ALBANY Sister Mary Rose Noonan (2nd from right), communications director for the Albany Province, was honored recently by the Steffens Scleroderma Research Foundation. Over the years, Sister Mary Rose (Mamie), a person with scleroderma, has suffered the losses of her fingers, toes and left leg. Her awards citation reads: “We are grateful for your consistent willingness to support scleroderma awareness. You have been a key voice in helping further the recognition, awareness and education of scleroderma. Your well-spoken presence, enthusiasm and knowledge, imparted on TV and in videos, and your continued generosity of time to assist in fostering scleroderma awareness, is commendable.” ALBANY La Hermana Mary Rose Noonan (segunda a la derecha), es la Directora de Comunicaciones por la Provincia de Albany; recientemente ha sido reconocida por “Steffens Scleroderma Research Foundation.” La Hermana Mary Rose, (Mamie) diagnosticada con escleroderma y ha sufrido la pérdida de sus dedos y de los dedos del pie derecho. Tu presencia habla elocuentemente de tu entusiasmo y conocimiento, el cual has impartido en la TV, videos, y en la continua generosidad de tu tiempo promoviendo y despertando la conciencia sobre escleroderma; tu actitud es admirable.” LOS ANGELES While visiting family in Tucson, Arizona, Sisters Colleen and Kathleen Harris, asked their sister-in-law, Charlotte Harris, to sew a fidget lap blanket for Sister Helen Oswald. These special blankets, designed for fidgeting, can evoke fond memories, maintain motor skills and encourage activities of daily living for people with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, stroke, brain trauma and other disorders. Charlotte incorporated pieces of lace, zippers, buttons and yarn of different textures to create a Sisters of St. Joseph-themed blanket. 6 CARONDELET LOS ÁNGELES Mientras visitaban a su familia en Tucson, Arizona, las Hermanas Colleen y Kathleen Harris, le pidieron a su cuñada Charlotte Harris, que por favor hiciera un “manta interactiva” para la Hermana Helen Oswaldo. Estas mantas están diseñadas para evocar recuerdos, mantener la habilidad motora y motivar las actividades diarias. Son una gran ayuda terapéutica para las personas que sufren síntomas causados por el Alzheimer, demencia, autismo, ataques y traumas cerebrales y otros desordenes neurológicos. What is the “Charism” of the Sisters of St. Joseph? BY KITTY HANLEY, CSJ Charism really isn’t our word at all; it belongs to the Holy Spirit, the giver of all gifts. Our early documents describe us as “stimulated by the Holy Spirit and responsive to God’s inspirations …” and so we open our hearts and lives to that gift. Why? So that we can give it away joyfully, freely, extravagantly! It is not ours to keep, only to give away. Theologians speak of charism as a spirit or characteristic that gives a community its distinctiveness. Just as we have countless names for God, never settling on one, our charism goes by many names: unifying love, oneness, unity and reconciliation, active inclusive love. We find inspiration in Jesus’ words at his most precious community gathering, the Last Supper. He prayed, “That all may be one, as you and I, Father, are one.” When we speak of “the dear neighbor, from whom we do not separate ourselves,” we are naming charism in another way. Religious life has changed through the years but the charism remains. It flourishes on every continent and in every ministry situation. We recognize it in one another and in the dear neighbor, and we discover a special energy when we gather together with other Sisters and Associates of St. Joseph around the world or meet each other in chance encounters. We give thanks for this charism that sustains and challenges us, and we ask for the grace to continue giving it away. ¿QUÉ ES EL “CARISMA” DE LAS HERMANAS DE SAN JOSÉ? Carisma no es una palabra nuestra; pertenece al Espíritu Santo, fuente de todos los dones. Nuestros documentos nos describen cómo mujeres “estimuladas por el Espíritu Santo y receptivas a sus inspiraciones.” Así, abrimos nuestros corazones y nuestras vidas a esta gracia. ¿Para qué? Para que podamos compartir nuestro carisma libremente, generosamente, gozosamente. No es algo que podemos conservar, lo tenemos solamente para dar. Los teólogos hablan del carisma como un espíritu o característica que da una comunidad su distinción. Como tenemos muchos nombres para Dios, nuestro carisma tiene muchos nombres: el amor unificador, la unidad, la unión y reconciliación, y el amor inclusivo y activo. Nos inspiramos en las palabras de Jesús en la Última Cena, su reunión más profunda con sus discípulos. Él rezó “Qué todos sean uno, como tú y yo, Padre somos uno.” Cuando hablamos del “querido prójimo” de quien no nos separamos, también estamos hablando de nuestro carisma. La vida consagrada ha cambiado mucho en el transcurso de los años, pero el carisma permanece. El carisma florece en cada continente, en cada situación de ministerio. Reconocemos el carisma una en la otra y en el Sister Kitty Hanley querido prójimo y descubrimos una energía especial cuando nos reunimos con otras Hermanas y los Asociados de San José en diferentes partes del mundo y aún cuando nos encontramos por casualidad. Damos gracias por el carisma que nos sostiene y nos desafía.
