2002 and 2012, the rate of newly diagnosed
type 1 diabetes cases went up by about 1.8
percent each year. The rate of type 2 diabetes
increased even more quickly, at 4.8
percent per year, although that rate rose
more sharply in females [6.2 percent per
year] than in males [3.7 percent per year]
between the ages of 10 and 19.
Some additional study findings included:
• Across all racial and ethnic groups from
2003-2012, the rate of new diagnosed
cases of type 1 diabetes increased more
annually in young males [2.2 percent] than
in females [1.4 percent].
• New cases of type 1 diabetes increased
most among Hispanic youth, with a 4.2
percent annual increase.
• Among youth between 10 and 19 years
of age, the rate of new diagnosed cases of
type 2 diabetes showed the highest annual
increase in Native Americans [8.9 percent],
Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders [8.5 percent]
and non-Hispanic blacks [6.3 percent].
• The smallest annual increase in cases of type
2 diabetes was seen in whites [0.6 percent].

Medical Office Building 2. Screenings will
include a full body-exam in a private room,
and gowns will be provided. If preferred,
participants can have just exposed areas of
concern examined rather than the full-body
exam. Screening will be offered on a firstcome,
first-served basis. Those under the
age of 18 must have a legal guardian present.

a Family and Friends CPR course
on Tuesday, May 16 from 6:30-9 p.m. at
the Wildwood Municipal Building, 16860
Main Street. The course provides instruction
and hands-on practice in infant, child
and adult CPR, first aid for choking and the
use of AEDs when appropriate. Youth, ages
10-15, must be accompanied by an adult to
participate. This course does not include
certification upon completion. Cost is $25
