TUSA: About the Declaration - Violence and war cannot solve the problems of humanity. We call for an end to violence and killing among all races, religions and countries - A Universal Declaration for Peace - Peace can only come through justice, equality and the respect for all human life - Conflict resolution can also be found through peaceful dialogue and the implementation of international laws - Punishment of innocent people including collective punishment cannot be used as a defence by individuals or groups and will only intensify suffering and conflict - In every war there are innocent victims both dead and scarred whose lives cannot be regained - The killing of an innocent person cannot be justified as an act sanctified by god and country - Civilians are never to be attacked - There cannot be lawful deportation of groups or individuals; deprivation of food or water; destruction of property; wilful killing; or the causing of physical and mental suffering by armed forces - There cannot be the committing of rape, humiliation of women, psychological or physical torture and exploitation of any individual or group - There can be no siege of innocent civilians; denial of foodstuffs; or transference of populations without consent - There can be no attacks, aerial bombardments on military targets, which are adjacent to civilian populations - There can be no sexual slavery; enforced prostitution; trafficking of individuals for financial gain - No person is to be subject to character assassination or psychological humiliation - No person is to be persecuted, humiliated or abused physically or mentally 82 TUSAthe_painting.indd 82 6/7/09 7:54:50 PM
- Each person has the right to defend themselves from persecution, humiliation, abuse, but be mindful of the fact that god’s first law is that we do not kill each other - Each of us has the right to be free from aggression and acts of hostility towards themselves and their families and to live in security without fear of forcible removal of themselves or destruction of their homes - Each of us has the right to live free from violence, terror, murder, persecution, siege, hostage taking, rape, involuntary detainment, sexual slavery, and collective punishment - Each of is has the right to freedom, and sovereign states have the right to self-determination and non-interference from others provided they themselves seek to not interfere - The psychological terror, abuse, scarring and torture towards civilians as innocent populations as a result of acts of war by both sides, irrespective of the weight of injustice perceived and real by either side, must be acknowledged as illegitimate - Each individual and group must be free of psychological abuse, from humiliation, degradation and free from political and military assassinations - The premeditated use of hostages as human shields and the kidnapping of civilians are crimes against humanity im-material of race, religion or country - A country, state or nation is legally allowed to unilaterally defend it and right a wrong provided the response is proportional to the injury suffered - No country, state, president, representative of any world religion or representative of any armed force or country in any conflict is justified in using nuclear weapons under any circumstances in defence or retaliation - No country, state, president, representative of any world religion or representative of any armed force or country in any conflict is justified in using biological weapons under any circumstances in defence or retaliation - No country, state, president, representative of any world religion or representative of any armed force or country in any conflict is justified in using chemical weapons under any circumstances in defence or retaliation - In the event of inner-city warfare, defending forces must avoid situating military targets near populated areas, and attacking forces must provide enough warnings and exit routes to the civilian population - Armed attacks designed to undermine civilian morale are illegal - Rape designed as a means of intimidation and of undermining morale towards the opposing side is illegal - A country, military government or usurping power which takes over a country whether justified or not must immedi-ately provide security and humanitarian services for the civilians under their control - Targets that are adjacent to areas necessary to the survival of the civilian population must not be attacked - Cluster bombs cannot be used in populated areas - All people have the right to live in safety with dignity and security free from military occupation - Violence and war will only cause greater pain and suffering and reduce future chances for peaceful resolution of conflicts - Only through the awareness of human suffering and compassion for others regardless of nationality, race, gender or religious preference will we bring peace to the earth 83 TUSAthe_painting.indd 83 6/7/09 7:54:51 PM
