Lyme Disease Update
As Infection Spreads Across the Country,
Health Authorities Fail to Protect the Public
BY HELKE FERRIE
MP Elizabeth May’s Bill C-442, the
Federal Framework on Lyme Disease
Act, legally requires internationally
recognized diagnostic tests and
treatment protocols, the development
of proper medical surveillance
to track Lyme Disease incidence and
costs, and education and awareness
to make Canadian doctors more
Lyme-literate. Yet the federal Public
Health Agency’s newly minted
“Draft Framework” on Lyme, is in
direct contravention of Bill C-442.
“A Lyme diagnosis is a clinical diagnosis when you make
it, and then it becomes a political statement. It is the 300-
pound gorilla in the waiting room.” – Bob Giguere, of the
U.S.-based IGeneX laboratories, at the Lyme Out Loud
Kids Canada conference, April 21, 2017
The recently released government document entitled
“Lyme Disease in Canada – A Draft Federal
Framework,” is an insult to all of us Canadians who’ve paid
for it with our tax dollars.
Crafted by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the document,
released in February 2017, proposes a framework
for the diagnosis and treatment of Canadians infected by
Lyme Disease (LD). In order to create a framework that
draws from the best available scientific research, the Public
Health Agency had hosted a public conference on Lyme
Disease from May 15 to 17, 2016. Problem is, the insights
that were gained from global experts who lectured at the
conference did not find their way into the draft federal
framework released in February. In fact, the proposed
“Draft Framework” is so peculiar and out of touch with the
facts that one can only conclude that the Public Health
Agency had already drafted the document before the conference
even took place.
More specifically, the framework contains two total
affronts to those in the LD community:
1It claims that Canada follows the guidelines of the
IDSA (Infectious Disease Society of America) – however,
the IDSA is currently still developing their recommendations,
as all medical guidelines must now meet the
standards of the World Health
Organization (WHO) and Institute of
Medicine (IOM). The IDSA’s previous
guidelines led to a 2006 antitrust investigation
by the Connecticut Attorney General
because they were written to benefit the
insurance industry and did not reflect current
science or patient needs. The authors
of these ‘guidelines’ themselves were
shown to be owners of vaccine patents (no
human vaccines exist to date), receiving
million-dollar consultation fees from
insurance companies in return for recommendations
that would make LD difficult
or impossible to be covered. Some of these
authors have even been sued by Lyme
patients for neglect and injury. The patents
and payments are listed in the April 2001
report put out by Lyme Disease
Association, Inc., which spans no less than
42 pages. (For a full legal analysis of the
conflicts of interest in the IDSA’s nowdefunct
guidelines, read J. Ferguson’s brilliant
Cure Unwanted?)
By contrast, the International Lyme and Associated
Diseases Society (ILADS) has comprehensive diagnostic
and treatment guidelines in place, and their latest version
already meets the standard established by the WHO and
IOM. They are, in fact, the only guidelines available today.
Nonetheless, neither the Health Canada nor Public Health
website even mentions ILADS, but both assert they follow
the IDSA guidelines.
2
The
proposed Public Health framework for Lyme
Disease concludes by stating that the issue will be
revisited in five years. Thus, the roughly 35,000 Canadians
who are newly infected every year, as estimated by the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control, are left with nowhere to turn.
Lyme is an infection that can become chronic (as more than
700 peer-reviewed mainstream publications agree) and is
known to lead to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, inflammatory
bowel disease, some forms of schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis,
and ALS – all of which are very expensive to treat
with the outdated protocols used by Canada’s Medicare system.
Yet in some cases, these conditions have been shown
to be curable by antibiotic treatments as per the protocols of
ILADS for treating Lyme Disease. For ILADS, all of these
conditions are expected to be part of a differential diagnosis
– that is, physicians must first rule out Lyme infection
before proceeding with any other treatment.
Canada’s Public Health Agency allowed for less than a
month of public comment about their document, yet more
than 9,000 furiously protesting Lyme patients wrote within
the first couple of days of the framework’s publication, and
6 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

almost 40,000 signed a petition to the federal health minister,
Jane Philpott, demanding that the framework be
scrapped. Protest marches in Ottawa and other cities are
now being planned (see organizations cited in the
Resources below to participate). In the House of
Commons, the NDP demanded the document’s removal.
The Public Health Agency appears to have anticipated
this backlash and took defensive action by publishing an
article in PLOS One, one of the few remaining respected
medical journals. Claiming to compare the “accuracy of
diagnostic tests of Lyme Disease in humans,” and describing
the paper as a “systematic review and meta-analysis of
North American research,” study authors L.A. Waddell et
al., employees of the Public Health Agency, submitted the
article to PLOS in August 2016. They were thus able to
claim that their framework for handling the Lyme problem
was supported by a rigorous comparative study of the best
available science.
Lyme Patient Support Group
Disputes Validity of Government Report
CanLyme, Canada’s national Lyme patient support group,
published an analysis of this study on January 30, 2017, by
Sin Hang Lee of the Milford Diagnostics Laboratory,
developer of an accurate DNA-based test for Lyme. In it,
Lee showed how – by cherry-picking certain tests, excluding
others, and ignoring the connections between early LD
symptoms and illnesses like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s –
the aforementioned comparisons become meaningless.
The Public Health authors also assert that the diagnostic
“gold standard” is the isolation of the disease-causing
pathogen in a blood sample. Not so, as Lee informs us:
“The gold standard in molecular identification of bacteria
is bacterial DNA genome sequencing.” Lee compares the
process to a Xerox copier generating a large number of
copies of a questionable paragraph with only a few words
available at the beginning and end. DNA sequencing is
designed to actually decipher the order (sequence) of the
alphabets (nucleotide bases) of the paragraph in question.
“Waddell et al. avoided mentioning DNA sequencingbased-assays
for Lyme disease to justify their own onesided
endorsement of serological tests,” said Lee. Well, of
course! Health Canada’s website strongly discourages PCR
testing without offering a single reference. If the tests Lee
refers to were available in Canada, we would actually be
getting somewhere!
The Waddell et al. authors state that PCR tests, as
described by Lee, are commercially available “but have not
been licensed for use by a governing body.” In fact, “laboratories
performing PCR tests are licensed by the State
Department of Public Health.” Interested Vitality readers
can see the entire analysis of this document, as posted on
CanLyme’s website. As Lee concludes, “The first step to
the Lyme disease solution is to cut out the tribalism among
the scientists whose careers were built on Lyme disease
8 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

esearch.” Lee is too polite to add that some of those scientists’
careers were provided with financial incentives, and
reversals would result in a loss of reputation and money.
One thing is certain: the Public Health Agency’s ‘study’
constitutes a gargantuan betrayal of public trust. How this
carefully orchestrated nonsense made it past PLOS’ editors
remains a mystery.
Proudly Canadian
Lyme Disease Conference Brought Together
Experts from Around the World
Turning away from the February 2017 document released
by Public Health that presented a woefully inadequate
“framework” for treating Lyme Disease, and towards the
excellent May 2016 conference which preceded the document,
we are left to wonder how such a remarkable event
gave rise to such an inadequate government report.
Hosted by the Public Health Agency of Canada, on
behalf of the Minister of Health, the “Conference to
Develop a Federal Framework on Lyme Disease” brought
together numerous speakers including world-renowned
Lyme experts Brian Fallon of Columbia University and
Elizabeth Maloney of the American College of Physicians
and Surgeons. These two had actually contributed to the
2010 book I edited and co-wrote, Ending Denial, which
was one of the information sources that prompted MP
Elizabeth May to introduce her federal Bill on Lyme. MP
May’s Bill C-442 legally requires internationally recognized
diagnostic tests and treatment protocols, the development
of proper medical surveillance to track Lyme
Disease incidence and costs, and education and awareness
to make Canadian doctors Lyme-literate. As May stated at
the 2016 conference: “We must put an end to the status
quo, in which sick Canadians are forced to go to the U.S.
for treatment at their own expense, losing homes, savings,
and pensions.”
Everyone ought to read the conference summary, which
is available online. Among other things, the report correctly
states that:
– “Canada’s medical system has failed Lyme disease
patients” and currently available tests are inadequate;
– Canada requires testing for co-infections and multiple
strains of Lyme bacteria (more than 300 variants);
– the incidence of LD is underreported (even though
reporting has been legally mandatory since 2009).
– spouses and other family members of every suspected
Lyme patient must be tested properly, because LD can be
“transmissible sexually, via saliva and breast milk, blood,
and organ donation.” (Note: all Western countries except
Canada require blood donors to answer a rigorous questionnaire
to exclude the possibility of active or past LD.)
On a positive note, a significant portion of the conference
summary is devoted to envisioning a successful
approach to LD in Canada. This includes the need to consult
veterinarians, who are already effectively treating animals
for Lyme.
10 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

One measure of success was identified as the renewal of
“trust in the medical system.” And my jaw dropped when I
read that “coroners should be required to submit tissue
samples [from] … patients who died of Parkinson’s or
Alzheimer’s,” recognizing that Lyme can cause these diseases,
too. The Public Health Agency appears to have
reached that stage of research knowledge.
Dr. Gregory Taylor, chief officer of Public Health,
observed in his concluding remarks last May: “If we are not
helping individual Canadians, we are not making a difference
in their lives, then we are not doing our job.”
Where Do Lyme Disease Sufferers
Go From Here?
So, now what? If you have suffered from Lyme Disease,
like I and several members of my family have, you are
fully justified in feeling frustrated by the federal Public
Health Agency’s current back-peddling. However, now
that Public Health has had that conference and the truth
about one of the world’s most exponentially increasing
infectious diseases has been acknowledged and published,
the information can’t be denied. For the first time in this
four-decade long disaster story, just about all of the once
“controversial” information has been acknowledged as
fact, and facts have an uncanny way of not disappearing
once they are let out.
Another important fact is that Canadians can currently
only be healed from LD by going elsewhere: to the U.S., to
Europe, or even to India – and, of course, they must pay for
it themselves. Meanwhile, we must continue to fight here
against the aforementioned irresponsible “authorities” and
stop them from subverting the public interest.
Nutrients for Improving Cognitive
Function in Lyme Disease
by Connie Strasheim
When I first became ill with Lyme disease
in 2004, I could barely read
books, never mind write them as I do
now. I left a fiction novel unfinished
because I could no longer string two
sentences together. And that was only
the start of the cognitive problems that
I would battle with Lyme disease.
I used to walk around in a daze, unaware of time and how
long it would take me to do things. I would routinely lose
my car in parking lots, and occasionally have to call a friend
or family member to pick me up – from malls, movie theatres,
and other places with large lots. I would “space out”
for hours as I tried to recall the next thing on my to-do list.
I got into two car accidents within a year of becoming sick,
because I couldn’t process what was happening on the road
fast enough. I even once stood in an aisle of a retail store
for three hours as I went back-and-forth trying to decide
which coat to buy. I routinely made poor decisions, forgot
the names of even my closest friends, and couldn’t carry on
a prolonged conversation, never mind remember one. I
14 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

cringed whenever others launched into detailed stories, and
my brain shut down in any situation that required abstract
reasoning.
My experience isn’t unusual. Many, if not most, people
with chronic Lyme disease battle cognitive dysfunction that
creates debilitating symptoms, such as difficulties with
focus, concentration, word finding, decision-making, reasoning
and analysis, as well as short-term memory loss.
The dysfunction occurs for many reasons, such as the
presence of Lyme neurotoxins in the brain, which cause
inflammation; the destruction of neurons and dysfunctional
firing between the neurons, damage to brain and other
nervous system tissue, hormone and neurotransmitter dysfunction,
reduced blood flow and oxygen to the brain, nutritional
deficiencies, food allergies, blood-sugar imbalances
and more. Most of these problems are caused either directly
or indirectly by Lyme disease-related infections such as
Borrelia, Babesia and Bartonella, as well as by some of the
common Lyme disease co-conditions such as mould and
yeast infections, and heavy metal toxicity.
The good news is, there are ways to mitigate symptoms
of cognitive dysfunction, which I share here.
The obvious first step is to remove the infections and toxins
from the body, but this can take many months or years,
and in the meantime, people with Lyme disease need to be
able to function. When I discovered that I could no longer
write without great difficulty, I began to research nutrients
that would restore my cognitive abilities, because, as a
writer, I couldn’t afford for my brain to not work. It took me
years to find real solutions, but as I healed, I slowly began
to recover many of the functions that I had lost, including
my ability to read and write.
Today, 12 years after I first became ill, I still suffer from
short-term memory loss and struggle at times to focus,
organize and concentrate, but my symptoms have greatly
improved. I can read and write at least twice as fast as I did
a decade ago, and have since written and published eleven
medical and/or health-related books. I get things done a lot
more efficiently and effectively and no longer wander
around in a fog most of the time. I don’t have to labour to
stay engaged in conversations, and I get lost less frequently
whenever I drive or park my car.
that we didn’t have space to publish here. To read the entire
Call me a sourpuss, if you will, but
I love vinegar and can’t imagine a
day going by without calling upon
one type or another for cooking, curing,
or cleaning purposes.
Vinegar gets its name from the
Latin vinum acetum, or “wine turned
sour”, and is one of the oldest condiments
in the world. It is believed to
have been discovered by accident –
wine was exposed to air and voila,
“sour wine”. Too tart to drink, too
precious to throw away, creative
experimentation proved that soured
wine has fascinating properties – one
of them being the ‘power to pickle’!
Ancient Egyptians and Chinese
reputedly used vinegar thousands of
years before Christ, and its use is
mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments. Traces of
vinegar were discovered in an Egyptian vessel dating back
10,000 years. Babylonians used it for cleaning and preserving
food, and Roman legionnaires drank vinegar before battle
– believing it gave them strength and courage. After the
fighting was over, vinegar was applied as a disinfectant to
cleanse wounds inflicted by swords.
Apple Cider Vinegar
During my childhood, when the need arose for healing tonics
and homegrown remedies, my grandmother taught me to
reach for a jug of pure apple cider vinegar. If you don’t
make your own apple cider vinegar, it’s easy to find at your
local health food store – the kind
made from local, fermented, organically
grown apples is best.
Cider vinegar is described in
Grandma’s old doctoring journals as
being a useful tonic for many ails
including cold, ‘flu, sore throat, and
stuffy head. It is also good for flushing
impurities from the kidneys,
bladder, and liver.
Studies have indicated that apple
cider vinegar helps relieve arthritic
pain when taken orally or applied as a
The Wonderful World of Vinegar
History, folklore, and medicinal uses of the world’s most
popular fermented flavourings – from A to V
~ BY LINDA GABRIS
Apple cider vinegar is a folklore tonic with
a history of alleviating everything from
arthritis to constipation to insomnia
hot compress. And wrapping a twisted
ankle or sprain with a cloth that’s
been soaked in cider vinegar can
reduce swelling.
Apple cider vinegar is also a useful
remedy for insomnia, constipation,
nervousness, muscle cramps,
and more. Grandma’s scribblers testify
that it can be used to expel intestinal
worms when given internally, or
to get rid of head lice by dissolving
nests with a cider vinegar hair rinse.
(Editor’s note: According to naturopathic
doctors Paul and Patricia
Bragg, authors of Apple Cider
Vinegar: Miracle Health System,
potassium-rich cider vinegar is a
time-tested natural remedy used by
their family for treating arthritis,
chronic fatigue, and constipation. See resource list at end.)
Balsamic, Wine, and Mirin Vinegars
Over the years, I have become a connoisseur of more exotic
types of vinegar for dressing up meals. In my view, any
cook can go from being good to gourmet simply by keeping
an aromatic bottle or two of specialty vinegars close at
hand. Unlike my rural grandmother, I have easy access to
markets that offer vinegars from around the world. One of
my favourite is balsamic vinegar from Italy.
Traditional balsamic – is made from white Trebbiano
grapes and aged (up to 100 years) in a succession of barrels
made out of different woods, each instilling a particular
flavour and aroma to the vinegar,
thus its magical taste and pricier tag.
Malt vinegar – with its English
roots, is fermented out of barley and
els with plenty of time to
mature naturally. Reds and
sherry vinegars are aged
longer than whites. When
purchasing, look for those
derived from organic wines.
Mirin – Some of the most
interesting vinegars are those
with Oriental origins made
from glutinous rice, such as
the award-winning, doublefermented
and twice distilled,
organic Mirin – a
thick, golden sweet vinegar
that’s said to be one of the
purest in the world and can
actually be sipped like saké.
(Editor’s note: In TCM
herbal therapy, fermented
rice vinegars are used to treat
conditions similar to those
addressed by apple cider
vinegar.)
White Vinegar – Due to
its high acidity levels, white
vinegar is best used only for
housecleaning purposes.
When shopping for vinegar,
use the same guidelines
as for fine wine. Good
organic vinegar should have
a sharp, clean taste and
pleasant bouquet. It should
never be cloudy, smell like
alcohol, or leave an unpleasant
aftertaste. Like wine, it
must be kept tightly corked
in a cool place. Most vinegars
today are 5% acetic
acid, except balsamic, which
ideally is 6%.
Vinegar Medicine
Studies have indicated that
unpasteurized, organic, apple
cider vinegar is a powerful
detoxifying and purifying
agent that provides the body
with a range of minerals
including potassium, phosphorus,
sodium, magnesium,
calcium, chlorine, sulfur and
iron, as well as a number of
essential vitamins and betacarotene.
This slow-fermented elixir is reputed
to help prevent high blood pressure by
thinning the blood (do not use if you’re
taking blood thinning medication); it
also helps maintain healthy blood sugar
levels as well as regulating metabolism
(thus is beneficial in achieving and
maintaining weight loss).
In the Kitchen
Rosemary, Thyme, and Lavender are
fragrant herbs ideal for infusing in vinegar
Old World Wilts – Grandma always
packed a ‘wilt’ in her picnic basket
because she claimed that beneficial
enzymes in cider vinegar could destroy harmful bacteria.
So if by chance anything got tainted in the sun, the wilt
would ward off illness. I like wilts because they are refreshingly
good, versatile, and easy to make. Just shred lettuce,
cabbage, dandelion leaves, spinach, cucumber, or a mix of
greens, and put in earthen or glass bowl. Bring one part
cider vinegar to two parts water to a boil, then remove from
heat and add a glob of honey. Pour over greens and let steep
until cold. Drain before serving.
Light, Bright Salads – Cut down or eliminate oil by simply
tossing greens with a shake of store-bought or homemade
herbal vinegar. Making your own is as easy as pairing a herb
with a vinegar and finding a neat little bottle with a tight fitting
cork. (Recipes follow.)
Guilt-Free Desserts – In Italy it is
common practice to dip fresh strawberries
into a little bowl of balsamic
vinegar before eating. This is truly a
must-try treat. Unlike traditional
chocolate or caramel dunks, balsamic
vinegar actually draws out and
enhances flavour rather than masking
it. Try sticking other fruits like banana
slices, apple wedges, or peach or pear
slices on toothpicks and dipping in
balsamic for exciting variety.
Thirst Quencher – Stir a tablespoon of apple cider or
fruit vinegar (see recipe below) into iced water for a tantalizing
thirst quencher (said to regulate body temperature
and clear up a bad complexion).
Diva Dip – Cider, balsamic, or herbal vinegars poured
into the dip bowl make a delightfully light substitute for
sour cream, mayonnaise, and other fatty dips. Dunk veggies
in the dip to your heart’s content.
Getting the Most Out of Soup Stocks – Adding a squirt
of white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar – about two
tablespoons per pound of bones – to a stock pot filled with
meat helps to leach valuable calcium from the bones. There
will be no sour taste in this calcium-rich broth.
Potassium-Rich Tea – If your
stamina is weak, you may need
more potassium in your diet. One
teaspoonful of cider vinegar per
cup of herbal tea is a good remedy
for restoring stamina. A dash in
place of lemon perks up tea.
Salt Substitute – Fill a smallholed
salt shaker with cider, malt,
or herbal vinegar and use in place
of salt on raw onions, tomatoes,
poached eggs, steamed vegetables,
pasta, or anything else that normally
draws you to the shaker.
When not in use, keep shaker
tightly capped in the refrigerator.
Making Your Own
Fruit and berryinfused
vinegars are easy to
make, and capture the
flavours of the season
• HERB VINEGAR: Gather a
few sprigs of fresh garden herbs;
the more you use the stronger it will be. Try fresh basil, dill,
rosemary, sage, tarragon, thyme, mint, chives, or whatever
is handy in your herb patch. Wash the herbs, pat dry, and
place in sterilized bottle. Fill the bottle with apple cider,
malt, or wine vinegar or blend of vinegars you desire. Let
steep for two weeks, then it’s ready to use, either strained or
as is. Peeled garlic cloves, shallots, peppercorns, chilis,
juniper berries, or other spices and seasonings can be
added.
• FRUIT VINEGAR: Use raspberry, cranberry, blueberry,
or choice of fruit in place of herbs. Create unique
flavours by adding orange peel, lemon zest, pomegranate
seeds, nutmeg pod, cinnamon stick or other sweet things to
the bottle. For the best in fruit-infused vinegar, use white
wine or champagne vinegar.
• BRAGG’S HEALTHY SALAD DRESSING:
2 garlic cloves (chopped) 1 tsp dried basil leaves,
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup water
1 Tbsp raw organic honey dash cumin powder
dash cayenne pepper
pinch of Himalayan salt
Mix all of the above ingredients in a jar, give it a good
shake, and keep handy in the fridge to serve on salads.
• BRAGG’S ARTHRITIS REMEDY:
Upon arising in the morning, make up a delicious apple
cider vinegar cocktail as follows: Stir, shake, or blend 6 oz.
distilled water with 1 to 2 tsp unpasteurized apple cider
vinegar, and 1 to 2 tsp honey. Follow this by eating an
organic apple. Use 1 tsp vinegar with your daily garden
salad, and remember: 1 to 2 apples a day keeps the doctor
away.
COLD PREVENTION MEDICINE – Peel a knuckle of
ginger root and put into pint jar. Add peeled cloves of one
head of garlic and two small chili peppers. Cover with cider
vinegar that’s been brought to a near boil. Cap tightly and
store in fridge. Grandmother’s suggested dosage: Take one
teaspoonful in half cup of water when you feel a cold coming
on. Keeps indefinitely in the fridge.
COLD AND ‘FLU TONIC – Mix 2 tsp cider vinegar into
1 cup of boiling water and sweeten with honey to taste.
When cool, sip slowly. Good for relieving cough and breaking
up phlegm. For congestion, serve this mixture hot and
inhale the steam.
HEARTBURN REMEDY – One teaspoonful of cider vinegar
mixed into a glass of water, taken with a spicy meal,
makes a reliable acid neutralizer – warding off heartburn.
NOSEBLEED REMEDY – Soak a sterile cloth in white
distilled vinegar diluted with equal parts water and apply to
stop bleeding. According to Grandma’s old notes, the acid
in the vinegar seals the broken vessel.
HEADACHE REMEDY – Bring a mixture of 1/2 cup apple
cider vinegar and 1 cup water to a boil. Add a generous handful
of fresh, or several spoonfuls of dried, mint leaves to the
pot, turn off heat, and steep until infused (half hour or so).
Cover head with a towel, hold over steaming liquid, and
inhale fumes. Good treatment for tension or sinus headache.
ITCHY SKIN RELIEF – Run a cool tub full of water and
add 2 cups of apple cider vinegar. Then get in and have a
soak. This is good for soothing heat rash, hives, mosquito
bites, and swimmers itch. Or if you’re in a hurry, just wet a
cloth in cold water, ring it out, then pour some apple cider
vinegar on the cloth. Squeeze it out again and use it to wipe
your face, arms, or any other body parts that are itchy and
irritated. The astringent action of the vinegar is soothing
and anti-inflammatory.
SUNBURN REMEDY – Pat affected skin with a mixture
of cider vinegar and cold water to cool and relieve pain.
This helps prevent blistering and peeling.
FOOT ODOUR REMEDY – Put about a pint of distilled
white or cider vinegar into a basin of warm water and soak
feet. This deodorizes and softens calluses at the same time.
Rinsing socks in this solution after washing acts like a
built-in odour eater.
ITCHY SCALP REMEDY – Add 2 tablespoons distilled
white, rice, or cider vinegar to a quart of warm water and
use as final hair rinse after shampooing. This mixture dissolves
soap residue that causes dry, flaking scalp.
Rosemary vinegar adds fragrance and shine to hair.
From the Editor...
A Note About Acidity
The human body’s ideal pH is slightly alkaline – 7.30 to
7.45. If the body becomes too acidic, symptoms can arise
such as gas, constipation, bloating, acne, heartburn, acid
reflux, indigestion, mild headaches, gastritis, infections,
candida, and frequent ‘flus. Advanced symptoms of overacidity
can include Crohn’s disease and even cancer.
If a person’s diet is largely composed of acid-forming
foods such as meat, shellfish, cheese, pastries, greasy takeout
meals, chocolate, coffee, wine, and beer (all acid-forming),
then their body is likely overly acidic.
The body needs an alkaline pH to maintain clean blood,
good enzyme reserves, and healthy immune function. The
general recommendation to maintain a healthy pH is: Eat
80% alkaline-forming foods and 20% acid-forming foods.
The terms ‘acid-forming’ and ‘alkaline-forming’ foods
refer to how much acid the
stomach has to produce in
order to digest the food. An
orange, even though it is
acidic outside the body, is
considered alkaline-forming
inside the body – when eaten,
the stomach has to produce
almost no acid. Apple cider
vinegar is clearly acidic when
sitting on your counter, but
inside the stomach it becomes
‘alkaline-forming’ because the
stomach has to produce
22 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017
almost no acid to digest it. Conversely, something like
bread requires a lot of acid to digest, so it is considered to
be ‘acid-forming’.
In regards to apple cider vinegar, it must be raw (unpasteurized)
in order to alkalinize the body and have a beneficial
effect. In fact, raw apple cider vinegar (ACV) is the
only vinegar that is alkaline-forming to the body. All other
vinegars (white, balsamic, red wine, etc.) are acid-forming,
although mirin and fermented balsamic are the least acidforming,
and white vinegar is the most acid-forming. For a
healthy, balanced pH, raw apple cider vinegar is one of the
best things to add to your diet.
Spring Cleaning With White Vinegar
by Linda Gabris
Distilled white vinegar is not fit for human consumption
because harsh chemicals and solvents are used during distillation
to make the vinegar clear. Sometimes called
“dead” vinegar due to intense heat involved in the distillation
process, the “life-giving” mother (present in raw vinegar)
is destroyed along with beneficial enzymes, minerals,
and other useful nutrients. However, distilled white vinegar
is environmentally friendly and easy on the budget, making
it an excellent alternative to chemical cleaning solutions
for ridding germs and unpleasant odours around the house.
When I was kid, inexpensive distilled white vinegar was
one of the handiest staples in my grandmother’s pantry. She
depended upon it for nursing boils, cold sores, skin rashes,
bug bites, nosebleed, and more, as well as for housecleaning.
Here’s how it is best used for spring cleaning:
Sparkling Glass – Add distilled white vinegar to water
when washing windows and glass decorations. Cuts grease
and grime and deters buildup. A quarter cup added to rinse
water leaves dishes squeaky clean.
Coffee Pots – Make a mixture of half distilled white
vinegar, half water. Run it through pot to remove lime and
calcium deposits. Use in tea kettle, too.
Drains – Empty 1/2 cup baking soda into drain. Add 1
cup of white distilled vinegar. Let the carbon dioxide fizzle
until it’s worn out. Rinse with boiling water. Gets rid of
greasy odour and buildup.
uses for cleaning and more, see extended version of
Magnesium deficiency is
found more often in children
with attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD)
than in healthy children. In
one study of ADHD children,
magnesium deficiency was
found in 95% of those examined.(1)
Does this warrant
magnesium supplementation
Magnesium can help kids
for such children? The answer
is yes.
sleep better at night,
Supplementation with relieve discomfort from
magnesium appears to be sore muscles and growing
very helpful for alleviating pains, relieve constipation,
hyperactivity in children.(2) In reduce anxiety, and
one group of children supplemented
with about 200 mg.
reduce headache days
per day of magnesium for six months, there was “an increase
in magnesium levels in hair and a significant decrease of
hyperactivity,” compared to children in the control group
who had not been treated with supplemental magnesium.(3)
A review that looked at studies done on magnesium for the
treatment of ADHD in children concluded that although
“studies supported that magnesium is effective for treating
ADHD ... until further strong evidences for its efficacy and
safety are provided, magnesium is not recommended for
treating ADHD.”(4) This is typical of modern “evidencebased”
medical literature. Some medical professionals will
ignore what is already known unless a sufficient number of
double-blind randomized studies have been performed.
Magnesium supplementation is safe and effective, and it is
critically important for children who are deficient.
There have been no deaths reported from magnesium
supplementation.(5) An overdose of magnesium may result
in loose stools. This is temporary, and will go away once
dosages are reduced or divided into smaller amounts given
throughout the day. Magnesium supplementation is worth
trying, especially when we consider the dangers of ADHD
drugs.
Other Benefits of Magnesium
In addition to its effectiveness for treating hyperactivity,
magnesium also benefits children in other profound ways: it
can help kids sleep better at night, relieve discomfort from
sore muscles and growing pains, relieve constipation, reduce
anxiety, and reduce headache days.(10)
“I have come to the conclusion that everyone could benefit
from extra magnesium supplementation.”
– Carolyn Dean, MD, ND
Magnesium and Other Nutrients for ADHD
ADHD is not caused by a drug deficiency. Instead of giving
drugs to our children, we should look to the benefits of providing
them with optimal nutrition. Children with ADHD
may benefit from optimal levels of several nutrients including
vitamin D,(11) iron,(12) niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), vitamin
C, and omega-3 fatty acids.(13) In addition to removing
refined sugar from the diet, avoiding artificial food dyes, and
providing healthy food, pediatrician Ralph Campbell, MD,
recommends a vitamin B-complex supplement be given with
breakfast, an additional 100 mg of B6 at another meal, and
200 mg. or more of magnesium per day for ADHD children.
(13) Other helpful tips include limiting screen time and
increasing exercise, especially in the outdoors.
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of magnesium
for children is as follows: ages one to three is 80 mg.
per day; ages four to five 130 mg. per day; by age nine, our
government recommends that kids get (at least) 240 mg. of
magnesium per day; at age 14 between 360 to 410 mg. per
day. Keep in mind, only about 30 to 40% of dietary magnesium
is absorbed by the body.(14) Remember, too much magnesium
in a less-absorbable form can cause loose stools. This
side effect can be prevented by reducing the amount of magnesium
given and providing it in a more absorbable form. If
larger total daily doses of magnesium are required, divide the
dose into smaller amounts and give it multiple times
throughout the day.
Oral magnesium citrate is inexpensive and fairly well
absorbed. Other useful, but more costly, oral forms of magnesium
include magnesium glycinate, magnesium gluconate,
magnesium taurate, magnesium malate, and magnesium
chloride. Avoid magnesium oxide (it absorbs very poorly)
and avoid both magnesium glutamate and magnesium aspartate.(10)
Magnesium sulfate is cheap and can be obtained
transdermally by soaking in regular Epsom salt baths.
How We Get Magnesium into Our Children
• Oral magnesium supplementation:
– We give our children a daily chewable magnesium tablet or
oral liquid magnesium
– We give our children a crushed portion of an adult magnesium
tablet given with something tasty like honey, applesauce,
or ice cream
– For better absorption, we divide the dose and give magnesium
between meals.
• Transdermal Magnesium:
– Our children take bi-weekly Epsom salt baths. We toss a
handful or two of Epsom salt in their bath and have them
soak for about 10 to 15 minutes. Our kids call it “water salt.”
• Dietary Magnesium:
– Our children eat a plant-based diet which provides magnesium
from many sources. We include organic vegetables
like carrots, baby spinach, and beet greens in our homemade,
fresh, raw veggie juice. They drink this 2 to 3 times per week.
We include wheat germ in bread, pizza dough, and smoothies.
Cashews are offered for snacks. We sprinkle sunflower
seeds on salads. We eat fish often, as well as bean and lentil
soups. They love guacamole, bananas, and berries. They like
peanut butter. They eat oatmeal, brown rice, and potatoes.
Our children do not suffer from ADHD. But we don’t like
to wait around for nutritional problems to show up. We see to
it that our kids get the nutrients their growing bodies need.
“Don’t take chances; take vitamins and minerals!” is our
motto. Always will be.
DECK GARDENING
How One Couple Downsized Their
Garden and Never Looked Back
BY NANCY LOUCKS-MCSLOY
Gardening has always been
important at our house. To
my husband, it is like a
therapy. Besides that, who
wouldn’t want fresh veggies
all summer, followed
by the fruits of one’s labour
stored in the freezer for the
winter.
Sadly, my husband has
not been well for the past
few years, so he started to It was wonderful to sit outside
at breakfast, lunch,
find that the big garden in
the back yard was getting
or dinnertime and have
to be a bit too much of a
homegrown tomatoes
bother. Yet he still wanted a
and other veggies at our
garden.
As for me, I love working
with my flowers but I from our deck garden
fingertips, harvested
grew up on a farm in which
we did a lot of market-gardening, so a huge vegetable garden
feels like work.
I pondered the problem in search of a solution. I like the
idea of “food not lawns,” but our front lawn is very tiny and
has a birch tree right in the middle. I continued to brainstorm
and thought about my friend who planted potatoes in
flower pots for her mom to have on the balcony of her
condo. I also thought about “Balconies Beautiful,” a community
project that I have been involved with for the past
few years (every year, the residents of local housing projects
are given flower pots, dirt, and bedding plants so that
they can have flowers on their balconies). Some of them
have gone one step further and asked for tomato plants
instead of flowers.
Aha, thought I, we have a huge deck. Why not make a
deck garden. My husband looked at me rather oddly when
I told him of my idea, but as he watched me getting things
together I think he felt that he better get involved.
I am all about re-using and recycling, so when I found
two 45 gallon drums on our property, I asked him to cut
them in half. That is where we would plant our tomatoes.
As well, I found a bunch of large flower pots that had been
given to us but were collecting dust in the shed. They would
be perfect for spinach, peppers, lettuce, radishes, and so on.
I also dug out a decorative tub that had been collecting dust
and chose to turn it into an herb garden, and introduced ele-
ments of a fairy garden as well.
Planting day was exciting! The pots and bins were set up
around the edge of the deck. We had lots of compost to mix
with the soil so we were ready to fill the containers and
start planting. The half-drums each held two tomato plants,
and we mixed in some onions with them. In the pots were
placed a variety of spinach seeds, lettuce, four types of peppers,
cucumbers, radishes, and chives.
The decorative container was filled with parsley,
cilantro, and sweet basil plants. On the middle of the patio
table sat a strawberry plant. I had a few pots left over so I
filled them up with perennials, just to have some flowers in
the mix. We were able to use cages for the tomatoes, and
once the cucumbers started growing we put cages there as
well so that the vines would grow up due to the smaller size
of the planting pots.
It was so nice to sit at the patio table in the morning and
look over the plants. There was a bit of weeding, but very
little. And watering was easy! Grab the watering can and
take a quick walk around the deck.
Finally, the day came when we could start eating our harvest
bounty. It was wonderful to sit outside at breakfast,
lunch, or dinnertime and have homegrown tomatoes and
other veggies at our finger tips. The summer was so hot that
I brought the salad spinner outside and prepared salad on
the patio table. I would take the vegetables that we wanted
to grill, such as peppers, onions, and tomatoes, prepare
them outside and throw them on the grill.
Granted, it isn’t the huge garden that we were used to, but
it was easy and sufficient. It also proved to me that – yes,
you can grow a garden in a small space. In fact, I still have
tomatoes and peppers in the freezer, and dried herbs in the
cupboard, from last year’s harvest.
Top Ten
Nutrition Myths
Truth and Lies About Calcium, Sugar,
Cholesterol, and Antioxidants for Cancer
BY DR. ZOLTAN P. RONA, MD, MSc
(Editor’s note: Last month we published
the first part of Dr. Rona’s list of
‘Top Ten Nutrition Myths’. This month
we bring you the second part.)
This list of nutrition myths
hasn’t changed much in
nearly 40 years. I hear about one
or more of them every day in my
private practice. The people making
these erroneous assertions
tend to be very dogmatic in their
views. The source of these misleading
facts is most often practising
medical doctors untrained
in nutritional medicine, or those
who are just plain out of date.
Here are the most widely known
fake news items in natural medicine
that die hard.
As excellent alternatives
to dairy, whole
food supplements
high in calcium and
magnesium are made
from wheat grass,
chlorella, spirulina,
barley green, blue
green algae, green
FALSE NEWS #3
kamut, and more
Only Dairy Products Can
Provide Adequate Calcium
It is true that cow’s milk has the highest calcium content,
but many studies demonstrate that its absorption is inferior
to that seen with calcium from plant sources. Dark green
leafy vegetables have relatively high calcium concentrations.
With the exception of spinach (due to the high oxalate
content), the calcium from greens is very well absorbed.
Kale and other members of the same food family such as
broccoli, turnip greens, Brussels sprouts, collard greens,
and mustard greens are excellent sources of both calcium
and magnesium – an important trace mineral that aids calcium
utilization which is found in only small amounts in
cow’s milk.
A large number of excellent whole food supplements
high in both calcium and magnesium are available in health
food stores. These include wheat grass, spirulina, chlorella,
barley green, green kamut, blue green algae, and several
others. They all make ideal supplements for children
because they are easy to mix with juices, are highly
bioavailable, easily absorbed, and have a very healthy balance
of dozens of trace minerals, antioxidants, vitamins,
amino acids, and essential fatty acids.
32 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017
Other natural sources of
calcium include cooked
beans and peas, seaweeds,
sprouts (e.g. alfalfa), seeds
and nuts like sesame, pumpkin,
and hazelnuts, as well as
whole grains (e.g. corn tortillas,
quinoa).
The big issue about getting
enough calcium has to do
with prevention of osteoporosis.
It’s not about how
much calcium you get in the
diet as it is about how much
of that calcium you keep in
your bones that’s important.
And that all depends on magnesium,
vitamin D, vitamin
K, strontium, and numerous
other factors like exercise
and drug intake. In one study
of Japanese women who consumed
no dairy products and
had low calcium intakes, it
was found that they had the
lowest incidence of osteoporosis
when compared to
their American counterparts.
North American women on a
dairy-rich diet who also supplement
with calcium actually
had a significantly higher
incidence of osteoporosis
than Japanese women consuming
their ancestral diet.
FALSE NEWS #4
Sugar, In Moderation,
Is Safe and Does Not
Cause Any Illnesses
About two decades ago, a
very well known Canadian
doctor lost her medical
license for appearing on TV
and stating that sugar was the
cause of dozens of different
diseases. Times have, fortunately,
changed and the only
people saying that sugar is
harmless are those involved
in, or somehow affiliated
with, the sugar industry. For
example, the makers of cola
drinks are still blaming the
obesity epidemic on lazy people who do not exercise.
Despite a great deal of evidence to the contrary, spokespersons
for soda pop companies say that sugar has nothing to
do with obesity. This is clearly false news.
Study after study demonstrates that sugar consumption is
directly or indirectly associated with poor health. Simple
sugars feed harmful intestinal yeasts, fungi, toxic organisms,
and all forms of cancer. The volume of supporting literature
for this is staggering. Here is a partial list of health
conditions associated with high sugar consumption:
– obesity – eating disorders
– cardiovascular disease
– atherosclerosis – high blood pressure
– increased platelet stickiness
– adult onset diabetes mellitus
– gastrointestinal disease
(diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, etc)
– gallstones – immune suppression
– dental caries – recurrent infections
– depression – reactive hypoglycemia
– candida syndrome – learning disabilities
– anxiety – chronic pain syndromes
– ADHD in children and adults
FALSE NEWS #5
Eating Foods High in Cholesterol
Is Bad for You
Over 85% of the cholesterol in our blood does not come
from the diet but from manufacture by the liver. If cholesterol
is so terrible, why is it found in every normal cell in
the body? Cholesterol is protective and part of all the
body’s cell membranes, bile acids, and steroid hormones.
Deficiency, or low cholesterol, has been associated with a
higher risk of cancer and immune disorders, including
AIDS, in numerous studies. We need cholesterol to make
all of our steroid hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone,
etc). The body also manufactures vitamin D under
our skin from cholesterol. So, if you suppress cholesterol
with statin drugs like Lipitor and Crestor, you also suppress
your vital steroid hormones and vitamin D.
The real role of cholesterol in the body is to serve as a
defence against free radicals. The more free radicals (peroxides,
petrochemicals, tobacco smoke chemicals, fungal
mycotoxins, etc) that are invading the body, the more the
liver will manufacture cholesterol to help neutralize the
toxins. It is these free radical toxins, not the cholesterol,
that produce the arterial damage resulting in hardening of
the arteries and heart disease. High blood cholesterol levels
should therefore be regarded as a red flag indicating the
presence of high levels of free radicals, oxidant damage,
and infestation of the body with fungi or other pathogenic
microorganisms (bacteria, parasites, etc). High blood levels
of cholesterol should, at most, be considered a risk factor
for heart disease and not the real cause.
Furthermore, high carbohydrate diets are more likely a
cause of elevated cholesterol than high fat intake. For more
correct information on cholesterol see my earlier articles
FALSE NEWS #6
Taking Antioxidant Vitamins and Minerals
Does Not Mix Well with Chemotherapy
or Radiation Treatments for Cancer
I find Toronto area cancer specialists (oncologists) to be a
rather dogmatic bunch, and that’s putting it kindly. In the
past two years, the advice they have been providing about
nutritional supplements is nothing short of scary. One of
my cancer patients told me that his oncologist would refuse
to treat him with chemotherapy if he took any antioxidants,
especially high dose vitamin C. Another provided a 6-page
hospital-endorsed instruction booklet censuring the use of
any vitamin, mineral, herbal, or antioxidant supplement for
any patient receiving chemotherapy. The rationale for this
advice was that antioxidants “protect cancer cells” and
cause their spread. A third oncologist stated that intravenous
vitamin C would offset the benefits of chemotherapy
or radiation therapy because the latter treatments are
oxidizing while the former are anti-oxidizing (this despite
numerous published articles proving that high dose intravenous
vitamin C kills cancer cells while leaving healthy
cells alone).
Oncologists are quick to support their arguments by
referring to a much criticized and poorly done study by the
American Cancer Society’s Dr. Gabriella D’Andrea (“Use
of Antioxidants During Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy
Should Be Avoided”; CA Cancer J Clin 2005; 55:319-321).
According to Ralph W. Moss’ books and recently published
journal articles, the numerous factual distortions and
unproven assertions made in the American Cancer
Society’s position on the use of antioxidants have been
exposed as nothing more than superstition. Without exception,
the negative statements about antioxidants are myths
based on faulty theoretical beliefs. In fact, recent scientific
evidence published in peer reviewed cancer journals concludes
that the opposite is true. Antioxidants not only
reduce the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy but
they also make these mutilating treatments work much better
in terms of enhanced patient survival.
One recent example of this is the landmark study in the
May 2007 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Cancer
Treatment Reviews, which concluded that there is no evidence
that antioxidant supplements (vitamins A, C, E, selenium,
zinc, coenzyme Q10, and others) interfere with the
therapeutic effects of chemotherapy agents. Rather, they
may actually help increase survival rates, tumour response,
and the patient’s ability to tolerate treatment. This study,
conducted by Dr. Keith Block, Dr. Robert Newman, and
their research group, evaluated 845 reports of clinical trials
from five scientific databases that examined the effects of
taking natural antioxidant supplements concurrent with
36 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

chemotherapy. According to
Dr. Keith I. Block, lead
author of the study and
Medical Director of the
Block Center for Integrative
Cancer Treatment:
“This review demonstrates
that there is no scientific
support for the blanket
objection to using antioxidants
during chemotherapy.
In addition, it also appears
that these supplements may
help mitigate the side effects
of chemotherapy. This is significant
because it increases
the likelihood that patients
will be able to complete their
treatment.”
And co-author Dr. Robert
Newman, Professor of
Cancer Medicine at M. D.
Anderson Cancer Center,
stated:
“This study, along with the
evolving understanding of
antioxidant-chemotherapy
interactions, suggests that
the previously held beliefs
about interference do not
pertain to clinical treatment.”
Antioxidants are substances
that are thought to
protect healthy cells from
being damaged by toxins.
While it is true that antioxidants
protect healthy cells
from being damaged by
drugs like those used in standard
chemotherapy, they
seem to attack or further
damage the DNA of cancer
cells. There is no evidence
whatsoever that they protect
cancer cells from being
killed off by radiation or
chemotherapy. The truth is
that antioxidants support the
cancer killing properties of
these mainstream treatments
while preserving the integrity
of healthy cells.
According to the
September 10, 2007 issue of
The New Scotsman, Dr. Chi
www.vitalitymagazine.com
VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 37

Dang, a professor of medicine and oncology at Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, antioxidants appear to
work in a way that undermines a tumour’s ability to grow
under certain conditions. The higher the dose of the antioxidant,
the less the tumour thrives. The specific mechanism
of how this works is debatable. Proponents of high dose
intravenous vitamin C therapy for cancer believe that the
mechanism operating here is vitamin C’s stimulation of the
production of hydrogen peroxide, a substance lethal to cancer
cells but harmless to normal healthy cells.
Antioxidants play a positive role in destroying diseased
cells such as the ones that occur in cancer. As is now very
obvious from peer reviewed scientific studies, antioxidants
are a must for any cancer patient, especially for those who
are being treated with either radiation or chemotherapy.
Eating Yeast is Bad for You
Although it is true that people truly allergic to yeast should
avoid it as much as possible, this is generally not true for
the vast majority of health conscious people. Carlton
Fredericks, Adelle Davis, and Paavo Airola, health gurus of
the 1960s and 70s, all advocated yeast supplements for
their rich content of B vitamins, chromium, selenium, other
trace minerals, amino acids, enzymes, essential fatty acids,
nucleic acids, and anti-stress polypeptides.
Brewer’s yeast and other yeast-derived products are
effective remedies for menopausal hot flashes, weakened
immunity, neurasthenia, anxiety, and diabetes. They also
help replace nutrients destroyed by prescription antibiotics
and other drugs.
Harmless yeasts, including candida albicans, are everywhere
in the body – the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract,
skin, and hair. This is a normal fact of life. They can be
found growing on practically all ripened fruits, vegetables,
breads, baked goods, seeds, nuts, herbs, and anywhere that
mould grows, including yeast-free bread. They cannot be
eliminated entirely and even those who take prescription
anti-fungals can never claim to completely eradicate all the
yeast ubiquitous in our environment as well as our bodies.
FALSE NEWS #8
Mercury in Dental Fillings and Vaccines Is Safe
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the famous actor and father of
an autistic child, Robert De Niro, recently made scientists
an offer they shouldn’t refuse. They offered $100,000 to
anyone who can offer proof of the safety of mercury in
vaccines.(3) Unfortunately, to date, the $100K challenge
offered by RFK Jr. and De Niro has brought no one forth
with evidence of vaccine safety. There is no stampede of
scientists bringing the proof needed to collect the
$100,000. Looks bad for the drug companies so far.
Maybe we have to wait a bit longer.
Of course, mercury is not the only toxin in vaccines. We
also have aluminum, formaldehyde, glyphosate (pesticide),
antibiotics, aborted fetal cells, and foreign genetic material
in many of our vaccines. The safety of mercury in the body
is controversial at best. The EPA and the WHO have indicated
different levels of mercury that can safely be ingested
or injected. What is certain is that mercury is both an
immunity suppressor and a neurotoxin. Many in the conventional
dental profession still use mercury, but the trend
amongst more enlightened dentists is a movement away
from using mercury dental amalgams.
CURBS SPRING
ALLERGY SYMPTOMS
New research shows that a
probiotic combination may
discrepancy. Not all dairy
foods should be lumped
and non-nutrient substances
that could influence
cancer etiology.
on 1,941 women with breast cancer and 1,237 women without.
After adjusting for confounding factors, they found that
high total dairy intake produced a 15% reduction in breast
cancer risk, but this was shown to be primarily attributable to
yogurt consumption. When women with the highest yogurt
intake were isolated, they were found to have a 39% lower
risk of developing breast cancer. Conversely, a high intake of
cheese, particularly cheddar cheese and cream cheeses, were
linked to a 53% increased risk of breast cancer.
EXERCISE TREATS CANCER FATIGUE
BETTER THAN DRUGS
New research shows that cancer patients can improve their
fatigue more effectively with exercise and psychotherapy
than with medications. (Cancer-related fatigue is common,
may be tied to the effects of either tumours or treatments,
and can last for years. It can be worsened by depression, anxiety,
sleep disturbance, and pain. Unlike other types of
exhaustion, just getting more sleep or giving aching muscles
a break from strenuous activities cannot address fatigue that
is associated with cancer.)
Scientists examined data from more than 11,500 cancer
patients with fatigue. Patients had been randomly assigned to
treat their exhaustion with exercise, psychotherapy, or both,
or stimulant drugs. Exercise and psychotherapy were associated
with a 26 to 30% reduction in fatigue during and after
cancer treatment, while drugs were related to only a 9%
reduction in fatigue.
The study author indicated that cancer patients should try
exercise or psychotherapy before they reach for a pharmaceutical.
Why exercise works is not clear, but it may be due
to its anti-inflammatory effects and improved physical function.
The psychological treatment that worked best was a
cognitive behavioural approach to change the way patients
thought about fatigue.
ANTIDEPRESSANT, ANTI-ANXIETY DRUGS
LINKED TO HIP FRACTURE RISK
New research shows that older individuals who use antidepressant
and anti-anxiety medications more frequently than
the general elderly population are more likely to fall and
break a hip. Study participants were comprised of older
hospital-admission patients who had suffered a fall and
who had then broken a hip. The analysis measured drug
levels in blood samples of the participants so that the investigators
could more precisely measure if the volunteers
took medications, what they were, and how much of the
medication was present, rather than simply asking the participant
or examining their medical records. (In fact, these
drugs were often found in the samples even though the participants
did not have them listed in their medical records.)
The scientists were quite surprised to find that so many
patients had so many antidepressant and benzodiazepene
drugs (i.e. diazepam) in their blood without their doctors
apparently being aware of this use. Several of the detected
drugs that fall into the antidepressant
or anti-anxiety class
were found in significantly
higher levels and with higher
frequency in these older persons
than in their peers who
did not suffer hip fracture.
BLUEBERRIES BOOST
BRAIN HEALTH IN SENIORS
Scientists have found that drinking concentrated blueberry
juice improves brain function in seniors. (Blueberries are
rich in flavonoids, which are both antioxidant and antiinflammatory.
Previous research showed that cognitive function
is better preserved in older adults with a diet rich in
plant-based foods.)
Compared to controls who drank a placebo beverage,
healthy volunteers aged 65 to 77 who drank 30 ml. of blueberry
concentrate daily for 12 weeks showed greater
improvements in cognitive function, blood flow to the brain,
and activation of the brain while undergoing cognitive testing
(as measured by scans). This amount of concentrated
blueberry juice is equivalent to one ounce of juice or about
eight ounces of fresh blueberries.
The new study from the University of Exeter isn’t the first
study to associate blueberries with better brain function in
older people. This finding adds to those of an earlier study,
conducted in 2016, that found consuming freeze-dried blueberry
powder, equivalent to one cup of fresh berries, for 16
weeks, boosted the memories of those who already had mild
cognitive impairment. This study was conducted at the
University of Exeter in the UK but has not yet been accepted
for publication in a medical journal.
LUNG CANCER RISK
REDUCED BY ANTIOXIDANTS
New evidence suggests that a diet high in antioxidants protects
both smokers and nonsmokers from lung cancer, and
that a diet high in carotenoids and vitamin C reduces the risk
of lung cancer in heavy smokers. Some antioxidants, including
beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, and
lycopene, were associated with a lower lung cancer risk in
female moderate smokers and nonsmokers. Evidence was
found that vitamin C protects against lung cancer in women,
something that was never before known. (Previously, adults
with higher blood levels of B6 were found to have an impressive
50% reduced risk of developing lung cancer than those
with low B6 levels. Another study found that smokers who
drank no green tea had a 13-fold higher risk of lung cancer
than their tea drinking counterparts.)
This was the first study to consider duration of smoking
and elapsed time since quitting, both key smoking-related
factors for lung cancer. Specifically, high intakes of betacarotene,
alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and
vitamin C were associated with a reduced risk of squamous
cell carcinoma; high intakes of beta-carotene and alphacarotene
lowered the risk of adenocarcinoma; and both
medium and high intakes of beta-cryptoxanthin and
lycopene reduced the risk of small cell carcinoma.
journal Frontiers in Oncology. The entire study can be read
HEART PATIENTS BENEFIT FROM FISH OIL
A new review has prompted the American Heart Association
to issue a new recommendation that doctors consider prescribing
fish oil capsules to heart attack survivors and
patients with chronic heart failure. The AHA suggested that
fish oil may extend the lives of these patients. The recommendations
are based on a review of 15 clinical trials; 13
were conducted after 2002, which was the last time the association
issued recommendations on fish oil. The AHA has
long recommended that people eat fatty fish at least twice a
week. Overall, patients on fish oil had an 8% lower risk of
being hospitalized or dying over four years. The study
stressed that its conclusions could not recommend fish oil for
preventing heart problems, because none of the clinical trials
assessed in this review tested the effects of fish oil in people
who are free of heart disease. (Fish oil is rich in omega-3
fatty acids, which are generally thought to be heart-healthy.
Oily fish, such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel are good
sources, but many people turn to supplements for a regular
daily supply. One previous study found that about 8% of U.S.
adults, 19 million people, had used fish oil in the last month.
Omega-3 is sometimes used to treat very high triglycerides.)
The evidence suggests that fish oil does not prevent arteryclogging
plaque but might help by curbing the risk of a lifethreatening,
heart-rhythm disturbance. The report was posted
March 13 at http://tinyurl.com/z72o9or and will eventually
appear in the journal Circulation.
EARLY-LIFE VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY
AFFECTS COGNITION
Researchers have found that low vitamin B12 levels in babies
are associated with a decrease in cognitive test scores at five
years of age. They have also found that small children with
low levels of vitamin B12 have more difficulties solving cognitive
tests, such as the ability to do puzzles, recognize letters,
interpret complex geometrical figures, and interpret the
feelings of other children. (In low-income countries, and in
particular South Asia, poor vitamin B12 status is widespread.
Previous findings indicate that vitamin B12 is important for
the developing brain.)
The researchers collected blood from infants in Nepal and
measured their B12 status. Approximately five years later,
they contacted these children and conducted various developmental
and cognitive tests with them. The study author
suggested that suboptimal vitamin B12 is a hidden deficiency
in the bodies of these children, making their cells work
rigorously to signal imminent danger.
of Clinical Nutrition on March 23, 2017. It will be published
SLEEP-INDUCING COMPOUND IN ASHWAGANDHA
IDENTIFIED, CONFIRMED
Researchers have found that an active component of the
leaves of the Indian herb Ashwagandha can significantly
induce sleep. (Ashwagandha, or Withania somnifera, is a
central herb in Ayurveda. Its Latin name, somnifera, means
sleep-inducing. Although studies show that Ashwagandha
powder promotes sleep, science has yet to determine what
active component of this herb causes this effect.
Sleeplessness and other sleep disorders such as restless leg
syndrome are common complaints among the middle-aged
population.)
The research group investigated the effect of various components
of Ashwagandha on sleep in mice by using electronic
recordings (electroencephalogram and electromyography).
The water extract of Ashwagandha leaf, which contains triethylene
glycol, or TEG, promoted non-rapid eye movement
(NREM) sleep significantly and changed rapid eye movement
(REM) sleep slightly, while the alcohol extract showed
no effect on sleep. The sleep induced by TEG was similar to
normal sleep. Commercially available TEG also increased
the amount of NREM sleep. This shows that TEG is the previously
unknown component that induces physiologically
sound sleep. This study could revolutionize the natural plantbased
therapies for insomnia and sleep related disorders.
Cerato: A Bach Flower Remedy
The Bach Flower Remedies are gentle liquid
helpers made from the life energy or essence
of wild flowers, shrubs, and trees. They balance
and harmonize the emotions and states
of mind for both humans and animals. The
individual remedy Cerato helps us trust our
own judgment without needing the input of
others. This is a great remedy for us indecisive
humans – many of us know what we want
to do, but don’t trust ourselves to do it without
confirmation or support from someone
else! Cerato will help you trust your intuition
– and believe those messages you receive
from your animal friends! Cerato also helps animals trust
themselves so they don’t have to look to their owners for
approval all the time before they move or play. It won’t interfere
with your “Down-Stay” or “Sit” commands!
To help with occasional decision-making, take two drops
on your tongue or in any beverage. For support on an ongoing
basis, take two drops four times a day or use this dilution
until you feel secure making your own decisions: put
two drops in a 1 oz. bottle (25 or 30 ml) of pure water – not
distilled or tap water – and take four drops, four times a day.
Use the dilution with animals, too – it can be put on food
or a treat, or used topically. The stock bottle lasts longer
when you use the dilution, and potency is not reduced.
Note: Bach Flower Remedies contain a small amount of
alcohol. Rescue Pet (Rescue Remedy for pets) is now available,
and is glycerine-based.
Help for a Stressed-Out Cat
At a recent pet show in Toronto, my booth was right next to
a Savannah breeder. Savannahs are hybrid cats from matings
between domestic cats and Servals. They are big kitties, and
Buddy, whose cage was closest to me, was 20 pounds of big
boy. He did extremely well in his cage – his exotic looks
attracted constant crowds daily and he was so patient with
multiple camera flashes in his face – but on day three he had
just about had enough and started to spray. He had sprayed
in the hotel room that morning and now at the show –
drenching another cat and two kittens in an adjoining cage!
So I told the owner about the homeopathic called Bach
Rescue Remedy, the #1 selling natural stress reliever in the
world. Rescue is always in my purse, so I pulled it out and
dribbled four drops on a tissue, which we tucked under one
corner of his cage. Within minutes, Buddy was lying down,
and relaxed. And he didn’t spray again the entire day!
Bisphenol A and Feline Hyperthyroidism
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a hormone-disrupting chemical that
has caused serious health problems over the past few years
due to its use in plastic food and beverage containers, plastic
wraps, and canned food linings. It seems to be everywhere.
In humans it can cause “increased
risk for cardiovascular disorders, diabetes,
and liver abnormalities” as well as potential
genetic impacts. “Many laboratory animal
studies suggest that bisphenol A exposure at
low doses is linked to a staggering number of
health problems, including prostate and
breast cancer, obesity, hyperactivity, diabetes,
altered immune system, lowered
sperm count and sperm defects, increase in
aggression, elimination of sex differences in
behaviour, impaired learning and memory,
and early puberty.” And this is in humans!
(Quotes from www.petfoodpitfalls/blogspot.ca)
There is danger for pets, too. According to
the Journal of the American Veterinary
Medical Association (March 2004): “There is a strong correlation
between eating canned food and developing hyperthyroidism
later in life; in fact, cats that eat only canned
foods from “pop-top” type cans have five times the risk of
developing hyperthyroidism relative to cats who eat only
dry food. Cats whose diet is 50% canned food have 3.5
times the risk of developing hyperthyroidism relative to cats
that eat only dry food. It has been speculated that pop-top
type aluminum cans are lined with a substance called
Bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ether, which is transferred into food
containing oils or fats. In areas of the world where this type
of can is not used for cat food, hyperthyroidism is not a
common disease.” Feline hyperthyroidism is a leading serious
problem today for cats. (Even more reason to homecook
for your animals or raw-feed!)
Based in Stratford, Ontario, author Janet Hill is also the
book illustrator, and is known for her elegant and whimsical
artwork which has been featured in various magazines as
well as both private and corporate collections.
The story begins on an island off the coast of France,
where Miss Moon began her career minding 67 dogs.
Instead of running for the hills, she realized her lifelong
calling was to become a dog governess. Refined dog owners
everywhere will certainly agree that there is a terrible
shortage as it is extremely difficult to find anyone who specializes
in imparting good manners to pampered pooches –
let alone someone as experienced and dedicated as Miss
Moon. Now before you go barking up the wrong tree, a
simple visit to your neighbourhood park will prove how
sorely these services are needed. Be sure to watch where
you step, and don’t be surprised to find yourself overrun
with common dog walkers and their motley crew of wild,
canine charges.
Easy to read and divided into 20 life lessons, Miss Moon’s
terrific tips and gorgeous artwork will have you grinning
like a Cheshire cat. Lesson Eighteen, for example, will
appeal to eco-warriors and homesteaders alike – “Nurture
Top Ten Nutrition
Myths (Part 1)
Truth and Lies About Vitamin C, Kava Kava,
St. John’s Wort, Beta Carotene, and more...
his list of nutritional medi-
myths hasn’t changed Tcine
much in nearly 40 years. I hear
about one or more of them every
day in my private practice. The
people making the erroneous
assertions tend to be very dogmatic
in their views. The source
of these misleading facts is most
often practising medical doctors
untrained in nutritional medicine,
or those who are just plain
out of date. These are the most
widely known fake news items
in natural medicine that die hard.
Although there are others not
listed here, what follows is my
current top ten.
This is a classic because, if you ask anyone out there, they
have definitely heard about it. The truth is that vitamin C
is generally well tolerated by most healthy individuals.
There is, however, a wide range of tolerance when megadoses
are supplemented. Large doses (500 mg or more) can
cause diarrhea but this appears
to be the only significant side
effect and only occurs if taken
orally (as opposed to intravenously).
Interestingly
enough, the sicker a person is
(i.e. respiratory tract infections,
the ‘flu, etc.), the more
vitamin C they can tolerate
without getting loose stools.
Alternative health care practitioners
often recommend taking
high doses of vitamin C
(to bowel tolerance level)
Dr. Rona Q&A: On CT
Scans, Colonoscopies,
and Chelation Therapy
Dear Dr. Rona:
I recently underwent a very
painful colonoscopy due to
diverticulitis. I was then sent
for a CT scan to complete
the examination because
only 90% of the exam was
done. After learning that a
CT scan emits 50 to 100
times the radiation of a regular
X-ray, I decided to opt
out. My question to you is:
Did I make the right decision,
and what other scans
could be done to complete
the examination of my
colon? I have blood in my
appalled to learn about the
actively suppress the
in this province. Ontario is
falling behind other jurisdictions.
For example, Quebec’s
agriculture is 3.5% organic
and increasing, U.S. agriculture
is 4% organic, yet
Ontario’s agriculture is even
falling behind its own market
demand at only 2%
organic. Areas of Ontario
government suppression of
organic growth include:
• Marketing boards controlled
by chemical agriculture
are strongly supported
by the government, and
organic growers who are
mostly small farmers are
forced to make financial
contributions to support
chemicalized farms;
• A few years ago,
Kemptville and Alfred
Agricultural colleges were
vibrant centres moving
towards sustainable and
organic agriculture practices.
But this cannot be tolerated
by the chemically
controlled University of
Guelph so these campuses
are being closed.
• Instead of supporting the
stabilization of manures and
organic matter by means of
simple composting, the
Ontario government financially
supports the stupid
practice of raw manure storage
and land application. Of
course, the organic matter
including phosphorous is
www.vitalitymagazine.com
not stable and leaches easily
into our water, causing
algae and other water problems.
Around the world,
about 70% of water contamination
is caused by poor
agricultural practices – this
could even be higher in
Ontario because our agriculture
is so heavily chemicalized,
especially with
glyphosate;
• The Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs (OMAFRA) is still
studying fundamental agriculture
issues such as an
Agricultural Soil Health and
Conservation Strategy. Even
after OMAFRA completed a
study, “Sustaining Ontario’s
Agricultural Soils: Our Soil
at Risk,” no action is being
taken.
• Further, our government
is promoting many disjointed
and contradicting programs
such as:
Carbon cap and trade –
our chemicalized agriculture
burns carbon and
exhausts C02 to the atmosphere,
whereas soils with
increased organic matter
resulting from organic and
sustainable practices act as a
carbon sink absorbing huge
amounts of carbon into the
fields and nourishing crops.
Our medical system can
not keep up with the poor
How Acupuncture and Cupping
Help to Ease Emotional Pain
BY LANA MARCONI, R.Ac
In order to talk about any topic
in Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM), it’s imperative
to first acknowledge the core of
TCM, which is Qi or energy.
TCM is the study of Qi and its
functions and mechanisms.
In regards to stress, it can be
physical and emotional/mental.
For the purpose of this article,
let’s talk about emotional and
mental stress and we will start While it’s important not
with the pain of anger. Most to deny your feelings, it
people have encountered an is beneficial to release
angry person at some point in negative emotional
their lives (including themselves).
and cells. Acupuncture
energy from tissues
According to TCM theory, helps to move stagnant
spring is dedicated to the liver energy, as does
meridian/organ and anger is its cupping, another
negative expression which TCM therapy
makes Qi rise in the body. Sides
of the tongue (where the distribution
of liver energy is located) can appear to be redder
than normal and when the pulse is taken it will generally
feel wiry, like a guitar string, in the liver pulse position. The
normal Qi mechanism of the liver is to smoothly flow energy
in all directions. When a person is angry, the healthy flow
of Qi is impaired. So the smooth even flow of Qi moving
throughout the body delivering nutrients is hindered and
that can lead to headaches, insomnia, vision problems, muscle
tension, even heart disease. Even Western medicine has
acknowledged the link between anger and heart disease.
While it’s important to not deny your feelings, it is beneficial
to release that negative energy from tissues and cells.
Acupuncture helps to move stagnant energy, as does cupping,
another TCM therapy. A TCM diagnosis pattern for an
angry person can be “Liver Yang Rising”. In this case, the
treatment principle is to subdue Liver Yang and Tonify Yin.
The acupuncture point prescription could include: Liver-3,
San Jiao-5, Gall Bladder-38, Tai Yang (extra point), and
Spleen-6 among other specific points.
Wood Element: In TCM there are five elements. The
spring season is associated with the liver and Wood element.
Foods that help strengthen the function of the liver are
greens such as: spinach, kale, parsley, lima beans, avocado,
asparagus, artichoke, lime, green tea, and so forth. Green is
the colour of the wood element, and the liver belongs to the
Wood element, according to TCM theory. To connect with
your liver, you can close your eyes, take a few breaths, and
visualize green light nurturing your liver.
Fire Element: Next is the Fire element, which is dominant
in the summertime. Can you feel the hot sun warming
you? The meridian associated with the fire element and
summer is the heart.
The stressful emotion in this category that creates havoc
in the body is overstimulation. The tip of tongue where the
heart energy is located may be redder than normal, there
may also be a yellow coating, and the pulse rapid and even
overflowing in the heart pulse position. This extreme pattern
of mental restlessness is called “Heart Fire Blazing” and the
treatment principle is to Quell Heart Fire and Calm Shen
(mind). Acupuncture points can include: Heart-9, Heart-8,
Ren-15, as well as Du-24 among others. TCM is about balance,
meaning yin and yang must be harmonized for optimal
health. Acupuncture helps to balance yin and yang energies,
restoring harmony.
Since the colour associated with the summer is red, foods
that are beneficial to the fire element and the
heart meridian include tomatoes, watermelon,
beets, strawberries, cherries, and other cooling
yin foods. To connect with your heart, you
can close your eyes, take a few deep breaths,
and visualize red light nurturing your heart.
Earth Element: Continuing with the five
elements in TCM to understand the relationship
between stressful emotions and the
meridians/organs, the next element is Earth.
The organ or meridian associated with it is the spleen. The
associated time of year is ‘Indian summer’ (late summer,
early fall). The stressful emotion here is worry, overthinking,
obsessiveness.
The main area of the tongue revealing the distribution of
the spleen energy is in the center. When a person worries a
lot or is overthinking, that part of the tongue can appear
pale. Keep in mind that a normal looking tongue body is
pink or pale red with a thin coating and slightly moist. With
excessive stress, the pulse may be felt as empty which is a
faint type of pulse indicating a deficiency of Qi and blood,
hence the pattern here includes “Spleen Qi Deficiency.”
According to TCM theory, the impact of excessive worrying
knots up the Qi energy. Acupuncture helps to undo the Qi
knots so that Qi can flow more freely. Since the colour asso-
that are beneficial include garbanzo beans,
pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, oranges, papaya,
pineapple, and squash. To connect with your
spleen, you can close your eyes, take a few
deep breaths, and visualize yellow light
energizing your spleen.
Metal Element: Moving along to the next
element, it’s called Metal and the meridian/organ
includes the lungs. Fall is the time
of year associated with the Metal element and the lungs. The
emotion in this category that puts stress on the body is sadness
and grief which dissolves Qi. A person feeling sad can
have a tongue that is slightly red on the sides in the chest
areas (of the tongue) while the pulse would be tight (like a
rope) in the lung position. The TCM pattern would be called
“Lung Qi Stagnation” and the treatment principle would be
to Smooth Lung Qi using specific acupuncture points such
as: Lung-7, Stomach-40, Ren-15, Pericardium-6.
Acupuncture helps to regulate the flow of Qi.
Foods that help nurture the lungs are white in colour as
that’s the colour of the Metal element. These include onion,
garlic, mushrooms, rice, soy, banana, pear, and almonds. To
connect with your lungs, you can close your eyes, take a few
deep breaths, and visualize white light nurturing your lungs.
Water Element: The fifth element is Water and its corresponding
meridian/organ includes the kidneys. Winter is the
season associated with the kidneys and the Water element.
The emotion in this category that puts stress on the body is
fear, which makes Qi descend. A TCM pattern accompanying
fear is “Kidney Yin Deficiency,” and the tongue would
have a normal colour, without coating though, and the pulse
could be felt as empty. Acupuncture helps to nourish Kidney
Yin using specific points such as Kidney-3 and Kidney-6.
Foods that benefit the kidneys and support the Water element
include fish, black beans, seaweeds, and walnuts. To
connect with your kidneys, you can close your eyes, take a
few deep breaths, and visualize dark-blue light energizing
your kidneys.
Generally speaking, this is how the Five Elements System
works when it comes to emotional pain/stress.
Start Your Day With Breakfast to
Fuel Your Power and Energy
by Stephan Wilmes
“Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a
prince, and dinner like a pauper.”
(Adelle Davis, 1904 – 1974)
This time-honoured wisdom
shows that breakfast has long
been regarded as the most
important meal of the day. The
body needs the vital boost that
breakfast provides to jumpstart
after many hours of rest.
Studies have indicated that
people who eat breakfast regularly
perform better physically
and mentally than people who
skip it. One long-term study
demonstrated that children’s
breakfast habits impact their
health into adulthood.
According to these studies,
people who enjoy a good
breakfast suffer less from
metabolic syndrome (a condition which
increases the risk of cardiac infarction,
strokes, and high blood pressure).
So what is a good and healthy breakfast?
“Many families consume only empty calories
in the morning – white flour products,
too much salt, and massive amounts of
sugar provide our bodies with anything but
strength,” says German biochemist Dr.h.c.
P. Jentschura. After a long night’s sleep, the
body’s energy and nutrient stores are empty
and must be refilled; otherwise, a person’s
concentration and performance levels
decline quickly.
This is particularly true with
children – their rapid growth
and exuberant activity levels
require a breakfast packed
with energy and nutrients. If
children, athletes, and hardworking
people miss out on
this or eat an unhealthy breakfast,
the consequences become
apparent much faster than
with sedentary adults or office
workers – they more easily
become fidgety, lose concentration,
fatigue earlier, and
generally tend to be more
prone to getting sick.
What kind of breakfast?
A perfect start to the day is a
breakfast rich in vitamins,
minerals, nutrients, trace elements, and
fibre. With this in mind, Dr. Jentschura
developed MorgenStund’, a specially formulated,
energy-packed, lactose- and
gluten-free porridge. Featuring organic millet,
buckwheat, fruits, oil seeds, and amaranth,
MorgenStund’ porridge not only
helps boost morning metabolism, it also
enhances performance and
endurance, and supports a
strong immune system. This
power breakfast will energize
you for hours, and it can satiate
your cravings since it is
loaded with real nutrients.
Since mornings are a busy
time, MorgenStund’ is
designed to be ready to eat in
5 minutes – just mix with hot
water, add whatever toppings
you like, and enjoy!
62 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017
Remember to hydrate!
It is also important to replenish fluids in the morning.
Whether you enjoy water, tea, or vegetable juices, a regular
and sufficient fluid intake ensures that your blood volume
does not diminish, and your gray matter, muscles and
organs are fed a consistent flow of oxygen-rich nutrients.
Recipe
MorgenStund’ with Banana, Raspberries, Cinnamon
(Makes one serving.)
3 Tbsp MorgenStund’ (about 35 g)
3/4 cup (180 ml) hot water
1/2 banana
2 Tbsp raspberries, fresh or frozen
4 to 6 dried dates or figs
1 tsp crushed linseed or coconut flakes
1 shot of cream, rice milk, almond milk or similar beverage
Prepare MorgenStund’ according to the package directions.
While it cools, cut the banana, dates or figs into small
pieces and add to the porridge. Add linseed, coconut flakes
or raspberries, cream or milk, and refine with cinnamon.
Since the beginning of the
20th century, cancer rates
have increased exponentially
– now affecting almost
50% of the American population.
Conventional treatment
continues to rely on
chemotherapy, surgery, and
radiation to attack cancer
cells. Yet research has
repeatedly shown that 95%
of cancer cases are directly
linked to diet and lifestyle.
The Metabolic Approach
to Cancer offers an innovative,
metabolic-focused
nutrition protocol that
claims to actually work.
Naturopathic integrative
oncologist and cancer survivor
Dr. Nasha Winters,
and nutrition therapist Jess
Higgins Kelley, have identified
the 10 key elements of a
person’s “terrain” (think of it
as a topographical map of
our body) that are crucial to
preventing and managing
cancer. Each of the terrain’s
10 elements – including epigenetics,
the microbiome,
the immune system, toxin
exposures, and blood sugar
This book offers an innovative,
metabolic-based nutrition protocol
balance – is illuminated as it
relates to the cancer process,
then given a researched and
tested, non-toxic and metabolic,
focused nutrition prescription.
The metabolic theory of
cancer – that cancer is
fueled by high carbohydrate
diets, not “bad” genetics –
was introduced by Nobel
Prize-laureate and scientist
Otto Warburg in 1931. It has
been largely disregarded by
conventional oncology ever
since. But this theory is
resurging as a result of
research showing incredible
clinical outcomes when cancer
cells are deprived of
their primary fuel source
(glucose). The ketogenic
diet – which relies on the
body’s production of
ketones as fuel – is the centrepiece
of The Metabolic
Approach to Cancer.
Further, Winters and Kelley
explain how to harness the
anticancer potential of phytonutrients
abundant in lowglycemic
plant and animal
foods to address the 10 hallmarks
of cancer – an
approach that Western medicine
does with drug-based
therapies.
Acupuncture, hypnosis, massage,
and herbs are explored here
Their optimized, genetically-tuned,
diet shuns
grains, legumes, sugar,
genetically modified foods,
pesticides, and synthetic
ingredients while emphasizing
whole, wild, local,
organic, fermented, heirloom,
and low-glycemic
foods and herbs. Other components
of their approach
include harm-reductive
herbal therapies like mistletoe
(considered the original
immunotherapy and common
in European cancer
care centres), and cannabinoids
(which shrink tumours
and increase quality of life,
yet are illegal in more than
half of the United States).
Through addressing the 10
root causes of cancer and
approaching the disease
from a nutrition-focused
standpoint, the authors
believe that we can slow
cancer’s endemic spread and
live optimized lives.
PR ESS RELEASE
OVERCOMING ACUTE AND
CHRONIC PAIN
Marc S. Micozzi, MD, PhD,
and Sebhia Marie Dibra
Healing Arts Press; 2017
This book puts the spotlight
on drug-free holistic treatments
for pain, based on
emotional type. For alleviation
of pain, modern medicine
provides few options
beyond narcotics, steroids,
and surgery. For those seeking
drug-free and surgeryfree
alternatives or complements
to conventional pain
management, the choices
are overwhelming.
In this guide to safe and
effective natural therapies
for acute and chronic pain,
authors Micozzi and Dibra
explain how your emotional
boundary style – how you
react to emotional, social,
environmental, and physical
stresses – affects which
complementary treatments
will work best for you.
Providing an easy questionnaire
to determine your
emotional type and an interactive
self-assessment for
finding the right pain treatment
for your condition,
they explore the effectiveness
of treatments for each
emotional type and for
many common pain disorders,
including arthritis,
back pain, fibromyalgia,
IBS, ulcer, migraine
headaches, carpal tunnel,
anxiety, PTSD, and more.
They review the scientific
evidence in support of each
therapy, suggesting only
well-established, safe, and
clinically proven alternative
treatments, such as
acupuncture, biofeedback,
hypnosis, massage, chiropractic,
yoga, herbs, and
essential oils.
VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 65

About a year and a half
ago, my five-year-old
son became ill with a common
virus. He was running a
fever, but I chose not to treat
it with medication because
my training as a Holistic
Health Practitioner had
made me aware that fever is
a sign of the body’s natural
defenses working to overcome
the virus by increasing
body temperature.
So I gave him some homeopathic
remedies (Boiron’s
Coryzalia for Kids and
Ferrum Phosphoricum 30 C),
and put him to bed with
warm socks on and a humidifier
going in his room. He
fell sound asleep.
While he slept, I sat in the
dark on my son’s bed, holding
his feet from on top of
the blankets. Sitting there
peacefully, I called in the
healing energy of Archangel
Raphael (a very strong Angel
guide for me as a healer), and
something wonderful happened
within seconds. My
hands started to tingle with a
sensation that felt like they
were waking up from being
asleep. I looked down at my
hands in the dark and could
see a beautiful emerald green
glow coming from them. In
that instance, I knew that a
healing energy was coming
The Healing Power of Reiki
Energy Medicine for Body, Mind, Spirit
BY LAURIE FEKECS, HHP, EAV TECHNICIAN, ECM PRACTITIONER, NNCP,
REIKI MASTER, CERTIFIED ARCHANGEL LIFE COACH
Reiki is a simple, natural,
safe method of spiritual
healing and self-improvement
that everyone can
use. It has been effective
in helping virtually every
known illness and always
creates a beneficial effect.
through. Then I was guided
to close my eyes and send
this healing energy into my
son’s auric body as he slept.
Amazingly, his fever
broke that night. He woke up
in the middle of the night
feeling stuffy but so much
better.
Later that night, I left his
room thinking, “Wow. I’ve
never wanted to learn Reiki
before, but now I’m feeling
this intense pull to do it. I
can’t believe this. I never
thought I’d become a Reiki
Practitioner.” My intuition
and gut told me – I had to do
this. I had to pursue it.
Within days I had signed
up with a beautiful and powerful
Reiki Master in private
lessons. And my life
changed once again.
REIKI (pronounced Ray-
Kee, a Japanese healing
technique), is the transmission
of Divine Life Force
Energy through a Reiki
Practitioner to another person
or living thing. The word
Reiki means: REI (universal)
KI (vital life force energy). It
produces an environment in
the body of wellbeing and
health. It is a very effective
treatment for stress reduction
and relaxation that also
promotes healing – body,
mind, and soul.
Reiki energy treatments
are purported to have numer-
ous beneficial effects:
– Healing of the physical
body on all levels;
– Strengthening immunity
by creating an environment
in the body that can more
easily fight viruses and bacteria;
– Balancing energy in
organs and tissues, alleviating
symptoms of discomfort
or pain;
– Shifting emotional states
(excellent for anxiety relief
and depression);
– Relieving pain;
– Inducing relaxation;
– Helping to heal scar tissue;
.... and much more.
Reiki is administered by
the “laying on of hands,” or a
hands-off method can be
used if preferred. Reiki is
based on the idea that an
unseen ‘life force energy’
flows through us – based on
the basic laws of physics that
tell us everything is energy.
If a person’s ‘life force energy’
is low, then they are more
likely to get sick or feel
stress, and if it is high they
are more healthy and emotionally
stable. I like to call
Reiki “smart energy”
because no matter where the
practitioner’s hands are laid
on the body, the energy that
flows through will naturally
go to where it’s most needed.
66 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

Reiki energy is all encompassing – it works on a physical,
emotional, and spiritual level. A treatment tends to make both
practitioner and client feel like a glowing radiance is flowing
around and through them. It’s peaceful and soothing.
Reiki is a simple, natural, safe method of spiritual healing
and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been
effective in helping virtually every known illness and always
creates a beneficial effect. Reiki does not conflict with any
other health care modality or practice. It will not interfere
with any conventional medical treatment, and in fact it has
been shown to actually enhance medical outcomes. It is a
gentle energy and cannot do any harm.
In my practice I’ve seen the most amazing healing transformations
occur as a result of this modality of energy work.
I cannot be more thankful for the healing power of Reiki and
I’m absolutely in love with it. Try it! You will love it!
The energy healing practice of Reiki
(originating in Japan in the 1920s and
most often translated as ‘universal
life-force energy’), received some noteworthy support when
renowned cardiovascular surgeon, and one of America’s
most popular television talk show hosts, Dr. Mehmet Oz,
commented that it was a “favourite treatment that could
change the future of medicine forever.”
For those intrigued by this endorsement and wanting to
learn more about the healing system known as Reiki, either
to help themselves, or to become a professional practitioner,
Reiki Master Penelope Quest’s The Reiki Manual would
make an excellent addition to their library.
Quest has been a Reiki Master and teacher since 1994,
and was involved in the writing of a set of National
Occupational Standards for Reiki in Britain. Upon completion,
she decided to support that work with a comprehensive
book on the subject; the result – The Reiki Manual: A
Training Guide for Reiki Students, Practitioners, and
Masters. It is detailed and thorough with a vast array of
information included. The prose is simple, easy to read and
follow, but without talking down to the reader. For those
new to Reiki, The Reiki Manual provides a summary of the
history, origins, theory and practice of Reiki, along with line
drawings and instructions on the hand positions for basic
Reiki treatments.
If you are thinking of becoming a practitioner, Quest’s
work imparts an abundance of information on best practice
standards such as: legal and ethical requirements of running
a practice, how to set up that business safely and professionally,
tips on communicating with clients, and how to go
about enhancing your professional development.
You won’t want to skip the 40-odd pages of appendices
either. They cover a wide range of useful and interesting
topics such as: the many different styles of Reiki, the science
of energy, Reiki Level 2 symbols, answers to revision
questions supplied at the end of each chapter, and practical
sample forms like treatment journals and record sheets.
It has been a number of years since I had a Reiki treatment
– a truly wonderful experience. Reading The Reiki
Manual gave me some new insight into what transpired during
that treatment – the preparation and physical work
involved, the training required, and a deeper understanding
of the art and science behind the Reiki ideals of letting go
of anger and worry, counting your many blessings, working
honestly and being kind to every living creature. The book
is a must have for any Reiki enthusiast.
MAY
SUN SIGN PREDICTIONS
★★★ By Julie Simmons ★★★
TAURUS: April 20 - May 20
What wakes you in the night between May 1st
and 3rd is important in the process of securing
your life. It makes sense to your awake self after
the 16th, but before you get there you are due for two more
revelations: One on the 10th suggesting there are ways of
doing things you hadn’t thought about, and another on the
11th reminding you to be realistic regarding who you can,
can’t, and should trust. Be present for others from the 9th –
12th. Showing up matters. Call on the hidden powers that
guide you, even if you don’t know what they are from May
17th – 20th. Blessings are everywhere. Renewal is in the air
between the 26th – 31st. A lot of the things you were wishing
for at the beginning of May show up by the end. Careful
not to give undo attention to small minds or judgmental people
on the 25th. It’s only undermining.
GEMINI: May 21 - June 20
You may be full of beans, confidence, drive and
lots of good ideas, which is fantastic. It’s also
important to remember that the one true truth is
that everything passes – astrology calls it transits. So we
seize the day; we make the most of what we have. And we
try not to over-identify with what we have grasped. Ideas
are plentiful and their time comes after May 3rd. Reality is
just that – real. Pay attention from the 8th – 12th. On one
hand this might slow you down a bit, but if you can keep
your head and not buy into the delusion du jour you come
out in a really great direction. Everything is possible from
the 18th – 25th, but not just yet. A moment of stillness
amidst the excitement is worth the investment. From the
26th onward you’re on a roll. A good one.
CANCER: June 21 - July 20
It’s time to act on your genuine impulse, which
you might recognize by its generally inclusive
and productive quality. Don’t hold back. A worthy
challenger steps up on May 9th with helpful intentions.
If you feel the love and you’re inspired by it say ‘Yes’. A bit
of doubt on the 11th cannot bring down the structure you
are trying to build. The theme of accepting help from a
powerful partner is strong 17th – 24th. It’s important to figure
out if this person is actually strong enough to deliver. If
not, move on and find stronger allies. You will, though
there could be a difficult moment on the 25th. Trust your
inner helpers, which may amount to your own hunches and
instincts. Acting out of conditioning will only set you back.
70 VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

LEO: July 22 - Aug. 22
Exciting possibilities are sprouting around you,
possibly like flowers in spring; vibrant, hopeful
and liberating. Seize the moments between May
2nd and 19th. Along the way you may encounter a
whirlpool of undermining doubt or a challenge to your
authority. Dare to do the thing you believe in – be it art,
business, or something I can’t imagine. You can’t get it all
done in three weeks but there is something to be said for
momentum. A seeming glitch in the gears on May 25th is
just the sound of something starting. Maybe adjustment is
required. From the 28th, if you work hard and stay open to
possibilities you will undoubtedly find yourself with something
to show for your enthusiasm, inspiration and effort.
VIRGO: Aug. 23 - Sept. 21
You’ve known it all along (well, for the last
three weeks), and now the time has come to act
on your intuition. From May 3rd – 10th it’s time
to be brave and true. It will set you free. And once freed,
like a princess from the ogre’s castle you will know what to
do, where to go, and who to consult. Undermining relationships
seem to rain on your parade on the 11th but you
are not in danger if you keep your eye on the thing you
want. Not just your eye but your mind and thoughts as well.
Sharing your good fortune with someone you trust and love
from the 16th – 20th will expand your potential for success
as well as just general happiness. Don’t be fooled on the
25th when a manipulator tries to mess up your game. Keep
alert and focused, and your chances are good for ending the
month on a powerful and positive note of manifestation.
LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 22
Relating can be exhausting but don’t give up,
not now. There is much to be gained in creating
the relationship you always wanted, versus the
one you always just fell into. This is very clear from May
2nd – 20th. Stand firm in what feels true between the 8th –
13th. It is true for you, and you are 50% of the relationship.
Standing firm does not equate with being rigid. From the
20th – 26th is a time-out for reflection. All untimely undertakings
could be beset with competitive reactions from others
as well as thunderous rumblings from below, but not
much lightning, so no need to scramble. Just take your time
and wait. From May 27th – 31st, the possibilities of vigorous
cooperation toward achieving significant goals is
strong. You were made to win even while you encourage
those around you to win with you.
SCORPIO: Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
What’s it to you if the world descends into chaos
as long as you can keep doing a good job, unimpeded?
Which is exactly what you can figure on
happening starting on May 3rd and going full steam until
the 11th when you may get sidetracked by love or children.
VITALITY MAGAZINE – MAY 2017 71

No problem. Just pick yourself up on the 12th and continue
on the path of doing what needs to get done: Good job!
If you’re tired out by the 20th, find someone you trust and
take a few days off together. You won’t be much good until
the 26th when things begin to perk up. This time the theme
seems to be good work as well as ambitious effort: Time to
involve those who should participate and eliminate the
dead weight. If you’re on a roll it can be hard to remember
to be kind. Remember anyway.
SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20
Truth hurts when you’ve been doing everything
to avoid it. Glad that’s over for you. Now it’s
time to get going! Your creative impulses, which
involve romance, art, kids, and entrepreneurial ventures are
ready to rock – starting now. Out of the gate you might
meet an old fear on May 3rd but you are totally stronger
than that. Focus on reality, as in money and work, on the
9th. Be open to something you never considered from the
10th – 14th, especially if it makes sense upon reflection. It
might not at first. The roll you’re on is great because it is
grounded. Rest up from the 20th – 26th. From there you
engage some interesting people. The challenges will only
make you stronger.
CAPRICORN : Dec. 21 - Jan. 19
Sometimes you don’t know what’s cooking but
you can sure smell it on the stove. So it is for
you these days. In the ‘change is good’ category
you can probably relax, but if you don’t like change,
well, that’s not an option. Consider becoming proactive and
renovating something (metaphorically or materially) this
month. The power of creative transformation is on your
side at least until May 20th. Then you need to trade inspiration
for perspiration and get down to the basics. Make
your plans and inspect all blueprints from the 20th – 26th.
Be fearless in the face of adapting or tossing what simply
will not work. From the 28th you get back on the train to
who knows where?
AQUARIUS: Jan. 20 - Feb. 17
Thoughts have power, no doubt, and words
carry that power far and wide. If you’ve been
working on something you have to say, then
saying it after May 3rd is perfect. You could change the
world from the 9th – 12th, or at least your part of it.
Embrace the change you have engendered between May
16th – 25th, even if it’s not exactly the way you imagined it
would be. Reality checks on May 25th encourage you to
push forward into making something even more creative
and workable. Listen to your elders from the 28th – 31st.
Maybe they wrote books and then went on to join the
ancestors, or maybe they are your parents. Something wise
or simply silly, this way comes.
PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19
A brilliant idea on May 3rd could give rise to
abundance. Do a reality check from the 8th –
12th. Is there support? Do you have means?
Where are the undermining energies located? It’s an idea
whose time has come: Worth waiting for and worth doing
well. Get what you deserve on the 19th but don’t be passive
about it. You may have to wrangle with the holder of the
purse strings. Speak for yourself. No one else may be so
inclined at this time. Look back over the past between the
20th – 26th. It’s a review though, not time for wallowing.
From the 27th there is much to be done and you’re the one
to do it. If you’re intimidated by the prospect, look for supports
that are personal and remind you who you are and
what you’re capable of. This will help you step out into the
world with confidence.
ARIES March 20 - April 19
You’re ready to move ahead from May 3rd. Do
you know where you are going? Listen to the
bass line beat, under the melody, through May
9th to get a sense. Make sure you are getting value for
money or effort on the 10th. Weed your mind garden for
pie-in-the-sky schemes on the 11th. It should be easy and
will help clear the path. Exciting exchanges of ideas with
others between the 12th – 20th encourage you to do it your
way. Even if they don’t agree with you, the interaction
should help you focus. Restrictions on May 25th are simply
because the time is not yet right. Be patient, even for a
day, and you’ll see change. The reality of building the thing
you want and having it express your vision is strong from
the 27th – 31st. It’s not your only chance but it is a time to
go for ‘it’, if ‘it’ is something you can go for.
MAY Horoscope Predictions by Robin Armstrong
ARIES – May will be a month of strong desires and powerful
appetites. You will attract whatever you want. It will come
more through charm than by force. Share your happiness and
give compliments to others. Enjoy yourself!
CANCER –You will be attracted to all things sweet and beautiful
this month. Unfortunately, there will be a significant
cost associated with this attraction. You will be inclined to
spend on impulse. The challenge is to accurately assess what
is worth it and what is not!
SAGITTARIUS –You will attract a lot of attention this month,
but if you try to force issues, it will backfire on you. Enjoy
yourself but with caution. You will be inclined to push too
hard and perhaps even pull a muscle or break something.
This will be a month to pace yourself and recharge.
The Therapeutic Touch®
community is dedicating the
first week of May this year to
drawing awareness to its
healing techniques (see
www.therapeutictouch.net
for events). This technique,
affectionately referred to as
TT, requires no attunements
or prior knowledge or experience.
TT is based on the
premise that healing is an
innate healing potential using
intention and the hands to
clear and balance energy
fields. What is so appealing is
how gently it adapts itself as a
teaching tool to a diverse
audience. Co-founded by
Dolores Krieger and Dora
Kunz in the 1960s, Therapeutic
Touch is a technique
that does not necessarily
require touching. Its three
principles are: a willingness
to help or heal, compassion,
non-attachment to outcome.
One of the jewels of the
Ottawa Valley region is my
friend Pat. She has boundless
energy and puts it all in the
service of good. When she
was exposed to Therapeutic
Touch decades ago, she loved
it so much she became a recognized
teacher and later a
board member. Her commitment
to TT not only brought
me into the fold, it has helped
to shape our community.
Being a rural gal, she understands
that if you offer a
Level One workshop and six
people turn up, you run the
class. After ten such offerings
over a few years, there
are now 60 people within our
TT community, where once
there were none.
Pat has reached out and
taught folks from her Sunday
school classes, farmers,
teachers, hunters, nurses,
those who wanted to heal
themselves, those who started
out thinking it was bunk.
Once they learned how to
practice Therapeutic Touch,
they offered sessions to
friends and family, and soon
there was a variety of individuals
sharing an understanding
that everything is
made of energy, and that it
can be moved around to our
benefit. Therapeutic Touch is
definitely part of a quiet
grassroots revolution that is
shifting the foundations of
our new world.
Last night was our local
monthly Therapeutic Touch
practice night, where practitioners
both give and receive
treatments. Afterward, we
deepened our awareness as
practitioners by sharing how
we experienced energy moving,
what we felt called to do,
and how it felt to receive TT.
Learning from each other is
an important part of expanding
our practice, by learning
to recognize how the energy
turns up for each other.
At this gathering, Pat was
sharing the insights that came
from a quorum of practitioners
who had been invited in
2010 to work with Dr.
Krieger in Montana, to delve
deeply into how healing
emerges. Their ongoing findings,
which became the
‘Montana Dialogues’,
revealed that TT is evolving
as the practitioners themselves
deepen their relationship
with their inner selves.
Likewise, such a reflective
practice deepens the experience
of compassion for both
the practitioner and the
receiver, increasing the healing
momentum.
Take a moment right now
and ground or centre yourself,
the way you usually do.
Now, with ‘soft’ eyes, invite
yourself to ground in compassion
and see what
changes. For me I find the
energy is immediately larger,
and almost hums.
Dolores Krieger, now 95
years old and running huge
workshops, suggested that a
key element to the changing
flow of TT is engagement of
compassion: “Compassion
from the depth of the inner
self results in the release of
an inner vibration which sets
up a silent mantra and alters
the subtle energies. Compassion
is a necessary state of
consciousness for a practitioner
to facilitate healing.”
Perhaps what was most
exciting for the quorum was
discovering that TT, originally
created as a means of
exploring healing touch 50
years ago, is evolving and
teaching the practitioners and
the receivers through the
energy practice itself. They
were able to identify seven
stages of consciousness,
reflecting the inner experiences
of a practitioner as they
work the energy.
“Compassion sculpts the
pranic flow of the energy
which, over time, refashions
the field and expresses itself
through the therapists as
compassionate healing.” (per
Dr. Dolores Krieger).
In part, this deepening of
TT comes naturally from our
own social evolution over the
last 50 years. We are in a
world where we can be
exposed to evolved teachings
and beliefs from around the
world, which once were only
for the initiated. We can
climb to the top seats of the
Dome in Toronto to listen to
the infectious wisdom of the
Dalai Lama of Tibet, curl up
with a quantum physics lecture
on our tablets at the cottage,
and be able to converse
intelligently with friends
about these experiences.
Through dialogue we can
share and deepen our new
understandings, and through
self reflection we can move
through more expanding spirals
of awareness.
As our minds open to possibilities,
our consciousness
expands. As our consciousness
expands, we can deepen
into compassion, and from
there, into self awareness.
Imagine what we, as a collective,
will be able to clear or
energize within our environment,
as we become increasingly
adept at dancing with
energy.
