Meet Evesham's
new Mayor
Having been a member of
Evesham Town Council for the
past 10 years I was delighted to
be given the honour of being
made Mayor of Evesham for the
forthcoming municipal year. Our
Mayor Making ceremony, held
Monday 1st May in the Town
Hall, is a long held tradition
with Town Crier, Macebearers
and a fair amount of pomp and
ceremony. In fact, there has been
a Mayor Of Evesham since 1605.
The role of Mayor is threefold.
Firstly, I chair the town monthly
full council meeting. I also
attend all other sub-committee
meetings.
Secondly, I am Evesham’s chief
cheerleader. My task is to
accentuate the positive aspects
of living in Evesham to a wider
audience. Not hard to do as our
river, along with Abbey Park,
are well known attractions and
enjoyed by many visitors to
the town.
Thirdly, I will raise funds for my
chosen charities. This year there

Playground, Evesham Mental
Health Support Services and
St Richards Hospice. They are
all worthy causes who rely on
donations to carry out their
valuable work.

EVESHAM PORT STREET TO WORKMAN GARDENS
Following the amazing success of
the previous years, Evesham's Port
Street Fayre is set to expand this
year to be bigger and better with
an International theme.
New for 2017 the fayre is expanding
into Workman Gardens, at the
bottom of Port Street, next to the
River. This will be the ‘Kids Zone’
with Bouncy castles, climbing wall,
stand up paddleboarding on the
river and lots more.
On Sunday the 2nd July from
10am – 5pm there will be a stages
between top and bottom of Port
Street with a mix of entertainers
and stalls between it all!
It will also continue into the
evening at The Swann Inn on Port
Street.
The fayre is a genuine local
event for any and all residents
and visitors, with the theme
of ‘international fayre’, all are
welcome. There will be a large
variety of food available along the
street, and attractions and stalls.
Now a tradition, the Big Wheel, at
the top of the street is well worth
a go as it provides a great view
of the event and Evesham Town.
Street entertainers will be thrown
into the mix, and plenty to see
like the exotic animals, fire eaters,
dancing groups and more.
FREE to come and visit, the Port
Street International Fayre is a great
community event and we hope
you can pay it a visit on Sunday 2nd
July.

Thinking of starting
a business?
Is now a good time to be starting
your own business in Evesham
and Vale? A new course is being
run in Evesham to help people
looking to start their own
business. Germinate Enterprise is
a local scheme aimed at helping
people explore whether the
idea that people have for a new
business might work. The 6 week
course, starting in June, is led by
Chris Sheehan and Sarah Hewitt
who have many years of running
and mentoring businesses.
Course leader, Chris Sheehan
said: “With all the talk of Brexit
and what lies ahead, it might
seem starting your own business
in such uncertain times may
not be the best idea. However
change means there could be
new opportunities for a new
local product or service that
you might be the best person to
offer.”
Participants on the course
work through a simple to use
workbook exploring their idea,
looking at whether there is
a market for it and how the
finances might work out.
The course has been set up by
Germinate, a Christian charity
which helps Churches support
their local community. CEO,
Jerry Marshall said: “After a
year we have found that 60%
of businesses are supporting
the business owner and their
families”.
The business idea could be
a social enterprise like a
community café or farmshop or
a business taking your hobby or
previous experience to create a
new market.
The six week course will be held
at a local Evesham farm shop and
run from 6.30 to 8.30pm for 6
weeks in June and July and cost
just £30 to cover the workbook
and refreshments.

Save the date ... 24th June Evesham Carnival
NOT TO BE MISSED
EVESHAM CARNIVAL
On June 24th 2017 the Vale of
Evesham Round Table will once
again play a huge part in bringing
the local community together in
Evesham with the Annual Carnival.
Last year the streets of the town
were lined with crowds of people
as they cheered and applauded the
brightly decorated floats, walking
participants and marching bands.
This year it is predicted to be even
bigger with 20 floats and over
150 walking participants already
confirmed, who will dance, sing
and entertain the crowds along the
2 mile route around the town.
The procession around the river
side town starts and finishes at
the picturesque crown meadow,
where the crowds will be able to
enjoy live music, a food festival
and fairground rides. Led by a
carriage carrying the Annual
Carnival Queen, the floats include
local schools, clubs, charities and
local businesses. The best floats
are judged on the day by the town
Mayor and our very own Round
Table Chairman.
The new carnival queen and her
attendees have been chosen
following a fun day of auditions
organized by the Evesham Ladies
Circle. This year we are organizing
a drawing competition for our
younger spectators under the
theme of ‘Evesham Town’ with
prizes for the best in each age
group. These will be judged and
the winners announced on the
meadow after the procession
returns.

example of Round Table working
with the whole community to
create a fantastic day for all the

and attendees
are... drum roll
Following a talent show on the 25th
March at Evesham Town Hall the 2017
Carnival Queen and her attendees
has now been selected. Local children
showcased their talents to the panel
of judges which included the 2016
Carnival Queen, Kiaragh Brown and
members of Evesham Ladies Circle
& Evesham Roundtable.
The judges were really impressed
with the range of different talents
on the day which included singing,
reading, dancing and a gymnastics
performance.
Katie Gilbert, Past Chair of Evesham
Ladies Circle and one of the judges on
the day, said "it was such an honour
to be on the judging panel, I did not
realise how tough the decision making
would be. They were all fabulous and
we applaud them all for being brave
and performing in front of so many
people”

to announce the Evesham Carnival
Queen, the carnival Princess and
attendees for this years and the
talents they showcased on the day

When is ‘out of date’ food unsafe?
In a deli recently I was
astonished to find they had
been throwing away food
that was past its date. And
they had even returned some
to the supplier. It became
clear they didn’t understand
the differences in dating of
food for safety, quality or
stock rotation.
Here is a summary of dates
you will see on food, what it
means and what you need to
do about it.
USE BY – means eat before
or on that date. It’s all about
food SAFETY and is given to
food that can go off and be
unsafe, like cooked meat or
milk. It’s THE most important
date. Eat it before the date,
throw it away after the
date or freeze it (if you can)
before the date then defrost
overnight in the fridge and
use it within a day
BEST BEFORE
– Applied to
cans or dried
products or
vegetables…
They can all
be sold and eaten after the
date but the QUALITY may
not be as good. The texture,
colour or flavour may have
deteriorated (like chocolate
turning white with age).
SELL BY or DISPLAY UNTIL –
Used by retailers to ensure
food is sold in rotation. This
date is nothing for you to
worry about and you can
ignore

BBQ Asparagus (The
vegetable not the Gus Man but :)

Ingredients & Method
16-20 Asparagus spears,
about 500g/1lb 2oz (local farm shops)
2 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp soy sauce
Soy sauce
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 tbsp sesame seeds
With one hand, hold an asparagus
stalk at its base. Bend the stalk over
with your other hand – the asparagus
will break where the woody part ends
and the tender part begins. Discard
the base. Place 4 or 5 asparagus stalks
next to one another. Skewer them
crosswise in two places – just below
the tips and 3cm from the bottom –
with slender bamboo skewers. You will
end up with something that looks like
a raft.
In a small bowl, combine the sesame
oil, soy sauce, garlic and sesame seeds
and stir with a fork to mix. Brush this
mixture on the asparagus rafts on both
sides. Season the asparagus with a
little salt and lots of pepper.
Grill the asparagus on a barbecue or
in a griddle pan for 4-5 mins per side,
turning with tongs. Sprinkle with
sesame mix as they grill.
