Anniversaries are a cause for celebration, especially<br />
when they mark milestones for a country and culture.<br />
This year marks 100 years of Finland’s independence from<br />
Russia,, and it’s inspirational to see how countries so<br />
close together can each have their own distinct, beautiful<br />
heritage.<br />
Finland’s beloved sauna culture has taken new form<br />
with the launch of Löyly, the first public luxury sauna, a<br />
feat of passion, creativity, and perseverance. A visionary<br />
architecture firm inspired the owners — an eccentric<br />
actor and ambitious budding politician — to take a huge<br />
financial risk. And now their passion project is a must-see,<br />
must-experience Helsinki landmark.<br />
The courage and ambition to push boundaries seems<br />
to belong to the entire Nordic region — and Sweden’s<br />
legendary Vasa warship is testimony to that. Built with<br />
hundreds of statues and awe-inspiring ornamentation,<br />
its mission was to glorify the 17th-century King Gustavus<br />
Adolphus. But through the Vasa Museum’s tireless,<br />
innovative preservation efforts, it’s now stirring the<br />
world, reminding us that great works of art can help us<br />
understand our own past.<br />
Lastly, business mogul Johann Rupert not only believes<br />
traditional culture and craftsmanship are essential to<br />
preserving our heritage, but that they’re imperative for<br />
the future of humanity. He’s co-founded the Michelangelo<br />
Foundation to reinvigorate master craftsmanship around<br />
the world — a mission that unites the creativity of the<br />
artist with the skilled hand of the artisan, married with the<br />
core values of mankind.<br />

The Marimekko Fall/Winter 2017 collection<br />
As many fashion houses follow seasonal<br />
trends, one brand tries its best not to —<br />
focusing first on something as bold as its<br />
prints.<br />
“It has always been about freedom and how a woman<br />
can feel self-confident and dress for herself, not<br />
dress for someone else or for a man. When Marimekko<br />
started, that’s the reason why they became so famous<br />
in the ’60s,” says Satu Maaranen, a lead designer<br />
for the iconic Finnish brand Marimekko. “They<br />
stood out because of the silhouettes and the cuts in<br />
the clothes, which looked and felt so relaxed and free<br />
compared to those times.”<br />
Maaranen has been designing for Marimekko for<br />
seven years and is the founder of Pre Helsinki, an<br />
organization helping young Finnish designers find<br />
international work. As an entrepreneurially-minded<br />
designer always looking to help her peers, Maaranen<br />
has always appreciated Marimekko’s desire to empower<br />
the women wearing its clothes, and those<br />
working there.<br />
“Marimekko has always been very free-minded and<br />
multicultural,” she says. “All the designers have been<br />
living all around the world. You don’t have to be inhouse<br />
and always sit in the office,” she says with a<br />
laugh.<br />
The brand’s free-spirited ethos and prints were a<br />
very conscious decision at the brand’s beginning, a<br />
response to the climate of the time.<br />
The spirited Marimekko fashions quickly became a<br />
way for women to uplift and express themselves, connect<br />
with their roots, and ultimately to find a healthy<br />
balance in life.<br />
“Marimekko started after the war, and Finland was<br />
quite a poor country. We had to survive, and build everything<br />
from the beginning after the war,” she says. So<br />
Marimekko decided “to use bold and bright colours to<br />
tear up the mold on those times,” Maaranen says.<br />

Traditionally, the design “got inspiration from Finnish<br />
nature, using bright colours and bold patterns, because<br />
the winter is so long and it’s super dark here,”<br />
Maaranen says.<br />
While the neighbouring Scandinavian nations have<br />
the same harsh winters, there are other differences that<br />
make Marimekko distinctly Finnish.<br />
“We have never had a royal family or king, only presidents,”<br />
Maaranen says. “We don’t have that royal kind<br />
of luxury, where everything is decorated with gold. It’s<br />
much more practical.”<br />
While Marimekko is crafted as fashion for daily life<br />
and leaves intricate details out, its unique style truly<br />
stands on its own as something special, transformative.<br />
“I feel Marimekko is an art house,” says Maaranen.<br />
“It’s not a fashion house only, or design house only. I<br />
think it’s about art. The first thing they told me was,<br />
‘Now you are coming to an art house.’ And for artists, of<br />
course, it’s always about self-expression.”<br />

Just like her vivid designs, Satu Maaranen’s distinctive<br />
style defies being locked in. With her dark-green<br />
Acne Mohair Jumper and minimalist Céline Bam<br />
Bam Pumps, she exudes an edgy, androgynous vibe,<br />
from the men’s style Co-Axial Omega on her wrist to<br />
the boy-meets-girl vetiver notes in her FREDERIC<br />
MALLE scent. An orange Matkuri bag, Marimekko’s<br />
iconic 1970 design, injects an unexpected splash of<br />
colour. In her surroundings, Maaranen’s preferences<br />
are similarly laconic: the ultra-modern lines of the<br />
Paimio Chair by Finland’s Alvar Aalto; Marimekko’s<br />
iconic black-and-white Isot Kivet linens on her bed;<br />
the fresh simplicity of peonies. The designer finds<br />
inspiration wherever she goes: whether discovering<br />
the modern treasures of the Kiasma Museum; seeking<br />
spirituality at the Temppeliaukio Church, built into<br />
solid rock; or admiring Finland’s cultural legacy:<br />
from architectural landmarks such as the Ateneum<br />
to the melodies of one of its greatest composers, Jean<br />
Sibelius. Always a welcome treat is a stay at Helsinki’s<br />
artsy Lilla Roberts Hotel, or a spectacular meal<br />
at cozy Kuurna — finished with a piece of Finnish<br />

Jewellery is, of course, about craftsmanship and design, but<br />
it’s also far more than that — it’s about telling a story, reminding<br />
me of a favourite Ed Sabol quote:<br />
“Tell me a fact, and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth, and I’ll believe.<br />
But tell me a story, and it will live in my heart forever.”<br />
No one is taking the consumer on this individualized journey<br />
quite like the jewellery brand Pandora, a brand that encourages<br />
self-discovery and self-expression over a lifetime.<br />
Maybe Pandora’s embracement of the personalized journey<br />
is rooted in its own story, a brand that had to truly discover its<br />
own identity, since it started with no legacy and rose up at the<br />
most difficult time.<br />
Pandora, which sold 100 million pieces of jewellery in 2015<br />
in over a hundred countries, was launched in 1979 in the suburbs<br />
of Copenhagen by a goldsmith and his wife. The couple<br />
often ventured to Thailand, where they’d find unique pieces of<br />
jewellery to export, and they began to design their own collection.<br />
They experienced rapid success selling jewellery to stores<br />
in Denmark and soon moved their factory for handmade<br />
craftsmanship permanently to Thailand, where they’ve been<br />
ever since.<br />
While they were rising in status, their major breakthrough came<br />
with the hire of a new designer who could capture the owner’s<br />
vision of a piece of jewellery that had been popular over the ages<br />
— the charm bracelet. Talismans and charms have been worn for<br />
protection from malevolent spirits, and some of the world’s most<br />
distinguished people have adored them, such as England’s Queen<br />
Victoria in the 19th century, as well as Elizabeth Taylor and First<br />
Lady Mamie Eisenhower in the 20th century.<br />
But Pandora would take charm-collecting to new heights<br />
with the company’s high standard of in-house design,<br />
craftsmanship, and quality materials. The designs drafted<br />
in Denmark reinvented the traditional bracelet to include<br />
smaller and elegant charms, while its in-house handmade<br />
craftsmen in Thailand used higher-quality semi-precious<br />
stones, and 14k gold, sterling silver, cultured pearls, Murano<br />
glass and enamel. The result? Pandora broke into the<br />
market and packed jewellery stores when no one else could<br />
— during the recession of 2008.<br />
People were cautious buying a $5,000 piece of jewellery, but<br />
the affordable prices of Pandora’s silver bracelet and charms became<br />
the perfect gift of that era of price consciousness, though<br />
exclusive charms could cost hundreds of dollars. Charms then<br />
became an extension of self-expression, showing favourite pastimes<br />
or ways to remember priceless moments — or maybe just<br />
a way for a husband to show he’s still paying close attention to<br />
what his lady adores.<br />
Although Pandora’s jewellery might not cost thousands<br />
of dollars in one trip, the brand is cultivating a relationship<br />
for life, where collecting and gifting charms continues to<br />
enchant for as long as there are new experiences and sentiments<br />
to celebrate.<br />
Understanding that people want to express themselves in<br />
different ways throughout the year, Pandora now releases seven<br />
collections a year. For this spring, bright colours and festivity<br />
are the themes, with a collection called Dazzling Daisies,<br />
for a soft, feminine sparkle.<br />

Mor’s presence and outward beauty is a reflection of her<br />
inner strength and spirit.<br />

What stands out most about Pooja Mor isn’t her<br />
stunning eyes — it’s how she looks at you, draws<br />
you in, creating yoga — a union — a moment in time.<br />
Mor’s journey coming to know herself, being true to<br />
herself, and, in essence, to stop pretending, has been an<br />
exploration of her inner spirit, a tough thing to uncover<br />
in an industry so focused on outward beauty.<br />
“In modelling, people are always looking at you and<br />
judging you; you can see people talk about you,” she says.<br />
“But imagine if you have no fear of anything, no fear of<br />
being judged or objectified by others, no fear at all, then I<br />
think you can be very strong.”<br />
Mor grew up in India, surrounded by role models —<br />
her parents. She learned at an early age to be true to herself,<br />
giving her a moral foundation upon which she could<br />
later build an incredible life.<br />
“My whole family is very spiritual,” Mor says. “Every<br />
night my mother would tell me stories of legends of enlightened<br />
people and how they cultivated their minds.”<br />
She was particularly intrigued by these characters’ inner<br />
fortitude and ability to overcome obstacles and tests despite<br />
impossible odds.<br />
“That’s a cool life,” she remembers thinking. Mor<br />
also fondly remembers meditating with her father at a<br />
young age, helping her cultivate patience — something<br />
she’d need later waiting around for long stretches of time<br />
during shoots.<br />
Her spiritual upbringing would later give her the courage<br />
to embark on her own adventure that would take her<br />
around the world.<br />

Following intuition<br />
Mor was at college studying engineering when she entered a<br />
local beauty pageant for fun — and won.<br />
“When I saw the picture of me in the newspaper the next<br />
day, I thought to myself, ‘I can do this. I should try it,’” she says.<br />
But her parents didn’t agree.<br />
“There was a lot of pressure from the people around me,”<br />
Mor says. “Everybody was saying, ‘You’re leaving engineering<br />
for modelling? That doesn’t make any sense. That’s not a real<br />
job.’”<br />
So Mor began modelling in secret, confident that she could<br />
break through. After some local work in Delhi, an agency in<br />
Mumbai discovered her, and Mor set off for Mumbai, despite<br />
her parents’ skepticism.<br />
But her choice to take a risk and pursue her dreams was<br />
quickly followed by rewards. With her new agency, Mor did<br />
fashion weeks and worked for every major fashion magazine<br />
in India.<br />
Despite her wild success in Mumbai, Mor still yearned for<br />
a deeper spiritual connection, trying many forms of yoga and<br />
meditation. “I felt as if something was missing,” she says.<br />

“In modelling, people are always<br />
looking at you and judging<br />
you; you can see people<br />
talk about you. But imagine if<br />
you have no fear of anything,<br />
no fear of being judged or<br />
objectified by others, no fear<br />
at all, then I think you can be<br />
very strong.”<br />
True beauty<br />
Serendipitously, her modelling agency offered a free weekly<br />
meditation class called Falun Dafa, an ancient Chinese practice.<br />
So Mor invited her roommate, an Australian who wanted<br />
to experience India.<br />
“Meditation is such a big part of India, people come here<br />
especially for spiritual guidance,” she says.<br />
After the class, the two roommates laughed the whole way<br />
home, exclaiming how “positive” they both felt. Mor recalls, “I<br />
felt like I was dancing!”<br />
From that day on, she began to practice the exercises regularly<br />
to clear her mind, as the dual focus on cultivating her<br />
character along with practicing the exercises deeply touched<br />
her.<br />
“When I first read about the principles of Falun Dafa —<br />
truthfulness, compassion, tolerance — I thought to myself, I<br />
can be compassionate, and I’m somewhat tolerant, but what<br />
about truth?” she says.<br />
“I know that I sometimes bend my words to appear better in<br />
front of other people because I want to show that I am good,<br />
and I would just make up things.” She thought, “That’s not<br />

truthful; I’d better work on that,” remembering what her father<br />
used to tell her.<br />
“A lie has no legs,” he would say. “It means that people use lies<br />
to walk, but they don’t have the strength to support you to walk,<br />
so you are going to fall one day without legs,” she says.<br />
New adventure<br />
Mor’s new practice came at a perfect time, as she was given a<br />
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — and challenge — and would<br />
need extra clarity in her life. She was goofing around, doing a<br />
funny behind-the-scenes picture for her Instagram. An agent<br />
from Elite Model Management in New York spotted the photo<br />
and reached out to her to see if Mor would come model on the<br />
world’s most competitive stage — New York.<br />
“You need to want to create in this field, otherwise there’s no<br />
point,” she says. “I always want to push further,” so she took<br />
the chance and moved.<br />
The culture shock was tough for Mor, as one of the world’s<br />
fashion capitals also embodied a rawness, a make-it-or-breakit<br />
attitude that was different from home.<br />
“As an Asian, we tend to be very polite,” she says. “We don’t<br />
say whatever is on our mind. I learned that, after coming here<br />
to New York, you can just say whatever you think.”<br />
Even back in India, critique from people close to Mor, like<br />
an agent or family member, could shake her confidence. With<br />
the brashness of the City, she found even deeper solace looking<br />
inwardly for new ways to grow.<br />
“If someone said something, there must be a reason behind<br />
it — it’s my time to understand myself,” she says. “Before the<br />
practice [of Falun Dafa], I was more concerned about what<br />
was happening around me, and that’s how I’d learn. But later<br />
I started noticing more about myself, understanding myself.<br />
I found a beautiful person inside myself and I thought, ‘Oh!<br />
You exist!’”<br />
With that inner beauty has come outward success, as Mor’s<br />
career has taken off since her move to New York, including<br />
fashion shows with Givenchy, Victoria Beckham and Dolce&Gabbana,<br />
among many more. She’s appeared on several<br />
covers, including her most memorable — a black and white<br />
shoot with acclaimed photographer Peter Lindbergh for Vogue<br />
Italia, capturing her special warmth, serenity and strength —<br />
the Indian star’s most endearing features.<br />
“It was such a windy and cloudy day, the sea was gray — we<br />
were so in the zone of beauty and admiration,” says Mor, who<br />
has modelled for Bazaar, V Magazine, and other top fashion<br />
magazines around the world. “Normally you need to be mentally<br />
prepared for the mood, but for this shoot, there was nothing.<br />
He said nothing. It was the most natural thing that ever<br />
happened. I was just walking by myself — there was no effort<br />
of being someone. I think he captured all of us without us<br />
knowing it, without me pretending to be someone.”<br />
While Mor has proved it to herself that she can make it<br />
on the biggest stage, it’s that beautiful relationship — the one<br />
with her truer sense of self — that the engineer-turned-national-model-turned-international-star<br />
cherishes the most.<br />
“These three characteristics of truthfulness, compassion, and<br />
tolerance are so strong,” Mor says. “When I do things accordingly,<br />
I feel that they’re right. There is the universe and there’s<br />
always a consequence for everything. Everything goes around<br />
in your life — the decisions I made when I was young, I can<br />
see them having positive effect on my life today.”

When a famous Finnish actor teamed up with a budding<br />
politician to build a multi-million-dollar public<br />
sauna, everyone thought they were crazy, and rightfully<br />
so. To start, they wanted to build it along the Helsinki<br />
seashore in front of unattractive industrial buildings<br />
that, to say the least, don’t exactly welcome you to Finland’s<br />
capital. And since the coastline was barren, with<br />
no forest nearby to provide an unlimited resource for<br />
logs to heat it, they’d have to purchase massive amounts<br />
of wood, transport it, then hire someone full-time to<br />
make sure the public sauna stayed comfortably (or uncomfortably)<br />
hot throughout the day.<br />
“It was definitely a passion project because it sounded<br />
like an idiotic idea,” says Ville Hara, cofounder of<br />
Avanto Architects Ltd, the firm that built this structure<br />
of air known as Löyly. So the happy-go-lucky actor<br />
Jasper Pääkkönen and tightly-wound Antero Vartia, a<br />
politician, “were really worried in the beginning,” says<br />
Hara. “Antero said he couldn’t sleep at night because<br />
he wondered how he’s ever going to pay back the six<br />
million Euros he borrowed from the bank.”<br />

But Finns love their saunas. In a country with only five<br />
and half million people, there are over three million saunas,<br />
more than one per household. Pääkkönen and Vartia<br />
weren’t about to give up on their dream to create the first<br />
truly public recreational sauna in their homeland, and believed<br />
— though it had never been done — that they could<br />
cover operational costs with a restaurant.<br />
Reinventing a ritual<br />
The Finnish obsession with saunas couldn’t be illustrated<br />
more clearly than with the architecture firm’s branding of<br />
itself and this sauna. The word “avanto” in Avanto Architects<br />
Ltd. means the hole in the ice that you dip into after a sauna.<br />
“It’s a really powerful experience,” says co-owner Hara,<br />
clearly addicted to his daily ritual. “It wakes you up really,<br />
and you really feel good afterwards even though it’s kind of<br />
a shock to your body.”<br />
And the word “löyly” means the steam rising from the<br />
hot rocks inside a sauna, with the Old Finnish translating<br />
to “spirit” or “life” — a fitting term, given the culture’s<br />
love for the ritual. Although Avanto was clearly the prime<br />
choice to pioneer building a public sauna, the Finnish pastime<br />
itself presented some unique challenges.<br />
In the 1950s, before people commonly had bathrooms at<br />
home, public saunas were used to wash and bathe. But as<br />
private bathrooms became more popular, the sauna’s significance<br />
has changed quite a bit — “it’s not about washing<br />
yourself, it’s a social thing where you meet with people and<br />
relax, and you hang out,” Hara explains.<br />

As people migrated away from rural areas to cities<br />
and quickly urbanized the country in the ’60s and ’70s,<br />
sauna culture became even more significant and unique<br />
to Finland.<br />
“We didn’t have urban culture like in Paris or in New<br />
York, so people mostly stayed at home in their apartment,<br />
inviting people to their place when they wanted to meet<br />
somebody instead of hanging out in cafes and restaurants<br />
and so on,” says Hara.<br />
While the sauna experience was now urban and social, it<br />
was still private, and the thought of opening this intimate<br />
experience to strangers seemed odd. But for a traveller,<br />
to visit Finland without experiencing the quintessential<br />
Finnish ritual would seem an incomplete vacation.<br />
This was another major selling point for Löyly —<br />
sharing Finnish culture with the world, though sauna<br />
purists couldn’t handle any needed changes in their customary<br />
ritual.<br />
“It’s really a tradition, and people have very strong opinions<br />
about it, so every time you change something, you<br />
are criticized quite a lot,” says Hara. Specifically, making<br />
people wear bathing suits caused an uproar among the<br />
Finns used to bathing naked with their own gender, unless<br />
among family.<br />
“It’s a little bit like opera,” Hara says. “It’s kind of a traditional<br />
thing that has been done for hundreds of years<br />
and it has always been the same, but we can still develop it<br />
further and investigate new ways to do this sauna ritual.”<br />
Turns out, these dreamers weren’t madmen, but visionaries.<br />
“We opened Löyly at the beginning of the summer,<br />
and it has been a really huge success — it’s always filled<br />
with people,” says Hara. Royal Restaurants, which manages<br />
the restaurant along with many high-profile establishments<br />
in Helsinki, set its all-time selling record this<br />
summer at Löyly.<br />
A natural solution<br />
While designing a dream project can often be a nightmare,<br />
in the case of Löyly, there were some unlikely heroes<br />
at the core of it.<br />
“They always say that the bureaucrats are not nice people,<br />
because when you have good ideas like pop-up restaurants<br />
and creative urban pop-up culture, they prohibit them due<br />
to legislation and rules,” says Hara. “But in this case, actually,<br />
the whole idea came from Helsinki city.”<br />
While Hara found this paradigm shift encouraging, it<br />
didn’t limit the hurdles Avanto would encounter once<br />
given the job. The city’s primary aim was to beautify an<br />
industrial, run-down port that was discouraging tourists<br />
from exiting their cruise ships to shop and explore Helsinki,<br />
losing the city substantial tax revenue.<br />
The city’s long-term solution is housing development,<br />
but since that will take 20 years, something more immediate<br />
was desired. So Avanto’s challenge was that it had to<br />
not only consider what it was looking at now on the coast,<br />
it had to design a sauna that would melt in with the future<br />
landscape 20 years down the road.<br />
“The biggest concern was not to ruin this beautiful park<br />
that will be there in the future, and we also pushed the<br />
building as low as possible, so the buildings behind that are<br />
going to be constructed wouldn’t lose their expensive sea<br />
view,” says the architect. “Nature is so sparse in this area.<br />
Instead of a traditional building — a box-like building —<br />
Löyly is more like a landform or artificial topography. So it<br />
blends — it’s part of the coastal scenery.”<br />
Like true visionaries, the creatives at Avanto solved<br />
these design problems, meanwhile tying the sauna — and<br />
consequently the visitors — back to nature, one of the<br />
traditional aspects of sauna culture.<br />
But then the second investor couldn’t raise the funding,<br />
so the project stalled again.<br />
That’s when the actor and staunch environmentalist<br />
Jasper Pääkkönen, as well as business partner and future<br />
Green Party Parliament member Antero Vartia, fell in<br />

love with the design resembling a “tunturi,” the Finnish word<br />
for a large hill that rests on flat terrain. In fact, the eccentric<br />
duo was so excited, they bought the project and tripled the<br />
budget.<br />
Of course, the investors were adamant about using woods<br />
harvested sustainably and efficient heating methods to lower<br />
environmental impact — adding more difficulty to the project,<br />
but at the same time, more fulfillment and testimony of their<br />
love for nature.<br />
The bank handed over its millions, and somehow, despite the<br />
stress and sleepless nights, Löyly has exceeded everyone’s expectations,<br />
including Hara’s.<br />
“It’s really hard to say why we go to sauna, because it’s not<br />
such a rational thing to do.” He laughs again. If nothing else,<br />
the architect says, it’s time to unplug from the all-consuming<br />
digital world and a chance to connect directly with other people,<br />
face to face, or at least through the misty löyly.<br />
“Maybe this sauna culture is so popular because it’s going back<br />
to the roots,” he says.<br />

Michelangelo dedicated his life to his craft and works,<br />
which in turn have inspired humanity for 500 years,<br />
from heavenly Sistine Chapel frescoes to majestic sculptures<br />
like David. Even in his final, unfinished piece — the Pietà<br />
Rondanini — the maestro captures like no other that truly<br />
special union of visionary artist and expressive artisan.<br />
“Pietà Rondanini is an unfinished work where the beauty<br />
of polished human form emerges from the rough essence<br />
of stone, a combination that creates an emotional<br />
and thought-provoking sculpture,” reads the Michelangelo<br />
Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, a new Geneva-based<br />
nonprofit that defends, revives, and inspires master<br />
craftsmanship around the globe, starting in Europe.<br />
The Michelangelo Foundation’s founders — Johann Rupert,<br />
chairman of luxury group Richemont, which owns<br />
brands like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Jaeger-LeCoultre,<br />
along with Dr. Franco Cologni — believe that the spirit,<br />
values and heritage of the métiers d’art are missing today, and<br />
may be lost forever if something isn’t done now.<br />
“We put so much value on personality, on entertainment,<br />
and on what is explicitly made to not last,” says Rupert. “It<br />
seems healthy to me that we question why we value these<br />
things and whether or not it is at the expense of more inherently<br />
valuable things: activities or individuals with depth,<br />
who focus on something beyond themselves, beyond the moment<br />
— people who are humble and willing to continually<br />
learn as well as to teach and to do good.”<br />
Cologni ventures to say they’re not simply founding an organization,<br />
they’re creating a cultural movement — what he<br />
calls “artisan humanism.”<br />

Rupert adds, “Artisan humanism describes a belief that<br />
what is distinctly human is present and active in artisanship,<br />
and that it provides a way for us to express and assert<br />
our humanity in the face of serious threats to it.”<br />
No Easy Way Out<br />
“Our economies are in the midst of being taken over by<br />
machines,” says Rupert. “In grocery stores, airports, hospitals,<br />
banks, drones, driverless cars, computers that think”<br />
— people are losing their livelihoods — and life, spirit, humanity<br />
— a phenomenon that needs to change.<br />
“The core of the first Renaissance was the revival of the<br />
notion in Greek philosophy that ‘Man is the measure of all<br />
things,’” says Rupert. It’s humanity’s creativity, individuality,<br />
strong character and perspectives that truly endure over<br />
centuries and grow into heritage. “Why that concept is important<br />
today is precisely because of the unbridled growth<br />
of technology and the way it is dominating us. We have to<br />
bring human beings back to centre stage.”<br />
The artisan — and the intangible qualities he represents,<br />
such as lifelong dedication and the pursuit for perfection<br />
— are the keys to a proper realignment for mankind.<br />
“Craftsmanship provides a counterbalance to these<br />
trends,” says Rupert. “It highlights and represents what<br />
humans can do that machines cannot. It also connects us<br />
to the natural world and reminds us that ultimately the<br />
source of beauty is distinctly human.”<br />
While the efficiency of machines presents the most<br />
glaring problem, another more hidden one will be equally<br />
challenging for the foundation to face.<br />

“Today, design schools are filled with people who can imagine<br />
things but who have never had the opportunity to work<br />
with their hands,” says Rupert. This bias that lauds working<br />
with the head but not the hands is a consequence of the industrial<br />
revolution where division of labour created specialization,<br />
which, in the information age, becomes even more specific.<br />
As technology strips away jobs from the workforce, it removes<br />
far more than a paycheck — it steers people away from<br />
their values and purpose. Artisans are often born with talent,<br />
usually aligned with a destiny to create. The Michelangelo<br />
Foundation literature reads, “Talent is a natural, innate ability<br />
and an intangible gift which, like a muscle, comes with a requirement<br />
to be developed or lost. Talented artisans are living<br />
treasures with a propensity towards perfection.”<br />
Though it’s an uphill battle, the knighted founders — who<br />
have both been honoured as Légion d’Honneur recipients —<br />
look optimistically to the foundation’s future.<br />
“Today, more than ever, we are in great need of connection,<br />
both to our environment and to one another,” says Cologni.<br />
“We have been working in Italy for two decades to create a<br />
movement that acknowledges and encourages the work of<br />
master artisans and gives young people the chance to enter this<br />
world of culture and beauty.”<br />
Paradigm Shift<br />
“These master craftsmen are some of the world’s heroes,” says<br />
Rupert. “They are creating beautiful, useful things that last,<br />
things that are made with heart and soul. These individuals<br />
put a great deal of themselves into their work, and they deserve<br />
recognition and support.”<br />
From lacemaking to leatherwork, haute couture to crystal,<br />
incomparable musical instruments to the finest porcelain,<br />
the Michelangelo Foundation will perpetuate artisanship by<br />
creating a global ecosystem of métiers d’art. It will digitally<br />
connect virtuosos; facilitate real-world apprenticeships so that<br />
generational secrets can be passed on; promote these masters<br />
in publications, specialized networking, events and online; and,<br />
of course, cultivate constant dialogue between the worlds of<br />
design and craftsmanship, in hope that creatives today and tomorrow<br />
will unify the talents of creative design and master<br />
craftsmanship once again.<br />
“We are living in a critical moment of systemic change. The<br />
major systems and beliefs that have been carrying us along over<br />
the past couple of hundred years are falling away,” says Rupert.<br />
“I think it is our responsibility to take the long view and to<br />
build for the future. This is what differentiates human beings<br />
from other creatures, our ability to look into the future and to<br />

As the main mast gently rose out of Stockholm harbour,<br />
the watching crowds ignited, cheering. For 333 years,<br />
the beloved and mysterious Vasa warship lay hidden,<br />
preserved in its watery casket 30 metres deep, until its discovery<br />
and resurrection in the middle of the 20th century.<br />
“It’s a very physical example of cultural identity or a cultural<br />
object, and it’s a very direct connection to Swedish history,<br />
even though Vasa never sailed,” says Mathias Andersson, the<br />
marketing director at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. “It’s<br />
the largest shipwreck ever to have been brought up out of the<br />
water. It’s like an ongoing adventure.”<br />
What’s intriguing about the Vasa warship is that it was<br />
crafted for a certain calling — namely war — but it sailed a<br />
mere 1300 metres on its maiden voyage and then tipped over<br />
and sank, hinting that the glorious vessel had a different destiny<br />
altogether.<br />
The King of Sweden Gustavus Adolphus had launched a<br />
war with Poland-Lithuania to expand his empire, so he ordered<br />
the building of the four-story-tall Vasa, a legendary warship<br />
on a mission to do more than simply win battles on water.<br />
“First of all, it was a warship to use in war and to scare and<br />
fight the enemy, but at the same time, all the sculptures have<br />

a symbolic meaning,” says Andersson. “People in the age of<br />
Vasa, they could not read, but they could understand pictures<br />
because they knew stories. It was a floating propaganda<br />
machine. Like a peacock bird, the King wanted to show his<br />
wealth and political ambitions, so this really was like a floating<br />
embassy or a floating palace.”<br />
The majestic ship boasted over 700 sculptures, which continue<br />
to take patrons’ breath away at the Vasa Museum in<br />
Stockholm, the world’s most visited maritime museum with<br />
over 35 million visitors having witnessed the magnificent Vasa<br />
warship.<br />
Decoding the Past<br />
“In the history of maritime archaeology, this find stands out<br />
because of when it happened and how well-preserved it is and<br />
how successful the museum has been,” says Frederick Hocker,<br />
Vasa Museum’s director of research. “Because of the status<br />
of the find, getting to work here is like getting the chance to<br />
compete in the Olympics or play in the World Cup.”<br />
With over 40,000 fragments found, the ship’s mysteries<br />
continually reveal themselves.<br />
“We used to think we had no navigational equipment on<br />
the ship — no compasses, no way to keep time,” Hocker says.<br />
“But in recent years, we’ve discovered that we do have those<br />
things, but they were so fragmentary that they hadn’t been<br />
recognized.”<br />
As they learned to decode the wreckage, they began piecing<br />
together thousands of fragments of textiles from clothing,<br />
leather scraps and bits of shoes, allowing them to envision<br />
the fashions of the day, from rich to poor.<br />
“Virtually anything I want to know about Swedish society<br />
or northern European society in the 17th century, there’s<br />
something I can learn about that aspect of society from the<br />
ship,” says Hocker.<br />
Of course, as exciting as the prospect of finding tens of<br />
thousands of artifacts is, it can be equally overwhelming, so<br />
Hocker’s planning and prioritizing became invaluable.<br />
“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” says Hocker. At any given<br />
time, the museum typically has two major research projects<br />
under way with several minor ones. Currently, they’re<br />
in their second year researching the interior cabins, sifting<br />
through 35 pallets of fragments of thousands of pieces of<br />
wood, learning about panelling, furniture, decoration and<br />
how people lived there.<br />
“Ultimately, the goal there is to be able to reconstruct what<br />
the inside of the ship looked like: how it was decorated, who<br />
lived where, and what their environment was like,” he says,<br />
hinting of their future experiential exhibitions, as the museum<br />
hopes to keep the Vasa alive long after Hocker is gone.<br />
“Most museums won’t tell you how long they can preserve<br />
something,” says Hocker. “But we decided we would put a<br />
number, we’d set ourselves a goal. We believe it ought to be<br />
possible to preserve Vasa for 1,000 years at least.”<br />
The museum determined that ambitious goal after studying<br />
Norwegian buildings built of oak, the same material as<br />
the ship, which have survived outside in the rain for centuries<br />
as well.<br />
“If we’re going for 1,000 years, the ship was raised 56 years<br />
ago, so we’re more than five percent of the way there,” says<br />
the head of research. “I like to think that by the time I retire,<br />
we’ll be at seven and a half percent,” he says, smiling.<br />
Not only will the Vasa outlast the dedicated experts taking<br />
care of it, it likely will outlast the actual museum building<br />
where it’s displayed.<br />
“Concrete has a fixed lifetime, which is less than 1,000<br />
years,” he says. “So there’s a good chance if you come back to<br />
see Vasa in 1,000 years, this building won’t be here anymore.”<br />
As the visitors stand in awe of the Vasa’s durability and<br />
exquisite craftsmanship — with 98 percent of the ship still<br />
original — the patrons inevitably ask one question — “Why<br />
did it sink?”<br />
The short answer is innovation. Leaders and master shipbuilders<br />
were constantly looking to pioneer and improve on<br />
what already existed.<br />
Simply stated, the ship was slightly too narrow to bear its<br />
height, especially the weight of the guns placed too high up<br />
in the upper two decks.<br />

“The Vasa’s sister ship, which was virtually identical except that it was 90cm wider, was in<br />
service for 30 years,” says Hocker. “In the 17th century, virtually every ship of Vasa’s type that<br />
was built wasn’t good when it was first put into service. The tools didn’t exist to predict how<br />
it would sail, so you had to base it on your experience, which was fine if you were going to<br />
build a copy of the ship you already built. But once you innovate, once you get away from<br />
what you know to be a good shape or a good design, there’s no way to analyze it except to<br />
build it and see.”<br />
Naturally, the museum embraces the idea that it too will have to innovate if it wants to<br />
preserve the Vasa for ten centuries. It makes one wonder — maybe King Adolphus’ desire<br />
to impress the world with the beauty of Swedish culture will be achieved on a scale even he<br />
couldn’t imagine.<br />

When we typically think of a pioneer, a swashbuckling<br />
adventurer may come to mind — an almost mythic<br />
character who survived the sea gods on an odyssey or<br />
wrestled a bear with his bare hands. But one 19th-century<br />
Swede was responsible for the development of a complex<br />
system of transportation around the world — tunnels,<br />
canals, railways and roads — with his greatest conquests<br />
transpiring inside a most unlikely place — a laboratory.<br />
The scientist, Alfred Nobel, patented dynamite in 1867,<br />
which was quickly adopted worldwide as a safer way to<br />
blast through the countryside and build complex transportation<br />
networks internationally. However, despite the<br />
explosive impact of Nobel’s inventions, including over 350<br />
patents, one creation crowns him the master or mentor of<br />
all pioneers — the Nobel Prize.<br />
After amassing a fortune through his scientific and entrepreneurial<br />
endeavors, Nobel surprised his family, friends<br />
and the public when he died. The bulk of his wealth was<br />
donated to establish the Nobel Prize, honouring every<br />
year the most prestigious intellectual pioneers around the<br />
world in literature, science and in the promotion of peace.<br />
While his gift to the world was unexpected, it’s not<br />
entirely surprising. The son of an inventor and engineer,<br />
Nobel’s curiosity about how the world worked — at every<br />
molecular level — was all-encompassing, a true lover of<br />
ideas, from the sciences to the humanities. It’s that special<br />
spirit that lives on through his generous Nobel Prize every<br />
year, having honoured scientists and world leaders such as<br />
Marie Curie and Martin Luther King.<br />
For the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize, the Nobel<br />
Museum opened in 2001 with the purpose to “prove that<br />
people can change the world. Through exhibitions, artefacts,<br />
films and guided tours, visitors to the museum are<br />
introduced to Nobel Laureates whose courage, creativity<br />
and tenacity have shaped our daily lives,” reads the museum’s<br />
literature.<br />
One such exhibition that runs until September, “Experiment<br />
— Ideas, Tools and Nobel Prizes,” presents scientific<br />
work that shifted the understanding of human existence,<br />
highlighting the works of Nobel Laureates Marie Curie,<br />
Albert Einstein, and Peter Higgs. These “ten scientific experiments<br />
have changed how we perceive the world and<br />
have given us opportunities for changing it. To experiment<br />
is to play with nature. Curiosity compels us,” reads the museum<br />
literature.<br />
For many years there have been plans to create a meeting<br />
place for the Nobel Prize. Now with the construction<br />
of the Nobel Center on a wonderful site along Stockholm’s<br />
central waterfront, this dream is becoming a reality.<br />
Through its wide range of public activities, the centre<br />
will invite people into Nobel Laureates’ unique worlds as<br />
a catalyst for the next generation of free thinkers, problem<br />
solvers and global leaders.<br />

The young Queen of Sweden, Hedvig Eleonora —<br />
whose beauty had enticed the King to marry her —<br />
decided she needed a jaw-dropping palace. Her husband,<br />
the King, had recently died, and she would rule as regent<br />
of the country until their young son was old enough to<br />
become the next king. Sweden was one of the most powerful<br />
states in Europe, and the palace she would commission<br />
had to dazzle visiting royalty and dignitaries with its<br />
grandeur. And so, in 1662, Drottningholm Palace was<br />
built in grand Baroque style.<br />
As it turned out, Eleonora — like the Chinese Empress<br />
Dowager Xiaozhuang — ended up reigning for much of<br />
her life. Even when her son assumed power, he still deferred<br />
to her and called her “the Queen.” Later, when her<br />
grandson left to fight the Great Northern War, she assumed<br />
control of Sweden once again.<br />

The Swedish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world. The current<br />
Swedish royal family, headed by King Carl XVI Gustaf, has used<br />
Drottningholm Palace as their main residence since 1981.<br />

One highlight of the palace is Hedvig Eleonora’s peacock-blue<br />
bedchamber. You’ll gaze in amazement at the<br />
lavish décor — the gilded furniture, silk wallpaper and<br />
porcelain vases. Eleonora never actually slept in this state<br />
bedchamber, though. She used it for official purposes, to<br />
greet visitors. No doubt she succeeded in impressing many<br />
prominent guests here during her long reign.<br />
After Eleonora’s passing, the palace remained the residence<br />
for the royal ladies. Then in 1744, it was given as<br />
a wedding present to Princess Louisa Ulrika of Prussia<br />
when she married the Swedish Crown Prince. A lover of<br />
the arts, Louisa thrust Drottningholm into its golden age,<br />
redecorating the interiors in the latest French Rococo style<br />
on display at the Palace of Versailles.<br />
She also added a splendid library. Dripping with crystal<br />
chandeliers, the gilt-adorned library simply oozes luxury.<br />
A friend of Voltaire, Louisa loved to read — she founded<br />
Sweden’s Academy of Letters, which promotes the study<br />
of humanities and social sciences. What must it have been<br />
like to pick up one of her precious history or botany books,<br />
and read in that room?<br />
On her 33rd birthday, Louisa received a surprise gift from<br />
her husband — a “Chinese pleasure palace.” In a letter to her<br />
mother, she wrote of her delight: “He led me to one side of the<br />
garden and suddenly to my surprise, I found myself gazing<br />
upon a real fairytale creation, for the King had built a Chinese<br />
palace, the loveliest imaginable.”<br />

Chinoiserie was in fashion at the time, and this<br />
smaller, pretty pink palace displays the exquisite<br />
Chinese porcelain statues, lacquered panels, china,<br />
and vases that so fascinated Louisa and her friends.<br />
Indeed, as you wander through the red, green, and<br />
yellow rooms, you can easily imagine them reading<br />
or laughing, gossiping and having fun as they played<br />
cards there.<br />
The “confidence” dining room, in a separate building<br />
beside the Chinese palace, is also intriguing. Its<br />
dining table could be lowered underground, so servants<br />
could set the meal on it then raise it back up<br />
into the dining room. This way, the royals could eat<br />
in private without servants overhearing their conversations.<br />
The room is the sparest in the palace. Nature<br />
reigns supreme — Louisa must have found pleasure<br />
enough in the leafy views through the glass windows<br />
encircling the one-room building, and in the secrets<br />
shared there.<br />
Drottningholm is Swedish for “Queen’s Island.” It’s<br />
a tribute to the vision and creativity of Eleonora and<br />
Louisa — both beautiful, strong-willed, intelligent<br />
women. The golden-hued palace today is one of the<br />
finest and best-preserved palaces in Northern Europe,<br />
designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also<br />
still full of life; the current Swedish King and Queen<br />
make their home here. A large part is open to the<br />
public, however. And one of the best daytrips you can<br />
enjoy in Stockholm is to take a century-old steamer<br />
across Lake Mälaren to visit “Queen’s Island.”<br />

We toured Drottningholm Palace while visiting Stockholm<br />

We’re talking turmeric — the mysterious spice<br />
known for its characteristic yellow colour.<br />
Largely unknown to the Western world until its discovery<br />
by Marco Polo in 1280, turmeric has been<br />
used throughout ancient China, India, and Egypt for<br />
at least 4,000 years. An important part of the Indian<br />
holistic philosophy of Ayurveda and traditional Chinese<br />
medicine, the brilliant powder is known for its<br />
anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties,<br />
earning it the reputation of a miracle spice.<br />
Called Jaing Huang in Chinese, turmeric is a key<br />
component of both modern and traditional Chinese<br />
remedies; its numerous medicinal properties have<br />
been recorded in detail in Li Shizhen’s “Compendium<br />
of Materia Medica.” In Chinese homeopathy, its acrid<br />
taste is considered warm, involving the meridians of<br />
the spleen and liver, and its many uses include treatment<br />
of digestive issues, high blood pressure, arthritis,<br />
and diabetes, among others.<br />
For all its health benefits, turmeric’s distinctive,<br />
mildly sweet flavour is also delicious, lending itself<br />
beautifully to creamy dishes and beverages. In this<br />
rich golden drink, ground turmeric, fresh turmeric<br />
root, and ginger, which maximizes the body’s absorption<br />
of turmeric, are pureed with coconut milk<br />
and fresh fruit for an invigorating spring tonic that’s<br />
as luscious as it is nourishing.<br />

Recipe<br />
1 cup pineapple, cut into pieces<br />
1 cup coconut milk<br />
1 banana<br />
½ tablespoon honey (use more for a sweeter drink)<br />
1 inch fresh organic turmeric root<br />
1 teaspoon turmeric powder<br />
1 inch fresh organic ginger<br />
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until<br />
smooth, enjoy.<br />
