waikato Business News June/July 2016 17 To catch a thief Readers may remember the early 2000s movie where Leonado DiCaprio, plays Frank Abagnale in Catch Me if You Can. Abagnale relies on confidence scams, identity thefts, impersonating an airline pilot and conferring with surgeons. Tom Hanks eventually catches up with DiCaprio’s Abagnale after which he realised the error of his ways, assisting to catch other scam artists. In real life, I am starting to see clients who have been the victim of real life identity theft. With social media and the rise of the digital age, it is becoming a more common event. Identity theft is using the identity information of another person to pretend to be them. This can have serious impacts on people’s lives, especially if the person assuming your identity – is of a particularly doubtful character. Identity means those things about you that business and government use to establish who you are. The factors that make up your identity include your full name, your date of birth, your place of birth and your current address. These things are precious! The examples I have seen including hacking into someone’s Facebook pages to leave seriously damaging comments on a continued basis, to applying for someone else’s driving licence, using that document to commit other frauds and crimes, then telling the Police that you are the other person when being arrested for a crime. There is nothing worse than being expected to front up for a crime that you know nothing about. The Department of Internal Affairs has a list of very helpful information on its website about what New Zealanders can do to protect identity information. These helpful tips include: Be careful with your identity information, how much you give out and who you share it with. Keep key documents that are used to establish your identity (e.g. birth certificate and passport) in a safe and secure place. At the time it was terrifying and I wondered if I was going to make it as a chartered accountant in London.” Rewind six years, and Tim was working at Smiths Sports Shoes in Hamilton, with a degree in sport and exercise science, where he developed valuable knowledge of supply chain management. As sales manager, Tim found he enjoyed working with numbers, money and problem-solving. With a passion for business, Tim decided to enrol for double graduate diplomas in Accounting and Management at the University of Waikato, studying part-time from 2009 to 2012. “The whole student experience at Waikato was awesome; NOBODY KNOWS HAMILTON LIKE US it creates a huge network after completing university too.” Tim secured his first job as a junior accountant in 2010 and began reflecting back to his days at the shoe shop. “My boss was buying products from overseas, adding a margin and then selling it online so I thought hang on a minute, why can’t I do this too?” Armed with just $200 and a laptop, Tim founded an online importing and distribution company, and grew it to more than $80,000 annual revenue within 12 months. He went on to create an e-book training course, ‘E-Start-Up’, to share his experience with others wanting to set up an online importing business.
