is
equipped with a “fisheye” lens for 360° surround view with no
blind spots.
Suited for applications that require coverage of wide, open
areas, this day/night camera features a removable IR-cut filter,
providing images 24 hours a day. Built-in IR LEDs enable the
CVMD4010-IR to provide 360° illumination for clear viewing of
up to 10 meters, even in completely dark environments. The
CVMD4010-IR with its on board IR LEDs features a new mirror
technology to illuminate the environment horizontally, not
vertically as typical 360° cameras. uk.spiap.com
PTZ features ‘Darkbuster’ mode for ultra-low light
Vista’s VK2-HD30LRIR-PM is a PTZ
dome with 500m IR illumination. An
addition to the VK2 range, this
1080p 30:1 optical PTZ pendant
mount camera utilises a 1/1.9”
Sony Exmor CMOS chipset.
Darkbuster mode allows the
camera to operate in ‘ultra-low’
light situations.
For instances where there is no
ambient lighting, the VK2-
HD30LRIR-PM includes integral IR
illumination. This tracks with the
zoom function of the camera
providing optimum illumination
over the zoom range for balanced
images at distances of up to 500m.
For troublesome scenes of view,
the VK2-D30LRIR-PM incorporates
true WDR (120dB). Increased
functionality is also facilitated thanks to four alarm inputs, two-way audio and
the ability to record directly to a Micro SD memory card. The camera has been
designed with a quick fit, quarter turn bayonet adaptor which means it can be
installed into any standard 1.5” NPT threaded bracket. www.vista-cctv.com
IR levels adjust automatically
The Concept Pro CBP6324DNIR-AHD is a
1080p 2.8-12mm varifocal internal dome
camera with 10-15m IR range. This simple to
install camera can transmit 1080p resolution
video footage up to 300m on coax cable.
Additionally, the camera includes an
analogue service video output to simplify
setup and installation and offers Infrared
technology that adjusts the IR levels
dependent on the proximity and movement
of objects, delivering smooth and even
illumination even in the most challenging of
dark environments. www.videcon.co.uk
