Drilling Down to Root Cause<br />

Purpose<br />

To examine gaps in per<strong>for</strong>mance or <br />

expecta-on arer reviewing available data <br />

on a specific topic, issue or purpose. This <br />

can be done in conjunc-on with <strong>KESA</strong> <br />

Accredita)on Rubric reviews, school <br />

improvement data reviews, or when <br />

assessing the effec-veness of <br />

professional learning.<br />

Prepara)on<br />

Materials/Supplies:<br />

• Copies of available, relevant data as it <br />

relates to the topic/issue.<br />

• Copies of <strong>KESA</strong> Rubrics and Standards <strong>for</strong> <br />

Professional Learning as appropriate <strong>for</strong> <br />

above data.<br />

• Large S-cky Poster Pad<br />

• Markers<br />

• S-cky notes<br />

Time: 60 minutes per issue/topic/problem<br />

Learning Designs<br />

Par)cipants<br />

Stakeholders with a working knowledge of <br />

the topic or data that is to be examined.<br />

Groupings: 4-­‐6 people per group with a <br />

facilitator (can be a group member too).<br />

Pre-work: Examine data as it relates to the<br />

topic/issue. Read <strong>KESA</strong> Rubric applicable to <br />

topic/issue, if appropriate.<br />

Direc)ons<br />

Introduc)on:<br />

The purpose of this protocol is to drill down to a root cause in a manner that provokes and<br />

promotes deeper dialogue to determine the WHY behind the gap or deficiency that has been <br />

iden-fied. It is done by using “why” ques-ons as a probe which deepens the dialogue, <br />

reduces the amount of opinion injected into the discussion, and promotes inclusion from all <br />

par-cipants as they work to iden-fy causes that lead to solu-ons. To learn more about Root <br />
