My grandfather used to sing me sleep. It’s
one of my earliest memories — his rumbling,
soothing voice in and out of harmony
with the Peking Opera crackling on
the radio in the background. Looking back, I wonder
if my fondness for traditional song and culture, which
seeped into my subconscious as I drifted off as a child,
is somehow tied to my grandfather — his nurturing love,
his sincere passion for the arts, or maybe a mix of it all.
Kindness, passion, mentorship — these seem to
be common qualities in the maestros of our hour,
particularly the ones you’ll read about herein. Alexander
Neef, the ambitious young general director of Toronto’s
Canadian Opera Company, illustrates clearly that a
heart purely moved by the arts can forge a pathway
straight to the mountaintop.
Of high peaks and unbearable lows, no one’s story
speaks more true than the modern master of classical
Chinese painting, Cuiying Zhang. She cheated death —
more than once — with a will that would bring tears to
her ancestors’ eyes. And her mission now is even more
touching.
Selfless sacrifice — it’s the spirit of the season just as
much as the presence of the presents inside our gift
guide. Inspired by foundations and charity, we’ll all
remember in this wintry season that giving back is how
we stay truly warm in this life.

At only 26, Harriet Guadagnuolo is living every fashionista’s
dream. With no formal fashion training, the creator and head
designer of high-fashion brand Tempo Italy absorbed her knack for
couture by osmosis, growing up with a mother who owned several
luxury boutiques. “From a very young age, she would take me to
Europe on buying trips. I’ve learned almost everything I know from
her,” she says. Guadagnuolo’s love of all things Italy came courtesy of
her Italian-born father. “My parents met in Rome, so I have a real love
for the country and all it has to offer,” she says.
With Tempo garments handcrafted by skilled tailors in a factory
outside Florence, Guadagnuolo takes pride in carrying on Italian
tradition and ensuring that each detail in her contemporary classic
pieces is exceptional. “In a world of fast fashion, it has been an amazing
experience witnessing the process of a garment made by hand,” she
says, pointing out her favourite piece, the Special Delivery coat, where
even the inner seams and buttons are wrapped in silk twill. “We like
to think we thought of everything!”

Adecade ago, the Canadian Opera Company (COC)
wasn’t even in the conversation of best opera houses in
the world, but one ambitious, passionate man is changing that
— quickly.
“What we have been trying to do here, for 10 years now, is
to make COC a destination for great artists,” says Alexander
Neef, who became its general
director in 2008. “And I think
it’s working very well, because
there has been no singer who
has been here for the first time
who doesn’t want to come
back. We have more and more
people who want to do their
own debuts. It’s becoming an
important company.”
The stylish, elegant, yet personal
venue where the COC
performs, the Four Seasons
Centre for the Performing
Arts, opened two years prior to Neef ’s arrival in Toronto —
the bait that lured the 34-year-old casting director from the
Paris Opera House. Neef saw tremendous opportunity not
only for himself but for the company and the city, the very
vision and energy the COC grabbed onto when hiring him.
“What I felt coming here is that I’ve been given a very good
instrument to play on,” says Neef, who has since filled the
centre with top international singers, as well as patrons.
“I think this is the best opera house in North America, in
terms of the intimacy of the opera experience,” he says. Contrast
the Four Seasons Centre’s 2,000 seats with theatres in Chicago
and San Francisco that seat 3,500, and there’s no comparison.
“What’s so wonderful about it is that wherever you sit, the
sound comes to you, and the sound surrounds you,” he says.

此 外 , 新 興 的 網 絡 媒 體 也 在 幫 助 歌 劇 越 來 越 走 近 人 們 的
生 活 。 像 是 可 以 進 行 歌 劇 網 絡 直 播 的 YouTube 視 頻 網 站 , 還

Gifted
“People say that opera is the climax of the arts, because you
have to bring so many art forms together to do opera,” says
Neef. “It’s not only music, but also visual arts, theatre. I think
that’s what makes it more accessible, because you can come to
opera through different directions, through different doors.”
Neef ’s fascination
with opera began at a
young age, listening on
the radio in his small
hometown outside
Stuttgart, Germany.
Enamored by the
human voice, he saw
Fidelio — his first opera
— at age 13, a memory
that will never leave him,
and which also sparked
an unrelenting fervour.
With easy access to
many opera houses in
Germany, Neef attended
as often as possible. His admiration for classical culture paid
off unexpectedly one day as he met a man equally passionate
about opera who would inspire him to become the man he
is today.
“I think Gerard Mortier was one of the most important opera
leaders in the 20th century,” says Neef of his mentor, who
hired him as an opera administrator at the Salzburg Festival.
“What was so incredible about him was that he really loved
the art form,” says Neef of the opera visionary, whose students
have become today’s great directors, of which Neef is one.
“Sometimes you have people running opera companies that
act a little bit like politicians — it’s about power. But he really
loved opera, and he believed that it was important, that it
could make a difference for people to see an opera.”
Mortier’s approach was music to Neef ’s ears (and heart), a
legacy he continues today. Though Neef himself has never aspired
to sing — “You have to know your place,” he says — his
respect for singers’ talent resonates deeply throughout the centre,
a quality that may very well explain his ability to attract the
world’s best. This autumn, for example, the COC featured leading
sopranos such as
Jane Archibald, Sondra
Radvanovsky, Elza van
den Heever, and mezzo-soprano
Alice Coote.
“I have a lot of admiration
for singers
because they make a
difficult life choice,”
says Neef. “It influences
everything you
do. You have to be
careful about what you
eat, what you do the
night before and the
day of the opera. It’s a
very big commitment that they make for themselves, but also
for the audience, because, essentially, you decide to be someone
who gives to the audience. And I find that fascinating that
people make that choice still in the 21st century, that people
make that choice to be orchestra musicians, stage technicians,
or an opera singer, to give that gift to an audience.”

Blossoming
“I think in many ways, there’s more opera now in the world than
has ever been,” says Neef, noting its exponential growth in North
America over the last 50 years, with the art even expanding to
places where you couldn’t find it in the past, such as China.
Technology has had a hand in the art form’s expansion, making
it more accessible with live streaming, YouTube and social

which the consummate positive thinker sees as opportunities.
“Our biggest challenge is to reach out to a more diverse population,
a younger population, and give them a taste of it,” Neef
says. “For me, that’s probably the most fascinating part about
my work here, that I can be an ambassador for opera.”
Neef ’s contagious passion for opera follows him everywhere
he goes, even into a
cab, he says. He loves
sparking a conversation
with someone, like a
taxi driver, who’s never
experienced the raw,
soulful beauty of opera.
With Neef ’s boundless
sincerity and enthusiasm
of his beloved
art, he can turn anyone
into an eager new
patron, regardless of
their background.
“It’s fascinating to me
that opera is so powerful, that it goes beyond those lines of
culture and ethnic origin,” he says.
“If you look at the Greek tragedies,
it’s all about the big questions, it’s
about love, war and murder, things
that are important to society. Opera
is not about day-to-day politics — it’s
about the big themes and questions
in life.”
Transcendental
While the COC does include some contemporary works in its
repertoire, it mainly performs 19th-century operas, alongside
older operas, which continue to move people today as much as
they did centuries ago. What’s most essential, he believes, is to
create an operatic experience that gets people contemplating
about their own lives — the struggles, the solutions, and the
journey in between.
“If you look at the Greek tragedies, it’s all about the big
questions,” he says. “It’s about love, war and murder, things
that are important to society. Opera is not about day-to-day
politics — it’s about the big themes and questions in life.”

「 我 在 我 家 住 的 弄 堂 裏 是 很 出 名 的 , 從 來 不 出 去 跟 小 朋 友 們 玩
兒 , 唯 一 的 興 趣 就 是 在 家 裏 畫 畫 。」 章 翠 英 回 憶 說 , 在 她 小 學 四
年 級 時 , 學 校 裏 一 位 美 術 老 師 發 現 了 她 的 繪 畫 天 份 , 把 她 介 紹 給
了 國 畫 大 師 沈 子 丞 先 生 做 弟 子 。「 沈 老 當 時 已 經 年 近 七 十 了 , 他
悉 心 地 教 導 我 , 像 父 親 一 樣 。」 章 翠 英 坦 言 沈 子 丞 先 生 是 她 藝 術
What’s so foreign to me is not their dress from another time
— it’s their adoration. They stand, sit, soaking in the artist’s
plucks of the pipa, reverberating a culture kissed by gods for
many millenia. One man in a chair, listening with a sincerity, a
respect, that could quell any storm; a young girl’s grace, her presence,
perfect; others, hands clasped over hearts, leaning, swaying,
moved by the beauty of those four strings — I’m captivated by
their spirit. It’s quite a painting.
“Artists can paint good works only after their hearts are
cleansed through cultivation,” says Cuiying Zhang, one of the
world’s preeminent classical Chinese painters. Zhang’s journey
speaks through the rice paper on which she paints — a lifetime
of learning, hardship and heroism, stripping her of humanity’s
unwanted weights, revealing the soul of a culture too few remember
but adore when they do.
Beatrix, former Queen of the Netherlands, Naruhito, Crown
Prince of Japan, Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, and Leonid
Kuchma, former president of Ukraine, are among Zhang’s popular
patrons, each inspired by her universal stroke of genius that
makes us simultaneously more human, divine, alive. And now,

生 涯 中 最 重 要 的 一 位 老 師 , 不 僅 將 他 自 己 畢 生 的 國 畫 技 藝 傾 囊 相
授 , 更 教 會 了 她 做 人 的 道 理 和 作 為 一 位 畫 家 應 有 的 畫 德 。
「 沈 老 對 名 利 非 常 淡 泊 , 曾 有 人 重 金 請 他 教 畫 , 但 他 拒 絕
了 。 我 當 時 家 裏 沒 甚 麼 錢 , 但 老 師 覺 得 我 有 靈 氣 , 畫 畫 的 心 很
純 淨 , 分 文 不 取 地 教 我 。 還 曾 把 自 己 精 心 臨 摹 的 古 畫 給 我 拿 回

感 激 。 她 說 , 沈 老 一 直 教 導 她 臨 摹 一 些 古 代 中 國 畫 的 傳 世 之 作 ,
如 : 顧 愷 之 的 《 洛 神 賦 圖 》 卷 和 顧 閎 中 的 《 韓 熙 載 夜 宴 圖 》, 還
有 石 濤 的 山 水 畫 , 這 讓 她 從 中 受 益 良 多 。
「 那 時 沈 老 都 是 一 筆 一 筆 的 畫 給 我 看 , 一 條 線 條 其 中 的 濃
淡 變 化 , 婉 轉 曲 折 都 非 常 有 講 究 , 需 要 非 常 有 耐 心 , 屏 心 靜 氣 才
能 畫 好 。 否 則 , 就 會 讓 人 看 到 畫 中 帶 『 火 氣 』, 那 就 不 是 好 作 品
了 。 所 以 , 中 國 古 代 許 多 大 畫 家 都 是 修 行 之 人 , 有 修 佛 的 , 修 道

章 翠 英 一 直 跟 隨 沈 子 丞 先 生 學 畫 十 幾 年 , 甚 至 在 文 革 時
期 , 沈 老 被 下 放 至 蘇 州 附 近 的 農 村 , 章 翠 英 也 會 一 個 月 幾 次 從 上
海 坐 火 車 前 去 求 教 。 在 名 師 的 用 心 栽 培 和 自 己 的 勤 學 苦 練 之 下 ,
章 翠 英 二 十 幾 歲 便 引 起 了 許 多 中 國 書 畫 大 家 的 關 注 。 被 譽 為 「 一
身 精 三 藝 , 九 十 臻 高 峰 」 的 著 名 篆 刻 書 畫 家 錢 君 匋 先 生 曾 評 價
章 翠 英 的 畫 「 在 筆 墨 的 運 用 中 , 結 合 風 雨 晦 明 、 萬 象 出 沒 的 微
妙 , 爽 然 神 解 其 理 , 深 得 古 人 三 昧 。 因 此 , 她 的 山 水 畫 能 獲 致

移 民 海 外 幸 解 病 魔
1990 年 , 章 翠 英 隨 丈 夫 和 女 兒 移 民 至 澳 大 利 亞 開 始 了 新
的 生 活 。「 現 在 回 想 起 來 , 覺 得 自 己 挺 幸 運 。 那 時 中 國 國 內 畫
壇 的 風 氣 已 經 很 不 好 了 , 大 家 勾 心 鬥 角 、 爭 名 奪 利 , 那 些 我 做
不 來 。 正 好 有 機 會 到 海 外 清 淨 的 環 境 生 活 , 我 就 繼 續 每 天 在 家

「 那 時 我 走 路 都 很 困 難 , 也 不 能 久 坐 了 , 每 天 只 能 躺 在
家 裏 , 也 畫 不 了 畫 , 感 覺 簡 直 生 不 如 死 。 我 才 三 十 多 歲 啊 ! 藝
術 生 涯 就 這 麼 早 早 地 開 始 , 又 早 早 地 結 束 了 。」 萬 念 俱 灰 的 章
Zhang’s fight to save innocent lives — a mission
that risks her own — paints a picture of who she
really is and how she’ll be remembered long after
the paint on her rice paper dries.
First master
Zhang wasn’t born a master, though destiny’s diamonds
of determination, artistic dexterity, and
direction did clearly provide a path for her to follow.
“I was quite famous in my neighbourhood,” says
Zhang, the aptly nicknamed “crazy little painter,”
born in Shanghai. “I never played with other
children outside. My only interest was painting
at home.”
At age 4, Zhang was already impressing people
with her paintings — one in particular who
would change her life forever. This art teacher
at school recognized the little girl’s unique gifts
and decided she needed the mentorship of a master
equally charmed. So the teacher introduced

翠 英 在 病 痛 中 苦 苦 地 掙 扎 著 , 尋 訪 了 悉 尼 當 地 幾 乎 所 有 有 名 的 中
醫 和 西 醫 , 結 果 卻 絲 毫 看 不 到 療 效 。 直 到 有 一 天 , 她 的 丈 夫 偶 然
在 報 紙 上 發 現 了 一 則 廣 告 , 才 讓 她 看 到 了 一 線 生 機 。
「 我 還 記 得 那 天 我 先 生 回 來 很 興 奮 , 他 說 他 在 報 紙 上 看 到 有
一 種 叫 『 法 輪 功 』 的 氣 功 , 正 在 開 學 習 班 。 許 多 之 前 病 得 很 厲 害 ,
走 不 動 的 人 , 煉 了 這 個 功 , 走 路 都 變 得 像 飛 一 樣 了 。 我 當 時 並 不 相
信 甚 麼 氣 功 , 就 是 看 他 說 的 神 奇 , 就 想 去 看 看 吧 !」 章 翠 英 跟 著 丈
夫 一 起 去 了 學 習 班 , 進 去 時 , 那 裏
正 在 播 放 「 法 輪 功 」 創 始 人 李 洪 志
先 生 的 講 法 錄 像 。「 我 一 聽 到 那
些 法 理 , 立 刻 就 被 吸 引 住 了 , 感 覺
許 多 道 理 和 我 曾 經 學 畫 的 先 生 講
的 一 樣 , 像 是 吃 虧 就 是 賺 便 宜 , 不
要 看 重 名 利 啊 , 我 當 時 覺 得 講 得
真 好 啊 ! 在 看 完 錄 像 之 後 , 現 場 有
人 教 我 們 煉 功 動 作 。 前 四 套 是 動
功 , 第 五 套 是 打 坐 的 靜 功 。 我 還 記
得 , 當 我 學 第 一 套 功 法 時 , 有 個 伸
展 四 肢 抻 的 動 作 , 當 時 就 感 覺 好 像 打 通 了 血 脈 。 回 家 之 後 , 我 居 然
可 以 坐 得 住 了 。」
章 翠 英 告 訴 我 們 , 在 參 加 完 為 期 九 天 的 學 習 班 之 後 , 她 的 類
風 濕 關 節 炎 症 狀 奇 蹟 般 地 消 失 了 。「 我 真 的 走 路 像 飛 一 樣 了 , 真 是
太 神 奇 了 。」 因 禍 得 福 的 章 翠 英 像 許 多 中 國 古 代 的 書 畫 大 家 一 樣 ,
成 為 了 一 位 修 行 之 人 。 古 人 那 份 「 非 淡 泊 無 以 明 志 , 非 寧 靜 無 以 致
遠 」 的 超 然 境 界 也 從 古 畫 那 疏 朗 精 雅 的 筆 墨 中 , 空 靈 清 曠 的 意 境
中 , 實 實 在 在 來 到 了 章 翠 英 的 生 活 裏 。「 歷 史 上 中 國 畫 中 最 好 的 作
品 , 會 被 稱 作 『 神 品 』。 我 之 前 想 過 怎 樣 的 畫 才 是 『 神 品 』 呢 ?」 在
修 煉 了 法 輪 功 之 後 , 開 始 依 照 其 中 「 真 、 善 、 忍 」 法 理 來 要 求 自 己 的
章 翠 英 逐 漸 明 白 , 原 來 當 人 真 的 能 放 下 世 俗 間 的 名 利 得 失 , 真 的 能
在 精 神 層 面 尋 求 更 高 的 境 界 時 , 眼 中 所 見 的 世 界 會 更 為 廣 闊 深 遠 ,
拿 起 畫 筆 時 所 呈 現 的 景 觀 也 將 隨 之 變 化 。 所 謂 「 神 品 」 中 的 「 神 」
字 正 是 指 作 者 那 超 越 俗 世 凡 情 的 至 高 心 境 。
「 我 更 加 能 感 受 到 那 些 古 人 畫 作 裏 所 蘊 含 的 一 些 內 涵 , 這 些
都 是 隨 著 我 每 天 的 修 煉 而 自 然 提 升 的 。 我 們 的 功 法 講 『 無 求 而 自
得 』, 現 在 回 想 起 來 , 我 當 初 關 節 炎 會 好 的 那 麼 快 , 大 概 也 是 因 為
我 壓 根 沒 有 想 到 去 治 我 的 病 , 就 是 覺 得 師 父 講 得 有 道 理 , 自 己 願
意 去 做 吧 !」 章 翠 英 告 訴 我 們 , 她 特 別 喜 歡 功 法 中 的 打 坐 , 那 會 幫
助 她 達 到 平 和 寧 靜 的 狀 態 , 對 她 的 國 畫 創 作 尤 其 有 幫 助 。 正 當 章

painting.
“Mr. Shen was indifferent to fame and fortune,” Zhang says of
her most influential teacher, who treated her like a daughter. “My
family was not rich, but he taught me without asking any money,
just because he thought I was born with superb spirit and had a
pure heart for painting.”

“Mr. Shen showed me every stroke at that time,” Zhang says.
“He was particular about the light and dark, and the twists of
every stroke.” Shen’s tutelage was not simply classical in style,
his method was truly traditional. Many of China’s most famous
artists through history cultivated Buddhahood or the Tao,
understanding that the pursuit for artistic perfection began first
with refining themselves.
“You need much patience, concentration, and a tranquil mind
to make a good painting,” Zhang says, recalling her teacher’s wisdom.
“Otherwise, people will sense the ‘temper’ in the painting.”
Over a decade, Shen and Zhang formed a bond so strong even
a war couldn’t break it. During the Cultural Revolution — literally
a war on 5,000 years of China’s traditions and art — Shen
was exiled to the countryside of Suzhou. But that didn’t deter
Zhang from visiting him by train several times a month to continue
her study.
By her 20s, Zhang was drawing praise from masters as significant
as her own. Juntao Qian, a famous Chinese artist in his
90s known for seal carving, calligraphy, and Chinese painting,
heralded her as one of China’s most promising talents.

突 聞 噩 耗 踏 上 征 途
1999 年 7 月 20 日 , 中 共 當 局 突 然 發 動 了 對 法 輪 功 的 殘 酷 迫
害 。 當 章 翠 英 在 澳 大 利 亞 得 知 中 國 大 陸 的 法 輪 功 學 員 正 在 遭 受
抓 捕 、 關 押 和 酷 刑 折 磨 時 , 她 的 心 如 刀 絞 、 淚 水 漣 漣 。「 中 國
每 天 都 在 抓 人 , 媒 體 都 在 報 導 那 些 批 判 誹 謗 的 不 實 之 詞 。 當 我
聽 說 已 經 有 法 輪 功 學 員 被 打 死 的 時 候 , 我 再 也 沒 法 安 安 靜 靜 地
“Her paintings combine the subtlety of wind, rain, dimness,
brightness, and everything in the world,” said Qian. “She understands
well the principles of nature and has obtained the
essence of the ancient people.” The venerable artist described
her landscape paintings as having a quality of “transcending
delight,” comparing her to Wei Wang, the revered eighth-century
poet and landscape artist, and Tong Guan, the legendary landscape
painter of the Northern Landscape style during the Five
Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

中 領 館 前 向 他 們 申 訴 。」
在 悉 尼 的 中 領 館 前 靜 坐 了 一 段 時 間 之 後 , 章 翠 英 並 沒 有 得
到 想 要 的 回 應 。 而 與 此 同 時 , 中 國 大 陸 對 法 輪 功 的 迫 害 卻 愈 演
愈 烈 , 幾 乎 每 天 都 可 以 聽 到 有 中 國 學 員 被 迫 害 致 死 的 消 息 。 章
翠 英 覺 得 在 這 種 情 況 下 , 自 己 應 該 回 到 國 內 去 親 自 看 看 那 裏 的
情 況 , 如 果 有 機 會 能 向 中 共 當 局 講 述 自 己 的 經 歷 , 也 許 會 對 制
止 迫 害 起 到 一 定 的 作 用 。 想 到 這 裏 , 章 翠 英 報 名 參 加 了 一 個 前
往 中 國 的 旅 行 團 , 起 身 前 往 北 京 。
沒 想 到 的 是 , 在 章 翠 英 於 中 領 館 前 靜 坐 的 時 候 , 中 共 當 局 便
已 盯 上 了 她 。 抵 達 北 京 之 後 , 更 是 有 便 衣 一 直 跟 踪 , 並 在 章 翠 英
跟 隨 旅 行 團 來 到 天 安 門 廣 場 看 升 旗 時 , 將 她 抓 上 了 警 車 。「 他 們
對 我 拳 打 腳 踢 , 打 得 我 血 流 滿 面 。 然 後 , 我 被 遣 返 了 , 錢 被 他 們 搶
走 , 只 給 我 買 了 到 香 港 的 機 票 。」 抵 達 香 港 的 章 翠 英 身 無 分 文 , 無
法 返 回 澳 洲 。 此 時 , 恰 好 有 香 港 當 地 的 法 輪 功 學 員 準 備 前 往 大 陸
申 訴 , 章 翠 英 便 跟 隨 他 們 同 行 , 想 再 次 去 向 中 共 當 局 陳 情 。 誰 知 她
甫 一 入 境 , 就 又 被 抓 捕 。 這 次 中 共 當 局 沒 有 按 照 國 際 條 例 遣 返 章
翠 英 , 而 是 直 接 把 她 關 進 了 看 守 所 。
「 我 被 關 了 整 整 八 個 月 , 期 間 受 了 許 多 毆 打 和 折 磨 。 他 們 為 我
帶 上 死 刑 犯 的 手 銬 和 腳 鐐 , 剝 奪 我 的 睡 眠 , 強 迫 我 做 很 繁 重 的 工
作 , 還 曾 把 我 關 進 了 男 牢 房 。 我 曾 絕 食 五 十 多 天 抗 議 , 從 一 個 體 重
60 公 斤 的 小 胖 子 , 瘦 到 30 多 公 斤 。」 即 便 遭 到 了 這 樣 非 人 的 折 磨 和
迫 害 , 但 章 翠 英 說 自 己 從 未 感 到 過 後 悔 。「 我 覺 得 做 人 應 該 是 『 滴
水 之 恩 , 湧 泉 相 報 』, 法 輪 功 對 我 可 是 救 命 之 恩 ! 我 就 算 豁 出 性 命 ,
也 要 告 訴 他 們 法 輪 功 是 被 冤 枉 的 , 法 輪 功 是 好 的 。」
更 令 章 翠 英 感 到 痛 心 的 , 是 那 些 中 國 大 陸 法 輪 功 學 員 的 遭
遇 。「 我 是 澳 大 利 亞 公 民 , 澳 大 利 亞 領 事 館 每 週 都 有 人 來 看 望
我 , 要 求 釋 放 我 , 我 的 生 命 安 全 還 是 有 保 證 的 。 但 同 我 一 起 被 抓
的 中 國 大 陸 學 員 處 境 就 太 悲 慘 了 , 許 多 人 被 抓 之 後 , 遭 到 了 毒 打
和 殘 酷 的 折 磨 , 後 來 就 再 也 沒 有 了 消 息 。 還 有 人 被 綁 架 去 了 精 神
病 院 , 我 再 也 沒 有 見 過 他 們 。」
在 澳 大 利 亞 政 府 的 積 極 營 救 下 , 章 翠 英 最 終 得 以 回 到 悉
尼 , 她 用 畫 筆 將 自 己 在 中 國 的 親 身 經 歷 和 親 眼 所 見 描 繪 下 來 ,
這 成 為 了 揭 露 中 共 迫 害 法 輪 功 最 直 接 的 證 據 之 一 。「 在 親 身 經
歷 和 見 證 了 那 些 迫 害 之 後 , 換 作 別 人 我 不 知 道 會 發 生 甚 麼 樣 的
變 化 , 也 許 會 不 平 、 會 怨 恨 , 甚 至 一 生 都 難 以 平 復 。 但 這 些 情
緒 我 都 沒 有 , 這 應 該 是 之 前 的 修 煉 讓 我 對 自 身 的 得 失 看 得 比 較
淡 泊 吧 ! 我 回 來 之 後 身 體 和 精 神 都 恢 復 得 很 快 , 我 又 投 入 到 了
作 畫 之 中 。」
自 2001 年 以 來 , 章 翠 英 已 經 在 世 界 十 幾 個 國 家 舉 辦 了 個
人 巡 迴 畫 展 。 她 的 畫 作 曾 做 為 禮 品 被 贈 送 給 荷 蘭 女 王 貝 亞 特 麗
克 絲 、 日 本 皇 太 子 德 仁 、 俄 羅 斯 總 統 普 京 和 烏 克 蘭 總 統 庫 其 瑪
等 , 並 被 許 多 博 物 館 和 知 名 人 士 收 藏 。 對 此 , 章 翠 英 強 調 說 ,
好 的 作 品 是 從 身 心 的 歷 練 與 修 行 中 得 來 的 。 在 遭 遇 那 番 在 中 國
的 魔 難 之 前 , 她 的 畫 更 多 是 表 達 自 己 的 精 神 世 界 。 在 經 歷 了 八
個 月 地 獄 般 的 迫 害 之 後 , 她 現 在 作 畫 開 始 更 多 去 為 他 人 , 她 希
望 能 用 畫 筆 去 幫 助 那 些 依 然 在 中 國 遭 受 殘 酷 的 法 輪 功 學 員 , 同
時 也 能 將 傳 統 正 統 的 國 畫 藝 術 弘 揚 傳 承 下 去 , 不 辜 負 前 輩 們 對
她 的 辛 勤 栽 培 。 相 信 她 這 份 至 公 無 我 的 心 境 , 必 將 不 亞 於 古 人
那 份 遠 離 塵 囂 的 逍 遙 自 在 , 甚 至 注 定 將 會 為 傳 統 的 中 國 畫 賦 予
更 加 宏 大 深 厚 的 精 神 力 量 。
Taking flight
In 1990, Zhang immigrated to Australia with her husband and
daughter, excited to get away from the environment now so far
removed from the morality her mentors instilled in her.
“The atmosphere in the art field in China was already very
bad,” she says. “Artists schemed and fought against each other
for fame and profit, but I couldn’t.” The quietude of her new
home inspired a peaceful mind and space for painting. But her
serenity would soon be smashed, challenging her physically,
mentally, spiritually.
At the young age of 30, Zhang suffered from rheumatoid
arthritis, a condition where the immune system attacks the
lining of hundreds of joints.
“It was difficult for me to walk, and I could not sit for long,”
says the artist. “I could only lie at home, unable to paint. I felt
like I was just living death. My art career started so early but
then ended so early.”
Desperate, struggling, Zhang visited all the famous Chinese

and Western doctors in Sydney, but none could help. With a
stroke of luck — or a touch of fate, as the case may be — her
husband returned home one day with a boon.
“I still remember when my husband came home that day —
he was very excited,” she says. He explained that a new form of
qigong — a cultivation system refining morality in combination
with tai chi-like exercises — was being taught in town. “I didn’t
believe in qigong at that time, but it sounded marvelous.”
The practice, called Falun Gong, hit home
“When I listened to the principles, I was immediately attracted,”
says the master painter. “I felt many of the principles were like
what Mr. Shen taught me, such as to gain, you must suffer losses,
and don’t pay much
attention to fame and
profits. I felt that they
were such good principles.”
When she practiced
the first exercise, she
says, “I felt my occluded
vessels were cleared. After
I went home, I was
even able to sit.”
Nine days later, when
the workshop ended, a
new chapter in her life
began. “I really walked
as though I was flying,”
Zhang says, her rheumatoid arthritis completely healed. “It was
just so miraculous.”
Not only could Zhang paint again, she finally unraveled a
deeper essence of art.
“In history, the best works in Chinese painting were called
‘divine works.’ After practicing Falun Gong and following its
principles of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance, I could
understand the meaning behind those ancient paintings,” she
says. She more tangibly experienced that, as artists let go of
fame, gain and fortune, their spirits would ascend higher, transforming
their perspectives, and consequently, each brushstroke.
But again, a storm would come that she’d have to weather
with every ounce of her will.
More losses, more gains
On July 20, 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
launched a brutal persecution against Falun Gong. “Practitioners
in China were arrested every day,” says Zhang. “The media
reported fake, slanderous stories. When I learned that there
were Falun Gong practitioners tortured to death, I could no

longer quietly paint at home.” Every day, the painter peacefully
protested in front of the Chinese consulate in Sydney.
But the war waged on in China, and Zhang thought she
needed to do more. Since she was well-known as an artist
in China, she thought her inspirational story of how Falun
Gong cured her illness would sway the hearts of Beijing officials.
She was gravely mistaken.
When she arrived in Tiananmen Square as part of a tour,
police arrested her. “They punched and kicked me,” she says.
“I was bleeding all over my face, and they stole all my money.”
She learned later that Chinese spies had been tracking her
human rights efforts at the consulate in Sydney.
The CCP shipped her out of the mainland to Hong Kong,
but with no money to
return home to Australia,
Zhang was stuck.
She linked up with
local practitioners and,
knowing in her heart
the persecution was
inhumane and unjust,
Zhang joined them on
their way back to China
to appeal the religious
genocide. This
time, Zhang wasn’t
sent away.
“I was imprisoned for eight months and underwent a lot
of beating and torture,” she recalls, a sadly familiar story for
Falun Gong practitioners in China.
Despite the horror she experienced, Zhang never regretted
standing up for her belief and fellow believers, never forgetting
that Falun Gong had saved her life and art. What concerned
her most was the safety of her Chinese brethren who
weren’t protected by a democratic country.
“I am an Australian citizen, so my security was guaranteed,”
she says. “But local Chinese practitioners who were arrested
with me were miserable. After being beaten viciously and
tortured brutally, they have disappeared.”
Once rescued by the Australian government, Zhang
returned to Sydney with a renewed purpose. “My body and
spirit recovered soon after I came back,” she says. “So I put
myself into painting again.”
Zhang continues to tour the world with her works to honour
the legacy of her teachers, her ancestors, and, of course,
the innocent Falun Gong practitioners still persecuted today.
In essence, her reasons for painting now embody everything but
herself — a selfless journey, just as her mentors had taught.

Christmas is all about tradition. Except when it happens
in a rancher-style home in Rancho Santa Fe, ten
minutes from the southern California coast. Then, it’s all
about tradition — with a healthy dose of chic, modern
style thrown in for good measure.
“I’m extremely influenced by history,” says Leanne Michael,
principal of Leanne Michael L U X E Lifestyle design. “I
try to design with things that are timeless and classic, and
can be used year after year after year,” all of which explains
the designer’s penchant for holiday work — something
she’s been doing for clients for over 20 years.
Fitting a sense of history and tradition into this client’s
distinctly modern layout, however, was a bit more of a
challenge. So instead of looking to the spirit of Christmas
past, Michael took inspiration from the owners’ second
home in Montana. “I wanted [the design] to feel a little
more mountain-esque, but not fight with the architecture
of the home,” she says. “I thought: maybe I can blend the
two together, and give them that Montana-type of Christmas
in a modern home.”

Designer Leanne Michael brought fresh cut Magnolia to create a rich Christmas
experience for both eyes and nose. Found objects such as an antique snow
shovel and burnished lanterns are a tasteful nod to Christmas tradition.

Take a look at the rooms, and you’re struck by how cohesive
the design is: a sense of whimsical holiday imagination comes
together with the home’s existing decor in a way that’s playful
and sophisticated at the same time.
A big part of the success is the design’s antique metallic palette:
silver and gold, with accents of brown and persimmon to
complement the existing colour scheme of the house. “It’s such a
simple, lovely, classic palette,” Michael says. “And it’s something
they can always add to. So it’s an ever-growing process, which is
quite nice, but it doesn’t take away from the decor of the room.”
The architecture of the home was not without its challenges
— particularly in the large family room, with its high ceilings
and large fireplace. “To make something that big and that vast
cozy, it’s definitely a challenge,” says Michael. “How was I going
to bring those soffits alive, because it’s a lot of negative space.”
The solution: a design with a distinctly narrative feel, much
like you’d see in a storefront window: fresh cedar boughs evoke
holiday memories; delicately wrapped presents seem to beg for
a child to unwrap them; taxidermied geese seem ready to fly
around the tree. “I [treated] it almost as if I were displaying in a

They’re all little vignettes — [giving] a Christmas woodland
type of feeling.”
At the centre of those stories stands the tree: in this case, a
23-foot-high noble fir (fresh, not artificial), elegantly decorated
with crisp ribbon and dozens of silver mercury glass ornaments.
“Please don’t ask me how many lights were on it — because I
don’t remember — but it’s a lot!” Michael says. “We had to add
extra amps so that we could have a tree that’s not going to blow
up the house.”
Other rooms are more subtly decorated — a ribbon-laced
garland here, a hand-crafted wreath there — in order not to
detract from the family room. And there, above the massive
seven-foot fireplace in the formal living room, the item that
encapsulates Michael’s entire approach, the perfect example of
the blend of traditional style and modern panache that defines
the design: the peacock perched on the gilded mirror.
“He was our mascot for quite a number of years,” Michael
says. “Once we put him up on that mirror, it just made that
room come alive. He’s just the star — he really is.”

There aren’t many things that will make you braver in the kitchen
than knowing how to craft the holiday season’s perfect British
treat — mince or Christmas pies. Initially filled with meat, these
holiday favourites have been relished since the 13th-century Crusaders,
who returned from the Holy Land with more than just their
lives. They brought back spices and popular Middle Eastern cooking
methods combining meats, fruits and spices. In tune with the holiday
spirit, some even say today that three of the main spices — cinnamon,
cloves and nutmeg — signify the three Wise Men who came to bless
Jesus after his birth, while the crust was often traditionally made in
an oval shape, symbolic of his manger. One thing is for certain, if
you follow our three-part recipe, your delectable pies will be the
tea-time dessert friends and family demand every Christmas.

Dry fruits :
½ cup Thompson raisins
½ cup figs
½ cup dates
½ cup sweetened cranberries
½ cup sweetened cherries
⅓ cup candied papaya spears (or other candied fruits)
½ cup chopped walnuts
½ cup chopped almonds
In a large pot, put in all the ingredients in listed order (the butter,
brown sugar, apple juice, spices, fruits and nuts). Bring mixture
to a boil, stir, lower the heat and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes
to reduce liquid. Add an additional splash of apple juice or
brandy, about ¼ cup. Let cool. Put into a covered container and
store in the refrigerator.
Part 2: Pastry
⅔ cup almond flour
1 cup rice flour
½ cup corn flour
½ cup sugar
¼ teaspoon baking powder
8 tablespoons salted butter
6 tablespoons heavy cream
1 egg yolk
Mix the rice flour, corn flour and baking powder in a big bowl. Add
the butter, then rub into the flour mixture using your fingertips to
make a light breadcrumb texture. Stir in almond flour. Whip the
cream with the egg yolk until creamy, and add this to the flour-butter
mixture. Mix gently until the dough starts to get sticky. Make a
ball (add a bit of cold milk if it’s too dry). Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Part 3: Frangipane
6 tablespoons butter
½ cup sugar
1 large egg
1 tablespoon almond flavour (or amaretto)
⅔ cup almond flour
1 tablespoon rice flour
¼ teaspoon baking powder
Cream the butter with the sugar. Add the egg and the almond
flavour. Gradually stir in the rice flour, almond flour and baking
powder until the mixture is smooth. Preheat oven to 350°F and
grease a 12-hole muffin tin. Roll out the pastry to 5mm thick.
Using an 8cm cutter, cut out circles of pastry and press gently
into your tin. Spoon a teaspoon of vegetarian mincemeat (part 1)
into each pastry circle and level. Spoon a teaspoon of frangipane
(part 3) atop the mincemeat and level again. Bake for 25 minutes
or until golden brown. Cool for a few minutes in the tin and
transfer to a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar.

Palm Trees are a little harder to decorate than
Christmas trees, but almost 25 years ago, my
family opted to trade white snow for white sand
beaches and I, for one, have never looked back. The
holidays can be stressful, and their onslaught occurs
earlier every year. So we decided to leave it all behind,
take the family, and relax in the Caribbean.
You know — where flights don’t get cancelled due to
blizzards. Miami. And from there you take a short
flight to any of these marvellous destinations.
Holiday traditions are important, especially when
you have little ones excited to see Santa. But with a little
effort, not only did we keep the traditions we wanted,
such as a nice Christmas Eve dinner and presents
from the jolly one the next morning, but we were able
to incorporate so many new ones from the different
islands that each celebrate in their own way. And it’s
simply impossible not to smile when you hear Christmas
carols on a steel drum.

Get into the holiday spirit with local festivals
Centred around religion, colonial heritage, or longstanding
tradition, many of the islands have unique festivals that are
welcoming for tourists and locals alike. Every Boxing Day and
New Year’s Day, the lively Junkanoo parade dances a colourful
route through the capital of Nassau in the Bahamas. This carnival-style
parade features groups of brightly costumed dancers,
and music that lasts until morning. Other islands, such as St.
Kitts and Trinidad and Tobago, celebrate with J’ouvert festivities
of the traditional West African/Caribbean carnival, where
calypso and soca music are played until long after sunrise, and
kings and queens are crowned.
The Dutch island of Curaçao celebrates Christmas with
Sinterklaas, Holland’s version of Santa Claus, and his helper
Zwarte Piet. The pair arrives in Willemstad by boat to deliver
presents and candy to the children who in return offer carrots
for Sinterklaas’ horses. The U.S. Virgin island of St. Croix gets
into the holiday spirit with the Caribbean’s biggest boat parade,
featuring locals’ boats whimsically decorated, with Christmas
lights, music, and fireworks.

Pure relaxation on Christmas Day and Boxing Day
When you’re not dancing through the streets at these
sometimes month-long parties, remember that most
of the islands celebrate Christmas and Boxing Day at
home with family. Most stores and some attractions
in town are closed, so now is your chance to relax! The
hotels and resorts put together extravagant or traditional
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing
Day spreads, so worry about one less thing when all
you have to do is make a reservation. My family had
a tradition of finding something crazy to do Christmas
Day like parasailing in Aruba or snorkelling off
the coast of Dominica from a catamaran. Or you can
choose to feel like the only family in the universe at
a remote, pristine beach like Harrismith in Barbados,
only accessible by stone steps carved out of the cliffside
and perfect for pure relaxation and adding to your
shell collection.

Round out the holiday season with a decadent New Year’s Eve
No island does New Year’s Eve quite like St. Barths. Superyachts
of the rich and famous swarm Gustavia port and anchor all
around in anticipation of the fireworks display over the beach.
At night, all the yachts turn on their downlights into the depths,
which looks like a throng of fireflies surrounding the coastline.
Hotels book up months in advance, but those in the know reserve
chic villas like those at Le Sereno, which have private pools and
ocean views. The parties on shore at perennial hotspots of Le Ti
and Eden Rock let you dance the night away grooving to DJs
flown in from all over the world, and if you’re lucky, you can look
over at the Jimmy Buffett cover band at Baz Bar only to realize
it’s the man himself jamming with his buddies!

At midnight, you hear the volley of a
great cannon from the castle rampart
followed by a dazzling fireworks display.
You put down your wee dram of scotch to
link arms with your friends and family as
the entire nation sings a rendition of Auld
Lang Syne. What a way to enter a new year!
But this is only a small part of the celebration
in Edinburgh.
No one rings in the New Year quite like
the Scots. The folks of Edinburgh have
been celebrating Hogmanay for centuries.
The custom dates back to Viking times to
celebrate the winter solstice, but the festivities
have since grown to encompass many traditions,
which last three days.

The torchlight procession is the official opening of Hogmanay.
The Up Helly Aa Vikings lead over 8,000 torch-bearers, pipers,
and drummers to create a river of fire and illuminate the city as
they walk from the Old Town to the ancient meeting ground of
Calton Hill. Here the revelry culminates with a sound and light
show and fireworks display.

All of Edinburgh celebrates New Year’s Eve with massive
outdoor concerts and fetes across the city. Revelers gather at
the Concert in the Gardens on Princes Street for their annual
music festival. This year, the headliners are the English indie
rock band The Charlatans, which will play against the stunning
backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Those seeking more traditional
Scottish music and dancing should head to Parliament Square
for the Céilidh, where masters will be on hand to instruct dance
and keep you moving into the new year.
The Midnight Moment rings out with bells around the city
and cannon fire from the castle. The fireworks display is extravagant
as across the country family and friends link arms for the
singing of Auld Lang Syne. Originally a Robert Burns poem,
this tune has become synonymous with the celebration of New
Years the world over.

Nothing clears the cobwebs from a night of revelry quite like a
dash through a freezing river. Enter the Loony Dook, an annual
plunge into the River Forth at South Queensferry. Now in its
31st year, Dookers parade through the High Street before taking
to the freezing water, all in costume. And when they get out
of the frosty depths, Stoats Porridge is there to hand out warm,
hearty porridge to participants. “At the event, we give out over
1,000 bowls of porridge,” says Olivia Stone from Stoats. “And
despite the indulgences of the night before, the most popular
topping is Whisky & Honey!” Stoats also hosts a costume contest
and many of the participants use this event as an opportunity
to raise money for charity.

While you’re there
While the New Year’s celebrations are a perfect
reason to visit Edinburgh, this charming city has
so much else to offer while you’re there. Take some
time to shop the boutiques on Victoria Street
to stock up on the traditional tweed fashions of
Walker Slater or vintage hardbacks at The Old
Town Bookshop, and scale the Scott Monument,
a gothic commemoration dedicated to novelist and
poet Sir Walter Scott, to get the best views of the city.
And no visit to Scotland is complete without
indulging in a fine single malt to help you stay
warm during this time of year. Enjoy a wee dram
from the Islay, Speyside, and Highland regions
of the country at the Scotch Whisky Experience,
which boasts the largest whisky collection in the
world. And after all the Hogmanay celebrations
come to an end, rest your head at the stately Balmoral
Hotel and enjoy waking up to a New Year.
