2 THE LIGHT OF BRITANNIA.

Very early in the history of mankind, a certain
kind of idolatry of an obscene character, indeed, to our
mode of thinking, revolting nature, named Phallic
worship, identical with what is called Linga and Yoni
worship, arose among the nations from the above mode of
regarding the operations of the Creator's creating attributes,
the said attributes being regarded as emanations of
Omnipotence as active and passive from himself, and therefore
the Creator and Ced, his consort, father and mother of
the Sun and Nature, were a spiritual hermaphrodite, or
bi-sexual—both one—hence one of the Orphic hymns
refers to the Creator as--
" Jove is both male and an immortal maid."
Adam's Eve was extracted from himself.
In the Bible both
the Phallic and Linga and Yoni worship are referred to by the
names "whoredom " and "harlotry."
The Prophet Jeremiah
refers to those kinds of worship, or idolatry, by the words
"The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah, the King,
'
Hast thou seen that which back-sliding Israel hath done ?
'She' (Israel as a nation) 'is gone up on every high mountain,
and under every green tree, and there hath played the
harlot."^ There is a deeper meaning than is generally
understood in the following observation of the Prophet
Ezekiel, "My Holy Name shall the House of Israel no
more defile, neither they nor their kings, by their whoredom
nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places."
They have even defiled my Holy Name (\l/) by their al;ominatious
they have committed. * * Now, let them put
away their whoredom and carcases (emblems of the Phallica)
of their kings far away from me, and I will dwell in the
midst of them forever." In the Old Testament, the
expression " Name " and " Word " of God are synonymous
in meaning, and the name Jehovah signifies both to the
