New JMB leader Rajib confesses in targeted killings

One of the Gulshan attack masterminds
Jahangir Alam alias Rajib has
admitted his involvement in several
murders committed by militants in
Gaibandha and nearby districts in
the last couple of years, police say.
District Detective Branch Officerin-Charge
Masudur Rahman said
that the New JMB militant leader had
confessed before the court of Senior
Judicial Magistrate ASM Taskinul
Haque yesterday afternoon.
The case was filed by Gobindaganj
police last year after militants
killed hardware businessman Tarun
Datta on February 8 and show trader
Debesh Chandra Pramanik on
May 25 among other murders and
terror attacks.
Islamic State claimed responsibilities
for the murders through its
Amaq news agency.
Rajib alias Gandhi was placed
on a five-day remand in the case on
March 30 and produced before the
court Wednesday for confessional
statement.
He was arrested by the CTTC unit
from Tangail in January. He then
gave confessional statements in two
murder cases filed with Gaibandha
and one with Bogra police stations.
Rajib said that he had been involved
in the murders of journalist

Dipankar Chakrabarty of Bogra on
October 2, 2004; and Gaibandha’s
village doctor Mahbubur Rahman
on June 2, 2015; and JMB member
Fazle Rabbi on July 19, 2015.
Detectives have also sought the
court’s order to remand him in New
JMB’s Sholakia Eidgah attack of July
7, 2016. •
