you could go sailing or windsurfing on your doorstep, now’s the time to give it a go. So many people<br />
still don’t realise it is possible to sail in the Midlands and that you don’t even need to own a boat as<br />
clubs and centres have ones to borrow or hire.<br />
“Once you’ve learned the ropes, you can sail<br />
on your own or with your partner, friends or<br />
kids in dinghies or big boats, inland or on the<br />
coast. You can enjoy watersports and flotilla<br />
holidays overseas too. Whatever experience<br />
you’re after, sailing can offer it as there is<br />
always something new to discover. And after<br />
you’ve given your mind and body an on-thewater<br />
workout, nothing beats having a drink by<br />
the water on warm summer evenings." In 2017<br />
a whopping 31,000 people ‘pushed the boat<br />
out’ at over 500 sailing and windsurfing taster<br />
sessions across the UK. At least six venues across <strong>Northampton</strong>shire are hosting Push The Boat<br />
Out events throughout May. All kit and safety equipment is provided so just bring a pair of old<br />
trainers you don’t mind getting wet and your sense of fun. Refreshments will be available with a<br />
host of shoreside activities and entertainment to enjoy too.<br />

The Advanced Driver Course<br />
<strong>Northampton</strong> Advanced Motorists are one of around 200<br />
voluntary groups across the UK affiliated to IAM<br />
Roadsmart - the country’s leading road safety charity.<br />
The course is provided by IAM Roadsmart for a one off,<br />
all-inclusive price of £149. We deliver the practical part<br />
of the advanced driver course providing members of the<br />
public with effective post driving test training. The course<br />
will raise your driving skills to advanced test standard<br />
and build on your existing experience. It will help those<br />
who experience difficulty with certain roads and<br />
situations. Things they may actively avoid. Motorways for<br />
example, or multi-lane roundabouts, both commonly<br />
present problems for some people. Those who undertake<br />
the course find it gives them much greater driving<br />
confidence. They often comment on just how much they<br />
have learned about driving. Things they were previously<br />
unaware of - even with many years of driving<br />
experience. Come along for a free assessment and find<br />

Four ways to get involved in <strong>Northampton</strong><br />
Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Awareness Week has been renamed as<br />
Dementia Action Week. It takes place from 21-27 May 2018 and<br />
Alzheimer’s Society is calling on everyone in <strong>Northampton</strong> to unite today<br />
and plan actions, big or small, to make a huge difference to people<br />
affected by dementia. There are more 8000 living with dementia in<br />
<strong>Northampton</strong>shire and too many face the condition alone without<br />
adequate support. Here are four ways you can get involved in 2018:<br />

In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes and almost<br />
everyone knows someone whose life has been affected. There hasn’t been a<br />
new drug for dementia in 15 years. But since 2013, the number of clinical trials<br />
for Alzheimer’s drugs has doubled. Alzheimer’s Society will continue to drive<br />
forward research for effective treatments for dementia and – ultimately – a<br />

Where misty dreams of ages past whisper through the trees and silent<br />
footprints through the grass parting slowly in the breeze.<br />
Where memories in bushes hang among the bramble and the haws, where<br />
pleasantly the bullfinch sang above the black crow caw’s.<br />
Where red kite’s wheel on silent wings a pair of buzzards mewing sounds and<br />
to grazing deer a strange scent brings then across the field it bounds.<br />
Pine trees sway in the gusting wind, trunks groan and creak as though in<br />
pain. Squirrels search for hidden nuts among the wild, shrubby terrain<br />
Panoramic views over soft green valleys, clouds scud across an angry sky.<br />
A chaffinch through the trees now hurries, a Blackbird gives a warning cry.<br />
Mysterious is the dark wood’s gloom where strange sounds float on breezes<br />
blown. Clinging bramble thorns show green where the nightingales will<br />
make their home.<br />
And Blackcaps in the trees now sing, their voice among branches echo<br />
through an orchestra of astounding sounds while beneath lies a carpet laid of<br />
blue.<br />
The thrush repeats his final song before the horizon hides the sun. It burns<br />
between the darkening branches on the trunks the flickering sunbeams flung.<br />
So the woodland now will fall asleep until the creatures of the night appear.<br />
The fox the badger cautiously rise together with the fallow and muntjack<br />
deer.<br />
This is just like an enchanted world an owl<br />
screeches as the wood we leave. We go back<br />
to where noise is dominant and in magic now I<br />
can believe.<br />

with diabetes, and those at<br />
risk of Type 2, are supported<br />
to choose the right foods for<br />
them to improve their<br />
health and quality of life.<br />

That’s why we have issued<br />
new Diabetes UK nutrition<br />
guidelines for healthcare<br />
professionals. For the first<br />
time, the guidelines show<br />
how people with Type 2 diabetes might be able to achieve remission. Eating certain foods<br />
such as vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, fish, nuts and pulses can also help manage blood<br />
glucose levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in people with both Type 1 and<br />
Type 2 diabetes, as well as reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.<br />
These foods are usually associated with the Mediterranean-style diet, but can be adapted<br />
to cultural and personal preferences. Eating less red and processed meat, refined<br />
carbohydrates - such as white bread and rice - and drinking fewer sugar sweetened drinks,<br />
is also recommended.<br />
Being active daily and achieving at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week<br />
through a variety of exercise can help people with diabetes lead healthy lives, and prevent<br />
the onset of Type 2 diabetes for those at risk.<br />
We hope that the new guidelines will help people enjoy food, while making healthy choices<br />
and being more active.<br />

We would like to share with you a wonderful poem written by Chelsea, a young<br />
person who has been placed with one of NFA’s carers in Lincolnshire. Chelsea<br />
explores a difficult time in her life throughout the poem and the effects that<br />
fostering has had, helping her to develop strong, loving relationships.<br />
The relationships were horrible. Then everything was terrible.<br />
Heartbroken was how I felt all the time. Then turned into the worst crime.<br />
Every day I was so depressed. And everything turned into a mess.<br />
Smashing the house was the worst thing I’d done. And it was really not that fun.<br />
The feeling of the police at my bedroom window. All of a sudden, I felt really low.<br />
My life.<br />
Falling out with my family what can I do, a nice fresh start and something new.<br />
I had enough so I went to London. The whole thing felt terrifying and I felt done in.<br />
That night we all got high, I felt I was dancing in the sky.<br />
Hearing my name on the news. Got me shaking in my shoes.<br />
My life.<br />
I walked in the doors and it felt like a prison. The whole 7 months felt like a mission.<br />
Upset was the worst thing I’ve felt. I just wanted to hide and melt.<br />
How can depression make you feel so sad? I thought it won’t make you feel so bad.<br />
For the first few weeks I was annoyed. Everything around made me feel destroyed.<br />
My life.<br />
Leaving the place was such an achievement. So happy I thought I was dreaming.<br />
Foster care was a whole new place. Like I won my first 100-mile race.<br />
Loved is the first thing I felt. Wrapped around tightly like a seat belt.<br />
After all of this we made up. Finally, after this horrible break up.<br />
Our relationships are stronger than before. We love each other more and more.<br />
My life.<br />
