To Believe or to
Belong - that is
the Question!
For decades a debate has continued about how people come to faith in Christ
and become part of His body. Do we have to believe certain truths first and
then become actively involved in the church or do we “try before we buy”,
enjoying the experience of relationships in a community and gradually
coming to accept its core values?
Much of the discussion is sterile. It’s always both, believing and belonging,
belonging and believing. It doesn’t matter so much the order or the process.
What does matter is that both sides of the equation are true in the end. I may
believe in order to belong, I may belong in order to believe.
The reality is that everyone has a unique narrative of how they have come to
faith. Some grow up in the church, others have a ‘Damascus Road’
experience.
There is a significant difference between belonging to the Church as an
institution and being personally connected to the Church as someone who
prays, gives, serves and believes.
In the former, I cannot be a true member without being a true believer in the
Head of the Church. I must confess Him as my personal Lord and Saviour and
be born into his family by the heart transplant work of His Spirit. Being a
Member is always secondary to that personal commitment. But if I am
committed, then part of my commitment to Christ will be worked out in the
context of a community of fellow believers.
In this edition of Life you will find examples of believing (the Craig Dyer
Sunday, the GOfest Missions Event at Moorlands College) and examples of
belonging, (the Church Camping Weekend, Richard and Mavis Wheeler’s
amazing ministry among the Residential Care Homes).
So as you read, why not pray, “Lord, who can I help believe in you and who
can I help belong to the Lansdowne Family ?”
Yours in His Service
Peter Baker | Senior Minister

MOORLANDS COLLEGE
The all-new GOfest is coming to Dorset! GOfest is a partnership of mission
organisations, working with local churches to bring you a dynamic, mission
-focused event which aims to celebrate what God is doing in his world and
inspire our involvement in his mission locally and globally.
Church leaders from three church networks across the region have already
come together with GOfest and Moorlands, to talk about how we can work
together in support of the May event and beyond. We are set for an exciting,
inspiring and challenging day together as we consider global and local
mission issues.
Beyond the day event at Moorlands College, GOfest will seek to serve
churches across the region through ongoing partnerships with a vision to
see whole-life disciples, as part of the whole church reaching the whole
world!
A LONG OBEDIENCE IN THE
SAME DIRECTION
Lansdowne’s Care Home ministry has been in existence for more than 50
years, involving many leaders and helpers. The work provides opportunity
for Christians to get experience in presenting a simple message, leading in
prayer and being part of a team in bringing the Gospel to care home
residents.
Richard and Mavis Wheeler have been involved in this work for 35 years, 12
years leading the ministry, giving their time and effort sacrificially, always
ensuring there has been sufficient team representation going into the
homes.
We would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Richard and Mavis who have
recently handed over the leadership of this ministry to John and Rebecca
Osborne.
We are praising the Lord that one of the Park Manor team had the privilege
recently of leading a 99 year old resident to the Lord - a great encouragement
to Richard and Mavis and a seal on their commitment! Please pray for this
new Christian, that her assurance of salvation will be maintained and for
John and Rebecca as they take on their new responsibility.
If you are following Christ and would like to join a care home team, contact
John and Rebecca or the Church Office.
Craig Dyer
10 and 11 June
‘Equipping Hundreds to Train
Thousands to Rescue Millions …’
Information will shortly be available concerning Craig’s
visit to Lansdowne which will include a Saturday morning seminar which he
says will be an encouragement for the whole church family in personal
evangelism.
In March 2008 Craig completed 13 years as Pastor of Harper Church, an FIEC
church on the south side of Glasgow. He had been called there from Bellshill
Baptist Church, his first pastorate which he took up after graduating from Irish
Baptist College in Belfast in 1989.
During his time at Harper, Craig served as a trustee with India Rural Evangelical
Fellowship (IREF), Care for Scotland's Scottish Advisory Committee, and a
chaplain at the University of Glasgow. When at Harper his involvement in
Christianity Explored Ministries (CEM) deepened, becoming an Advocate in
2006 leading to his present role as Training Director.
His task in essence is to provide evangelism training for gospel hearted
churches in more than 100 countries around the world by developing a network
of trainers. CEM is committed to getting the gospel to the nations via the local
church. Craig summarises his life's work as "Equipping hundreds to train
thousands to rescue millions".
He and his wife Margaret have three daughters. As a family they are still
engaged in the work at Harper Church where Craig serves as Associate Pastor.
Craig brought outstanding Bible ministry from Mark’s gospel at the Child
Evangelism Fellowship European Leadership Forum in Hungary in 2015, taking
the theme of “Jesus – The Master Evangelist”, illustrating the methods and
message of evangelism by showing how Jesus interacted with children and
adults.
Craig will be one of the speakers at the 2018 Bournemouth and Poole
Convention.
