“Making disciples

from our networks to the nations,

declaring the gospel, loving the lost.”

Mission

2020

A month into the New Year, how are you getting

on personally with the implications of our Motto

text?

“I am not ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of

God that brings salvation to everyone who believes”.

I think lots of us can identify with feelings of

shame which can go with speaking and living for

Jesus in a culture where many find the gospel,

frankly, laughable.

Among my email in-box responses, after the

Motto Sermon on January 5 th which covered that

text, several asked if I had been aware of the

entry on that day in Simon Guillebauds’ book of

daily readings, Choose Life. Romans 1:16 was his

chosen verse and people wanted to know if we had

compared notes!

I don’t think we had, but in my preparation for

that message, I had come across the quotation he

used in his brief reflection.

In the end I didn’t use it in my sermon, partly

because no one is sure who is the original author.

No matter. It’s still a powerful statement of what

it means to be unashamed of the gospel. So here it

is, subbed down and unattributed.

“I’m part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I have

the Holy Spirit’s power. The die has been cast. I have

stepped over the line. The decision has been made –

I’m a disciple of his. I won’t look back, let up, slow

down, back up or be still. I will not flinch in the face

of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the enemy,

pander at the pool of popularity or meander in the

maze of mediocrity. I am a disciple of Jesus.”

So as we continue in 2020, this year of Mission,

let’s hear God’s voice in the call to be unashamed

of the gospel.

Featured this month in Life are several articles

which helpfully keep that priority of Mission

before us, in our children and schools work and

in the general life of Lansdowne.

We all need the encouragement to keep

the main thing, the main thing.

Unashamed

Prepare to embark on an adventure like no

other, scouring the mysterious fathoms of

the deep sea. Thrilling discoveries await

in our annual Holiday Club for children.

Our title this year is “Submerged” and

incorporates a theme of underwater.

If you’ve never been before you are in for a

treat! Everyday we will sing new songs, take

part in games and activities, enjoy making

crafts and eating cakes. There’s also a

daily drama not to be missed, and with this

year’s theme we will be diving into some

well-loved bible stories. You don’t need to

be able to swim, but we hope you will enjoy

exploring underwater together.

For parents, the

holiday club means

your children

being left in a safe

caring environment

which they will

find stimulating,

interesting, and fun.

It’s also free, so invite your friends and

neighbours to come along! Children from

Reception to School Year 6 can join us here

at Woodbury Avenue between 10am and

12.30pm daily. And there’s a special event

for the whole family where you are invited

to come to our Grande Finale on Sunday 23 rd

at 11.15am.

Reserve your FREE child’s place now at

Making disciples

from our networks to the

nations, declaring the

“gospel, loving the lost.

In 100 years, those who live and work

around us will be in eternity. Enjoying life

with us around the Throne, or suffering the

eternal death we all deserve. You and I have

been entrusted with the power to make the

difference!

For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

because it is the power of God that

brings salvation to everyone who

believes: first to the Jew, then to the

Gentile.

Romans 1:16

We want to make the most of 2020 to spur

each other on to live ‘Unashamed!’

This won’t be a year of events, but a year

to change our culture. To orient our life

together more fully towards making

disciples by sharing our lives and this

powerful gospel word.

Everyone can be involved. Four simple steps

for each of us will mean one giant leap for

the kingdom. The maths is simple 1+1=1000.

With around 500 followers of Jesus in the

Lansdowne family, then him using each of

us to lead someone to follow him will mean

1000 in his kingdom. Just think!

4 small steps, one giant leap - Look,

Engage, Add, Pray – LEAP!

Look

– see what God’s doing and build on it

Let’s share stories of all that God is doing

through our relationships and in our groups

as we encourage everyone to build on this

foundation. We will establish a natural

rhythm that builds through each term. At

the start we’ll encourage everyone to build

our relationships for Christ. Every group will

then endeavour to reach out together in the

middle. Then there will be a small number

of key central events to invite people to.

Starting with the Holiday Club in February

and the Mark Drama at Easter, we’ll then

make most of the summer including a beach

baptism, before hosting Ravi Zacharias

(a well known Christian apologist) in

November.

Engage

- all who are seeking with our lives and the

gospel

There’ll be many opportunities to do this

starting with Engage courses like CE and

Alpha at the start of each term. Who might

you engage this year?

Add

- something we’ve not yet done

Is there something new you could try? Our

‘Go Tell Team’ will be investigating ways

to share Christ on the streets. Perhaps

you could join them? Do you have a skill

that might draw people together? Come

and discuss how this might be used to

introduce people to the gospel. ‘Come See

Courses’ like these could be run anywhere,

at anytime and may see many hearing the

gospel among us.

Pray

- asking God to open doors and make

disciples

In addition to our prayer emphasis weeks

we aim to provide as many opportunities

as possible to get everyone praying. So if

you’re already reaching out, tell us, and

we’ll share it for prayer.

We all feel timid and inadequate. But

encouraging each other to take four small

steps will open the door for God to take us

on one great leap!

Mission

2020

In the 6 weeks leading up to Christmas,

the PACE Trust (Programme for Applied

Christian Education) joined with churches

from around Bournemouth, Poole and

Christchurch to share the good news of

Jesus with thousands of local secondary

school kids using the GSUS Live bus.

The bus is a mobile interactive classroom

on a large lorry. It seats 30 students and

guides them through a lesson helping them

understand who Jesus is and why he came.

For it's final week in Bournemouth the bus

was parked at The Bishop of Winchester

Academy just about - it struggled to get into

the car park!). As I help to lead the PACE

team working in TBOWA, I had the pleasure

of helping out on the bus during the week.

In just one week over 400 teenagers were

able to engage with who Jesus is. Working

regularly in TBOWA I get to see firsthand

how open these young people are to

discussing issues of faith, but this week was

something different. The lesson combined

with expert deliverer, Dave Pegg (PACE

Schools Work Leader), had a great knack

of helping the young people open up with

some big questions and great discussions

on everything Christian.

The week ended with a gig by Christian

artist Chip Kendall which thousands of

young people were invited to over the 6

weeks, more than a hundred attended and a

number reported making a commitment to

Christ that evening and are being followed

up by local churches.

You can find out more about the work of

PACE and watch some reports from GSUS
