Leveraging the Amazon platform has many benets, and it’s a very<br />

eective and simple model. However, one of the things that we didn’t like<br />

about it is that we didn’t own the cus<strong>to</strong>mer, which we felt limited our<br />

growth potential as well as the value of the channel <strong>to</strong> our business.<br />

Being able <strong>to</strong> tap in<strong>to</strong> Amazon’s in-built trac was great, but for the<br />

reasons mentioned above, we wanted more control <strong>to</strong> market our own<br />

products very aggressively in order <strong>to</strong> scale.<br />

So we decided <strong>to</strong> start selling o of Amazon as well, which led us <strong>to</strong> this<br />

new business.<br />

Deciding what <strong>to</strong> sell<br />

Starting a new ecommerce business is full of interesting decisions, not the<br />

least of which is what <strong>to</strong> sell. Since the options were unlimited, we<br />

developed a list of criteria <strong>to</strong> evaluate ideas.<br />
