VOYCE honors lifetime
achievement of local caregiver

Some would say Jenifer Russell,
Friendship Village Chesterfield’s community
life services director, skated to the
prestigious VOYCE lifetime achievement
award, an organization founded in 1979 to
honor exceptional work in caregiving and
person-centered care.
For years, Russell
boasted a reputation among
Friendship Village residents
for being the chairwoman
of fun by spreading cheer,
decorating for all events
and holidays, managing
a diverse range of the
Chesterfield community’s
activities including wellness/fitness
challenges,
horseshoe tournaments,
kayak races on the community
lake, talent shows, an
annual juried spring flower
show and a 1,000-person
Grandparents’ Day carnival
along with classes, outings and plays.
Often, she is told that she needs roller
skates. So, after VOYCE recognized Russell
with its lifetime achievement award
for her 22 years of service to Friendship
Village residents, she invested in a pair.
“Jen can multitask like nobody’s business,
and it’s a good thing, because she
does the job of about 13 people,” said
Carmen Worley, Friendship Village community
outreach director.
One of the newer programs Russell
developed joins resident veterans with
local high school students who interview
and photograph them. The students then
publish their stories in recognition of the
veterans’ service. The interviews evolved
into a wall of honor for veterans on the
Friendship Village campus.

Every year, VOYCE, formerly the
Long Term Care Ombudsman Program,
selects and recognizes individuals nominated
by their peers and supervisors who
daily excel in caring for
and respecting the rights of
residents in long-term care
communities. To assure
quality living across the
long-term care continuum,
the nonprofit provides free
assistance to families and
individuals looking for long
term care and advocacy for
those currently in long-term
care.
Award recipients for 2016
were chosen from more than
300 long-term care communities
as well as home care
providers, hospice agencies
and adult day programs in a
21-county service area.
According to VOYCE, 22,000 individuals
reside in long-term care communities
in the Greater St. Louis and Northeast
Missouri areas. One staggering fact is that
more than 50 percent of these individuals
never receive a visitor and have no one
to advocate on their behalf, according to
Mary Lynn Faunda Donovan, VOYCE
executive director.
For more than 35 years, VOYCE has
strived for a high quality of life for those
living in the long-term care continuum by
providing advocacy and support, Donovan
said.
“We estimate that 70 percent of those 65
and older will need long-term care, and 43
percent will spend some time in a longterm
care community,” Donovan said.
“Honorees impact lives of, and have their
lives deeply impacted by, the individuals
they serve.”
