OPINION
Growing Up Healthy
in a Toxic World
BY HELKE FERRIE
To save the human race from
extinction by increasing the
rate of healthy babies being
born, we will need a number
of interventions, especially
broad access to organic food
and the avoidance of synthetic
chemicals and antibiotics. A
key component of this is also,
of course, the restoration of
the human gut microbiome.
In the late 1990s, a scientist from the World Health
Organization (WHO) presented a computer model at a
conference in Toronto on infertility issues, showing that if
the then-current pollution trends continued, the human race
would go extinct in about 500 years (15 generations).
Humankind would thus follow the same trajectory as the
dinosaurs at the end of the Jurassic era, some 65 million
years ago. In fact, the survival of our species may even be
as threatened as that of the loon, a bird whose eggs can’t
hatch in heavily polluted waters or in environments with
dramatically changing gas compositions in the air.
Today, sperm counts, motility, and quality are still problematic,
and the statistics of a decade ago still hold: In
Western countries, about 25% of people under the age of 25
are infertile, and human sperm count is half the level of the
early 1960s (since pesticides and synthetic chemicals began
to spoil air, water, soil, food, and medicines).
Today we can add the birth control pill to the list of items
with disastrous effects, including DDT and other “gender
bender” pesticides and herbicides which interfere with the
normal development of the next generations’ sperm and
eggs. This list of hormone disrupting chemicals can also be
found in plastic wrap, exhaust fumes, PCBs, and meat and
dairy products from cows fed prophylactic antibiotics and
hormones to increase their bulk before slaughter. Most of
the above was not known or only beginning to be explored
13 years ago. Encouragingly, though, Health Canada is now
paying attention to medical scientists who have long spoken
out on the issue of antibiotics and hormones in food production,
and are now considering stopping this practice.
To save the human race from extinction by
increasing the rate of healthy babies being born, we
will need a number of interventions, especially
broad access to organic food and the avoidance of
synthetic chemicals and antibiotics. A key component
of this is also, of course, the restoration of the
human gut microbiome. (See my Vitality articles of
March 2016, July/August 2016, February 2017, currently
archived on Vitality’s website, for further
information.) These steps require us to make choices
that are both environmentally friendly and kinder
to animals.
Nature is Not for Profit
Margaret Somerville, founding director of McGill
University’s Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law,
observed in her famous book, The Ethical Canary:
Science, Society, and the Human Spirit (2000), that
science, law, the economy, and social policy do not
travel at the same speed – each has its own priorities.
“Nature time” is at odds with human concerns …
but “nature time” always wins. Nature encompasses
both slow geologic shifts as well as rapid biological
mutations that are potentially disastrous when humans disregard
ecological and genetic imperatives. “Business time”
(which wants profits and growth every quarter), “science
time” (which wants no cautionary limits set to its curiosity),
and “social policy time” (which always reacts after the fact),
are all on a collision course with “nature time,” which cares
nothing for profit and theoretical curiosity, and is unforgiving
of tardy social policy.
All diseases have a known history. So-called “idiopathic”
diseases are a myth. The anthropology of disease is the flip
side of the precautionary principle. This principle, first
enunciated in the 1970s when it became part of Germany’s
environmental law, asserted in its 1992 Earth Summit formulation:
“Where there are threats of serious or irreversible
damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as
reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent
environmental degradation.” For ecologist Sandra
Steingraber, this is what “prompts us to buckle seat belts,
get out of the pool when lightning flashes, and throw away
mysterious leftovers discovered in the back of the refrigerator.
It’s why we keep plastic bags and books of matches away
from young children.”
The classic 1989 study by Mark Nathan Cohen, Health
and the Rise of Civilization, provides a magisterial survey of
the evolution and origins of infectious disease and chronic
illnesses starting two million years ago. The first experiments
with agriculture, 10,000 years ago, reduced food
diversity to reliance on just a few staples and resulted in
those foods becoming less nutritious through domestication.
Osteoporosis followed, while cancer and infectious disease
gained a foothold in bodies that genetically had not changed
level of the early 1960s
In the 1930s, dentist Weston
(since pesticides and other
A. Price compared the
chemicals began to contaminate
air, water, soil,
development of teeth and
facial bone structure over
several generations in peoples
all over the world by
food, and medicines)
looking at their diets. This research identified what constituted
essential nutrients that were present in the diets of
those “primitives” who were totally healthy.
Price also discovered that those Western societies which
had adopted a refined carbohydrate diet (today called the
standard American diet or SAD), showed high prevalence of
bad teeth and chronic illness. This is considered the beginning
of the study of nutritional medicine as a science.
Subsequent research has shown that hunter-gatherer societies
get a minimum of 60,000 mg of vitamin C per day
from their diet, while modern Western diets are often virtually
devoid of this essential vitamin.
In 1983, two researchers affiliated with Cornell
University began a groundbreaking 20-year study that compared
the disease burden of Chinese and American peoples.
The results showed that the “diseases of affluence” include
cancer, leukemia, diabetes, and coronary disease – all triggered
by the lack of essential nutrients that are refined out
of our food. The “diseases of poverty” are infectious diseases,
tuberculosis, and parasites, due to malnutrition from
overall calorie and protein scarcity. As in Dr. Price’s
research, the results also show that once food intake became
adequate, optimal health depended on the same set of essential
nutrients, and illness was associated with our denatured
SAD (see Campbell and Campbell 2005).
At a conference in May 2003 at Mount Sinai’s School of
Medicine in New York, co-hosted by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), researchers examined
the so-called “Barker hypothesis,” named after a
British physician who noted that “exposures and risk factors
encountered early in life can predispose an individual to the
development of disease later in life.” Today we call such illnesses
epigenetic (see my feature published in the February
2017 Vitality, archived at www.vitalitymagazine.com), and
chief among these are Parkinson’s, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
How the Environment Affects Kids’ Health
At the WHO conference mentioned earlier, we learned that
when a fetus or child is exposed to environmental neurotoxins
(from, say, pesticides or solvents), “silent damage is
inflicted” on the brain that contributes much later to overwhelming
damage. For example, the development of
Parkinson’s is significantly correlated with postnatal expo-
sure to pesticides, which diminish the number of neurons
that maintain appropriate levels of dopamine responsible for
all fine-motor movement. If a person is re-exposed later to
even low levels of pesticides, dopamine production erodes.
The same process is at work in predisposing children to
heart disease via mothers’ exposure to various environmental
toxins, including in her teeth (mercury amalgam) and
diet. The overall conclusion was that environmental toxins
“induce effects that can be transgenerational” because
“exposure to environmental agents in the womb can alter
gene expression in the developing fetus.”
If there are to be healthy children in humanity’s future,
research suggests that immediate action is needed to
address our exposure to various toxic compounds. The
September 2003 article by Hauser et al. in Environmental
Health Perspectives (EHP) showed that chlorine’s damaging
effects start with sperm. Similarly, maternal exposure to
DDT (banned in North America since the 1970s, but still
present in foods arriving from Asia and Africa) can cause
neurological damage in offspring. Phthalates can, due to
their estrogenic effect, cause a shortening of pregnancy,
thereby priming the low-weight, premature baby for various
health risks throughout life (EHP, Nov. 14, 2003).
Commercial flame retardants used in electric appliances
and building materials are highly carcinogenic – yet they are
being found in 37% of breast milk in North America, thereby
setting up nursing children for later cancer. As reported
in the National Post on October 6, 2016, Ontario’s Liberal
government opined how useful fluoridation is, citing that
dental health in Calgary declined when water fluoridation
was stopped. However, dental health declines dramatically
in the presence of sugar in all its forms, from pop to candy;
fluoride not only doesn’t prevent dental carries, it increases
neurological damage and the risk of cancer.
Because kid’s immune systems mature over their first few
years, exposure to pesticides during that time sets them up
for all kinds of immune disease later on (World Resources
Institute study by R. Repetto, 2000). Furthermore, the effect
of pesticides on brain development was graphically illustrated
by Elizabeth Guillette’s two-decade study of children’s
drawings. She observed the development of Mexican
children born and raised in a village where pesticides were
used liberally, and compared them with children in a
foothills area where no pesticides were ever used. The perceptual
and mental skills of the valley children not only
lagged dramatically behind those of the foothills children,
but were beyond repair (EHP, June 1998). This study
demonstrated the staggering implications of these chemicals
for the future. At the WHO conference, Dr. Philip J.
Landrigan pointed out that even a five-point shift in the
average IQ of a population (via, for example, prenatal exposure
to pesticides) almost doubles the number of brain-damaged
children and halves the number of gifted ones.
Fortunately, nature is stubbornly resilient. In a 10-year
feline study, Dr. Francis Pottenger showed in the 1930s the
10 VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

following: healthy cats fed a diet similar to our standard
American diet produced offspring with chronic illnesses by
the second generation; the third generation was mostly
infertile. However, those few who were able to reproduce
had perfectly healthy cats three generations later, if all three
generations were given a nutrient-rich diet.
So, where do we go from here? We have the knowledge to
make good choices. Consider the results of a National
Institutes of Health study (EHP, Oct. 31, 2002) showing
that simply by feeding children organic food, those neurotoxic
and carcinogenic pesticides were dramatically reduced
in all body fluids and tissues. “Honey, let me have that book
of matches” should become: “Honey, eat this organic apple
and let’s chuck that toxic commercially grown one.”
Strategies for Raising Healthy Kids
l If you are planning a baby, go to a naturopath and ask
them to supervise a year-long detox program for you – a
general detox of each parent’s body is well advised.
l Avoid carcinogenic, benzene-containing, perfumed toiletries,
and ensure that toothpaste does not contain neurotoxic
and thyroid-damaging fluoride and phenols.
l Invest in a water filtration system that removes fluoride,
chlorine, pesticides, etc.
l Use cornstarch-based body powders instead of talcum
(which is now known to trigger ovarian cancer).
l Use environmentally friendly laundry detergent, and
12 VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

vinegar for its water softening and anti-cling effects.
Conventional detergents have been linked to cancer. Tide ® ,
for example, contains a lengthy list of carcinogens and neurotoxins,
all of which are identified as such by the EPA. For
a detailed discussion, see Dr. Mercola’s Dec. 21, 2011, article:
“Are you poisoning your household with this chore?”[1]
Healthy and eco-friendly laundry detergents (i.e. Nature
Clean, Simply Clean, EcoMax, etc.) are available in health
food stores. They are free of sodium lauryl sulfate and 1,4-
dioxane, and are biodegradable so they don’t pollute our
waterways. This recommendation to switch is now backed
by more than 16,000 formal studies!
l Organic baby food is now available in glass instead of
plastic, fortified with essential fatty acids and B vitamins,
and free of hydrogenated vegetable oils.
l Protect against future diabetes by cutting out the soft
drinks, refined sugars, and refined baked goods – as the
WHO guidelines of April 2003 urged.
l Make sure your dentist does not put carcinogenic and
neurotoxic mercury amalgam into your child’s mouth – and
have those fillings removed if they are in there. Refuse or
remove any root canals. (www.IAOMT.org). (Editor’s note: All
the best holistic dentists can be found on page 40,41 in this
issue.)
l Never get the flu shot, due to its high mercury content.
l Don’t use pesticides, especially not Roundup. Its active
ingredient, glyphosate, is now known as a carcinogen; it
suppresses the detoxification enzymes of the liver’s
cytochrome P450. (It also kills bees and butterflies.)
Do not rely on information from Health Canada. It is
rarely accurate and never, in my experience, complete.
Life survives our most enormous stupidities, misjudgments,
and appalling acts of arrogance – at a horrendous
cost, yet unstoppably so. May we take comfort in nature’s
determined intelligence.
14 VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

The World Health Organization
has reported that breast cancer is
by far the most frequent cancer
found among women, with an estimated
1.67 million cases diagnosed
worldwide in 2012, comprising 25%
of all female cancers.[1]
Approximately 23,420 of those
women were from Canada. In 2012,
about 522,000 women worldwide
died from the disease, almost 5,000
of them from Canada.[2] These numbers
are staggering and the collective
toll on women and their families has
been devastating.
Now that the myth “mammography
screening prevents breast cancer
deaths” has been debunked, it’s time
to focus on real prevention. The
Canadian National Breast Cancer
Screening Study, published in the
British Medical Journal on February
10, 2014, studied almost 90,000 women aged 40 to 59 from
across Canada. The findings revealed that the number of
women who died from breast cancer was the same whether
they received mammograms annually for five years or had
annual physical breast exams only. During the five-year
screening period, 666 invasive breast cancers were diagnosed
in the women who were screened using mammography,
while 524 were found in those receiving physical
breast exams. Both groups received the usual medical treatment
for breast cancer. Out of all of these women, 180 in
the screening mammogram group and 171 in the physical
exam group died of breast cancer during the 25-year followup
period. Surprisingly, early detection through mammography
did not reduce deaths due to breast cancer.[3]
If early detection does not reduce breast cancer deaths,
then where might we focus our attention and health care
dollars to decrease the psychological, familial, social,
financial and global burden of breast cancer? I think it’s
time for real breast cancer prevention.
Although breast cancer is a disease that could happen to
any of us, there is much we can do to help prevent it. Being
personally, politically, and globally proactive with preven-
We know a lot about many of the
causes of breast cancer. Knowing the
causes guides us toward solutions.
A good place to start is by incorporating
the following breast-friendly
foods into your diet on a regular
basis:
– freshly ground flaxseeds
– broccoli sprouts
– red clover sprouts
– garlic, onions
– rosemary, pomegranate
– shiitake mushrooms
– brassica family, including:
(broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage,
Brussels sprouts, kale)
– tomatoes, watercress
– legumes, seaweeds
– extra virgin olive oil
– Brazil nuts
RECIPES
Lifestyle Strategies for
Breast Cancer Prevention
Here are 11 things that women can do
to prevent breast cancer:
1) Exercise at least 40 minutes each
day or 4 hours a week, outside of your
normal activities (walk, jog, swim,
dance, cycle, rebound, use an elliptical
machine, etc)[4]
2) Reduce or limit alcohol to no
more than 2 beverages per week.[5]
3) Adopt a primarily vegetarian diet.
Minimize or avoid meat and animal
fat, using instead legumes (lentils,
chickpeas, split peas, mung beans, etc), plus nuts and seeds.
Reduce or avoid sugar, other than in fresh fruit. Choose
organic food whenever possible.[6]
4) Sleep in a dark room, with no light from the street,
alarm clock, or cell phones in your bedroom. Use a night
light in the washroom. To keep melatonin levels high and
your biological rhythms intact, avoid turning on any bright
lights at night.[7]
5) Spend 15 minutes outside exposing your arms and legs
to sunlight daily when the weather allows it. Monitor vitamin
D levels in blood annually, and if it is low, take 1000 to 5000
IU of vitamin D3 daily, especially during winter months.[8]
Super Golden Milk can help prevent cancer
by decreasing inflammation and infection,
while providing beneficial antioxidants
6) Avoid use of the birth control
pills[9] and/or hormone replacement
therapy.[10]
7) Avoid cosmetics, nail polish,
toothpaste, shampoo, and other personal
care products containing parabens
(methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl
Natural Relief for
Summer Allergies
Black Elder Flower and
Vitamin C to the Rescue
BY MICHAEL VERTOLLI, CH
June is one of my favourite
months. In our part of the
world, it is the month when
everything is the most green
and lush, and our temperate
woodlands resemble the lushness
of a tropical rainforest.
Spending time in nature is
important throughout the
year. Almost every aspect of
our culture and lifestyle tends
to cut us off from it, but maintaining
our connection with
nature and the earth is an
essential part of any healthy
lifestyle. It’s impossible to be
in balance and harmony when
we are cut off from our roots.
I recommend that everyone
spend time outdoors, every
day, even if all we can manage
is a walk or a few minutes
Black elder flower
is one of the most
effective herbs used in
Western herbalism for
treating symptoms
associated with hay
fever, such as sneezing
and runny nose
of contemplation in a local city park. It’s important to leave
the cell phone behind and not just move through a natural
space, but to also find a spot that makes us feel good where
we can sit, take in the energy of the place, and just be.
There are a number of species of plants that bloom
around the summer solstice. Every year when they begin to
flower, I am reminded that we are transitioning from spring
into summer. In the open fields, the plant I most associate
with the beginning of summer is the common St. Johnswort
(Hypericum perforatum). And, in transition areas and woodlands,
it is black elder (Sambucus nigra).
Summer Allergies Caused by Tree Pollen
There are many people for whom roaming around in the
outdoors at this time of year is not a pleasant experience
because they suffer from pollen allergies. The majority of
our tree species flower from April to June. Grasses tend to
flower in June and July. Many trees and grasses are pollinated
by the wind instead of by insects. These species produce
copious amounts of pollen that blow around in the air
at this time of year.
Our typical modern diet and lifestyle causes people to
ecome more prone to immune system imbalances. As a
result, autoimmune conditions, such as allergies, are becoming
increasingly more common. Add in poor air quality as a
factor and there is an increased likelihood that an immune
imbalance will manifest as respiratory allergies such as hay
fever or allergic asthma. This can be further aggravated by
smoking – anything, not just cigarettes!
Pollen allergies can be debilitating. I remember having
hay fever as a child – in July and August my nose would
sometimes run like a tap for days. It wasn’t painful, but it
was definitely one of the most irritating things I’ve experienced.
Later on, I radically changed my diet and lifestyle
and began using herbs in my late teens, so allergies were not
an issue for me any more, but I can empathize with those
who do suffer with them.
Along with improving our diet and lifestyle and getting
more exercise, there are many herbs that are effective in
helping to reduce allergy symptoms. There are even some
that in the long run can help eliminate allergies altogether.
Herbs for Treating Allergies
Black elder flower is one of the most effective herbs used in
Western herbalism for treating hay fever-like symptoms.
Elder flowers can be used fresh or dried as a tea or tincture.
Some of the herbs that elder flower combines well with
for treating hay fever symptoms include: yarrow herb
(Achillea millefolium); common purple coneflower herb
(Echinacea purpurea); boneset
herb (Eupatorium perfo-
fresh or dried flowers of
Tinctures made from the
liatum); purple loosestrife black elder are readily
herb (Lythrum salicaria); available in stores that
German chamomile flower
sell herbal products
(Matricaria recutita); garden
sage (Salvia officinalis);
goldenrod herb (Solidago spp.) and blue vervain herb
(Verbena hastata). All of these herbs grow or can be grown
in our area.
You can make a simple formulation by combining twoparts
elder flower to one-part each of two of the above
herbs, either as a tea or tincture. Keep in mind that yarrow,
boneset, and blue vervain are very bitter, so you will probably
only want to use one of them in any given combination.
If you are making a tea, steep a couple of teaspoons of your
herb mixture for 10-15 minutes in a covered cup. You can
add a small amount of sweetener if desired. The dosage of a
tincture varies depending on its strength. If you make a simple
tincture the way I suggest above, you will have something
close to a 1:5 tincture for which the adult dosage is a
teaspoon or slightly less. For teenagers, use the adult dose.
For children 12 and under, the dose is adjusted based on
their weight. Whether you use a tea or tincture, it should be
taken three to four times per day on an empty stomach
whenever you are experiencing hay fever symptoms. Take it
more frequently on bad days. You can take it up to six times
per day. The frequency of the dosage depends on the severity
of your symptoms.
Make your own tincture: The tincture made from the fresh
flowers is preferred, but other preparations are also effective.
Dried elder flowers and tinctures made from the fresh or
dried flowers are readily available in stores that sell herbal
products. We can also dry the flowers ourselves or make a
tincture of fresh flowers.
To make a tincture, fill a wide-mouthed glass jar (amber
if possible) with lightly chopped elder flowers and add a
mixture of three-parts vodka to one-part water. The flowers
have to be chopped and the vodka-water mixture added to
them very quickly or the flowers will turn brown, which
means that they have oxidized too much. Store the jar in a
dark cupboard and shake it daily for the first week or two.
Let it sit for at least a month before pressing and filtering it.
Three months is preferable, but it will maintain its potency
for years if undisturbed. Once it is filtered it begins to
degrade and should ideally be used within six months, so it
is best not to filter it until you need to use it. This tincture
can be used on its own or in combination with other herbs.
More Herbs and Vitamins for Allergy Relief
For anyone who has hay fever, there are other things that can
be done to help. It’s important to eat lots of fruit and vegetables,
and to significantly reduce consumption of
processed foods, sugar, dairy products and gluten-containing
grains such as wheat, durum, kamut, spelt, rye, oats and
Vitamin C can also be helpful
during allergy season. For this
purpose, it must be taken in the
form of mineral ascorbates
instead of ascorbic acid. Calcium
ascorbate is the most common. It
works best when combined with
polyphenols such as flavonoids
(quercetin is one of the most
effective for allergies), and
anthocyanin extracts such as
from pine bark, grape seed or
berries. These should be taken
one to three times per day with
meals, depending on the severity
of your symptoms, beginning
a couple of weeks before
you expect your allergies to
start and continuing to the end of the season.
More Benefits of Elder Flower Medicine
Black elder flower is very effective for runny nose symptoms,
regardless of the cause. It can also be used for colds,
influenza, and sinus infections. For infectious conditions, it
has the added benefit of being an excellent immune stimulant
and antiviral. It is very effective for lowering fever and
provides some minor benefit for coughs as well.
Black elder flower has many other uses. It helps improve
blood and lymphatic circulation in the extremities of the
body. It also improves circulation to the brain, which aids
concentration and memory. Elder is effective for the treatment
of inflammatory conditions of the urinary tract, such
as cystitis. It is also mildly detoxifying. As a result, it can be
used in combination with other detoxifying herbs for the
treatment of chronic inflammatory
conditions of the skin,
joints, and muscles such as
acne, eczema, and rheumatoid
arthritis. No matter what we
use it for, we will also benefit
from its calming properties
which help to reduce the
effects of stress. In all of these
applications, the dosage is
similar to that mentioned
above for allergies.
In Native American traditions, it was primarily the leaves,
bark, and roots of black elder that were used medicinally,
although the berries were sometimes used as well. In modern
Western herbalism, although the flowers are most often
recommended, we also use the berries. They are not as effective
for the treatment of allergies, respiratory infections and
fever. However, like the flowers, the berries are detoxifying
and often recommended for chronic inflammatory conditions.
They also have a mild laxative action and can be useful
for chronic constipation.
All in all, black elder flower is an herb that is great to keep
on hand all year round. For those of us who suffer from
allergies, it can be an important part of an overall strategy to
help reduce allergy symptoms. Elder can help make it easier
for those of us with allergies to enjoy the great outdoors
at this amazing time of year.
CHILI PEPPER COM-
POUND MAY HELP CURE
COLITIS AND DIABETES
New evidence shows that,
when eaten, both chili peppers
and marijuana interact
with a receptor in the stomach
and appear to inhibit
inflammation, which may
lead to new therapies for diabetes
researchers actually cured
mice of diabetes by feeding
them chili pepper extract.
They fed mice capsaicin, the
active compound in chili peppers,
and found that the mice
experienced reduced levels of
inflammation in their guts.
When the scientists investigated
what was occurring at
the molecular level, they
found that the capsaicin was
binding to a receptor
(TRPV1) found on specialized
cells throughout the gastrointestinal
tract. When this
chili pepper compound binds
to these cell receptors, they
produce anandamide, a
chemical similar to the
cannabinoid in marijuana
that essentially tells the
immune system to calm
down. These receptors are
also found in brain cells; it
makes some sense therefore,
that these gut receptors can
communicate with the brain,
which in turn calms the
immune system.
VITAMIN B SUPPLEMENTS
OFFSET HEART EFFECTS OF POLLUTION
New research shows that supplementing with B vitamins can
mitigate the impact of a type of pollution known as PM2.5,
pollution with specific tiny size of fine particle, on cardiovascular
disease. (This is the first human clinical trial to evaluate
whether B vitamin supplements can change the biologic
and physiologic responses to ambient air pollution exposure
and potentially help contain its negative health effects.
Ambient fine particulate pollution contributes to 3.7 million
premature deaths annually worldwide, mostly via effects on
the cardiovascular system, but also via immune system suppression.
Particulate matter pollution is the most frequent
trigger for heart attack.)
Healthy non-smokers who took vitamin B supplements
nearly reversed any negative effects of fine-particle pollution
on their cardiovascular and immune systems. They reduced
the effects of air pollution on their heart rate by 150%, on
their total white blood cell count by 139%, and on their lymphocyte
(an immune cell) count by 106%. The principal
investigator commented that this suggests B vitamins may
reduce the inflammatory effect of pollution; inflammation is
a common factor in diseases and death of the elderly. The
study only enlisted subjects who took no form of vitamin B
supplements previously, and so those already supplementing
might not derive further protection from increased supplementation.
Also, the protection afforded may be reduced in
some higher-pollution cities. This study was recently posted
at the website of Scientific Reports and will be published in
an upcoming issue of this journal. The full report is now
CAMPING, SUNLIGHT CAN RESET
BODY CLOCKS TO EARLIER TIMING
Researchers have reported more evidence to suggest that one
solution to the growing problem of people staying up late and
throwing off body rhythms could be spending more time outdoors
in the sun, specifically suggesting that a few days spent
backcountry camping is sufficient to send people to bed earlier,
no matter the season. (Many people now stay up late into
the night, watching TV, fiddling with smartphones, or reading
a book by lamplight with the result that getting up to the
morning alarm is difficult. Late circadian and sleep-timing in
modern society are associated with negative performance
and health outcomes such as morning sleepiness and accidents,
reduced work productivity and school performance,
Modern exposure to electrical lighting causes about a twohour
delay in our internal clocks, evidenced by a shift in the
normal fluctuations of the hormone melatonin.)
A week of summer sun can shift internal clocks back,
sending people to bed earlier, without changing how long
they slept. To assess wintertime effects, the team sent people
camping for a week in the Colorado winter at solstice when
days are shortest, with no flashlights or phones allowed.
With increased time spent outdoors, subjects started going to
bed at an earlier time. Their internal clocks, measured by the
timing of when melatonin levels began to rise in their bodies,
shifted more than 2.5 hours earlier. Their sleeping patterns
followed these changes in melatonin levels and people
went to sleep earlier. Also, a single weekend spent camping
was found to be enough to break the late-night habit, weekend
sleep-in habit, and the later-shifting of circadian clocks.
DIET SODA DRINKS BOOST DEMENTIA RISK
A new study has found that people who drink diet soda daily
are more likely to develop stroke and dementia when compared
to those who do not. (Prior studies linked diet soda
intake to stroke risk, but the link with dementia was not previously
known.) Researchers examined whether participants
had been diagnosed with a stroke or dementia due to
Alzheimer’s. After measuring beverage intake at three points
over seven years, researchers monitored the volunteers for
another 10 years, seeking evidence of stroke in people over
age 45 and of dementia in participants over age 60. They
found no correlation between sugary beverage intake and
stroke or dementia.
However, they did find that people who drank at least one
diet soda per day were almost three times as likely to develop
stroke and dementia. Although the researchers took age,
smoking, diet quality, and other factors into account, the team
was quick to point out that these findings demonstrate correlation
but not cause-and-effect. This study did not differentiate
NUTRIENT IN MEAT AND EGG YOLKS
RAISES BLOOD-CLOTTING RISK
Researchers have found that a nutrient found in meat and eggs
may conspire with gut bacteria to make the blood more prone
to clotting. (Researchers are just beginning to understand how
gut bacteria and their byproducts affect the cardiovascular
system. Choline is an essential nutrient required for brain
function and is needed for the production of acetylcholine,
which is an anti-aging neurotransmitter. Choline is found in
egg yolks, beef, chicken, salmon, liver, cauliflower, and
Brussel sprouts.)
The study team gave 450 mg of choline to 18 healthy volunteers
on a daily basis for two months. Of those 18, 10 were
meat-eaters and eight were vegans or vegetarians. The
researchers found that the choline boosted the production of a
chemical called TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) by 10-fold.
TMAO, produced when gut bacteria digest choline, makes
particular blood platelets that are more prone to sticking
together and causing a clot.
Past studies have linked higher TMAO levels in the blood
to heightened risks of blood clots, heart attack and stroke.
This is the first study to show the links between choline, gut
bacteria, and greater susceptibility to clotting. It is critical to
note that choline is essential to the nerves and brain, the body
cannot make enough for its needs, many people do not absorb
choline well, and the Western diet is higher in choline than
other diets. Also, a compound in olive oil (as well as baby
aspirin) seems to help inhibit TMAO formation.
Scientists hope to yet learn what exact mix of gut bacteria
best support cardiovascular health. This study was published
QUESTION OF EATING OR FASTING BEFORE
EXERCISE FINALLY ANSWERED
A new study shows that fasting prior to exercising alters gene
expression to provide beneficial effects on adipose (fat) tissue,
and that this effect does not occur when exercise follows
eating. (Exercise enthusiasts have often debated whether it is
best to take in nutrients prior to working out or to fast preexercise.
This study highlights the different roles that fat
cells play in powering and responding to exercise.)
Male volunteers first walked for 60 minutes at 60% maximum
oxygen consumption on an empty stomach, and at a
later time did the same two hours after consuming a highcalorie,
carbohydrate-rich breakfast. The researchers took
multiple blood samples after eating, after fasting, and after
each of the exercise sessions. They also collected adipose tissue
samples just before, and one hour after, walking. The
expression of two genes (PDK4 and HSL) increased when
participants exercised after fasting and decreased when they
exercised after eating. The increased gene expression indicates
that stored fat was used to fuel metabolism during exercise
while the decreased gene expression indicates that the
carbohydrates from the meal were used as fuel instead.
The author explained that after a person eats, their adipose
(fat) tissue is busy responding to the meal, and a bout of
exercise at this time will not stimulate the same fat-burning
benefits. Exercise in a fasted state provokes more favourable
changes in adipose tissue. This study was posted online at the
FURRY PETS PROTECT BABIES
FROM ALLERGIES AND OBESITY
A new study has found that exposure to furry animals such as
cats and dogs, both during pregnancy and after birth, helps
children to naturally develop two specific types of intestinal
bacteria. One is associated with a reduced risk of developing
allergies, and the other is linked to a lower risk of becoming
obese. When researchers analyzed fecal samples from 746
babies, they found that having dogs and cats in the home during
pregnancy and early infancy led to higher levels of two
gut microbes: Ruminococcus and Oscillospira.
Ruminococcus appears to lower the risk of allergies; evidence
suggests that Oscillospira lowers odds of obesity.
Regardless of how the babies were delivered, they were
more than twice as likely to have high levels of these beneficial
intestinal bacteria when exposed to furry animals while
in the womb or during infancy. Pet exposure was also linked
to lower fecal levels of harmful Enterobacteria, which are
linked to Salmonella and other infections, even among babies
born by emergency cesarean who normally have high levels
of these microbes at three months of age. While the study
does not demonstrate exactly how cats and dogs cause
changes in gut bacteria, the microbiome composition of the
infant may be affected by the vaginal or skin microbes transferred
from the animals to the mother. Changes in the
microbes of the mother can be passed on during birth, even
with a surgical delivery. After that, pets may be directly transferring
beneficial microbes when they touch babies and
infants and may also pass along microbes that are left on
household surfaces or in dust.
journal Microbiome. The full study is now available at
THE NEW OXYGEN PRE-
SCRIPTION: THE MIRACLE
OF OXIDATIVE THERAPIES
by Nathaniel Altman
Healing Arts Press; June 2017
Scientists now agree that
most disease states are
caused by oxygen starvation
at a cellular level. Polluted
air, devitalized foods, and
poor breathing habits can all
lead to chronic oxygen deficiency,
a bodily environment
in which toxins thrive
as the overall immune
response is weakened.
Through oxidative therapies
– the medical use of ozone
(O3) or hydrogen peroxide
(H2O2) – we can assist the
body in generating oxygen
needed to oxidate viruses
and bacteria as well as weak
and sick tissue cells, so
stronger and healthier cells
can take their place.
Those seeking the science
behind this therapeutic protocol
will be pleased to
learn about the newly
released The New Oxygen
Prescription, which presents
the latest clinical findings
from Cuba, Italy,
Spain, China, Russia, and
the U.S, plus recommendations
from the International
Scientific Committee of
Ozone Therapy, (ISCO3). In
www.vitalitymagazine.com

this book, Nathaniel Altman
explores the effectiveness of
oxidative therapies for treating
a wide range of conditions,
including heart disease,
HIV, herpes, diabetes,
candida, tonsillitis, macular
degeneration, herniated
discs, burns, and arthritis.
He shows how Cuban and
Russian physicians have
been successfully treating
heart disease patients with
ozone therapy for decades,
and explains how ozone
interacts with cells when
introduced into the bloodstream,
stimulating the
body’s own ability to fight
cancer, osteoporosis, and
hepatitis. He also investigates
promising new studies
on the use of ozone and
hydrogen peroxide therapies
to treat Alzheimer’s,
Crohn’s, multiple sclerosis,
emphysema, eczema, and
sepsis.
Providing a detailed
resource section, the author
explains how to combine
oxidative therapies with
holistic methods such as
fasting, detox therapies,
herbal medicine and nutritional
healing for a stronger
start on the path to optimum
health.
These findings naturally
have direct implications for
the management of serious
infectious diseases. With the
ongoing development of
more and more antibioticresistant
new generation of electronic
gadgets and wireless services,
sometimes referred to
as the “Internet of Things,”
more people are asking
themselves these questions:
– Are the ever-increasing
levels of electromagnetic
fields (EMFs) really safe for
living organisms;
– Are these wireless
devices to be used only for
the convenience of private
persons, or are they just as
convenient for surveillance
of the public by political,
military, and commercial
entities;
– Do some gadgets create
an open door for advanced
cyber attacks of homes,
schools, and workplaces;
– Do electromagnetic frequencies
pose a threat to
public health?
In the early 1980s, I decided
that this is an issue which
needs to be looked at more
closely, and perhaps even
needs an awakening – to stop
it before it turns on us, other
animals, plants and bacteria,
as the “Idiocy of Things”!?
From a public health point
of view, evidence in the form
of thousands of peer reviewbased
scientific publications
is overwhelming – now society
must dare to protect and
to serve. Our actions must
aim to serve our health and
safety, not to serve commercial
greed. Failing to protect
ourselves leaves us open to
attack that may harm us far
more than any terrorists ever
can.
Lyme Disease Sufferer Finds Treatment
Outside Canada’s Medical Mainstream
My name is Lianne Spencer, I am Paige Spencer’s mom.
My daughter has been battling Lyme disease for over 15
years. I have attached some articles and information about
Paige, including a speech that she gave at Queen’s Park.
Here’s an excerpt: “Our Province is already far behind
regarding this serious pandemic. If a reliable and solid
action plan is not inaugurated, our province will face a serious
health crisis. We talk so highly of our health care system,
yet many Lyme-infected individuals, including myself,
are forced to seek refuge in another country for medical
treatments for a chronic illness that apparently is nonexistent
here in Ontario. Stage 2 and 3 patients seek treatment in
America and even Germany, spending outrageous sums of
money to get their lives back. Many cannot afford proper
treatment and some face the fear, like my family, of losing
their home due to medical bills. How does this make our
province look? We are swarming with Lyme disease here,
yet it’s not even recognized, our blood testing is flawed, our
research is unreliable, thousands are getting misdiagnosed,
and the people who are sick and debilitated have to travel to
another country just to be treated like humans. If Bill 27 is
passed, we will be on our way to a healthy and safe
province, not only taking long-term action and care with
Lyme disease but also bringing attention to other vectorborne
and zoonotic diseases. This is not just about treatment
for the sick, we are trying to prevent Lyme disease from
infecting healthy people too.”
Paige is well versed about this disease. After years of
antibiotic and homeopathic treatment in Buffalo, she now
sees an Ontario naturopath, Dr. Angela Lee, who specializes
in the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme Disease. [Dr. Lee is
based in Richmond Hill, Ont. Call (905) 237-7031; email:
lyme.essentialscanada@gmail.com]
Now my daughter knows a lot about homeopathic medication,
and plans on attending college for natural/alternative
medicine. Paige gives advice and helps hundreds of
people. The public would benefit from reading an article on
the natural alternatives to treat this disease.
Paige has spoken in the Legislature, and been interviewed
by Breakfast Television, CBC, Toronto Sun, Scarborough
Mirror, 1010 Talk Radio, and met with Dr. Hoskins,
Minister of Health, to tell her story and to work with a government
committee for future plans to educate and treat
Lyme patients. Here is a link to a video that was made about
Fibromyalgia has now been
recognized as a distinct disease
entity by the World Health
Organization and the American
College of Rheumatology, and
more physicians and
researchers have become interested
in studying it. In 1999, the
American National Institutes of
Health spent $4.7 million on
fibromyalgia research, up from
$3.1 million in 1998, and three
times the funding provided in
1993. Research aimed at uncovering
the cause(s) of fibromyalgia,
as well as developing treatments
and perhaps even a cure,
is currently conducted or overseen
by several organizations,
including the American
National Institute of
I use acupuncture
very good
Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and National Centre of
Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
A Brief History of Fibromyalgia
Symptoms of muscle aches and body pains have been
described throughout history. In the Bible (Job 30:17), Job
laments, “The night racks my bones, and the pain that gnaws
me takes no rest.” Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite and
originated the Nobel Prize, may have endured fibromyalgia,
too. Many letters to his mistress describe multiple muscle
aches and pains, migraine headaches, gastrointestinal disturbances,
cold intolerance, and problems when the weather
changed.
Finally, in 1987, the American Medical Association recognized
fibromyalgia as a legitimate illness, largely due to a
study by Dr. Don Goldenberg, published in the Journal of
the American Medical Association (JAMA), which
described the symptoms, lab findings, and treatment results
of 118 patients with fibromyalgia. Goldenberg used the
terms ‘fibrositis’ and ‘fibromyalgia’ interchangeably at the
beginning of the paper, before switching to the exclusive use
of ‘fibromyalgia’ throughout the rest of the paper.
In another JAMA article, Dr. Robert Bennett wrote: “The
term fibromyalgia has evolved from another with the same
meaning, namely, fibrositis.” The latter term, Bennett
www.vitalitymagazine.com

argued, was a misnomer and inaccurate. ‘Itis’ implies
inflammation, but muscle biopsies of patients with
fibromyalgia typically do not show evidence of inflammation,
and the pain of fibromyalgia usually does not respond
well to anti-inflammatory medications. ‘Myalgia’, on the
other hand, refers to pain of the muscles without implying
inflammation. ‘Myalgia’ is therefore a more appropriate
term to use.
On January 1, 1993, the Copenhagen Declaration established
fibromyalgia as an official disease recognized by the
World Health Organization. The document described the
condition as painful, non-articular (not in the joints), and
predominantly involving the muscles. The World Health
Organization added several other symptoms to the list,
including “the presence of unexplained widespread pain or
aching, persistent fatigue, generalized morning stiffness,
and non-refreshing sleep.”
The Copenhagen Declaration also recognized depression
and anxiety as possible manifestations of the syndrome, and
declared the problem to be the most common cause of
chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain.
After decades of being snubbed by mainstream medicine,
the collection of symptoms we now call fibromyalgia went
from a questionable diagnosis to the world’s most common
cause of chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain. In terms
of official medical recognition, fibromyalgia has arrived.
www.vitalitymagazine.com
VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 59

Because so few medical doctors recognize fibromyalgia
when they see it, and because the condition resembles, and
even overlaps with, so many other health problems,
fibromyalgia is often missed or misdiagnosed. Sometimes
the medical doctor suggests that it’s all in the patient’s head.
In fact, it’s all in the body, potentially affecting many different
systems, including the musculoskeletal, digestive,
immune, circulatory, endocrine, and nervous systems.
Can it be treated or cured? Unfortunately, it is quite difficult
to treat this problem using traditional Western medicine.
Some holistic family physicians try to use alternative ways
to heal, often with better results.
Traditional Chinese Medical Point of View
First of all, the medical concepts between East and West are
very different. I often use the term ‘macro correlation concept’.
We cannot apply mechanistic thinking to the human
body because it is an organic whole. Second, looking at the
activity of cells or organs is not enough.
From my personal experience, since I was a kid, I have
observed my mother and sister complaining about muscle
pain when my family was under a lot of stress. After 30
years of practising acupuncture in different parts of the
world, such as California, New York, Toronto, and different
cities in China, I have noticed that more people suffer this
disease in large cities, rather than in the countryside.
The Bible of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yellow
Emperor Classic, written by scholars approximately 2,600
years ago, mentions that ‘qi block’ causes pain. What is qi?
Apparently, Chinese scientists are piecing together the fundamental
characteristics of qi (life energy). So far, they
know that it has four characteristics: electric, magnetic,
infrared, and infrasonic. So many scientists in China are
now concentrating their work in this field that a special
branch of science – chiconology – has been developed.
In physical terms, human beings can be reduced to a collection
of electromagnetic fields. What we perceive as solid
tissue is actually a mass of cells made up of chemical substances
that are collections of atoms. Every action consists
of protons (positively charged), neutrons (no charge), and
electrons (negatively charged). Electrons are more easily
dislodged from atoms than protons, and are the main carriers
of electric charge. Thus, at the atomic level, the body is
a mass of energy fields that influence one another.
I often use acupuncture and Chinese herbs to reduce the
blockage of qi in the human body. Depending on where the
blockage occurs (different parts of the body relate to different
organs and different energy channels, namely meridians),
the results can be very good because acupuncture consists
of a self-adjusting mechanism.
Because oriental medical science is a combination of art
and science, the proper manipulation of the needles is
extremely important, along with the proper diagnosis.
Usually after the first visit, even with acute pain, the patient
should feel some degree of improvement. For long term
improvement, the patient can learn qi gong, meditation,
and/or yoga. In the chronic stage, you have to work on an
emotional level, as the vital energy in the human body (qi)
is strongly affected by emotion.
TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 61

Feeling Hot and Sweaty? Stay Hydrated!
Here’s the Lowdown on When and What to Drink
by Zoltan P. Rona, M.D., M.Sc.
You’re going to the gym
to sweat buckets on a
near daily basis, or perhaps
you’re a frequent
jogger. What drink do
you consume to maintain
hydration? A fluorescent
coloured sports drink?
Electrolyte beverage? A
caffeinated soft drink?
Sugar water? Red Bull?
Glucose polymer? Fruit
juice? Or just plain
water? What about a few
glasses of beer after
exercise to rehydrate, or
at least relieve the many
aches and pains from
exercise?
On Electrolytes and
Peak Performance
An electrolyte is a mineral
that contains an electric charge found in
all bodily fluids. Examples are sodium,
potassium, calcium, chlorine, phosphorus,
and magnesium. They are essential to
nerve, cardiac, and other muscle function.
Deficiency can cause fatigue, spasm,
cramps and pain. Normally, electrolytes are
easily obtained from a well-balanced diet,
but are lost in high amounts in our sweat
while we exercise. (Sweat tastes salty
because of the sodium lost from the body.)
High intensity exercise in hot weather can
easily make you sweat away two to four
pounds of water (one to two quarts) in an
hour. This causes body temperature to rise
and performance to decline. If fluids are not
consumed at regular intervals, the result
may be heat stroke, organ damage, dehydration,
or possibly death.
To avoid health hazards and maintain
peak performance during exercise you
should drink before, during, and after a
workout. And if undertaking high intensity
Inadequate fluid replacement
may be at the bottom of recurrent
or chronic injuries as well
as poor athletic performance
results; a sub-optimal water
intake will affect your speed,
endurance, and strength
exercise like in tennis,
soccer, basketball, or
track and field, weigh
yourself before and after
to get a good idea of how
much water weight is
lost, then consume at
least two cups of water
for each pound lost. The
body is made up of about
60% water and needs to
be fully hydrated to perform
optimally. When the
outside temperature or
humidity is especially
high, the body requires
even more water because
it must work harder to
cool itself.
Inadequate fluid
replacement may be at the
bottom of recurrent or
chronic injuries as well as
poor athletic performance
results. A sub-optimal
water intake will affect
your speed, endurance,
and strength. It can also
cause dizziness, nausea, and muscle
cramps. Even a slight water deficit (about
one litre) will slow blood circulation and
reduce concentration.
And don’t depend on thirst to help you
decide when to drink fluids. Thirst is a poor
indicator of dehydration because you may
already be dehydrated before your thirst
mechanism kicks in. It’s best to start drinking
before you feel thirsty and keep drinking
even after your thirst is quenched if you are
going to exercise strenuously for hours.
The best beverage is pure spring water.
It’s the quickest fix for preventing or reversing
dehydration, and easiest for the body to
absorb. Long stretches of vigorous exercise
(over 1.5 hours) repeated day after day, as in
tournaments, will require replacement of
not only water but also carbohydrates and
the electrolytes sodium, magnesium, and
potassium. This is where the specially formulated
sports drinks come in.
How do you know if you’re drinking
62 VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017
www.vitalitymagazine.com

enough? Spot check your
urine often to see how much
fluid you really need. Urine
should be as light or palecoloured
as possible and
more frequent than when
sedentary, to be on the safe
side. The darker the urine, the
more dehydration is present.
The darker or more yellow
the urine, the more water you
need to replenish your fluid
reserves.
Water, Sports Drinks,
or Beer?
You may have seen the odd
hockey, baseball, soccer or
tennis player drinking beer
after a game. Is this really a
good way to replenish water
and electrolytes lost during
vigorous exercise? Beer’s
alcohol content has a dehydrating
effect that causes you
to lose even more valuable
fluids at a time when you
should be replacing them. If
you simply must drink beer,
first quench your thirst with
two or three large glasses of
water. Ideally, have something
to eat so that you aren’t
drinking on an empty stomach.
Enjoying a beer or two in
moderation in this fashion
will at least help you wind
down from the stress of a
heavy exercise.
Sports drinks should only
be used with vigorous exercise
that lasts over an hour and
a half. You do not need them
after jogging for half an hour
under pleasant weather conditions.
Here is a quote from a
recently published British
Medical Journal paper:
“Should people who exercise
seek to proactively replace
fluids lost, or can they rely on
thirst to guide them during
and after physical activity?
And when they rehydrate, do
they need all the salts, sugars,
and other ingredients dumped
www.vitalitymagazine.com
VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 63

into sports drinks, or is water
fine? The correct answers
are: best to rely on thirst, and
water is fine. All that stuff
that you’ve been hearing
about replacing electrolytes
and so on all these years?
Never mind! The evidence
doesn’t support it.”
The best thing I can say
about most of the popular
sports drinks on the market
is that they are a good scam.
If you have hypoglycemia or
diabetes, these drinks can
make blood sugar levels
dangerously worse. Some of
these drinks use aspartame
or Splenda for sweetening,
both of which are linked to
obesity and diabetes.
The number one ingredient
in most of the sports
drinks on the market is high
fructose corn syrup. In fact,
Gatorade contains 14 grams
of this simple disease-causing
sugar for every eight
ounces. Since a regular bottle
of Gatorade contains 32
ounces, you are actually getting
56 grams of sugar.
These ‘sports’ drinks also
contain brominated vegetable
oil for unspecified
reasons. Bromine displaces
iodine and can be toxic to
the thyroid gland. These formulas
also contain food
colourings and other potentially
harmful additives. The
Tristar Hydration
Supremacy is an ideal
sports drink formula that
contains potassium and
sodium, along with
electrolytes and trace
minerals often lost
during vigorous exercise
dyes have been linked to
hyperactivity and ADHD in
children. Although these
mainstream sports drinks do
replace lost electrolytes, as
discussed earlier, there are
far healthier ways to do that.
I often see people drinking
sports drinks while playing
video games or watching TV.
This could be dangerous. A
single bottle of Gatorade
contains 800 mg of sodium.
This represents one third of
the RDA for sodium. Excess
sodium intake has been associated
with high blood pressure
and stroke risk.
Ideal Sports and
Energy Drinks
If you need to use a hydration/energy
drink, what
should be in that mixture?
Those who need such a drink
are athletes who sweat profusely
enough to warrant
hydration beyond water.
Examples include distance
runners or those who play
hockey, football, soccer, basketball,
tennis and other vigorous
sports, as well as anyone
who sweats excessively
during and after exercise.
People who use saunas on a
regular basis usually will also
need to replace nutrients and
electrolytes lost during the
detoxification process. This
should help prevent muscle
pain, spasms, and the fatigue
that can occur after sauna
therapies.
The ideal drink should not
contain sugar in any form.
Stevia is permissible because
it has no impact on insulin
and subsequent blood sugar
or fat levels.
The mixture should definitely
contain potassium and
sodium. Other electrolytes
and minerals that could be
included are calcium, magnesium,
zinc, copper, selenium,
chromium, chloride and
phosphorus because these are
often lost during vigorous
exercise. Ginseng, hawthorn,
beet root, vitamins B3, B6,
B12 and C could also be in
the mixture for maintaining
Guidelines for Hydration
During Vigorous Exercise
The American College of
Sports Medicine has created
the following guidelines for
hydration during vigorous
exercise at athletic competitions:
l Drink plenty of water (1
to 2 cups) at least 15 minutes
before an event, even if you
are not thirsty. Never restrict
fluids during exercise.
l During the event, drink
8 to 12 ounces of water
every 15 to 20 minutes,
regardless of thirst. Cold
drinks are best because they
are absorbed most rapidly.
l If your event, usually
categorized by exercise
physiologists as “vigorous
exercise”, lasts under 1.5
hours, the only fluid replacement
beverage likely needed
is water. Add a squeeze of
lemon or lime or a splash of
juice for variety.
l Beyond 1.5 hours, you
can benefit from one of the
many sport drinks on the
market. The drink should
not exceed 8% carbohydrate
by weight because more than
that will slow absorption and
may cause stomach cramps
or nausea. To play it safe,
dilute the sports drink by an
equal amount of water.
l If you are an elite athlete
and feel the need to replace
both water and electrolytes,
make your own sports drink
by diluting any natural fruit
juice beverage with an equal
amount of water. Orange
juice, grapefruit juice, and
www.vitalitymagazine.com
apple cider are excellent
choices. Fruit juices, especially
freshly squeezed, as
effective as just about any
commercial sports drink.
l Don’t drink anything
with caffeine (coffee, tea,
chocolate, cola drinks, ‘energy
drinks’) or alcohol, all of
which have a dehydrating
effect.
l Carbonated drinks of
any kind should be avoided
since these tend to make you
feel full, making it difficult
to drink enough.
l Drink 2 cups of water
for every pound lost during
the match. After exercise,
choose carbohydrate-rich
fluids such as juices that
replace both water losses
and muscle glycogen (stored
carbohydrate) to enhance
recovery.
So, keep moving and live
longer but don’t forget to
replace nutrients and electrolytes
if you’re going to do
lots of exercise and sports.
Science-Based Reasons to Drop the Idea that
Removing Things Makes Safe Health–Enhancing Water.
The actual culprits in those physical/chemical things we call
“toxins”, are the biologically unfriendly energies they carry.
Water has “memory”– 440,000 slots in each water molecule,
that store energy imprints of every thing the water contacts.
Removing the physical/chemical associated with toxins
fails to save the body from the toxic energies stored in
water’s memory. Electrically powered water systems
add imprints of toxic EMFs into water’s memory.
The storage of toxic energies diminishes the natural lifeaiding
energies and properties of the water molecule, thereby
making it less absorbable and less efficient. Removing
the physical/chemical associated with toxins fails to
revive the water’s innate life-supporting energies and
properties.
Humans, animals, plants… all life thrives with water
molecules in their true original and energized state;
Nature-made water that is free of toxic energy imprints,
and has specific energy patterns and properties.
This specialized water is called “Structured Water”. It
appears in healthy cells and “Healing Waters” (eg., Hunza).
Every animal is afraid of
pain and will do anything
to avoid it. It’s natural.
But this avoidance creates a
whole host of problems. In
my former article on anger
(Vitality, Dec.05/Jan.06) I
showed how anger, if not
experienced in a functional
way, can also create a host of
problems in one’s health and
relationships. This article
will explore how counselling
can deal with guilt,
which is a powerful emotion
that can stifle joy and wellbeing.
Guilt is there for a reason.
It acts as a moral guide, signalling
when some rule or
law has been transgressed. It
tells us when we have done
something wrong; it should
guide our choices not abuse
us.
A counsellor cannot isolate
and focus on just one
blocked emotion because it
can often be one or a combination
of several that are
inhibited, which lead to the
problem.
We tend to be unaware
of the many ways we
unconsciously suppress
emotions. We are not born
with suppressed emotions.
Such suppression or
avoidance is a learned
response taught by our
caregivers and the
world around us
For example, for many
people anxiety is paired
with joy. The experience of
joy can be accompanied by
the anxiety that it won’t or
can’t last, or that the joy is
undeserved. One can also
experience guilt about feeling
anger at someone we
care about. The actual emotion
of anger feels good, but
this kind can be painful
because we suppress these
feelings and instead experience
self-criticism and
guilt.
In When the Body Says
No, author Gabor Mate
writes, “A therapist once
said to me: ‘If you face the
choice between feeling
guilt and resentment,
choose the guilt every time.’
If a refusal saddles you with
guilt while consent leaves
resentment in its wake, opt
for the guilt. Resentment is
soul suicide.”
However, I have seen
plenty of cases where guilt
is just as crippling. Take the
example of a mother who
suffers from a chronic illness
and uses her illness in
a manipulative way to get
the attention she craves
from her daughter. The
daughter may feel tremendous
guilt about getting on
with her life and leaving her
mother behind. Can she
imagine herself in five years down the road, happy and successful,
while her mother is still ill and depressed? Can the
daughter feel compassion and sadness about her mother’s
situation and still get on with her life, or is she more likely
to feel crippling shame and guilt?
Only a very mature person could have a frank discussion
about all this without the deprecating self-talk that says she
shouldn’t feel the way she does. On the other hand, how
does the mother feel? Is she also tortured with guilt about
needing her daughter’s attention so badly? What in her history
makes her so needy?
In some cases, people use disease as a punishment by
accusing themselves of being deserving of their illness. Or
there could be guilt about being sick and a burden to others.
The counsellor is constantly watching for signals that
don’t compute. For example, if the patient smiles when he
talks about his sick mother – the counsellor will challenge
the smile. Or a patient may talk in a monotonous, dead tone
while recounting a situation she feels guilt about. The counsellor
will challenge that lack of emotion. It’s all about challenging
the defenses against painful feelings, and bringing
awareness to the surface.
I had a patient who was tortured by so much guilt and
self-loathing that he lived like a hermit. He had his own
inner judge and jury, which condemned him for something
that had happened in his childhood, and over which he had
no control. This guilt carried over into his adult life and
made it impossible for him to
stand up for himself because
he always judged himself in
the wrong – whatever the situation.
His girlfriend had just
left him due to his inability to
connect emotionally, and he
ended up in my office knowing
that something was wrong,
but was not sure how to fix it.
He did not consider himself
deserving of happiness and
believed that any show of
emotion on his part meant he
was emotionally unstable. He
lived a life of doom and dread,
with tight control over his
thoughts. His case was difficult
because he truly believed
that he was bad, unworthy, and
deserved to be punished.
So we undertook an examination
of each of his beliefs:
whether each belief was truth
or fantasy; or whether it was a
valid belief for that person’s
life, or worthless when exam-
ined. Was this or that belief
truth or fiction? What evidence
could he find that
would back up this belief?
At first he could only
accept on an intellectual level
that his guilt was self-inflicted.
We had to dig deeper to
If we have been brought
up imprinted with the
wrong information from
our caregivers or society,
we can change it and take
control of our lives again
get to the part of him that really believed he was bad. We
had to work slowly to help him distance himself from his
guilt and to see it for what it was worth.
Gradually, he stopped sitting hunched in his chair,
stopped looking like a condemned, crippled man, stopped
the talk in his head that was always self-condemning. A
crack appeared in his gloomy outlook on life, and slowly he
was able to embrace the good that was around him and
know without doubt that he deserved it.
We tend to be unaware of the ways we unconsciously suppress
emotions. We are not born with suppressed emotions.
Such suppression or avoidance is a learned response taught
by our caregivers and the world around us. What we counsellors
do is try to help the patient acknowledge the real
feelings she has and not what should be and, most importantly,
to accept them – however unpleasant.
We are born perfect, but we are not born with a set of
instructions. If we have been brought up imprinted with the
wrong information from our caregivers or society, we can
change it and take control of our life again. As Shakespeare
wrote: “This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must
follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to
any man.”
JUNE
SUN SIGN PREDICTIONS
★★★ By Julie Simmons ★★★
GEMINI: May 21 - June 20
Busy is good; mindless is not. Madly off in all
directions sounds better than it feels. Does your
mad multitasking arise from your mind or
body? Jugglers all know where their centre of gravity lives;
you should too. From the 1st – 4th, nothing is what it
seems, be it good, bad or indifferent. Be a witness, not a
wisp in the wind. Your brilliant mind is aflutter with good
ideas and lots to say from the 6th – 13th. Pay some mind to
who is listening; there will be consequences from the 15th
– 20th either way. A new financial plan or reality occurs to
you from the 24th – 26th. It may take some effort to hammer
out the details, and beware the shape-shifting con
artists who would take your self-esteem while offering
fool’s gold, only to vanish with the sun by the 30th.
CANCER: June 21 - July 20
Prepare yourself for action. There is a lot to get
ready until the 5th, at which time the gates
open and you are ready for the race. Or not.
Maybe you’ve had enough of the race and this opening is to
run free for a change; to put yourself first. This is a worthy
expectation and you could pull it off until the 23rd. Strong,
clever insights occur to you from the 6th – 15th and conversation
with friends helps you sort through them. Only
use what they say if it is applicable to your life, and stay
grounded from the 12th – 18th. Gather people who support
you in loving, practical ways on the 24th, and push through
to wisdom from higher sources that is offered with love and
no agenda. You can tell the difference.
LEO: July 22 - Aug. 22
It is human to think we know more than we
often do – this comes with the ability to think
at all. To be humble in the face of confusion or
ignorance takes a big heart and wise attitude. Be big-hearted
from the 1st – 3rd, and on the 4th you can practice
humility. Perception and understanding improve on the 6th
when you talk to others about your big questions. This is a
creative process. A brilliant idea has merit from the 13th –
20th, but it’s riddled with some delusion as well. Take time
to sift through this. Many things originate in places even
you aren’t aware of. By the time they are known to you,
they have already taken root. Meditate on this from the 24th
– 26th, then ask your guides for help in cultivating your
growth from the 27th – 30th. They come when they are
called.
70 VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 www.vitalitymagazine.com

VIRGO: Aug. 23 - Sept. 21
Things that have thwarted you seem to be falling
into place, depending on your ability to accept
the process of transformation from the 1st – 5th.
You can’t stop or control it, so you might as well accept it.
The strength of your wisdom and intelligence is more easily
accessed from the 6th – 23rd. Shine your light without forcing
people to respond, especially the ones who just love you
but don’t necessarily seem to understand you. They, in their
own way, are your teachers in learning to love without being
critical – simply, from the heart. New projects are cooking
from the 24th. Set some empowered creative intentions.
Good friends are both helpful and confusing, both inspiring
and intimidating from the 27th – 30th. Love them all but
keep your centre amid the contradictory energies.
LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 22
Take on both necessary and creative communications
from the 1st – 3rd – you have a brilliant
star inspiring your way. Overwhelm seeps in on
the 4th, but scintillating ideas and conversation continue
through the 15th. It’s not just fizz. You’re on to something
worth talking about from the 18th – 20th. Supporters challenge
you to do more and better. Be inspired, not intimidated
– it’s helpful in honing excellence. The 21st presents powerful
insight regarding your life purpose. Let it cook until the
24th, at which time you might consider how it could change
your life and those whose lives you share. Be practical about
how to fulfil this purpose. Ambition is only bad when it’s
ruthless and blind. Revise your long-term goals from the
26th – 30th – not because they aren’t good, just because you
need to connect the ideal to the real.
SCORPIO: Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
Commitment to excellence in service to others is
top of the list from the 1st – 6th. The intensity of
your perceptions is sometimes a gift, sometimes
not – but it is often remarkable. A brief moment of total misperception
occurs on the 4th; after the 6th, clarity returns.
You can share your thoughts – or not – but be discriminating
on this from the 8th – 15th. Focus on how you feel about others,
not on how they might perceive you. Pull in expectations
and agendas from the 18th – 23rd. Where is the value in relation
to the effort you make? Whom do you trust to help you?
Powerful support on the 24th inspires you to rise again.
There is genuine hope and possibility on the 25th, no need to
overdo it. Communications – subtle and obvious, true and
false, genuine and fabricated – rule the day from the 27th –
30th. Speak your truth when expressing your thoughts. It’s
always subjective.
www.vitalitymagazine.com
SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20
Fire needs something to burn. Your difficulties
can arise from acting as though your fire doesn’t
need wood. Over the last year or two, you have
VITALITY MAGAZINE – JUNE 2017 71

een faced with this situation more than once. Strengthen the
fuel that feeds your fire from the 1st – 3rd. Look out for
smoke and possibly mirrors on the 4th. Engage with those
who really “get” you from the 8th – 18th, dealing with matters
of home and family only if necessary. Love is what we
all want; giving it freely gets you more than waiting to see
who loves you unconditionally. Slow down actions so you
can feel feelings from June 21st – 24th. Undercurrents need
to be addressed on the 25th and 30th. Neither avoidance nor
confrontation will work – look for a third alternative.
CAPRICORN : Dec. 21 - Jan. 19
Anticipating the future is always so much better
or worse than catching up to it. But we do need
to plan ahead. The trick is to stay present while
planning. You do this with mastery from the 1st – 4th.
Then, from the 8th – 16th, something pulls you off your
seat until you remember to simply breathe in and out.
Rigidity is not the same as presence. Then begins a short
period of preparation from the 17th – 24th. Clean up, clean
out, organize. You will know when you are called back into
action. Lots of activity and challenge from the 24th – 30th.
Thinking or moving from your centre allows for mastery.
You are as unmovable as a mountain.
AQUARIUS: Jan. 20 - Feb. 17
Friends are full of good ideas and useful truths
from the 1st – 3rd: Listen well. Even so, there
is confusion sprouting like unwelcome weeds
from the 4th – 15th. Time to sort the truly wise and useful
from the too-good-to-be-true. Conversations with creative
people are important. But stay grounded. Listen to the call
of your authentic values from the 18th – 24th. Practice living
those values from the 24th – 30th. This is not about radical
change; it is more about the small but powerful
lifestyle choices we make all the time, such as using plastic
or not. These are choices you make not just for the planet
but for you, the individual cell in the vast network of
cells that make a universe.
PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19
The heavy weight of responsibility shifts to a
real understanding and appreciation of your
capabilities from the 1st – 10th. Watch out on
the 4th for confusing projections. Witty, clever people are
seductive as well as alluring from the 12th – 18th. The time
is good to take what you need and leave the rest. This feeds
your self-confidence, something Pisces always needs more
of. Retreat as best you can and imagine or plan your creative
projects from the 19th – 23rd. From June 24th – 30th,
you are all about creative power. Transform your world
through beauty and self-expression. When your creativity
is linked to your feelings, it’s powerful. Do not fear the negative
or cling to positive feelings – all of it is simply fuel to
drive the engine of creative self-expression.
ARIES: March 20 - April 19
The things you want most seem quite possible
to have from the 1st – 3rd – but you are moving
so fast it’s hard to see how or even why you
could hold on to anything but wisdom itself at the moment.
What you learn has way more value then what you get.
Hold this thought at least through the 11th. A worthy opponent
challenges your assumptions about who you are,
thereby sharpening your awareness of yourself from the
12th – 18th. Asking the right questions is better than having
the answers. Be quiet and let change happen from June
20th – 24th. Mysterious energies that feed us from below,
the way earth nourishes plants, are moving in your life.
Disruptions from the 24th – 29th are about change, not
loss. There may be some intense judgments flying. Hold
your ground without power tripping. And remember that
it’s generally better to be kind than right.
TAURUS: April 20 - May 20
Holding tightly to everything that you think/feel
belongs to you causes a kind of constipation of
the soul. Letting it all go, as if it doesn’t matter,
creates a kind of La La Land, which isn’t preferable, either.
At the meeting point of this rocky, hard place is a sweet
spot, which you find from the 1st – 3rd and cultivate over
the next two weeks. Longing overtakes you on the 4th, but
it’s like a wave out in the ocean: gone before it breaks. Pay
it no mind; rather, trust the balance between holding on and
letting go. Clever ways to make money show up from the
13th – 20th. Although things that are too good to be true
generally are, you might be onto something. Celebrate the
rotation from spring to summer from June 20th – 23rd; do
something simple and pleasing. Summer activities call you
to action from the 24th – 30th. Try not to make too much
of work versus play. It’s all life.
JUNE Horoscope Predictions by Robin Armstrong
TAURUS – This will be a comfortable month for most
Taureans. It will be a time of personal indulgence and enjoyment.
You will be able to use charm to get what you want.
GEMINI – Quick wit and easy communications will prevail
this month. The main challenge will be to avoid increasing
commitments and time demands. In big issues you will be
delayed, but in small matters you will succeed.
LIBRA – Communications will be highlighted for Libras this
month. Care will be needed to avoid hurting the feelings of
others. Share your ideas, but do not assume familiarity.
SAGITTARIUS – Sagittarians will enjoy a lot of social activity
this month but you will tend to go in too many directions.
It will be difficult for you to finish things. The main problem
will be foot-in-mouth disease. You will be inclined to say the
wrong thing at the wrong time.
STUDY HIGHLIGHTS
HEALTH OPPORTUNITIES
FOR BRAMPTON
A week after the grand opening
of the Peel Memorial
Centre for Integrated Health
and Wellness, the City of
Brampton presented a core
strategy to create a Health
and Life Sciences cluster at
this world-class facility.
The strategy recommends
building this cluster with a
focus on preventive care,
which complements the service
focus at Peel Memorial,
‘A Stroll in the Park’ celebrates their 27th anniversary this month
takes advantage of growing
trends, and would differentiate
Brampton from health
sectors across the GTA. This
type of cluster would attract
businesses involved with big
data, health apps, population-based
research, and personalized
medicine.
“Brampton is doing gamechanging
things in the health
and life sciences sector,” said
Mayor Linda Jeffrey. “With a
new facility coming, our central
position in the Innovation
Super Corridor, combined
with the forward-looking
approaches outlined in this
study, we have a great opportunity
to set a new course for
Brampton.”
“We’re excited about the
health and life sciences
opportunities this study
highlights,” said Bob
Darling, the City’s Economic
Development and Culture
Director. “With many healthrelated
businesses already
operating in the city and
partnerships we’re facilitating,
we are well positioned to
help build this cluster and
enhance the quality of life in
Brampton.” More info. at:
