TUSA: Introduction 2
In 1937 Picasso painted GUER-
NICA which subsequently became
the most
celebrated anti-war image of the
twentieth century. This painting
was his response to the bombing
of the Basque town of Guernica
by the Nazis for Franco.
The huge painting measured 3.5
metres by 7.77 meters and travelled
the world before returning
to Spain.
In June 2008 Dominic Ryan after
spending ten years in conflict
zones decided to recreate another
image to reflect the horrors
of the twenty first century and
act as a message to what we
cannot allow to occur again. The
artist, who had founded a small
NGO called the Peace Project in
1994 where art installations with
humanitarian messages were
erected has been moved to create
another statement about injustice,
suffering and war.
Between June and October 2008
he worked with three assistants
to paint thie image before you.
This was a direct response to
Dominics recent experiences
in the Middle East and his desire
to bring a large installation
to the Nuclear reactror plant in
Iran. Hence the name, Tehran,
USA. This became abbreviated to
TUSA.
Both the painting’s theme and
size are the same as Picassso’s
GUERNICA.
The artist aims to give voice to
victims of war from around the
world. He has visited Sarajevo
in 1995, Gaza in 1997, Kosovo
in 1999, Cyprus in 2000, and the
West Bank in 2001. Dominic
Ryan has received the Liberte
Prize for Human Rights in the
European Union and was shortlisted
for nomination the Nobel
Peace Prize in 2007.
The Universal Declaration of
Peace was written by Dominic
Ryan with politicians and other
human rights leaders in 2007.
Some of the articles are suggestions,
others are international
law. All are open to discussion.
