News from Lindsay Evesham
Tesco community champion
My role is as an ambassador for
Tesco Evesham to bring genuine
benefits to the local community.
Within this remit I try to work varied
community groups offering guidance
and support where requested. A lot
of people think it is just handing out
raffle prizes but I don't have a huge
budget. I do however try to spend
70% of my time being active in the
community.
In the past six months we have
supported: The Evesham carnival,
Cyclefest, Mad Hatters Tea Party,
Hampton Flower show, Evesham
Dementia Action Alliance (EDAA),
St Richard's Hospice, Relay 4 Life,
Help for Heroes, Local village fetes
and schools. Like the Scarecrow
Festival this year.
For the past three years Tesco has
been working in partnership with
the British Heart Foundation and
Diabetes UK and have raised in
excess of £10,000 in the Evesham
area. I am also a very active member
of the EDAA, sitting on the steering
committee as well as the events and
dementia friends & meetings.
As a dementia friends champion I,
along with many others in Evesham
and the surrounding villages, can
offer sessions on becoming a
dementia friend enabling people to
live well with dementia. Evesham,
along with everywhere else,
is working towards becoming
dementia friendly (as there is always
room for improvement).
Tesco is very proud to have a relaxed
lane which allows those customers
who want or need more time at the
tills the space they require. I love to
get out into the community meeting
and hopefully helping people. Trying
to promote groups such as: Garage
Art Group in Crown Court Yard,
Simple Minds at Wallace House and
Evesham Mental Health Support
group in Church St.
Bags of Help
Bags of Help is our exciting community
grant scheme which funds thousands of
projects across the UK.
Bredon Hill Middle School Newt Rescue Project,
funded by Bags of Help.

Within Tesco Evesham we also have
our Bags of Help grant scheme
where community groups can get
between £1000 - £4000 to help their
group with a project. Tesco has in the
past help fund: outside playgrounds,
equipment for sports clubs, local
events and Christmas meals for the
homeless.
In recent months we have been
trying to raise the profile of St
Richard Hospice in our area by
holding a fashion show (more to
come) and the retail challenge
cup between Morrisons and
Tesco colleagues raising almost
£3,000. St Richards is for anyone
needing support with end of life care
within Worcestershire.
Tesco is also committed to no
edible food going to waste. Food
Connection is where we offer food
at the end of the day to local groups
such as the Adventure playground.
On average we supply 350-400 free
meals per week from this iniative
but we still have slots available for
after schools, organisations etc who
would be interested in this project.
In the near future we will hopefully
be involved in a Christmas Fashion
show, Dementia Friendly Christmas
sing a long and a nationwide food
bank collection.

Did Ninja and
Samurai
really exist?
According to the internationally
famous martial artist Neil R. Hall,
who lives in the Vale and teaches at
the big martial arts school, LCTKD,
the Ninja were more or less made
up - a bit like a 1930's version of the
Jedi - but the Samurai certainly did
exist.
They were Japan’s warrior elite, and
they were around for hundreds of
years, right up to 1868.
Learn a life skill
Drowning is still one of the most
common causes of accidental death
in children, so being able to swim is
an essential life-saving skill!
Swimming is lots of fun for people of
all ages and children especially love
getting in the water and enjoying
themselves.

What was your favourite subject
at school? My favourite subjects at
school were P.E and History. I loved
every aspect of P.E (except anything
that involved maps and trekking
remote parts of the country) and I
still absolutely love History today!.
Name 2 things you love about your
job. I love that every day is so
different, I certainly never get bored
in my job. I also love the relationships
you build with your class and how,
over the year, you get to know how
they learn best and what motivates
them.
What did you want to be when you
were a kid? When I was younger I
really wanted to be a Butlins red coat
or a Policewoman. Those dreams
were scuppered when I realised I
couldn't sing and I was too scared of
the dark (or of most things really) to
be a Policewoman.
What did you have for dinner last
night? Last night I ate some super
noodles for dinner. We had a big,
fancy lunch before leaving Scotland
so I only needed a snack for tea.
Who is your hero?
I have lots of heroes and inspirations
(most involve Disney princesses)
but one of my massive inspirations
is Jessica Ennis-Hill. She is so
hardworking, determined and
physically able
and went back to Athletics to win
Olympic Gold only months after
having her son.
If you could have super powers,
what would they be?
If I could have any super power it
would definitely be to fly. This may
sound bizarre as I am actually scared
of flying however I always wished
I could fly since I watched Hook on
repeat during my childhood.

Check
your
blinds...
When I first had children, I was
really concerned that the windows
in their bedroom could be opened
wide. This was fixed very simply
by fitting window stops that
prevented them opening wide
enough to fall out if they climbed
onto the window ledge.
The other issue was looped cords
on blinds. Having personally known
someone who lost a child through
strangulation due to a cord I knew
it was very important to change
them to make sure they were safe.
Deaths have occurred mainly in
18 to 36 month old children and
mainly in the bedroom.
The law requires that all new blinds
including roller, pleated, roman,
vertical and venetian blinds are
‘safe by design’.
This means that safety device must
be installed at the point of the
manufacture. These either allow
you to store the cord(s) out of
reach or they break under pressure
or tension the cord.
Professional installers must fit
these devices. If you have fitted
blinds yourself you should follow
the instructions supplied with the
product and make sure you fit any
safety device.
So; don’t use cords if possible, keep
cords short, keep up high, don’t put
beds or cots near windows, don’t
put drawstring bags over the end of
the cot and as usual STAY SAFE.

Autumn
Warmer
Chicken, Cider and vegetable
casserole
This easy recipe makes a double portion
pop half in the freezer and enjoy the
other half for dinner.
A real Autumn dinner for the family.
Prep. time 10 minutes - Cooking time 50 mins - For 4
Ingredients & Method
1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into
small chunks
500g small new potatoes, halved
4 leeks, finely sliced
300ml dry cider, plus an extra glug
750ml chicken stock
2 British free-range skinless boneless
chicken thighs
2 tbsp wholegrain mustard
80g crème fraîche
Bunch fresh flatleaf parsley, roughly
chopped (optional)
Method
1. Heat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/
gas 5. Heat some oil in a large deep
casserole with a lid.
Add the vegetables and fry for 8-10
minutes over a medium-high heat to
colour.
2. Add the cider, turn up the heat to
high, then reduce for 2-3 minutes. Add
the stock, chicken thighs and mustard.
Put the lid on and cook in the oven
for 40-50 minutes until the chicken is
cooked through and tender. Add an
extra glug of cider, stir in the crème
fraîche and season.
3. Serve half the casserole, scattered
with the freshly chopped parsley.
