Monaco edge
closer to Ligue
1 title with
Nancy win
• Reuters, Paris
Monaco edged closer to a first
Ligue 1 title since 2000 as a 3-0 win
at Nancy gave them a three-point
lead over defending champions
Paris St Germain on Saturday.
Tobias Badila’s own goal and
strikes by Bernardo Silva and
Thomas Lemar put the principality
side on 86 points with three games
to play, while PSG, who have two
games left, crushed Bastia 5-0. Monaco,
who have a much better goal
difference, will be virtually champions
if they beat Lille at home
next weekend. Leonardo Jardim’s
side went ahead after three minutes
when Badila deflected Valere
Germain’s cross into his own net.
Portugal midfielder Silva headed
home from Lemar’s cross to
make it 2-0 five minutes before the
break. Lemar sealed a straightforward
win four minutes from time,
after latching on a Kylian Mbappe
pass. Earlier, PSG had kept alive
their own slim title hopes.
There was a minute of applause
before kickoff to mark the 25th anniversary
of the Furiani tragedy. •
Dortmund sink Hoffenheim, Leipzig
book Champions League spot
• Reuters, BERLIN
Borussia Dortmund edged past
Hoffenheim 2-1 on Saturday to
move into third place in the Bundesliga
with two matches left and
take a big step towards securing a
spot in next season’s Champions
League group stage.
An early goal from Marco Reus
and a late one from Pierre-Emerick
Aubameyang sent Dortmund, who
are also through to the German Cup
final, up to 60 points, two ahead of
fourth-placed Hoffenheim, who
cut the deficit with a late penalty.
Timo Werner and subsitute Davie
Selke scored twice as promoted
RB Leipzig crushed Hertha Berlin
4-1 to secure a Champions League
group stage spot and a top three
finish in their sparkling first season
in the Bundesliga. Lepizig top
scorer Werner took his league goal
tally to 19 as second-placed Leipzig
move up to 66 points.
Champion Bayern Munich, who
secured the title last week, beat
bottom side Darmstadt 98 1-0 to
confirm their long-expected relegation.
With third place guaranteeing
more than 12m euros and fourth
leading to the tricky Champions
League qualifying rounds, Dortmund
looked more determined
from the start.
Reus put them ahead in the
fourth minute from what was
clearly an offside position, drilling
Newcastle celebrate winning the Championship at St James’ Park on Saturday
the ball through the legs of charging
goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
Aubameyang could have doubled
the lead 10 minutes later when
Dortmund were awarded a penalty
for a hand ball in what was another
controversial decision.
Reus had controlled the ball
with his arm before it bounced off
the hand of a Hoffenheim player
and referee Felix Brych awarded
the spot-kick, triggering angry
complaints from the visitors.
Aubameyang stepped up but
fired his low penalty wide to keep
the visitors in the game. Reus went
close to scoring a sensational second
goal on the hour but Baumann
slapped his powerful volley wide
with a reflex save. •
Blackburn make unwanted
history, Newcastle win title
• AFP, London
REUTERS
Blackburn Rovers became
the first Premier League
champions to drop into the
third tier of English football
yesterday whilst Newcastle
claimed the Championship
title on a nerve-racking final
day of the regular season.
Wins for another historic
club, two-time European
champions Nottingham Forest
- 3-0 over Ipswich - and
Chinese-owned Birmingham
City, who beat Bristol City
1-0, condemned Rovers,
owned by Indian poultry
firm Venkys, to the drop.
Rafael Benitez-managed
Newcastle did what they had
to do beating Barnsley 3-0 but
it took a howler from Brighton
goalkeeper David Stockdale to
ensure they returned to the
top flight as champion. •
