Northampton Local magazine. 

As well as our regular quizzes, this edition 

features a selection of articles which we 

hope you find interesting and useful. 

Among these are details of a new infection 

monitoring training programme which is 

being piloted by Northampton Carers 

(details on page 20). 

The Royal Yachting Association are also 

‘pushing the boat out’ between 13 th & 21 st 

May by encouraging you to try something 

different; sailing and windsurfing at one of 

their nationwide events (page 29). 

In addition, we also welcome a host of new

MERRY MONTH OF MAY 

I know not where the author 

lived, who quoted merry month 

of May. So often cold and drab 

and damp, as we wait for 

warmer summer way. 

The daffodils we grew with 

pride, golden blooms we watch 

them pass. Leaving untidy 

leaves we cannot touch, like 

sprawling clumps of uncut grass. 

Spring flowers to summer now 

succumb, their gentle beauty 

now all gone. For colour now to 

shrubs we turn, as many 

different hues they don. 

Now as we think the weather’s 

right, for bedding plants on 

sunny day. The sharp night 

frost reminds us well, it’s a 

dangerous game to play.

SO ANYONE CAN GO SAILING IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE THIS MAY? 

Want to try something completely different this year? Something to get the air in your 

lungs, that will let you clear your mind, give your body a bit of a work out and that you 

can do with your whole family if you wish? Sailing could be your answer. 

Sailing? In Northamptonshire? Yes, you did read that right! And for the nine days from 

Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 May you can try sailing and windsurfing for free or low cost 

across the county with RYA Push The Boat Out 2017. RYA Push The Boat Out is all about 

getting people afloat who might never have known there was even the chance to try 

sailing near them. Over 20,000 people regularly go down to their local sailing club every 

month across the Midlands, sailing small sailboats or windsurfing on the region’s 

reservoirs, lakes and rivers and just loving the buzz of being on the water. You could be 

one of them. “Whatever you think about sailing, Push The Boat Out will change your 

mind,” Gareth Brookes, RYA Midlands Regional Development Officer, explains. “You will 

be able to get out on the water with experienced sailors that you will find to be exactly 

like you in a boat which is suitable for you, whatever your age, ability or experience. 

That is why sailing is one of the most inclusive sports around. You might want a leisurely 

sail with your family, to experience something a bit more high octane or just potter 

about with your partner, and you do can all of this.” Last year there were no fewer than 

six Push The Boat Out events in Northamptonshire with a similar number expected this

Spotlight 

In this edition the spotlight falls on Charlie Jones, 

14 year old founder of Pure Clothing Apparel 

What first got you interested in fashion and trends? Well, from a young age – maybe about 9 or 10 – I 

started getting interested in the brands and styles of clothing I wore. Before that, my mum would shop for 

me! I went through the initial stages of starting to become conscious of what I wore and what I looked like. 

Clothing and fashion just gripped me. I tried my best to keep up with the latest trends and wear the most 

‘current’ brands! My love of sports also meant that I wore more sporty brands as well as the everyday casual 

stuff. Things progressed as I got older. Now I’m even more into the big expensive brands! I guess it’s a 

teenage thing! 

What first inspired you to take the plunge to becoming an Entrepreneur and starting your own business and 

brand? I originally came up with the idea when I was 11. I adopted the word ‘pure’ myself and changed the 

meaning to mean ‘cool/good’. Something positive. After that became my trademark, I wanted to do 

something with the word. I loved the word itself along with what it really meant and stood for. The main 

reason behind me doing it was simply just because I always wanted to wear clothes designed by myself – my 

own brand. I’d often sketch football kits and clothing items. I loved designing. I was fascinated by the big, 

international, multi-million dollar brands. I wanted to replicate them in my own way! So the main reason was 

just for me, I wanted to wear my own brand. The other contributors were factors like my keen interest in 

business. Businesses attracted me: you can decide how they work, you can do something you enjoy, and the 

reward you get out of them depends on how you work. Plus, I saw it a great way to make a bit of money 

while doing something I’ve always wanted to do at the same time! 

What do you enjoy most about what you do? The most enjoyable part of it all is definitely the satisfaction of 

seeing others wearing it. From my brother, to my friends, to all of my other customers. It’s great to know 

that there are people out there that really like your product. I love getting feedback from customers. It’s 

always great when you’re told good, positive things about what you’re doing and your brand in general. As 

well as the constructive criticism: I encourage any feedback because it lets me know exactly how the 

consumers feel about the product. What’s good about it, what they don’t like, what could be changed etc. 

Pride takes over me when I see others wearing and enjoying my clothing. 

What ambitions do you have for the future? Well, one day I’d love to branch this out across the whole of the 

UK. I’d love for it to become more popular and be recognised nationwide. I really want to release loads more 

varieties of clothing. Hopefully, I can sustain the business and get a bit of recognition ad publicity to expand it 

outside of Northampton. In the future, I’d also like to be able to deliver and sell abroad. My main goal is to 

just keep it going and slowly gain popularity. One day, I’d love to stock my clothes at a few retailers or even 

have my own shop! Carrying this business on into the future would be great! 



What were the biggest obstacles that you had to overcome? The biggest obstacle is probably money. Since I 

am still so young and inexperienced, I’ve been working within a very low budget. Every single penny of the 

money invested into my business has come from me alone so I’m risking a lot. But I believe it’s a risk worth 

taking. I hope to slowly build up money so I can reinvest a lot back into the brand. It’s been very difficult to 

promote the business on such a budget. I struggle to expose my brand to the audience I want to show it too. 

But, eventually, with effort and time, I’m doing all I can to get the name out there. Featuring in newspapers 

and magazines, getting support from my school, and using social media is definitely generating some outside 

interest however. 

Who inspires you and why? All the big clothing brands and entrepreneurs that started out young. Clothing 

brands such as Ralph Lauren, Nike, Armani, Adidas, Supreme, Hype – just to name a small handful – inspired 

me to create my own brand. We’ve all seen how successful these have all become and I hope to replicate 

that. Entrepreneurs such as Lord Sugar, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Tim Cook, James Dyson were a huge 

driving force. They all had a dream, and they all made that dream a reality. And look what they’ve all 

achieved today. Even the small, underrated, hidden businesses and entrepreneurs deserve so much credit 

for the work they do. I strongly believe that I you want something; you’ve got to go and do something about 

it. Make it happen. 

How do your family and friends feel about what you do? At first, my friends always thought I was joking. 

Some would laugh and twist my arm about the whole thing. Lots of people doubted me. None of them 

expected me to ever do it seriously! But when I did start doing it seriously, over time, they’ve gained a lot of 

respect for me. The vast majority have been incredibly supportive and encouraging. There’s still the odd few 

doubters amongst my friendship groups but you’ve got to learn to ignore them and do what you want to do. 

My school have always been there for me and are very proud of what I’m doing. Teachers and staff around 

have been really pleasantly surprised at everything I’ve done and have shown lots of enthusiasm towards my 

venture. My family have stuck by me the whole time too! I remember first coming up with the whole idea 

with my dad in a restaurant! My mum and dad have dedicated a lot of their time to helping me with it and 

are fully for the whole thing. My grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. have also shown a keen interest in the 

brand – especially considering a lot of my family have been involved in businesses of their own. 

Where do you see yourself in 3 years’ time? I’d like to be optimistic and hope that my brand would’ve took 

off and gained lots of popularity. I imagine I’d have a stockist/s, a fully customised website of my own, and 

lots more stock. Hopefully I’ll be turning over a decent amount and selling a lot of products nationwide. I’d 

like to think it’d be often recognised and even build up a reputation of my own. 

What would you like to say to anyone of a similar age who have similar ambitions to start their own business? 

Just go for it. That’s the great thing about businesses: anybody can start one. If you have something you 

enjoy or you’ve come up with a great new idea, go ahead and begin a business. It’s a great way of doing what 

you like to do, earning a decent amount of money and learning valuable life skills for the future. I’d definitely 

encourage more teenagers to become entrepreneurs. I hope that I can inspire others to do this. I am proof 

that if you’ve got a small, ambitious, ‘unrealistic’ idea, you can easily make it into a beneficial, successful, 

realistic idea!

Do I wake or sleep? For many years have flown as a tribute to John Keats 

Since last I drank the sound of your sweet voice, 

To hear your warbling song on breezes blown 

When sitting in verdurous gloom was fain my choice. 

To listen to you sobbed, outgoing song 

Could almost cure the fervour's of this troubled world, 

Pray it could put to right the numbing wrongs 

With lessons from your mildness now unfurled. 

The precept that you teach should now be told 

Humility in dress, no fancy gown, 

That such a tiny bird our awe could hold 

With feathers seen so plain as russet brown. 

One hundred and ninety years have passed 

Gone are the woodland glades where I would roam 

They’ve disappeared as progresses vile blast 

Has eaten up the humble wildlife’s home. 

Voices from afar call to my soul, where lies these rural woods and quiet glades? 

Where nightingales performed their canticle, where music from my passions 

numbly fades. 

O sing once more for me from darkling wood, where deathly silence caresses 

now my mind, no wood nymph winging through the swaying leaves, or hidden 

nest among the brambles do I find. 

Perhaps as years go past they will return, to hold an audience engrossed once 

more, I plead that there will be some habitat, to bring this wandering migrant to 

our shores. 

So as again two hundred years will pass, and someone walking through a copse 

as looms twilight, will stop in wonderment and gasp, at the awe inspiring music 

of the night. 

Then all who once shared this apostles song, can rest in deaths sweet silence, 

knowing that a bird that was not ever born to die will live forever as an unbowed 

diplomat; and I will know in song strewn arbours now my spirits lie.

Helen Crawford, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Northamptonshire 

Unite against Dementia this Spring 

Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s 

biggest killer and could affect us all. 

Someone develops dementia every three 

minutes and too many are facing it alone, 

without adequate support. We urgently 

need to find a cure, improve care and 

offer help and understanding for people 

affected. Over the next couple of months 

we’ve got big plans to raise awareness and 

vital funds to support the 850,000 people 

in the UK with dementia, which includes 

8000 people in Northamptonshire. 

During April, we’ll be focussing on the 

scale of dementia, which continues to 

grow. It is predicted that by 2021, one 

million of us will have dementia, and two 

million by 2051. 

Dementia doesn’t care how old you are. 

It’s caused by diseases of the brain so it’s 

not an inevitable part of ageing. In fact, 

more than 40,000 people with dementia 

in the UK are under 65. In May, we want 

everyone across Northamptonshire to 

take action and unite against dementia by 

taking part in Dementia Awareness Week 

(14-20 May). Events will be held across 

the county and region. 

A few weeks later we’ll be urging everyone 

to come together and unite against 

dementia by taking part in Cupcake Day (15 

June). Whether you’re a baking pro or a 

shop bought lover, we want you to take part 

in Cupcake Day and raise money to support 

the fight against dementia. 

Last year, dedicated Cupcakers around the 

country united to raise a mighty £330,000 

against dementia. That’s more than enough 

to fund 11 PhD researchers for a year, giving 

them the opportunity to undertake vital, 

potentially lifesaving work. Locally, we had 

nearly 350 people sign up in the 

Northampton postcode area. 

This year we want to raise even more. By 

joining together for Cupcake Day 2017, 

you’ll not only be helping to create a better 

world for people affected by dementia 

today, but also to find a cure for tomorrow.

Chocolate Chip 'Nice' Cream 

On a warm day there is no better way to cool down than 

with a delicious ice-cream. But there is a better way … if 

you want something sugar free, gluten free and guilt free 

… this 'nice-cream’ is about to change your world. The 

sweetness of the bananas balances out the bitterness of 

the cacao powder and dark chocolate chips. Which 

means you don't need to add anything else for this to be 

a huge hit with the whole family.

How to Choose your Olive Tree 

You want to add some Mediterranean 

glamour to your garden, and have settled 

on an olive tree to do just that. But now 

you’re left with the tough decision of 

picking the right one for your garden! 

Thankfully, olive tree experts Olive Grove 

Oundle have shared their advice. 

Research your tree 

When purchasing your tree, you need to know what type of tree you are after. Younger 

trees often have a straighter trunk and a smoother bark, while older trees have a gnarled 

bark with unique markings. Before you make your purchase, it’s worth looking in detail at 

the tree you have chosen. Younger trees are often pruned into a lollipop style shape so 

will be easy to spot from their older counterparts. It’s always best to look at your tree in 

person before you click buy online! 

Don’t rush 

We get it. You’re excited to add an olive tree to your garden, but there’s no need to rush 

into a purchase. Take your time when choosing your tree and remember that many olive 

trees are often exceptionally large. Therefore, you will need to take into account how you 

will transport your tree home (delivery can be costly depending on your location and size 

of tree). 

The right tree for your garden 

Where you position your tree, may be where it stays forever. So, it’s best to ensure that 

you’ve really thought about where you want your tree to go in your garden. After all, it’s 

likely to be a decision for life. You’ll also want to consider how the conditions of that 

position will fare on your tree. Although olive trees are very hard, they require the 

sunniest spot in your garden which also provides suitable wind protection. While they can 

withstand temperatures of -10°C, if combined with a cold wind they can struggle to 

survive.

Remember maintenance 

Lastly, you’ll want to ensure that you have 

the maintenance tools to hand once you 

have your tree at home. Luckily, olive trees 

are extremely self-sufficient and require 

little attention - often requiring no food 

(unless you want to grow fruit from it) and 

once planted little water. Although you will 

need to check that the soil doesn’t become 

dry throughout the year - particularly in the 

winter months if you want to produce fruit. 

In terms of pruning, maintenance is 

minimal. Again however, if you plan on 

growing fruit, then you will need to prune 

you tree in late spring or early summer 

before the tree has flowered. When 

pruning your tree you will need to remove 

dead, diseased or dying branches - thinning 

out branches to allow light to reach the 

centre of your tree. 

Check you have enough space 

While you may look at your tree when you 

purchase it and struggle to imagine just how 

large it will get, it’s important to factor this 

in when you plat your tree. Over time, the 

trunk will expand so you will want to ensure 

that there is enough room surrounding your 

tree for it to grow. You are able to contain 

your olive tree in a pot, and transfer it into a 

larger pot over time. Moving an olive tree 

which has been planted in the ground can 

be tricky.
