A River Lea walk
Oliver Savory
long-term plans for studios for
creative enterprise, a visitor
centre, industrial heritage
archive and new moorings.
The organisation behind this
vibrant initiative, the Gasworks
Development Partnership
(GDP), is leading the way in the
kind of redevelopment that will
increase rather than detract
from the unique character of
the lower Lea.
Recent funding from the
National Lottery, Thames Water
and The Big Issue Foundation
means GDP can now take
things to the next stage and
Cody Dock looks set to become
a highly distinctive creative
quarter.
Meanwhile, the Leaway path on
the eastern shore of London’s
second river is on course to
continue to the Thames next
year.
For now, go up the road past
Star Lane DLR for a pleasant
riverside pit stop in Bow Ecology
Park and from here, it’s a short
stroll to Canning Town.
You can cross to the ‘island’,
surrounded by water on
three sides, to admire the
new buildings which the Royal
Ballet are soon to make home.
From here it’s a short walk to
Trinity Buoy Wharf featuring the
Thames' only lighthouse, art
installations, views of Greenwich
and two excellent eateries.
Sally Ramsden runs, mind,
body and nature wellbeing
sessions at Cody Dock, Sundays
10-12am. Next dates: 14 May,
9 and 30 July. £7/£5 advance
bookings and concessions.
