Porters hold on to top LWC 2-1 in conference opener
Erin Redmond, Assistant Editor
As far as Justin Elliott was concerned,
a brand new season started
Thursday, April 20.
The 21 wins the Porter and his
squad had amassed went out the
window the moment the ball was
served in the conference opener
against Lincoln-Way Central. And
with the game on the line, Elliott
came up with a late, game-changing
block, giving the Porters the momentum
they needed to pull out the
Set 3 victory to win 2-1 over the
Knights at LTHS’s Central Campus.
Lockport won 23-25, 25-18, 25-
23 to record its 20th straight win.
“It was tough game, but we needed
to win this one so we could be
1-0 in conference. We forgot about
our 21-1 record because we knew
it was a fresh start for conference,”
said Elliott, who had nine kills and
two blocks for Lockport. “I knew
Lockport hadn’t won a varsity conference
[game yet], so we wanted to
get that win tonight. I was like, ‘Let
me do what I need to do so the team
gets there.’”
Elliott’s Set 3 block gave Lockport
a 22-21 lead, but Central’s Jack
Yurkanin kept it interesting, smashing
a perfectly placed kill to opposite
side line to tie the set at 22-all.
The Porters capitalized on a Central
error, and Anthony Pfeiffer took it
from there. The junior opposite hitter
won a joust at the net and sealed
the win by smashing the ball to a
hole in the center court.
Pfeiffer led the team with a double-double,
recording 10 kills and
15 assists.
“Any Lincoln-Way school is going
to be tough,” Porters coach Nick
Mraz said. “Although we’ve been
doing well and getting wins, they’ve
had a lot of challenges where it’s
been back-and-forth, rollercoastertype
stuff. We’ve been prepared for
it, so I knew they wouldn’t fold, but
I’m just happy to come out on top.”
Lockport jumped out to a 10-4
lead in Set 1 before Central found
its groove. The Knights scored
back-to-back points on a Yurkanin
kill and Joe Claffy block and padded
their lead thanks to Porter errors.
LWC scored 10 straight to take
a 13-10 lead, from which Lockport
never recovered. Elliott kept things
interesting, scoring three kills down
the stretch, including a smash to
keep the Porters in the game at 23-
24. Yurkanin notched the match
point on next play, tipping the ball
past Lockport blockers.
Set 2 was much the same, as
both teams traded leads. Back-toback
kills from Noah Speechley
and Pfeiffer and a pair of Central
errors helped the Porters pull away
for good at 17-13. Lockport upped
the pressure at the net, denying the
Knights with two big blocks from
Matt Dalton and another from Elliott
late to close out the set.
“Lockport’s a great team. We just
came out firing, won that first set.
Down the stretch, we just weren’t
tough enough and couldn’t finish,”
Central captain William Kickert
said. “... We just made mistakes
down the stretch, and that really
hurt us. Overall, I think we played
really well. It was two points [that
made the difference] in the end.”
Yurkanin led the Knights with
nine kills and an ace. Kickert, Matt
Von Holst and Mason Davis all had
two kills in the contest. Kickert also
recorded an ace.
The Knights captain said his team
will shake off their first conference
loss, and added cohesiveness is crucial
moving forward.
“[We need to work on] just playing
together and our toughness, just
finishing games,” Kickert said.
As for the Porters, Mraz said improving
the serve-receive and sealing
up seams at the net will be his
team’s focus as it charges towards
the postseason.
“We talked about it, and we’re not
only playing for our conference but
our sectional,” Mraz said. “Yeah,
we want to win conference, but it’s
the playoffs at the end of the year
we’re preparing for. Getting this
win and moving forward is huge.”
